here is part three,
I'm sorry if I spammed anyones email because I had to repost this chapter about three times before it would work :(
JJ remembered Spencer telling her about a conversation he had with his mother. It had started when he was a child and Diana made the decision to uproot the family. The woman, who had already begun to show signs of her illness, chose to move houses because she knew Reid was in danger. Years later it was reveled she was right, as a man had killed a young boy Spencer's age. JJ still remembered what his mother had said.
When Spencer asked her how she knew he had been in danger Diana had stated 'because humans were animals and they felt things.' She said a mother knows.
At the time JJ was pregnant, and being so close to her due date she thought she had understood what Diana had meant. The feeling of a new life growing inside of her, the connection she felt when Henry kicked, all her senses were heightened and she truly felt like a mother lion protecting her cub.
It wasn't until Henry was born that she realized she was wrong. Holding him in her arms she felt an overwhelming crash of emotions. Looking down at him in that moment, bundled up and staring innocently at the world around him, JJ felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Struck by pure love, love she had never felt for anyone, not her parents or her sister or Will, it was the unmistakable love that a parent could only feel for their child. That was the moment she thought she understood what Diana had meant, because to protect your child a mother would do anything, listen to every instinct, and act however irrational to keep them safe.
Now, four years later, JJ realized she was wrong again.
Sitting on the park bench JJ refused to let her eyes leave Henry for even a second. Something was wrong. This was the feeling Diana had been talking about when Gary Michaels set his eyes on spencer. JJ did not know what it was but every fiber in her body was screaming at her to take Henry away, take him home where it was safe.
It was the second week of winter camp. This was Henry's first year going but it had been an annual day camp that the community center held every year. Samantha Barton who ran the program was in her late fifties and adored children. She provided winter sports and games, always was eager to play with the children. Most parents stayed for the few hours that the camp went on, watched from the sidelines as their children played hockey on the homemade rink, hands either frozen to their cell phones or tucked into there pockets, and then when the game was over they would take them home after lunch. With JJ work schedule at the BAU Kate, Henry's baby sitter was usually the one to bring him along with the other children in her care.
Today was one of the rare days that JJ had the afternoon off and had decided to pick him up. When she arrived Henry had waved to her, his blonde hair that matched her own, fell out of his helmet as he smiled up at her. The game was almost over so JJ took a seat on the bench and watched as Henry shakily moved over the ice using his stick for balance, red cheeks huffing and puffing.
Everything was fine, joyful, there was no reason for this sudden feeling of dread that over took her. Looking around JJ wasn't sure what she expected to see but her eyes landed on one child clinging to her mother's side. The girl was Miranda Conlin and she could not have been older than eight years old, wearing a rich red coat and clutching her mother's side. When the child's brown eyes suddenly snapped to meet JJ's from across the field something inside her snapped.
Without conscious thought JJ rose from the bench and waved for Henry, unlaced his skates and leading him away by the hand. It made no sense, nothing was wrong, no one said or did anything. But humans were just animals, and a mother will instinctively protect her child.
