AN: Here it is! This is the last chapter for this story. This past year and a half has been such a whirlwind and I would like to thank everyone who has read, commented, and/or supported this story. I'm sorry to see Zoey and Jess go.
I own nothing, except the characters I made up in my own head. Enjoy!
[[A YEAR AND A HALF LATER]]
Zoey stepped off of the stage and into the wings after curtain call for "Chicago" with tears in her eyes Tonight was her last night as Velma Kelly. It was bittersweet and she would miss everyone, but she had been auditioning and was ready for a change. She spotted Jess almost instantly. A smile spread across her face to see him with a bouquet, a warm smile and open arms. She embraced him with happy tears. He placed a kiss on her heavily made up forehead.
In all of the craziness, she leaned in and gave him a kiss that was salty with tears. "I can't believe it's over. I'm not going to be Velma anymore." She said in disbelief. The brunette felt Jess' arms tighten around her.
"It's all going to be fine. This was your decision.." He reminded her.
"I know, it's just a lot to take in right now. I need to get out of my costume and say goodbye and there's some ritual that needs to happen." She explained, trying to sound calm and failing.
Jess smiled encouragingly and planted a sweet kiss on her lips. "I'll meet you back at our place then?"
Zoey looked at Jess lovingly. "Yeah, I'll call if it gets too late. I'll see you at home, my handsome and successful writer boyfriend." She smiled and kissed him quickly before turning on her heel and heading to her dressing room.
Jess shook his head with a grin on his face. His second book had been getting great feedback and was rising on the charts. He had never expected that to happen at all, especially so soon. This year and a half has been a whirlwind. Like every couple, they had had their ups and downs. There was no doubt in his mind that it was all worth it though.
He left the theater caught a cab. Their new place wasn't quite as nice as the one in philly, but it was what they needed and it was in their price range. He unlocked and opened the door, walking into the studio apartment. Isabelle was hanging all kinds of white Christmas lights. "Are you sure that she'll like this?" He asked, locking the door behind him. "It's not too much, right?"
Isabelle looked back with a smirk. "Of course she'll like this. This looks very romantic. Don't doubt yourself now. If you start that then you'll never have the balls to ask the question." She chuckles, continuing to hang lights.
"I'm not doubting this. This is happening. Nothing is changing my mind." Jess stated, taking his jacket off.
"Good. And she still has no idea, right?" Isabelle asked without looking.
"Absolutely none." Jess confirmed. He started to help the woman with some details.
"Fantastic. That'll make this all the better. Now, when's she going to be home?"
Jess checked his watch. "I've been gone 45 minutes. So, we probably have another hour?" He guessed.
Everything looked great, he just hoped that Zoey agreed. "We're ahead of schedule then." Isabelle sounded impressed. "You have the ring, right?"
Jess checked, feeling the box in his inside jacket pocket. "Got it."
"Awesome. I think that my job is done. Just let me know when and where to hide." Isabelle smiled up at Jess. "She's going to be blown away that you would do this for her." She pauses for a moment to think. "I'm rooting for you guys. I think you'll make it. You're good for her, and vice versa." Her smile was warm as she looked up at Jess from the couch.
Jess listened to the woman. "Thanks Belle. I couldn't have pulled this off without you." He told her honestly. His looked down slightly and smiled at the compliment. "I think so too." He affirmed.
[[TIME SKIP]]
As Zoey stepped up to the door of their apartment, she thought that she heard light music playing. She put her key in the door and unlocked all of the locks. 'Why did he lock all of these?' She wondered. The brunette was relieved when the last lock clicked out of place and she opened the door. Her eyes widened instantly.
There he was standing in their apartment surrounded by beautiful lights and flowers. Zoey was stunned speechless, blinking a couple of times to make sure that this was real. Jess looked even more handsome than he normally did. His stubbly smile almost made her melt as she stepped in and closed the door. It took some getting used to seeing the place like this. 'When did he have the time to do this?' She thought.
"Welcome home, beautiful." Jess said in a calm and cool tone.
"Hello handsome." Zoey said with a smile. She was still trying to take everything in. "You've been busy." She observed, stepping closer to her boyfriend.
His smile grew a little bit as he nodded. She looked beautiful. He easily closed the gap between them, kissing her soft lips and wrapping his arms around her waist. "I love you." He whispered.
"I love you too." She smiled into his lips.
Jess' hands left Zoey's waist and grasped her own, intertwining their fingers. "I have no idea how I got so lucky that you showed up on my doorstep looking for a place to stay. I never imagined that this would be where we were when I first met you. My life when it came to relationships was ..difficult. I never thought that I would ever be at this place where I would meet someone and be as happy as I am with you. Somehow, you found me and changed my life completely. Now, I can't imagine my life without you." He paused for a moment, looking into Zoey's eyes.
"You are the person that I want to make fun of movies with, read in bed until we both get fall asleep, be spontaneous with, and fall in love all over again each day with. Zoey Anderson, you're the woman that I want to spend my life with."
It was then that he let go of one of Zoey's hands and reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out the box. Unrealizing, Zoey let go of Jess' other hand as her hands flew up to her mouth in joy-filled shock. She watched as he got down on one knee, still not believing that this was really happening.
"Zoey Elaina Anderson, Will you marry me?" He asked, opening the box to reveal a beautiful diamond ring. His whole facial expression was warm, genuine and full of love. He looked up at her with anticipation.
Zoey's mind was rushing around at a hundred miles a minute. It was almost like a fairytale. They were happy and in love. Tears started to fill her eyes, her hands slowly falling from her mouth. She took a calming breath, trying to banish the tears without much luck. When she looked at him, the corners of her mouth pulled up as she whispered, "Yes."
"Yes. I will marry you, Jess Mariano."
I hope that you enjoyed the epilogue. Please feel free to tell me what you guys think. I love hearing from you all. If there's interest, I might write a sequel. Let me know. I hope that you all are having a wonderful day/night/afternoon! -JenInWonderland
