Convincing Will and Henry to go on a camping trip was easier than she thought, as he loved to spend time with their son. With them out of town JJ did not need to worry about anything happening to him.
Garth had told her to stay out of it, but that was one thing that JJ was not able to do. She had done her research, now she just had to convince Garth that she would not be in the way.
The old motel was covered in a blanket of snow, faded brown siding supported small icicles. It would have been a picture perfect image if the footprints had not mix the snow and dirt together into an ugly slush across the parking lot.
JJ had initially tried knocking on the front door but got no response. Instead she was forced to pick the lock, a trick agent Greenaway taught her. The door opened with a low creak allowing JJ to enter the surprisingly clean motel room.
The Winchesters method of hunting had been chaotic with pictures pinned to the walls, clothes thrown across the room, and fast food containers on the table.
Garth's room was organized. There were no half empty containers piled in the garbage or unmade beds. Flies were placed neatly on the end tables forming right angles with the edge with a pen placed inches away.
JJ didn't have time to give the room much thought before the room door opened again, letting in the cold winter wind.
Turning around JJ was almost surprised to see Garth, who on instinct had pulled the gun from his side, standing in the threshold.
"I thought changlings were killed by fire, would a gun do any damage?" JJ asked with a small smirk taking some satisfaction in the hunter's shocked expression.
.
"What are you doing here?" Garth asked quickly reverting back from a serious hunter to the scrawny man in a leather jacket. "How did you find me?"
"I was able to track the Winchester brothers, did you really think you could hide from me." JJ said seriously as she took a seat at the kitchen table.
"What's with the suit?" JJ asked taking in the well fitting black jacket and matching dress pants. It was a nice material, made for durability, and should have given him a professional appearance but it seamed out of place with his disheveled brown hair and large ears.
"This is my fbi disguise, I had to ask some questions." Garth explained as he tugged on the edge of his jacket.
"You look like a funeral director." JJ admitted before she could stop herself. Her eyes widened a fraction of an inch realizing how disrespectful that must have sounded. She had been following this case using her instincts, knowing that if she thought things through too much she would end up going around in circles.
Garth however did not seem to mind her statement and instead sat down across from her. "Did you really track down Sam and Dean?" Asked tilting his head to the side slightly.
"Yes." JJ smiled.
"You and your partner burst into their motel room when they were cornered by Lilith." Garth added.
"Yes." JJ said again, her smile wavering at the memory as she unconsciously rubbing her wrist still remembering the cold grasp as she had been pinned to the wall.
"That's impressive. Lilith's supposed to be scary as hell and from what I heard about the Winchesters… their jawline is intimidating." Garth stated as he reached for a candy in the small bowl on the table tossing on of the, what looked like candy you would get from a dentist office, into his mouth.
"How did you find me exactly?" Garth asked.
"Hunters need very specific location, close enough to the creatures they are hunting, far enough away that they are not in immediate danger, and isolated from the general population." JJ said simply. "There were a limited number of motels in the that would appeal to you."
"So you just decided to check every motel room till you found me?" Garth asked.
"It was easy, I asked about a new guy in town. Found a motel near Angela's home, and still offered a back road for a quick getaway." JJ clarified further. She was actually surprised how easily she could find hunters now. Since Sam and Dean, she knew what she was looking for. It was only a matter of flashing her FBI badge and ask which clients paid in cash, or credit card (which she would then run a background check on the name), and who requested no maid or room service for the duration of their stay.
Garth nodded impressed with how quickly she found him.
"I read that changlings keep the children underground. I thought the woods would be the best place to look. I've already checked the caves no sight of them." JJ added a little disappointed that she had to come to Garth empty handed.
"All the legends about these creatures are old they could have adapted taken them to the sewers, warehouses, abandoned buildings." Garth explained.
"Basically anywhere." JJ frowned.
"How much time do we have?" JJ asked almost scared of the answer.
"Few weeks for the moms, the kids maybe less." Garth admitted sadly.
"Then you're going to need all the help to find them." JJ said seriously.
"Agent Jareau, I told you this is dangerous and you don't know the first thing about hunting." Garth explained seriously. "Best you say here and read the comics." He stated with his usual large grin. "That marmaduke is hilarious."
"No, I want to learn." JJ said firmly.
There was a long moment of silence as Garth stared her down. Waiting for her to flinch under his surprisingly intense gaze, she did not. He looked as if he was measuring her determination, looking for an answer to a question he had not asked.
"Alright then." Garth said finally. "But you have to do exactly as I say."
"I will." JJ nodded.
"Then I'll can the fed outfit, go casual, and we head to the park to stake out the baby changlings see if they can lead us to mamma." Garth said bluntly much to JJ's shock. It was perplexing how easily Garth could go from silly to serious in two seconds flat, and how he could easily combine the two.
Watching the children run around in the snow JJ paid particular attention to the children who remained huddled to their mothers side. Initially there had only been Miranda, then before long two other began acting strange, now there were a total of five.
"So this is where the changling is finding his victims." JJ stated keeping her gaze fixed on the children.
"Yeah." Garth nodded leaning forward and placing his elbows on his knees. "Chances are the mother changling is near by."
"So one of the parents or other volunteers." Garth explained.
JJ nodded turning her gaze to the parents. They looked tired, lines forming under their eyes with droopy lids. Even from a distance she could see how physically and emotionally drained they were, and how paranoid they were becoming towards their own children.
"They know something is wrong with their kids." JJ observed as she watched how they would flinch away when their children would reach for them.
"Most mothers realize something is strange with their child, but they can't do anything about it. Instinctually a mother can recognize their child, but they can't get past that this creature looks like their child."
Stacy, one of the mothers sat down abruptly as if she could no longer support herself.
"They are getting worst." JJ said sadly.
"Changlings feed on humans, specifically synovial fluid. Before long the parents wont be able to move, after that the changlings wont have any use for them." Garth explained as JJ committed his every word to memory.
"Do you think the mother changling is here now?" JJ asked.
"More then likely." Garth nodded as he looked across the field to the other adults. Volunteers, aunts, and passerby anyone of them could be the one targeting the kids. "We're going to have to investigate each one of them."
"That might not be necessary." JJ smirked as she stood from the bench. "Lets head back to the motel, I might be able to narrow it down."
"How?" Garth asked.
"I'm a profiler remember." JJ said proudly.
"You said it keeps the kids alive right?" JJ asked as she spread a map of the area across the motels small table.
"Yeah feeds on them." Garth nodded.
"Which means they would be taking care of the children. They would need food, water, heat, and privacy?" JJ listed as she pointed to a section of the map. "There has been construction work going on here, it would be a good place to hide a bunch of kids."
"Unless you got a locator spell handy we're going to have to search all these buildings." Garth pointed out. He remembered that area when he drove through town, a new subdivision was going up with lots of model homes.
"I got something better than a locator spell." JJ smiled.
"What's that?" Garth asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Penelope Garcia."
…
"Hey Penelope." JJ greeted casually well aware of Garth's confused expression behind her.
"Hey JJ, listen I know you've been distracted lately but are we still on for brunch this weekend?" The technical analysis asked her bubbly voice filling the phone.
"Of course wouldn't miss it." JJ answered.
"Great afterwards you Emily and I can go shopping, there's a sale at-"
"Penelope I was wondering if you were still at the office?" JJ cut her off needing to work quickly.
"Leaving now." Penelope answered as she stood from her chair and picked up her multicolored purse.
"Before you do I was wondering if you could de me a favor."
"Sure." Penelope responded instantly. "What do you need?"
"My friend Wendi son Damon ran away from home two weeks ago." JJ lied, the words falling from her lips easily even as a knot formed in her stomach from deceiving her friend.
"O my god did she follow a missing persons report?" Penelope asked quickly.
"Of course, but I was hoping you could help her." JJ continued.
"How?" Penelope questioned unsure how she could find them. "I mean I can search for credit card use or his phone-"
"No, Wendi said he left all that behind." JJ interrupted. "But we heard today that Damon was seen hanging around the new subdivision could you check records and see if any of the buildings have recently had food delivered there, or had the power turned on?" JJ asked as she turned to Garth who had finally caught on to her plan. "Anything to suggest someone has recently moved in. Wendi thinks he may be there with some of his friends."
"Pulling up power grid now." Penelope said as she turned on her computer and began typing. "A few houses have recently hade their power turned on. There are no records of anyone having food delivered to the house but that makes sense if it's a bunch of run away kids, they could just swipe it from a grocery store."
"Any way to narrow it down?" JJ asked.
"Way ahead of you. Pulling up property records, and bills of sales, to see which buildings have recently been bought, which need power for construction, and which have no business being on." Penelope answered.
"Six matches."
"Any of those building have a basement?" JJ asked.
"Why?" Penelope asked as she added that to her search.
"We'll bunch of rowdy teenagers, I figured if no one has made a noise complete they're probably partying in the basement where they wouldn't be heard." JJ answered.
"See this is why you're the profiler." Penelope smiled. "One hit. Should I call the cops?"
"No, no, I'll get Wendi and will drive down together. Thanks Garcia see you tomorrow." JJ smiled as she hung up the phone to give Garth a proud grin.
"Impressive." Garth nodded. "Lets get down there with some lighters and gasoline and light this sob."
