Golden thorns chapter thirty five

The next days passed quickly and before long Coran found himself in their dormitory on Sunday evening, staring dumbstruck at his three teammates as before him they held out the suit he had been looking at in The Coffee Shop.

"How… when?" it seemed his mouth wasn't going to work. Devlyn leaned over to Jo and not-so-whispered into her ear.

"You can practically see the cogs turning." Which earned him a snigger from the taller girl. "Hey dimwit, we cobbled together some of our cash and got you the suit while you were pretending to be ill."

"Thanks guys," Coran responded beamed, "and I wasn't pretending, wise guy."

"So are you gonna come with us this evening?" Jo asked

"Sure, why not," he said "I mean hell, we are going to have a fully trained huntsman with us tomorrow, are we not?"

Two hours, a shower and a change of clothes later and Coran was lying on his bed, dressed in his new suit, chatting to Dev while they waited for the girls to finish getting ready. Eventually there came a rapping at their door. "My money's on prince charming." Dev said, getting up and going over to the door.

"Who else would it be? It's not like we're the most popular team out there, cough RWBY cough."

"Coran, you're not jealous are you?" he replied, winking, as he opened the door. Sure enough, there was Ivory, standing proud in a white tux and black shirt, bright red rose protruding from his lapel.

"Hey," he said, strangely nervous, "I'm here to pick up Marie. Is she ready?"

"Hey! Marie! Jet's here. You almost done?" Devlyn called through the door to the bathroom. The door opened a crack and Jo poked her head out. "She'll be out in five," she hissed, "stall him," and she ducked back into the bathroom.

"I don't know if you heard that but she's not ready yet. D'you wanna come in?" Coran asked.

"Sure, I mean it's better than standing out here." He stepped into the room and glanced around at the various personal effects that they had decorated their room with: Jo's Achieve Men poster and headphones, a small pile of novels sat on Marie's bedside, a stack of notes and a weapons magazine on Devlyn's bed, and a small silver necklace that hung from Coran's bedpost. Coran saw the older guy's attention drawn to it and grabbed it, hiding it from sight

"So Jet," Dev said cheerily, "what's your story?"

"Umm, it's quite grim. I'd rather not talk about it tonight if it's all the same to you guys."

"That's alright. Are you local?" Dev said, changing the subject.

"Yeah, what about you guys?"

"Dev and Jo are. Marie, as I'm sure you are aware, is not. I-"Coran hesitated "I've been moving around quite a lot." He continued non-committaly.

"Tall, dark and anti-social over there doesn't like to talk about himself. Youre gonna have to get used to that."

"Devlyn. Must you insist on embarrassing me in front of our guest?"

"You don't need my help with that mate." He got up and went to knock on the bathroom door. Yet he was stopped by the door opening into his face. At the sudden jolt a dark blonde haired head poked around the corner. Marie looked at the prone Faunus with mild concern before reaching down a hand and pulling him up by the scruff of his neck.

"What have we told you about sleeping on the job? We have a party to attend" she stepped out from behind the door. She wore a pure white ankle length dress with a gold sash tied around her waist, her bangs fastened behind her head creating a circlet of gold. Coran glanced up, then did a small double take. She was stunning.
