It was the next day and Emma was taking Regina out to the pet shop like she had promised the day before to get some new things for the puppy. She turned up at the mansion late morning and smiled as she entered and could hear the sound of who she presumed would be Mary-Margaret in the kitchen, Josh was running around, going in and out of the family room, to the dining room, under the table and around the foyer pretending to be a plane and then she glanced to the side to the living room to see Regina sat on the sofa holding onto her puppy and talking to her.
She walked further in. "Hey squirt." Emma said to Josh, ruffling his hair a little as he stopped running around.
"Hey Emma!" He said happily. "Can I go with you and Gina? Pleaseee." He said following her as she began to walk over to the living room.
"Well…" Emma said stopping and crouching down to his level. "This outing is to get some stuff for Regina's new puppy it's Regina's thing so I think it should just be Regina and I but how about we get mom and you to meet us for some food afterwards? And we could go to the park too."
"Yea!" Josh said excitedly jumping up and down. "I go and tell mommy now." He said and turned on his heel running off to the kitchen.
Emma stood up and made her way into the living room. "Hey Regina. You ready to get going?" Emma asked, stuffing her hands into her pockets and watching the young teenage girl in front of her.
Regina looked over giving Emma a smile. She nodded her and she stood up, placing the puppy on the sofa behind her she straightened out her dress that she was wearing that reached to her mid thighs, a dress she was sure their father would not have liked. "I want to bring Twister with me. I don't think she should stay here. She may get lonely without me." Regina said reaching to the back of the sofa for her jumper.
"Sure kid. Bundle her into the carrier I got you." Emma shrugged. "Where'd you get the dress?"
Regina looked down then looked back at Emma. "Tink bought it for me, for my birthday. She said she saw me looking at it when we were wandering around town a couple of weeks ago. It's nice isn't it?"
"Has dad seen it?" Emma asked.
"Yes he has." Regina replied as she gently placed Twister into the carrier.
"And what was the verdict?"
"It's too short apparently." Regina said rolling her eyes. "But mom says it's fine. It's not that short. I am sure I could wear much shorter things."
"I'm sure you could." Emma replied.
"Hey Emma." Mary-Margaret's voice came from behind them and Emma turned round giving her a smile. "Josh was just telling me what you suggested."
"What did you suggest?" Regina asked stepping forward with the carrier in hand and looking between Emma and Mary-Margaret.
"Well Josh wanted to come along to the pet store but I suggested perhaps he and mom should meet us afterwards and we could grab a bite to eat and maybe go to the park or something." Emma explained.
"But I thought today was just us?" Regina asked with a frown.
Emma sighed. She had promised Regina they would spend the day together but then Josh wanted in too and she didn't have the heart to say no. He was only five after all. "I know Regina but we will still be at the pet store just me and you. Come on it will be fun, go the park have some fun and all."
"Fun? The Park?" Regina asked raising an eyebrow. "If you say so." She replied back sarcastically.
"Don't tell me your too old for the park as well now?" Emma sighed exasperatedly.
"I have been too old for the park for a while now Emma." Regina threw back.
"Well I think it's a wonderful idea Emma." Mary-Margaret said causing Regina to roll her eyes a little. "If you just let us know when you are finished at the pet store we could just meet you two at Grannies. I could see if David could get off for some lunch too."
"Yea sure." Emma replied. She then glanced over at Regina. "Right come on kid let's get going."
"Emma I'm not a kid anymore." Regina huffed as she made her way out of the house and over to Emma's yellow bug.
Emma rolled her eyes. "God…teenagers…"
"Yep." Mary-Margaret sighed. "I have a feeling she may not be an easy one."
"You can say that again." Emma said as she walked out the house.
Emma and Regina arrived at the pet store and Regina handed the carrier over to Emma as soon as they entered the store. She then opened her little handbag that Emma couldn't help but find adorable that she carried it around (although she would never say that too Regina in fear of getting her head bitten off) so that she could find the list she had written up the night before. She pulled out a piece of paper and Emma frowned as she saw just how much was written on the paper.
"Geeze Regina how much stuff are you wanting for Twister?" Emma asked.
"This is all essential stuff Emma. She needs a collar and a lead, a bowl for her food and water, a bed, some toys to play with, I was also thinking perhaps a coat in case it is raining when I have to take her out…"
"A coat? You want to get her a coat?" Emma asked.
"Yea…I don't want her to get cold."
"That what her fur is for…"
Regina rolled her eyes. "I think she should have a coat." Regina said as she turned on her heel and walked down an aisle. She glanced over all the collars , Emma suggesting a few and getting a few 'no that's not good enough for her' or 'no Emma she wouldn't suit that colour'. After a while Regina had settled on two collar candidates, a purple one with sparkles all over it and a pink one with sparkles all over it. She had been staring down at them for about ten minutes and Emma was beginning to get impatient.
"Come on Regina, just pick one."
"I don't know which one would suit her best. Do you think she is a purple or a pink?" Regina asked holding the collars up.
"Regina she's a dog." Emma replied.
"I know that but she might suit one better than the other."
"She's black and white. I have a feeling any one would do." Emma sighed. "Go with the purple. You love purple."
"Okay." Regina said nodding her head. She placed the pink collar back and then placed the purple one in the basket which consequently Emma was holding as well as the dog carrier. "I think I will get this cool purple lead to go with it." Regina said picking it up and placing it in the basket. She then looked down at her list. "Okay now that's done lets go look at the bowls."
"I have a feeling this is going to take a while." Emma mumbled.
"Oh stop your whining Emma. We need to get Twister the best stuff." Regina threw back.
They stopped in front of the selection of bowls. Emma pointed out all the simple ones that were either silver or were coloured but Regina did not think any of them were suitable for her little puppy. Regina then lunged forward as she saw a pink ceramic bowl that said in silver lettering 'Doggie Diva'.
"Oh this one is perfect. We can get two of these ones." Regina said picking the two up and placing them in the basket. "Oh and look we could get a place mat too. Let's get this one." Regina said picking up a cream placemat that had little brown paw prints all over it. "Oh and we will need one of these to scoop up all the food for the bowl." Regina said picking up a purple scoop. She placed all the items in the basket.
"Right, so we have collar, lead, bowl times two, placemat and scoop. What else do we need?" Emma said beginning to find the basket getting heavier.
"Erm…" Regina hummed looking at her list. "We need a bed for her."
Alright, hop to it then." Emma said motioning for Regina to go first. They walked down an aisle with beds all set up and Regina looked all around her for the best one. "Did you have a bed in mind Regina?"
"Not really. I think she should have a really cool one though. I want to get her blankets as well for when it gets cold." Regina replied.
"What about this one?" Emma asked pointing to a big square navy cushioned bed that had purple paw prints all over it. "Looks comfy enough."
Regina looked the bed over, felt it a little and then nodded her head. "I think that will do just fine. Good find Emma."
"That's why I'm the sheriff." Emma smiled. Regina also picked up a fleece blankets and then they walked down another aisle picking up a few chew toys and a bag of food. "Right that's got to be it right Regina?" Emma asked looking at all the items they were about to buy for the dog.
"But Emma I haven't got a coat for her yet."
"Regina are you really sure you need one?" Emma sighed.
"Yes. Please Emma. Pleaseee." Regina said putting on her puppy dog eyes and fluttering her eye lashes. Emma tried not to look into those eyes. She really tried but it didn't take long before she fell and the eyes broke her down. "Thank you Emma." Regina replied happily as she said fine then and they went in search for a coat for the puppy.
It didn't take long as Regina found a purple one to go with everything else and they went to the check out to get everything. Once Emma had paid they piled everything into the back of her bug and made their way to Grannies, Emma getting Regina to text Mary-Margaret to tell them they were finished and to come and meet them. They went into Grannies, Regina grabbing the collar and the dog carrier before hand and sat in a booth.
"Hey you two." Ruby said as she walked up to their table. "Where have you been?"
"Emma took me to the pet store to buy all new things for my puppy." Regina replied happily. "Look here she is. Did you see her yesterday?" Regina said holding the puppy up.
"No I didn't get to have a proper look! Oh she is adorable." Ruby smiled as she leaned down petting the dog. "What'd you call her Regina?"
"Twister. She's a bit crazy. Always chasing her tail, shadows, and actually she chases everything." Regina replied.
"Well she is so cute." Ruby said. "Bet your the best big sister now right?" Ruby asked addressing Emma now.
"Too right." Emma laughed.
"Excuse me, what are you doing with a dog in here?" Came grannies voice making them all cringe a little.
"Oops, maybe should have hid Twister." Regina whispered over to Emma.
"Yea we maybe should have kid." Emma whispered back.
Granny came over to the table, a scowl on her face and her hands on her hips. Regina gave her a big smile, big wide eyes and fluttering eye lashes and Emma and Ruby stood back and watched to see how Regina was going to handle this. They couldn't wait to see how it turned out. "Hi Granny. Did you see the new puppy Emma bought me yesterday? Look, isn't she cute?" Regina said holding Twister up.
The puppy looked up at Granny with big wide eyes, mirroring her owners. "Regina you know you aren't allowed dogs in the diner." Granny said trying to stay stern.
"I know but please can I have her in here just this once? I didn't want to leave her at home without me just now. I only just got her. I promise it won't happen again." Regina said. "And I won't let her go anywhere but here beside me. See I have her carrier to keep her in." Granny looked from the young girl, to the puppy and then the carrier as if trying to decided whether to let her off with it or not. "Please Granny." Regina said fluttering her eyelashes.
"Oh alright." Granny huffed. "Just this once Regina." Granny said before walking off.
Emma and Ruby watched open mouthed. "How did she do that?" Ruby asked looking at Emma.
Emma shrugged. "I think it's magic of some kind. She does it to me, Mary-Margaret, David, well everyone actually."
"I need to get her to teach me." Ruby said making Emma laugh. "So can I get you guys anything?"
"Erm…We will wait just now thanks. We are waiting for Mary-Margaret and Josh to turn up." Emma replied.
"Okay, just call when you want to order." Ruby said before turning on her heel and leaving them.
Emma looked over at Regina and smiled as she watched her gently holding the puppy down and putting the collar on her. She then lifted the puppy up and smiled. "Perfect." She said and then gently placed the puppy into the carrier. Regina then looked up at Emma. "What?" Regina asked with a frown as she noticed Emma was staring at her.
"Nothing." Emma shrugged. "Hey you could let Twister out for a run when we go to the par later…" Emma suggested.
"Maybe…" Regina replied.
"Maybe?"
"Well I don't want her to run away." Regina said.
"That's what the leads for kid. Just put her on that." Emma said.
Regina nodded her head. "I guess." She sighed. She ran her fingers through her long wavy brown hair as her eyes travelled to the door. Emma watched as Regina smiled shyly and dipped her head down.
She frowned as she watched Regina and she turned slightly to look behind her and saw that Robin had entered the diner with a few of his 'guy friends'. She noticed Robin give a small wave over to Regina and Emma turned back to see Regina return the wave. She smiled slightly as she noticed a small blush creep up onto Regina's cheeks. It seemed that a crush had formed between the two teenagers like many had suspected it would. "You wanna go say hi to Robin?" Emma asked.
Regina shook her head and grabbed a menu, looking it over even though she really didn't need to. She knew what she would be getting when her mother and little brother finally turned up. "No it's alright. He's busy anyway."
Emma was just about to reply when Mary-Margaret and Josh turned up. They both sat down, Mary-Margaret beside Emma and Josh beside Regina because he insisted on it. Ruby came over and they all ordered their usual meals and drinks. Emma then went back to what she was going to say to Regina. "So Regina…You like him don't you?" Emma asked motioning over to where Robin sat with his friends.
"Like who?" Regina asked, acting stupid but she knew exactly who Emma was talking about. She really did not want to talk about this in front of her mother.
"Robin of course." Emma said rolling her eyes.
"of course I like him he is my friend."
"Oh Regina you know what I mean. I mean you like him."
Regina rolled her eyes. "Don't be silly Emma. He is just my friend."
"Gina likes Robin, Gina likes Robin." Josh sang, giggling a little.
"No I don't!" Regina snapped, a glare firmly set on her face now. This was why she spent most of time in her bedroom nowadays she concluded to herself. Embarrassing family moments, only becoming more and more.
"Gina and Robin sitting in a tree, K.I.S.S.I.N.G" Josh sang, giggling more and more with each word and letter he sang, making Emma and Mary-Margaret laugh a little.
Regina rolled her eyes. "Josh shut up will you." Regina snapped. She did not like this.
"Regina be nice to your brother please." Mary-Margaret said. She then pulled Josh over to her lap so that she could wipe his face, a little breakfast from earlier still on his face that she hadn't noticed.
"Mommy what's the next part of the song again?" Josh asked.
"First comes love, then comes marriage…" Mary-Margaret started.
"Oh I remember…" Josh said excitedly. "Then comes a baby in a golden carriage." He sang and pointed at Regina.
Regina huffed and thumped her hands on the table, standing up. "Oh this is ridiculous!" She said angrily and then shuffled out from the table quickly and made her way over to the bathroom.
"Oh dear." Mary-Margaret sighed.
"That was probably my fault. I should have just left it." Emma said. "I just noticed when he came in she went all shy and blushing and all."
"Yes it's been a recent development in their friendship but neither have made a move to one another to say they like each other." Mary-Margaret explained. "I think I should perhaps go see if she is alright." Emma nodded and Mary-Margaret stood up and placed Josh down on the seat beside Emma. "You stay here with Emma sweetheart. I'm going to go check on Regina."
"Gina angry with me?" Josh asked looking a little upset now his big sister had gone off in a huff.
"I think she is angry with all of us sweetheart. She will be fine though." Mary-Margaret said. "I'll be back in a moment." She said and then turned on her heel and headed towards the bathroom. She took a deep breath, readying herself to face a huffy teenager and then pushed the bathroom door open and walked in to see Regina stood at the sinks looking in the mirror. Mary-Margaret closed the door behind her and walked over to Regina and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Regina…"
"I'm sorry." Regina said quickly before Mary-Margaret could say anything else.
"You're sorry?" Mary-Margaret asked with a small frown on her face.
Regina nodded her head. "For snapping at Josh and getting angry." She turned to Mary-Margaret and looked up at her and Mary-Margaret could see the tears in Regina's eyes. She knew the young girl was probably just confused with her moods and everything she was feeling. Becoming a teenager, Mary-Margaret remembered, was horrible in some ways. The hormones, the moods, everything.
Mary-Margaret crouched down a little and she took Regina's hands in hers and laced her fingers with hers. "Regina, sweetheart it's alright. I understand. Perhaps we took things a little too far. But nobody meant to upset you. Josh was just teasing, he didn't understand that you didn't like it. When he does that you have to make sure and tell him, nicely, that you don't like what he is doing."
"Okay." Regina sniffed. She then went to say something and then stopped herself, biting her lip.
"What? What is it Regina?" Mary-Margaret asked. She could see Regina warring with herself on whether to speak or not. "You can tell me, whatever it is."
"Something's wrong with me." Regina said quietly.
Mary-Margaret frowned at that. "What do you mean something's wrong with you?"
"I…I don't know…" Regina stuttered looking down at her feet.
Mary-Margaret placed a couple of fingers under her chin and gentle pushed Regina's face up so she was looking at her again. "Regina what's wrong with you? Please tell me. Maybe I can help you."
Regina let out a big sigh. "I'm…bleeding…" Regina said quietly.
"Your bleeding? Where?" Mary-Margaret frowned and then she noticed the blush forming on Regina's cheeks. "Oh your bleeding…" Mary-Margaret repeated understanding now what the young girl meant. "I see."
"So something's wrong with me…"
"Oh no sweetheart. Nothing's wrong with you." Mary-Margaret replied cupping Regina's cheeks in her hand. "It's perfectly normal. Okay you wait right here okay? I will be back in just one moment."
"Okay." Regina nodded.
Mary-Margaret stood up and quickly made her way out of the bathroom and back over to the booth where Emma and Josh were sat and there food was now on the table. Emma looked up. "Everything okay?" She asked.
Mary-Margaret nodded her head. "Yep we will both be out in just a moment." She replied leaning over and grabbing her hand bag.
"You sure everything is okay?" Emma checked.
"Yep, just now have a slight idea of exactly why Regina has been moodier recently." Mary-Margaret said before turning back on her heel and heading back to the bathroom. She entered the bathroom to see that Regina was stood in the same place she had left her. She crouched down on the floor again and placed her bag down. She opened it and searched through it until she came across what she was looking for. She held it up and Regina frowned a little. "Now Regina like I said it's a perfectly normal thing okay? Each month this happens to us women sadly, it might make you feel moody, sometimes you will feel horrible, sometimes you will feel alright but it's not something you need to worry about okay? It just means you are becoming a woman."
"So I'm now a woman?" Regina asked.
"In a roundabout way yes. It's something called your period. Nothing to worry about, it's a bit of a pain every month but we all go through it. The men have it easy and they don't even know it." Mary-Margaret said nudging Regina playfully trying to make her laugh, she did so and Mary-Margaret smiled. "Now this will help you…" Mary-Margaret said and she went on to explain things more to Regina and what to do with the sanitary towel.
"Okay…" Regina said taking it from Mary-Margaret and walking over to one of the toilet stalls.
"Do you want any help?" Mary-Margaret asked as she stood up.
Regina bit her lip, thinking about it and then shook her head. "No I think I will be alright." She then went to turn to go into the toilet but she quickly turned back round and walked back over to Mary-Margaret and wrapped her arms around her waist. "Thank you mom." She said before turning back round and going into the toilet.
"I can't believe this!" David said as he flopped down onto the sofa a hand to his head. "Is it not enough she has just turned thirteen but then this happens?"
"It's not as if it could be stopped. Mother nature and all." Mary-Margaret laughed as she sat down beside David.
"How is she about it?" David asked. He felt a little awkward with this conversation.
Mary-Margaret shrugged. "She was a bit worried at first but she seems alright about it now. I have explained everything to her, a little at the diner this afternoon and more back here. She seems to understand everything. I think she just got a bit freaked out."
David nodded his head. "I can't believe this." He repeated and Mary-Margaret laughed and shook her head. "Now she is a proper woman. It's not fair. It's too fast."
"Who'd have thought you'd get this attached to her?" Mary-Margaret said quietly with a smile on her face.
"I'm as surprised as you are." David replied. "I guess…does that explain her moods?"
"Partly. They are partly because she is just a teenager and partly because of that. I think her foulest of moods may be because of that, or at least I am hoping they are because then we only have them over that certain time of the month."
David nodded his head. He then sighed as once again the sound of Regina's music could be heard travelling through the house. He was sure he had told her at least five times since he had gotten in the house that night to turn her music down yet it never seemed to go any lower. "I'm going to go tell her to turn that music down, again!" He stood up and walked out of the living room and up the stairs heading towards Regina's room. He placed his hand on the door handle about to walk in when he realised perhaps since his little girl was growing up so fast he should probably knock on the door first because after all he would expect her to do that for him. So he did, he knocked on the door and he waited until Regina opened her bedroom door her music now louder since her door was open.
"Yes dad?" Regina asked peering round the door.
"Regina how many times do I need to ask you to turn your music down?" David sighed.
"I have turned it down."
"Then why does it still seem as loud as last time I asked you?"
Regina shrugged her shoulders. "I have no idea dad. Surely that is low enough?"
"No Regina that is not low enough. Your mother and I can hear it all the way down stairs in the living room." David replied.
"Lucky it's good music then." Regina sassed back to him with a smirk on her face. She was pushing him and she knew it.
"Well that's up for debate. Now come on Regina turn it down." David said.
Regina sighed and she left the door letting it swing open further and walked over to her laptop that was sitting on her desk. She pressed the volume button a couple of times and then looked at David with a questioning eyebrow who motioned for her to put it lower. "Really?" Regina whined.
"Yes really." She huffed slightly and then pressed the volume button down again. "A bit more." She huffed again and once again pushed the volume button down. This time the music was much lower. "Perfect." David said.
"Perfect? Seriously? It's far too low dad." Regina huffed.
"Regina you can still clearly hear your music." David replied as he looked around her room to see clothes all over the place. "What are you doing Regina?"
"I am going through my clothes." Regina replied as she walked around David and over to a pile of clothes. She picked up a top and held it up to him. "Some of my clothes are really far too babyish dad. They need to go."
"Aw but Regina this top is nice." He said taking the top from her. It was a red top with sparkles all over it and a bow at one side at the top.
Regina arched an eyebrow at him. "Dad seriously? I am far too old for that top now. Someone else can have it now."
"If you say so Regina." He said. "Is this what your keeping?" He asked pointing to a big pile of clothing.
Regina shook her head. "No I don't want any of that."
"None of it?"
"Nope." Regina said as she walked back over to her wardrobe.
David nodded. "Okay, call me when you're finished and I will bag it all up for you." David said as he made his way out the room.
"Okay dad." She called back after him.
David made his way downstairs and back into the living room where Mary-Margaret was still sat on the sofa. "She is far too old for her own good that one!" He said as he flopped back down on the sofa making Mary-Margaret laugh.
Authors Note:
Well my lovely readers I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I wanted to add in a little more of Regina becoming a teenager and I thought this particular thing can be a very important yet scary thing and somehow while writing this chapter this just kind of happened...Not sure how really. But anyway I hope you all liked where I went with it and how I had the characters dealing with it.
I am thinking that I will move Regina on again in age very soon as I have quite a few things planned for when Regina is 16/17 and I would like to move onto more dramatic things as this story has really not been very dramatic yet and I think we are all in need of some drama.
I will let you know exactly when I am moving on. Feel free to let me know what you think!
