A/N: it's been a long, long, LONG, while I know. I've been in the school play and rehearsing every day until five pm. As the months go it'll get longer and longer until the week of the production so between that, homework, and trying to get enough sleep I haven't had time to type. I do hope you all enjoy this chapter update though.
Chapter 12
Two days later…
"More reports of break-ins and vandalisms are starting to spread throughout the area as a rapid increase in this crime…"
The television blared out the latest news and Dean couldn't believe his eyes. There it was, Harvelle's Pet Shop for angels, trashed, vandalized and all while Jo and Ellen stood around teary eyed and picking up the trash that remained. They had a shot of Jo sweeping up broken glass from one of the cages and Ellen talking to the reporters.
"I don't understand who would want to harm such beautiful little creatures much less steal them," Ellen said. "Whoever it is clearly has no heart and I can't wait until their sorry ass is caught."
Dean swallowed hard. What once was his home was now a mess and filled with broken glass and shattered hearts of baby angels that were most likely terrified by the vandals. Wait? Steal? Dean had to do a double take on that one, baby angels were missing!
"Jody," Dean walked over to her, she was busy reading a book at the dining room table. "Someone vandalized Harvelle's Pet Shop, they stole baby angels."
Jody's police instincts clicked on at once, but she remained calm and set her book down, facing her eldest angel. Dean normally kept his wings out around the house so when caught sight of his wings, quivering in nervousness and anxiety she knew she had to do something.
"I'll go down to the station Dean," Jody said. "And see what they have on the case."
"Can I uh," Dean fidgeted a bit, he hated sitting idle when he could do something. "Can I go to Harvelle's with Sammy? It was…our home for a long time."
"Yes Dean," Jody smiled. "You should. Tell me when you want to go home ok and I'll come get you?"
"Ok Jody." Dean nodded and turned off the television before grabbing his jacket and walking out the door. Sam was at Castiel's and Gabriel's and Dean figured Castiel and Gabriel would like to come with as well. It had been their home for a short amount of time too. Dean pulled his jacket closer and strolled down the sidewalk towards Castiel's house. He rang the doorbell and fidgeted a bit more as the door opened.
"Hey Cas," Dean smiled and let himself in. "Where's Sam and your brother?"
"On the couch," Castiel said. "Why?"
"We all need to get down to Harvelle's Pet Shop now," Dean explained, immediately gaining the attention of Sam and Gabriel who perked up on the couch and turned towards Dean. "They've been robbed and vandalized. Someone stole a bunch of baby angels."
"Stole them," Sam asked. "Why in the hell…?"
"I don't know," Dean replied. "But we should go down there and see if we can't find out who did it."
Gabriel and Sam stood from the couch and grabbed their jackets. Castiel grabbed his brown trench coat that he often liked to don and Dean held the door for all of them before shutting it behind them as they left. Tiny raindrops started falling, almost as if to mock the already crappy day ever since Dean had heard the news, but on the crew marched.
When they arrived, the window was covered in a giant tarp which hid the gaping hole as well as the unidentifiable graffiti that had been tagged on the building ever since the break in. Dean saw Jo sweeping up more glass and immediately walked up to her and hugged her. Jo was confused at first as to who was randomly embracing her, but as she looked over Dean she suddenly broke into a smile.
"Why is this little baby Dean I raised," she chuckled a bit half heartedly. "You grew up into a strong handsome Alpha didn't you? Look at your wings and your physique."
"Gee thanks Jo," Dean chuckled. "You're not looking too bad yourself, but truth is we came here because we heard about what happened and I wish I could say we came under better circumstances."
"We," Jo asked and Dean stepped aside to reveal Sam, Gabriel, and Castiel who all smiled and waved and Jo suddenly remembered. "My, didn't you all grow up handsome. Come in; come in, into whatever's left of this place I suppose…"
Dean and the others stepped inside and saw the extent of the wreckage. The cages were filled with baby angels, some sleeping, and some shaking and still nervous from the break in and others…missing. The cages, empty and lacking life, the angels remaining, scared for their lives, and Jo and Ellen, still trying to pick up the pieces. Dean walked closer to the cages and the baby angels jumped in fear and their tiny wings shook. Dean let his hand rest against the glass and the two wide eyed baby angels in the cage seemed to slowly calm themselves. One of them, clearly the older one, crawled carefully closer to Dean and lifted his tiny hand, placing it on the glass right where Dean's was on the other side. Dean smiled.
"Hi there little guy," Dean bowed his wings that he silently and slowly had let out, in a submissive manner to show he wasn't a threat even though he was much bigger. "I'm sorry you were scared by whoever did this, but don't you worry me and my friends? We're gonna find them, we're gonna find them for you."
The baby angel chirped and flapped his wings a little bit as Dean took his hand away and continued walking with Jo towards the back where Ellen sat, writing checks and sighing. She looked up only when Jo cleared her throat and presented their former tenants. Ellen stood an astonished look on her face and silently she hugged Dean who graciously hugged her back.
"Hey Ellen," Dean looked her in the eyes and smiled, Ellen touched his face and the scars that still remained from the Angel Pound, his necklace from John dangled around his neck, a red hot constant reminder of what had happened to him and his brother. "It's been awhile…"
"That is has Dean," Ellen moved on to hug Sam, then Castiel and Gabriel. "You've all grown up so much. Some of our best…"
Ellen seemed lost, she seemed depressed and Dean could sense her range her emotions. Dean turned from a mourning angel to a determined angel.
"We're going to find them," Dean grabbed Ellen's arm before she could sit down again. "We're going to find out who did this and make them pay."
"What," Sam exclaimed. "Dean we can't promise that!"
"You're kind Dean," Ellen smiled, a half hearted smile. "But this isn't your place; it's not what you have to do. You four should go live your lives with those wonderful men that adopted you. Your place is with them."
"John is dead," Dean abruptly said. "And the woman Sam and I live with now is a police officer; she's already investigating this case. It only makes sense that Sam and I help you. So yes Ellen I hate to be the blunt Alpha that I am, but I am certain that it is mostly definitely our place."
Ellen didn't say much. She simply stared the Alpha in his stunning green eyes which she swore the color flared up when Dean spoke. Ellen sighed, she hadn't wanted Dean or the others to be involved in such a dangerous life as theirs, but as fate would have it here they were so Ellen figured now she had no other choice.
"Alright then," Ellen replied finally and turned to the others as well. "You want to help us, but you must realize you have to extremely careful."
"Ellen is there something you've neglected to tell us?" Castiel asked he sensed her suspicious behavior.
"There are those who are advocating getting the Angel Mills of the world closed down," Ellen explained. "Crowley's mill is the largest worldwide, he imports and exports angels as if they're toys to play with. He mistreats them and abuses them, mating them dry until they die. His methods are torturous and no angel should have to go through them, Jo and me among others, we rescue as many of them as we can and take them here and other "Pet Shops"."
"So you're basically the Mill police?" Gabriel chuckled, but then quickly shut up with the look Castiel gave him.
"We're called Hunters on the streets," Ellen explained. "But Enemy Number One by Crowley and anyone associated with him. We're technically the black market of angel sellers and anyone who buys our angels usually supports the cause."
"So Bobby and John…" Dean said breathlessly.
"They're Hunters as well," Jo nodded. "And damn good ones at that, they've both fostered and raised so many of the Mill angels we've rescued over the years. Although I suppose you two were John's last…"
Sam and Dean let out a collective sigh before turning to one another.
"Dean you can't be serious about this," Sam protested, keeping his voice low. "I mean this is Crowley's Mill we're talking about, where Cas and Gabe came from, where our mother supposedly escaped from. This could mean life or death for us."
"This isn't about us anymore Sammy," Dean replied. "Baby angels are being taken, stolen back to the life they had a chance of escaping and I just can't sit by while these baby angels and Jo and Ellen suffer. This was our life at one time too, our home was here. We can't let our family fight this alone."
"John would want us to be careful," Sam replied. "Mom would want us to be careful."
"John and mom both," Dean sternly replied. "Would want us to do the right thing and the right thing is this take it or leave it Sammy. Now, are you in or are you out?"
Sam hesitated a moment before answering. There was a part of him that knew they should stay out of it all, but the other part of him, the Alpha part of him, the better part of him, told him it was their place.
"Alright," Sam sighed and nodded, earning collective nods from the other two as well. "I'm in."
