"Hey! Serena! Calem! We're over here!" Shauna waved as the two walked into the small café for breakfast. Calem grinned, and waved back while Trevor ducked his head in embarrassment of Shauna's huge waving and loud exclamations. Tierno simply waved happily with her. Serena walked over, donning the same pink parka, jeans, and pink ball cap, her hair down and tied at the end like it usually was. Both sat down at the rounded table, Calem immediately taking a menu.
"I'm starving, I tell you!" he said, glancing over. "So, how's it been? Good? Bad?"
"Pretty good!" Shauna answered. "I've been training super hard with Togepi and she evolved into Togetic! She's so cute!"
"I've been filling up my pokédex as much as possible." Trevor said after a waitress took their order in, thankfully from Serena's perspective, English. After this, they continued with their conversation.
"And you, Tierno?" Serena asked. "How's your dance team going?"
"Great! I'm finding all sorts of great pokémon!" he blushed, grinning sheepishly. "In fact, I ran into a pretty lady who watched my dance moves."
"Tierno, you sly Furfrou!" Calem exclaimed. "Who was the lucky lady, eh? What'd she say?"
"Um, she didn't give me her name, though I wish I asked!" Tierno exclaimed. "She didn't say anything either, but she seemed happy. She dropped this, though." he pulled out a necklace from his pocket. He opened his palm, revealing a leaf charm with a stone in the middle, a rainbow swirling design.
"Hey, that kinda looks like..." she trailed off, pulling out Kirlia's pokéball. The pokémon popped out, glancing around shyly as Serena pulled the mega stone from her neck. "A mega stone, don't you think?"
"You're right..." Tierno said, comparing the two stones. "Wouldn't it be cool if this actually is a mega stone? Talk about amazing!" he exclaimed. "But I'd like to give it to you. I'm going to be honest that I have no interest in mega evolution. Maybe you and Calem and Trevor and Shauna could make better use of it."
"Really? Are you sure?" Serena asked, looking at the necklace, then looking back at Tierno.
"Sure! You're way stronger than me. I still remember your battle against Shauna way back in Aquacorde." he grinned, dropping the pretty necklace into the palm of her hand. Serena looked at it, blinking, before placing it around her neck. They absentmindedly talked about their journeys. Their food came, and they began eating.
"So what now?" Shauna asked. "I know Prof. Sycamore wanted us to see the Mega Evolution Guru, but what should we do after that?"
"I want to challenge the gym." Calem said. "And I'm pretty sure Seré would want to do that as well." Serena offered up an idea.
"Maybe we should find the woman who dropped this," she placed her hand over the necklace with the supposed mega stone embedded in it. "And return it to her. She may not have known what she lost."
"But we don't even know if it's a Mega Stone or not." Trevor stated. "Plus this woman could be anywhere by now."
"But it doesn't mean we don't have the means to find her." Serena said. "Do you remember what she looks like?"
"Brown hair," Tierno said immediately. "Straight, reaches her lower back. Didn't catch her eye color, medium skin tone, about twenty years old."
"Anything else?" Shauna asked, absentmindedly stirring her drink with her straw.
"I dunno, she was dressed rather simply, at least on Kalosian standards. Really quiet. Unnaturally quiet, actually." Tierno shrugged. "What else can I tell you?"
"I dunno." Calem shrugged. "She sounds like the woman we ran into yesterday. She found us in Reflection Cave and lead us out."
"That was nice of her." Trevor said. "We should find her as quickly as possible. Where'd she go?"
"Well, after a rather one-sided conversation," Serena mused. "She just walked off. No idea where she went, but it was late so I doubt she travelled through the night."
"So maybe she's still in the city!" Shauna exclaimed, jumping up. "Lets go look for her!" she slammed some money on the table and ran off. Serena blinked.
"Should I go and tell her we haven't even received the bill yet?"
o.0.o.0.o
"Nothing." Shauna sighed as the five friends met up on a small beach. "This woman you guys saw is like a ghost. We must've covered everything and still couldn't find her."
"We haven't covered that, yet." Serena said, pointing to the tower in front of them. "It's huge! Amazing, even. What is it?" Trevor immediately pulled out his Halo Castor, glancing at the tower, then back at the hologram.
"It's called the Tower of Mastery." Trevor said. "Apparently, it's a tribute to Mega Evolution and the home of the Mega Evolution Guru."
"That's the man that the professor wanted us to see, right?" Shauna asked.
"You know," Calem mused, placing his chin in his hand. "I have to wonder if the Kanto dexholders are here. I mean, Prof. Sycamore said he was providing them with the tools necessary for Mega Evolution. Maybe they went to the Mega Evolution Guru as well."
"I guess there's only one way to find out." Shauna smiled, running ahead. "Let's go, people!" Tierno laughed, beginning to follow Shauna while Trevor jogged to catch up with her. Serena and Calem followed after them, stopping as they reached the gateway.
"This is amazing..." Serena said, glancing at the huge stone archways as the five walked inside.
"Whoa..." Shauna gaped, staring up at a huge stone statue of a pokémon. All five of the teenagers were awestruck, staring at the pokémon. It looked familiar, yet different.
"Is that a Lucario?" Trevor finally asked.
"Looks like it." Calem responded.
"Ah, I thought I heard something." an elderly man stepped out from behind a wooden door. Serena widened her eyes at the amazing lack of hair on his head, but the overwhelmingly large eyebrows over his eyes. "Who are you?"
"I'm Trevor." Trevor said immediately. "We're here upon Prof. Sycamore's behalf."
"Ah, the five dexholders." the elderly man said, smiling slightly. "Sycamore told me you would be coming. I'm called the Mega Evolution Guru. I guess you could say I'm an acquaintance of his. Oh, but Mega Evolution Guru isn't my real name, of course. My name is Gurkinn!" he smiled slightly, then looked over his shoulder. "Come out here for a moment, will you?" he exclaimed over his shoulder.
Surprisingly five people came out of the tiny room. Serene recognized Dayna, Fire, Gary, and Korrina-whom was holding a small black case- immediately, but was surprised by the woman who helped her and Calem yesterday. She glanced at Serena, then widened her eyes for a moment.
"Oh!" Tierno exclaimed. "You're the woman who watched my dance! You see, my friend here found your necklace you dropped." he grinned, nodding towards Serena. "This is Serena. I'm Tierno, and that's Calem and Shauna."
"Is this yours, miss?" Serena asked, slipping the necklace off her neck and holding out to the woman. She lowered her head, a very slight nod, and held her hand out. Serena place that necklace in her palm, and she quickly slipped it around her own neck.
"Ah, so you found her Keystone?" Gurkinn asked, glancing at the woman. Serena waved her hand in front of her.
"Oh, no, Tierno found it. I just held onto it for him."
"What?! Uh, it was you who found it, right, Seré?" Tierno asked, alarmed. Gurkinn chuckled slightly.
"Well, who found it doesn't really matter. What's important is that you were honest. If you tell lies, the truth is clouded and eventually lost..." he trailed off. "Anyways, I'm sure you may know this already, but these four are the Kanto dexholders, also researching Mega Evolution."
"L-Leaf G-Green?" Serena stuttered out in realization, staring at the brunette woman, whom stared blankly back. There was a long silence before Fire's laughter cut it short.
"I'm sorry," he said, waving his hand in front of him. "It's just, it took you so long to figure out! It was hilarious!" Dayna giggled behind her hand, looking up at them.
"Poor Tierno, I think we sent him into shock." everyone turned to the teen, whom had his mouth handing agape, frozen in shock.
"Uh, Tierno?" Trevor asked.
"Tiernee?" Shauna asked.
"He'll be fine, I'm sure." Trevor said. "Give him a minute." there was a pause.
"Leaf, no, Miss Green! You took the time out of your no doubt incredibly busy schedule to watch my sub-par dancing! For that I thank you!" he pressed his hands together and bowed quickly. Leaf tilted her head to the side slightly, then crossed her arms. She leaned towards Gary, her lips moving slightly.
"Ah, she enjoyed your dance, and called you stupid for belittling yourself." Leaf said something to Gary again, barely making any noise at all. "She says to she was happy to watch your talent, though she'd never say nor show it. Ignore that. It's just the way she is." he said. Tierno raised from his bow, glancing at Leaf with sparkles in his eyes.
"Total admiration, eh?" Calem joked. Tierno turned to him.
"She's Leaf Green! And she enjoyed my dance! I could receive no greater compliment!" he said.
"So you're here to study Mega Evolution too?" Gary asked.
"Yes." Serena said, turning her gaze back to him. "Like Trevor said, we came on Prof. Sycamore's request."
"I'm sorry mister," Shauna said. "But who's that girl over there?"
"Oh, this is my granddaughter Korrina. She's Shalour City's Gym Leader, as well as a Mega Evolution Successro. So, Sycamore's pupils. Now that you're all here... I suppose I should explain Mega Evolution to you. I assume you all know about Pokémon Evolution?"
"I know! I know! Um... You have your Pokémon battle a lot, and then they grow stronger and evolve! Oh, and there are Pokémon that evolve with certain items~!" Shauna exclaimed. Trevor cast a sideways glance.
"Some pokémon also evolve with lots of friendship or affection." he continued. "If you're kind to your pokémon, like an Eevee, it may evolve into an Espeon or Umbreon, or if the Eevee likes you enough, it may evolve into Sylveon."
"Indeed! Mega Evolution is a transformation of Pokémon that were thought to be unable to evolve any further! It's a whole new level of power!" Gurkinn exclaimed.
"So it's like a fourth line of evolution?" Serena asked. "Like, Squirtle evolves into Wartortle, then Blastoise, then... Mega Blastoise?"
"Exactly!" Gurkinn said. "But there's a reason why I used the word "transformation" a moment ago. Mega Evolution differs from Evolution because it ends after a certain amount of time, usually after the opponent is defeated, the trainer is rendered unresponsive, or the pokémon is knocked out. In other words, it's a temporary Evolution."
"Wait a moment." Calem said, speaking up. "So the pokémon evolves, then it returns to the way it went before?"
"Yes." Gurkinn responded. "There are three things required for Mega Evolution. One is the Mega Stone for the pokémon. The second is a Key Stone for the trainer. The third, and most important, is the bond between the pokémon and trainer."
"Bond?" Trevor asked.
"Yes." Gurkinn replied. "Mega Stones are hard to come across. There's an estimated five of each stone throughout the entire world, Keystones even harder to find. Only twenty-five known pokémon can Mega Evolve, only one able to take on two different Mega Evolution forms: Charizard. Meaning that there's about one hundred, fifty mega stones in the whole world. On top of that, Keystones are not simply found by the random person. Keystones are found either by their chosen successor- they are called 'Found Successors'- or a successor is chosen by someone with the blood of the first person to ever Mega Evolve a pokémon- them being called Chosen Successors.."
"Oh wow!" Shauna exclaimed. "So were they," she nodded towards Leaf, Gary, Dayna, and Fire. "Chosen Successors or Found Successors?"
"We're all Found Successors." Dayna answered, moving some hair to reveal the knot holding her scarf-headband in place. At the knot was a rainbow stone embedded in a silver ring attached to the scarf. "This is my Keystone. I found it in the Viridian Forest." Fire held up his fingerless-gloved hand, showing them the stone embedded in the glove.
"Found mine during some extreme training on Mt. Ember." he grinned.
"Found mine recently." Gary said, holding up a piece of amber, which seemed to have the stone petrified in it. "In the Glittering Cave. Leafy here," he tugged playfully at her necklace. She let out a small sigh. "Found hers atop Mt. Silver. I had it put in this cute little necklace here. It's really important to her, so thanks for returning it."
"Yes, yes." Gurkinn said, frowning slightly. "Since Professor Sycamore entrusted each one of you with a Pokédex, I would like to give these items to all of you... I'd like to share them with you, but..." he paused. "I have no Mega Stones to provide for you. Even so, there is only one Keystone that I can give to you. It's a very precious item. That's why my research isn't getting anywhere... So, I want all of you to decide among yourselves which one of you will be the one who challenges the Mega Evolution successor."
"Well, I know that Prof. Sycamore provided Mega Stones with the three starters, Blastoisinite, Charizardite Y, and Venusaurite he gave to Serena, Shauna, and Calem respectively." Trevor said.
"He gave Mega Stones to us, too." Fire said. "Venusaurite for Leaf, Charizardite X for Gary, Blastoisinite for me, and Mawilite for Dayna."
"Yes." Gurkinn said. "I entrust all Mega Stones I come across the Prof. Sycamore since I lack the proper security to protect them here."
"Well," Tierno said. "I'll pass. Pokémon battling isn't really my scene. So, Mega Evolution would be way out of my league."
"I want to complete the Pokédex first." Trevor said. "If you try to do too much at once, you won't accomplish anything."
"Smart words, lad." Gurkinn said. He turned to Serena, Calem, and Shauna.
"Me, too!" Shauna exclaimed, glancing at Trevor. "It really would be a cool memory, and it does look interesting..." she trailed off, her eyes moving to Calem and Serena. "But Mega Evolution should be left to the Mega trainers!"
"So that leaves the two of us..." Serena trailed off. "How're we gonna decide?"
"You're both really strong." Tierno said, head whipping back and forth between them.
"We all witnessed it back on route seven." Trevor stated.
"When it comes to trainers, I don't know many people stronger than Serena and Calem!" Shauna said, then turning to the four Kanto dexholders. "Except for you guys, of course!"
Leaf leaned towards Gary again, murmuring something. Gary glanced at her.
"That's not a bad idea." Gary said slowly. "So, Mega Evolution relies on the bonds of pokémon and trainer. Leaf thinks the best way to test the bonds of pokémon and trainer is to battle. So battle it out for it." Calem stepped froward, stretching his arms above his head.
"I'm cool with that." he said. "I wanna set myself apart from everyone else. Mastering Mega Evolution would certainly do that." Serena blinked, then grinned.
"Alright, then! How about three on three?" Serena asked, holding up a pokéball. "Sound fair?"
"Of course!" Calem exclaimed. They jumped back a bit, making room for a makeshift battlefield. "Frogadier!"
"Braixen!" Serena exclaimed at the same time, immediately cursing the type matchup. The two pokémon smirked at each other, and with Her mind went into default mode, trying to figure out how to make this work for her.
"If you have a fire type up against a water type," Serena cringed as she recognized the voice of the man in her dreams, the fatherlike figure who's eyes she couldn't see. "Use Sunny Day! It powers up fire type moves, weakens water type moves, plus makes a quick and easy Solar Beam!"
"But dat's a gwass move, Daddy." a little girl... the brunette? No, she sounded younger, incapable of fully pronouncing her 'r's or 'th's. Maybe... Maybe a two year old?
"I know, but quite a few fire type pokémon can learn it, making for a good comeback against a water-type."
"Grgh..." she grumbled. "Braixen, Sunny Day!"
"Surf!" Calem ordered quickly as the sun blistered down on them from a small golden orb in the sky.
"Solar Beam!" Serena ordered quickly, silently crossing her fingers as she saw the huge wave wash over her starter. "Braixen!" Suddenly, a beam of golden yellow light shot from the wave of water, slamming into Frogadier. Both pokémon shrieked at the attacks. Once the attacks cleared, they saw that their starters were both fainted.
Both trainers were surprised by the quickness of the battle, but neither hesitated to return their faithful starters and send out their next pokémon.
"Absol!"
"Eevee!" Serena exclaimed. Eevee did a flip before she landed on the ground, smiling playfully at her opponent.
"Swords Dance!" Calem ordered immediately. Absol's horn glowed for a moment, then several scythe like glowing blades floated in that air, circling Absol as he danced in the circle. They stopped, clanging together over his head, then he glowed orange, indicated the raise in stats. Serena smiled.
"Use swift!" she ordered. Eevee leapt up, tail glowing, then unleashed a flurry of golend stars on Absol, who dodged them somewhat skillfully, but still managed to get hit. "Quick Attack!" before Absol could respond, Eevee was behind him, slamming into his side.
"Night Slash!" Calem ordered. Before Serena or Eevee could utter a word, Absol's darkness-engulfed horn threw Eevee into the air.
"Regain your balance, use Swift again!" Serena exclaimed hurriedly. Eevee did so, sending golden stars flying, but then Absol jumped up after the tiny fox. He went right through the stars, ignoring that they were ramming into him, and then slashed Eevee again with Night Slash. Eevee landed on the ground with a loud thud, swirls in her eyes to show that she was unconscious. Serena ground her teeth. Perhaps it was stupid to send Eevee in so recklessly as if she was simply battling wild pokémon for leveling up. Calem was, and she hated to admit it since she had never once battled against him before, a serious force to be reckoned with.
"Roselia!" Serena exclaimed, letting the pokémon out. It hummed out it's name, gracefully, smiling slyly at her opponent. "Petal Dance!" Roselia twirled gracefully, petals slashing through Absol, sending it skidding to a halting stop. Calem ordered another attack, bringing out a second pokéball, knowing that Absol would run out of HP soon.
He felt the pokéball in the palm of his hand, but it suddenly felt very heavy. Almost unbearably so. He watched Serena thrust out her arm to emphasize an order she gave to Roselia. He briefly remembered her response to seeing his Fletchinder back when they battled the Snorlax together, and remembered even earlier in their journey, when he saved him from that huge flock of Fletchling.
"Ab-sol!" Absol exclaimed, a warning, stating that he couldn't last much longer. Calem glanced down at his pokéball in his hand, and clipped it on his belt. Rashly, he grabbed a random pokéball as Absol fell, sending out the creature inside as he returned his fainted Absol.
"Tyrunt!" the small dinosaur exclaimed, grinning wickedly at the challenge. Calem nearly facepalmed as the pokémon attempted to roar menacingly. He hadn't had much time to work with Tyrunt. He was to busy training his other pokémon...
"Grass Knot! Trap it, just like we practiced!" Serena ordered, snapping him out of his revere. Rosalie raised her rose-hand up in the air, slim vines sprouting quickly from the ground, tangling Tyrunt up where it stood. Serena grinned, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw Leafs expression change slightly, and for a brief second, there was a smile, as if she was remembering something pleasant. Calem furrowed his brow for a moment, then came up with an idea.
"Tyrunt, Thrash!" he ordered, pointing to Rosalie. Tyrunts eyes glowed red for a moment, then it thrashed wildly about, snapping the constricting blades of grass then running wildly forward, clawing and biting at Roselia. Roselia tried to keep out of distance of the uncontrollable pokémon, but it was getting harder and harder with each passing moment.
"Roselia, Petal Dance!" again, the grass pokémon danced, petals sprouting from it's rose-like hands, whipping at Tyrunt as it mercilessly attacked Roselia. Tyrunt kept on attacking, suddenly hurting itself and not caring about what was happening around it. It had a target, and it had to defeat it, no matter what.
"Tyrunt!" Calem exclaimed. "Stop! Focus!" the ground-dragon duel type whipped it's head to it's trainer, eyes still glowing red and obviously disoriented, and charged. Calem blinked, taking an instinctive step back as he saw his pokémon charging at him.
"Calem!" Serena exclaimed while another voice exclaimed someone another name.
"Leaf!" Gary exclaimed.
Calem cringed as Tyrunt jumped up, then heard a slam. In front of him was a powerful looking barrier. He looked up, seeing everyone staring across the battlefield at Serena, whom stared in surprise at a single person. He turned his head as he saw everyone else staring in slight surprise at Leaf Green. Beside her was Slowking, eyes glowing blue as the forcefield stood in front of him. Her eyes were cold as she glanced at Tyrunt. Slowkings forcefield weakened, and then it attacked Tyrunt. Immediately, it fell, fainted.
"W-W-Why did you d-do that?!" exclaimed Serena. Leaf cast her a glance, returned her Slowking, then moved past everyone and going to the ramp that spiraled up above their heads. She walked up the ramp, her boots echoing off the stone walls as she climbed up higher. "H-Hey!" Serena exclaimed, bolting to follow her, but was stopped the minute she reached the base of the ramp.
"You are not permitted to pass." a black belt said, crossing his arms. Serena gawked at him.
"Excuse me? I n-need to t-talk to her! Did you s-see what she d-did? She sabotaged Calem!" she felt a hand on her shoulder, and she looked over at Calem.
"It's not that important." he said, grinning his usual teasing grin. "Tyrunt was on a rampage. I was foolish to order a Thrash attack with hope of a one hit KO when I also knew that he would be confused and hurt himself or someone else."
"B-But it's still n-not fair!" Serena said, ignoring her stuttering. "Sh-She sabotaged you! I c-call rematch! Rematch!" Gary stared grimly at the two for a moment.
"I'll go talk to her." he volunteered. The black belt's temple throb.
"Did you not hear me? You are not permi-"he opened his eyes and did a doubletake. "Oh, it's you." he moved to the side. "You may pass."
"You don't have too." Calem said. "I knew I was probably gonna loose from the get go. I mean, Serena is one of the strongest trainers I've yet to beat."
"I don't care. I know Leaf. She probably saw it from a mile away who was gonna win." Gary said. "She's angry about something, though, and I want to know what." with that, Gary continued up the spiral ramp. There was a long pause.
"Serena, Calem," Gurkinn said. "Bonds and trust are something that cannot be given, but earned. You don't really need to go to all the trouble of comparing-every living creature is unique. But still, having someone to compete against and aim for greater heights with is a very fine thing." he smiled slightly as he stared at the two rivals. "While your battle was good, Calem has conceded that he had lost, making you, Serena, the next Mega Evolution Successor."
"B-But it was unfair!"
"No, it wasn't." Calem said sternly this time. "Accept it, Serena." She glanced at him, then finally gave in.
"Fine." she said, though she felt kind of guilty about accepting the reward.
"First, however," Gurkinn said. "I suggest you challenge Korrina, whom is the current successor." Korrina grinned.
"Don't worry, I won't Mega Evolve during out battle. Fairness and all!" she said, skating out of the room.

Gary walked calmly onto the balcony, watching as Leaf let her Pidgeot fly free into the sky. He smirked, seeing as her back was to him with her arms crossed. She slowly crept up on her, then quickly shot his arms out and tickled her sides.
She leapt nearly a foot in the air, letting out a high-pitched, little squeal-slash-laugh. Gary nearly fell down laughing.
"Finally, I got the stoic Leaf Rosalie Green to laugh!" he exclaimed. Leaf turned, glaring at him, then turned away.
"Hmph." she stated, turning away.
"Why did you get so mad at Calem?" Leaf didn't answer. Gary, of course, already knew she was just being stubborn. For the few times she ever gets to see her alone, she always lets down her cold facade.
Somewhat.
Gary walked closer to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and placing his mouth near her ear.
"Why're you angry, Leaf?" he asked, smirking as she stiffened slightly. He slowly slid to the ground, Leaf going with him. They sat down together, the Kanto Champion sitting somewhat stiffly between the gym leaders legs. Slowly, she relaxed, leaning her head back against him, holding his hands that fell loosely in front of her.
"That boy..." she muttered. "Hesitated. Then sent out Tyrunt... when he knew it wasn't battle-ready."
"I see." Gary muttered.
"And then he rashly ordered Thrash... He wasn't ready for Mega Evolution."
"But Serena was?"
"She knew what she was doing. She did not falter. She did not act rashly. She faced her opponent bravely."
"Are you going to battle her?"
"We're close." she said after a pause. "So close..."
"You think so?"
"..." she didn't answer, simply stared up at the clouds. Gary sighed inwardly, glancing up at the sky again.
Every once in a while, he would see the old Leaf. Every once in a while, she would come back to him. But as far as he knew, this only happened around him, and only rarely. How he missed old Leaf. How he hated the bastard who took Serenity, how he hated the cruel, twisted world which had so corrupted his elegant, beautiful, and strong Leaf.
He clenched her hands a little tighter, and she shifted to glance at him. He smiled at her, but she simply turned her gaze back to the sky.
He loved Leaf. He loved her to much for words, but he figured his actions would be enough to express how he felt. He knew that Leaf, Arceus bless her soul, was trying as hard as she could in her distant state to connect with him. Only she spoke to him, whispered things to him when she wanted to be heard, had conversations with him. And only he could read her eyes, which were usually unreadable, untouchable, even.
He could feel the lump of the box in his pocket. It weighed on him like it did everyday, and he knew that the minute they found Serenity, he would ask her. He didn't really feel it in other regions, but like Leaf said, they were close.
He closed his eyes and imagined, for a moment, living back in Pallet with his grandfather, Daisy and her family, Ms. Green, Serenity, even inviting Leafs Uncle Sycamore down every once in a while, with their own child running wild with his or her cousins.
But until then, he wouldn't pull out the ring and ask her to marry him and begin their own family.
