Serena officially hated the maniac who designed the gym.
Don't get her wrong, the terrifying spider web in Viola's gym freaked her out, and the exhausting rock climb to victory in Grant's gym was pointlessly tiring, but Korrina's gym... Korrina's gym was the exact definition of mortifying embarrassment.
She had no talent in rollerskating to begin with, but somehow she was supposed to roller skate circles around other, professional roller skaters, beat them in battle, while on roller skates, and slide across a stupid bar of metal just to get into the Arceus damned gym!
So now she stood in front of the metal bars that raised to her to slide across to get to the battlefield. She stood, gripping the small pillars to avoid sliding out from her own two feet, and stared.
"Screw this!" she exclaimed, preparing to kick off the annoying shoes.
"Oh, no!" exclaimed the gym guy who stood at the front. "Miss, the minute you remove your skates, you will be disqualified from the gym challenge!" Serena stared at him, still struggling to keep her balance.
"Are you kidding me?!" she exclaimed. "What the heck do you people do if you get someone who's in a wheelchair?!"
"Put skates on his or her feet and he or she can push his wheelchair around the course."
"This is moronic!"
"Yes, but it's certainly fun to watch for those who so horribly lack coordination."
"So what am I supposed to do, huh? Shimmy across the bar?!"
"If you so wish." Serena stared at his serious face, smirk pulling at his lips. Slowly, she eased her hands on the bar, and began the tedious task of shimmying across the stupid thing, inwardly cursing the gym guy and contemplating the pros and cons of ordering Briaxen to set the mans pants on fire.
"Meh..." she thought, sighing with relief as she neared the end. "Not worth the lawsuit." she let out a sigh of relief as she eased onto the circular battlefield. She glanced around, looking for Korrina, but then heard the sound of roller skates on metal. She looked off to the side, and saw Korrina leaping off one of the metal trick poles, doing an elaborate spin around the field before stopping and lifting her leg in the air.
"Time for Lady Korrina's big appearance!" she exclaimed. Serena glared. Was she showing off?! Korrina laughed, lowering her leg and skating across from Serena. "I'm just messing around with you! I know, you're rollin' in the aisles, right? I already know you're a strong trainer, so let's get this show on the road! Lets go Mienfoo!" The cute little pokémon popped out, standing in a fighting stance, prepared for battle.
"Kirlia!" she exclaimed, not even bothering to attempt to stand. Kirlia took a cautious glance at her trainer on the ground, and Serena tapped the roller skates, then smiled. Kirlia blinked, then nodded happily, knowing full well that her trainer had little to no talent on the skates. "Calm Mind!"
"Double Slap!" Korrina ordered. Serena mused on this a moment. Immediately going for the offensive? Interesting. Mienfoo bolted forward, smacking one hand across Kirlias face, the second into her forehead, sending her flying back. The small pokémon quickly regained her balance, though, and resumed it's delicate tip-toeing.
"Psychic!" Serena ordered. She wanted out of this crazy gym as quickly as possible. Kirlia's eyes glowed blue for a moment before sending out a wave of powerful psychic energy against the pokémon. Mienfoo cried in pain as the energy slashed into it's fur, panting slightly as it landed. With orders from Korrina, Mienfoo began bringing on flurries of Double Slaps.
Kirlia continued to try to dodge the attacks as gracefully as possible. Serena smiled. Kirlia, though really timid, but was really quite evasive. Serena refused to allow Kirlia to go through the onslaught any longer, so she ordered the next attack.
"Use Psychic!" she ordered. Mienfoo cried out in pain, then fell. Serena grinned. This was easy!
"Hawlucha!" exclaimed Korrina. Serena furrowed her eyebrows. Obviously a fighting type, but she has no idea what this pokèmon was! "Fling!" Hawlucha burst forward, grabbing Kirlia by her ankles, then flung her in a circle.
"Regain you balance! Use Psychic!" Kirlia flipped in midair and blasted the attack at the pokémon. Hawlucha, weaker than Meinfoo, it fell instantly. Kirlia landed, but immediately, Kirlia knew there was something wrong. Kirlia winced, and slowly fell to her knees. Serena widened her eyes as she noticed darkening bruises forming around her ankles. "C-Crap!"
"Machoke!" exclaimed Korrina. "Retaliate!"
"Gah!" Serena exclaimed, recognizing the move. "Kirlia, please, dodge it quickly!" Kirilia let out a huff as she hopped back, avoiding Machokes first fist, but was to quick to dodge the second one. Suddenly, the pain in her ankles took over, causing her to collapse to the ground.
With a roar intent on vengeance, Machoke slammed it's fist into Kirila once again, sending her flying, actually leaving a dent in the wall. "K-Kirlia!" Serena exclaimed as the psychic fairy slumped to the ground.
The trainer ground her teeth together, grabbing two pokéballs, one Kirlias, the other Braxien's. She can finish this quickly with Braxien's psybeam...
Suddenly, another pokémon forcefully popped out of one of the capsules on her belt. Serena blinked, watching as Wartortle took form in front of her. He looked over at her, then over at Kirlia. Serena quickly returned the fairy, and watched as Wartortle glanced at the Machoke, and Serena swore the water type was seeing red. With a roar of anger, he burst forward, performing Rapid Spin and slamming into Machoke.
Serena blinked, then realized that Wartortle was simply prone to protecting his trainer and fellow pokémon. He must've jumped to conclusions when he saw Serena kneeling and Kirlia fainted. He must think that they're being attacked rather than going against a gym leader.
"Wartortle!" exclaimed Serena as Machoke sent him flying back with a second powerful Retaliate. She was beginning to see small cracks forming along his precious shell. "Wartortle! Stop jumping to conclusions! I'm fine!" she shakily got up onto her legs, squirming to gain her balance.
Wartortle refused to listen, still blinded by his rage.
"Arceus..." she ground her teeth together, then kicked her roller skates off, despite the immediate threat of disqualification, and stood in her socked feet. "WARTORTLE!" she practically shrieked. "Pay attention!" Wartortle paused, glancing over his shoulder, then grinned slightly at seeing his trainer standing.
Suddenly, he glowed a brilliant white light, growing larger in size, and with a roar of sheer determination, Wartortle became a mighty Blastoise, standing battle ready. Serena grinned. She was happy that she managed to get in some early morning training!
The Blastoisinite weighed in her pocket, suddenly becoming very noticeable, and she grinned. Now if she could just win this battle and get the Mega Ring...
"Blastoise, lets show her how strong our bond really is!" Serena exclaimed. "Flash Canon!" Blastoise clenched his fists together, then a glowing silverly light began to glow from the pipes on his back. Suddenly, a powerful beam of flashing light burst through the air, slamming into Machoke back as he fainted. "Yes!" Serena exclaimed. "Good job Blastoise!"
"Oh!" Korrina exclaimed. "I have been defeated! Alack, alay! Lady Korrina gave a terrible display!" she sighed sadly. "This is it. I must give up my title and admit that your strength far exceeds-" Serena blinked.
"Seriously?" she asked, raising an eyebrows skeptically. Korrina blinked, then grinned, laughing.
"Just teasing!" she skated up to her. "But here's your Badge." she grinned. "Boy, you'll be rolling in 'em soon!"
"But the gym guy said that if I took off my roller skates..." she wriggled her socked toes for emphasis. Korrina blinked.
"Truthfully," she lowered her voice as she passed the badge to her. "The gym guy is an ass. He says that to everyone, even though it isn't true." Serena's mouth dropped open.
"Then why do you allow him to say those things?! I have no talent in roller skating whatsoever! Do you know how terrifying it was to get to this point with no coordination on roller skates?"
"Sorry..." Korrina trailed off, then quickly changing the subject. "That's your third one, right?"
"Yeah." Korrina glanced up at the Blastoise.
"You got that from Prof. Sycamore, right?"
"Back in Lumiose, a little while after I began my journey." Serena said, smiling.
"I see. You know, I know that bonds are usually built with trust and time. I'm surprised that this guy evolved so fast."
"A lot of my pokémon evolved rather quickly." Serena mused. "Fennekin evolved back in the Glittering Cave, Budew to Roselia in Sycamore's lab, Kirlia in my battle with Grant, and now Wartortle into Blastoise." Serena smiled, returning the giant turtle. Korrina grinned too.
"So you have a Mega Stone, I presume?" she asked. Serena pulled out the two stones from her pocket proudly.
"Two, actually." she stated. "The Blastoisinite and the Gardevoirite."
"Wow, two? Impressive!" Korrina said, studying them. "Mind If I take them and get them set into gear for your pokémon? They'll be like bracelets for your pokémon."
"Like the mega ring?"
"Sure!" Korrina smiled, then frowned slightly. "Look… I do have to apologize. You'll have to make it up to the top of the Tower of Mastery if you want the Mega Ring and your Mega Stones back." Serena gaped for a moment.
"Seriously?" she asked. Korrina smiled sheepishly.
"I'm sorry for sending you this way and that. I swear, I'm not giving you the runaround! You've done great rolling with the punches. So great that I'd like to ask you a favor…" she trailed off and grinned. "Battle me again, won't you? But this time, it won't be just another Gym Battle…" she clenched her fist in front of her determinedly, finally giving Serena good view of where she kept her keystone. Similarly to Fire's glove, her keystone was embedded in the back of her glove. "I'll be waiting for you with Lucario at the top of the Tower of Mastery! I want a battle between equals! As two Trainers who can use Mega Evolution!"

Leaf watched.
She watched from the balcony that lead to her and her comrades room as Serena joyfully burst into the Tower of Mastery, showing off her Rumble Badge on the strap of her Halo Caster. Fire and Dayna praised her on her achievement. Trevor congratulated her while Shauna nearly bounced off the walls with excitement. Tierno gave her a big bear hug and after the dancer dropped her, Calem caught her in a chokehold, teasing her, claiming he made it his set goal on defeating her in an 'epic battle of Mega Evolution awesomeness'.
"Familiar scene, eh?" Gary chuckled behind her. She nodded slightly, remembering when she won the title of Championship close to six years ago. It was almost similar. "With the exception of our little moment that made all my fangirls want to murder you and all your fanboys weep in tears."
Leaf felt her ears heat up as she remembered being so happy, she boldly grabbed Gary by the collar of his shirt and had a tiny little... rather long make out session in front of the whole population of Kanto.
Oh, the death threats.
"My, are you blushing Leafy?" he asked, pulling at her cheek playfully. Leaf glared, slapping his hand away as she continued to pay attention to the five teens. Shauna said something in French, causing Calem to hop at least three feet back from Serena. Serena looked confused, blinking over her shoulder at Calem. Perhaps she didn't understand French?
"Hey," Gary said, draping an arm over her shoulder. "Bet you twenty thousand poké(about a hundred dollars in American money) that by the end of this nice long journey, Serena and Calem will be a couple." Leaf felt her lips twitch into a smirk as she turned to walk down to the ground floor.
"Deal."

Serena, though the trip a dizzying one, was happy to come up to the large wooden doors that lead her to the balcony that overlooked all of Shalour City. At the edge of the balcony was Korrina, her Lucario next to her, hands on her hips as she stared over the city.
"I really love this place!" Korrina exclaimed suddenly. "When I'm here with my Pokémon, looking at the wide-open sky above, all worries disappear, and I feel like I can do anything!"
"I can understand that." Serena smiled, noting that the view was, indeed, gorgeous. Korrina turned around, grinning, then pulling three items from a bag at her hip.
"Thanks for coming all the way up here." she said, passing her Mega Stones back to her. Serena, in response, let out Blastoise and Kirlia, snapping the bangles around their wrists. Blastoise proudly showed off his new accessory while Serena noticed that Kirlia's confidence seemed to increase ten-fold. It was truly amazing.
"They're really happy." Serena said, smiling. "Thank you."
"Of course!" Korrina replied. "I kinda decided that this must be the place where the Mega Ring is handed over. Hope you don't mind! It has something to with making sure we never forget to set our sights as high as the sky." she paused, pondering over that for a moment, before grinning holding up the final item. "And here it is-your very own Mega Ring! It's in the shape of a bracelet, so it's super easy to wear!"
Serena stared at the bracelet for a moment before slipping it onto her wrist with a snap. The black wring hung comfortably around her wrist, the rainbow keystone in the middle shining brilliantly. She now understood why Blastoise and Kirlia were so happy. There was so much power in such a little stone!
"Can you feel it too?" Korrina grinned. "Mega Evolution is an extraordinary ability. You're lucky to acquire it so young without training!" Korrina laughed. "I've had my Lucario since they were just-hatched Riolu. We've trained and trained everyday for preparation of becoming the Successor!" she paused. "Aw, I made myself sound old!" Serena laughed, returning Kirlia.
"So are we going to battle or not? I think Blastoise is itching for a good fight with this new power." Serena challenged determinedly. Korrina grinned.
"Of course! I can sense this will be epic, our bonds with out pokémon are so strong!" she closed her eyes for a moment, both teenage girls feeling the wind shift through their hair. Suddenly, her eyes snapped open, grinning wildly as Lucario leapt forward. "Let's give it our all!"
"Fletchinder squad force A, B, C, and D!" the two trainers froze, both prepared to Mega Evolve as the new voice echoed in the area. "Commence attack!" Thousands upon thousands of Fletchinder's suddenly swarmed around them, trying to get with pecking range of the two trainers. Korrina cursed, knowing she was at a double disadvantage with the fire-flying type, but ordered her Lucario to fight bravely anyways.
"Change of plans, Serena! Lets fight side by side and beat the crap outta these pesky birds!" Korrina exclaimed. Serena stood stock-still, not daring to move, not even when Blastoise began acting without order. "Serena?!"
"Birds..." she thought as a shot of coldness erupted in her veins. "S-So many b-birds! T-They're everywhere-!"
And that they were. It was almost as if they were blocking out the sun itself. She did the simplest thing she could imagine. She ducked down to the ground in a fetal position, hands over her ears to block out their constant squawking, and shrieked at the top of her lungs.

"Shit!" exclaimed Fire as Team Flare grunts poured in through the entrances, sending out multiple pokémon. "Shit! Blastoise, stand by!"
"Mawile!" Dayna exclaimed.
"Send the Fletchinder units up to attack the Successor! We need to acquire a Keystone at all costs!" exclaimed a male voice over a megaphone. "I'll go up and deal with anyone daring to interfere!"
"We're being overwhelmed fast!" Dayna exclaimed. "Arceus how many people are there?!"
"Oh! They're going after Seré!" Shauna exclaimed worriedly as she ordered her Quilladin to attack.
"Crap, and they said Fletchinder too!" Calem exclaimed. "You all remember what happened on route seven when she saw mine, right?!" Leaf snapped her head in his direction, questioning. Just as suddenly, a shriek, shrill, sharp, and filled with terror, cut through the air, causing everyone to completely halt.
"Serena!" Tierno and Shauna exclaimed at the same time.
"Seré's terrified of birds!" Trevor explained quickly. Leaf cast her eyes to the ground as Her Venasaur began battling. She clenched her fists together, then ground her teeth together.
"Everyone!" Gary suddenly ordered, his Charizard unleashing a barrage of fire. "If what Calem says is true, then Serena's fate does not bode well, especially if they seek a Key Stone! She's the weak link right now! We need to send someone up to help her!"
"I'll go!" Calem exclaimed. Leaf placed hand on his shoulder, glaring. "Uh..."
"Leafy wants to go too!" Gary said. "She'll be a huge help!"
"Will you be able to hold up defenses without her?!" Calem exclaimed as Leaf moved to take out her pokéball and return Venusaur. He cast a cautious glance at the multitudes of Team Flare Grunts, still fighting.
"Please, me and Leafy took on a ship full of Team Rocket members and defeated them single-handedly!" Gary exclaimed.
"These weaklings is like back in trainer school!" Fire laughed as Dayna nodded.
"If it's no trouble, I'll fill in." Gurkinn said, appearing from no where with a Lucario. A pin gleamed beautifully on his chest. It took a moment for them to realize it, but it was a Key Stone. "You youngsters aren't the only one who can Mega Evolve!" he turned, the pin glowing as well as the metallic bracelet on Lucario. Both glowed, and suddenly, Lucario stood, taking on a completely different form. Gurkinn glared angrily at the grunts. "No longer will this filth defile the Tower of Mastery!"
