Starfire had shooed all of her male acquaintances out of hers and Ravens room, save for one. The kid sat on the desk, looking small in comparison to Cyborg even as he sat below him in the desk chair. Beast Boy sat on Starfires bed, chatting away at the new guy a mile a minute; something about what it feels like to turn into an octopus.
He had mousy brown hair and giant, watery blue eyes. His round face looked too boyish to belong to a college student, much less a Junior in the Engineering department.
"Er, I'm not sure what Kori has told you-"
"Just the part about not being alone in his powerfulness, that we are the Teen Titans, and we want him to know he is safe with us," Starfire said promptly, like she was reciting an answer in class.
"Right," Robin scratched the back of his head. "Um, good start, Kor."
"Do you want to go get pizza or something…?"
"Andrew." The kid said, looking at Robins outstretched hand warily. "And look, this whole thing is freaking me out, I've only got like a thousand questions…"
"We won't know much," Cyborg said, shoveling slice by slice into his mouth. He'd taken off his ring, as a bit of proof to Andrew that they were who they said they were, and his metal components were shinning in the sunlight. "Until we get you back to our HQ. We can run some tests there- non-invasive tests," He added, seeing Andrews face. "To see what's going on. The radioactivity may be a danger to you in the long run, in which case we would neutralize it before it went to far."
"Are you like Spiderman?" Beast Boy asked with his usual tact. "He was radioactive, and we could get you a sick costume like-"
"That was a spider, dude," Cyborg smacked him. "This was a nuclear spill. Totally different chemical compositions."
"Oh, obviously," Raven said, rolling her eyes. The kid hadn't said two words since they'd walked to the nearest pizza place; these clowns were over stimulating him.
"Look, all we want to do is help." Robin stepped in, sensing this from Raven. "Make sure you know who we are, and that we've got your back."
"We also must tell you there are spies at your school." Starfire added. Robin nodded.
"Looking for kids like you. If anyone else approaches you about this, tell us right away." He said. Andrew nodded. For a moment, the Titans watched him as he processed.
"You're telling me I'm going to be like this, like, forever?"
"As long as you're not in any danger, I don't see why not." Cyborg said.
They waited again- Raven was sure he was going to run. She decided it was time to say something.
"Andrew." He looked at her, surprised, as if he hadn't known she could speak.
"We're going to help you. Whether or not you can control them isn't a problem now, because we can teach you that. I can teach you that. These powers don't have to rule your life- you can live with them."
Andrews worried face broke into a relieved smile.
Andrew took in the Titan Tower similar to the way he had after completing the construction of his Lego Death Star model at ten years old. He regarded it with awe, having known of its existence but never dreaming the experience of being inside of it.
"It's huge!" He kept saying, unable to get past its size. Clearly he hadn't spent much time in the thick skyscrapers of Jump. "Dude, are you studying architecture?"
Cyborg raised an eyebrow.
"I mean, its totally modernism at its best. You didn't embellish a thing."
His design for the tower had been, Cyborg thought, one conceived of function and comfort. Having never attended a college architecture class, he hadn't known there was a name for it.
"Uh… Thanks dude. So, that's the living room and the kitchen, and if you go up one more floor there's the workout rooms and the obstacle courses."
"Can I do an obstacle course?"
"No," Robin intervened. The tour was starting to drag on, and they had work to do. "Look, let's go show you the lab, and see if we can get some of those tests out of the way."
"Basically, we need to get a handle on the kinds of things you can do, how they work, and more importantly, how you can control them. I know you may feel like you know what you're doing, but trust me, radioactive powers can be-"
"I have no idea what I'm doing," Andrew interrupted Cyborg. "I literally have no clue. I only knew something was going on when I melted a model I was building."
"That's okay," Cyborg said reassuringly, leading the way to the elevator. "Things like that are going to happen, it's no big deal."
"Sure, you try explaining why you suddenly have a smoking pile of solid steel in the middle of the engineering shop."
It was silent as the steel doors of the elevator closed around them. Raven gently touched the elevator cables with her mind, preparing to snatch them up in a net of dark matter.
"Oh, no," Andrew said quickly, "it doesn't just happen like that." He snapped his fingers, making Beast Boy jump.
"How does it happen?" Raven said quietly, through her focus.
"I was really frustrated with that model. I'm kind of easily frustrated. And then it was burning a hole through the table."
"That's good to know," Cyborg said as they stepped out of the elevator. The lights in the lab flickered on at their approach, glinting off of the chrome and sterilized white.
"Uh," Andrew stopped walking as the Titans entered the room.
"It's alright man," Beast Boy chirped, clapping him hard on the shoulder as he passed. "Cyborg's only sort of an evil scientist."
"This isn't the part where I realize I've been lured to your lair to be dissected into tiny pieces, right?"
"No, but we will need some samples of your internal organs," Beast Boy kept joking, but Raven turned around when she felt a lance of fear from behind her.
"Up here, man." Beast Boy patted the platform of the full body scanner, which lit up like a beacon. Andrew shielded his eyes.
"Hm, the button is around here somewhere…" Beast Boy located a bright green button and smashed it with his palm.
A completely different machine leapt to life next to Andrew, spewing sparks and emitting a loud screaming sound. Cyborg spun around.
"Turn it off!" He shouted, lunging for the button. Beast Boy knocked Andrew to the ground as he jumped out of the way. The machine began to vibrate violently, shooting more large sparks at Cyborg. Starfire rose into the air, eyes glowing.
"NO!" Cyborg shouted. "That machine costs more than this entire tower!"
Robin watched the scene with an eyebrow raised. "You gonna do anything?" He said to Raven, standing beside him.
Raven sighed. "Where would you all be without me?" She raised her arms and allowed her dark matter to slither along them. Her power encased the machine, and she closed her arms tight with a grunt of effort, her magic holding the flames and the machine at bay. This allowed Cyborg to make it close enough to turn it off.
"You idiot," He panted, leaning up against the machine. "This thing needs at least three hours to warm up, and that's if every light in the entire tower is off-"
"Alright man, I get it, why the hell is the button all the way over here then?"
"It's a circuitry thing okay?! Jesus!"
"Whatever," Beast Boy grinned toothily. "At least we didn't stick Andrew in there."
He turned to face Andrew, and the smile dropped off of his face. Andrew was on the ground, looking at him and Cyborg as they shouted with a look of horror on his face. All at once, the Titans noticed that the temperature in the room had noticeably spiked.
"Guys," He panted, "guys, I don't know if I can stop it."
Cyborg realized what was happening and used his most commanding tone, raising himself to his full height. "Well you have to stop it, man. Focus."
Andrew looked up at him in panic. Raven knew what had to be done, but couldn't do it without help.
Robin, whatever it is, it's connected to his emotions. He's freaking out.
"Andrew," Robin turned on the charm instantly, flashing the dangerous crooked smile that had the entire Greenly campus aware of the time a day their schedules coincided. It was instantly calming- Raven felt her own nerves smooth out even as sweat rolled off of her brow and a strange orange halo formed around Andrews hands.
"Andrew. You can do this. We're all here to help you," He knelt so that he was eye level with Andrew.
"No, you should get out." He gasped, looking at his hands as their glow grew stronger.
"I'm not going anywhere man, and neither are they." Robins calm was in such high contrast to Andrews desperation that Andrew latched onto it in his mind, focusing as hard as he could on the fact that, though they were all on the brink of being incinerated, the Boy Wonder did not seem afraid.
Raven listened intently to the emotions swirling in the room, carefully sorting out the tense, adrenaline fueled focus that belonged to her leader and teammates from the real, true fear. This belonged to Andrew, and she grasped this thread with her mind, pulling herself out of her own head and along the strand like a spider, creeping into his mind while he was focused on Robin.
Robin. Inside Andrews head, he was a life-line, and Raven finally felt the full force of his fear. Andrew/Raven did not want to hurt anyone. They wanted so desperately to stop, but didn't know how. They felt the heat in their hands but also in their chest, a deep, frothy boil of raw power. And they felt it rising. If they focused hard on Robins face, Robins smile, Robins faith that they could do this, they might be able to stop it. He could save them.
Pay attention! Raven scolded herself. She had let herself get wrapped up in his emotions. She steeled herself and found the place in her own mind where she went to meditate. Slowly, she began to chant her mantra. It echoed in their shared headspace, and as Raven began to calm down, so did Andrew. She felt their chest cool, their body relax. Only when the humming in their hands returned to a slight tingle did she step gently out of his mind and back into her body.
Robin watched as the light died from Andrews hands and he slumped to the ground, exhausted. Relieved, he stood and offered Andrew a hand, which he took gratefully.
"Thank you," he panted, eyes wide. "Holy sit, I thought I was going to lose it. Thank you."
"I told you," Robin said, locking eyes with Cyborg and silently agreeing to pull the volcanic exploration suits out from storage. "We're here for you. We're not letting anything bad happen to you. Cy, how about we take care of those tests?"
Cyborg nodded and grinned at Andrew. "I promise, no more surprises, okay?"
"Sounds good."
Robin looked over at Raven, who was leaning heavily against the wall.
"Are you alright?" She nodded. He crossed over to her and put a hand on her shoulder, turning so that the others couldn't hear. She shook a little under his hand, but she lifted herself off of the wall to speak with him.
"What did you see in there?"
"Well, it was kind of like being inside a microwave..."
"Anything we need to worry about?"
Raven shook her head. "He's a good kid, Robin. He doesn't want to hurt anyone. But… I don't know." She bit her lip, looking like she didn't want to say what she knew she had to.
"Earth to Raven."
"We- I mean, he was so unstable in there." She lowered her voice even more. "If it weren't for you, I think we would have been in some real trouble. It's a miracle his dorm is still standing."
"Do you think we can safely let him go off by himself?"
"No."
Robin set his jaw, looking over to where Andrew sat on a table with wires connected to his fingertips.
"Looks like I have a new roommate, then."
