"Now remember boys, behave tonight and use your manners," Treville said, pulling up behind the rows of cars on the street.
"We promise," Aramis said with a grin, looking at Athos and d'Artagnan.
Treville just smiled and got out of the car. Today was his family Christmas and this would be the first time his whole family would meet his adoptive sons. He was so excited to finally have his adoptive sons actually be part of his family. He had called his mom and dad, telling them everything they've been doing and how proud he was of how far they're getting.
"Hey Mr. Treville, are there other kids here?" Athos asked.
"Yes there is."
"Food?" d'Artagnan asked, jumping out of the car.
"Yes and you are not going to be eating all day either," Treville said. He opened the trunk and handed each boy a present. "Now, we're going to meet my mom and dad first so they can finally meet you."
"They know about us?" Porthos asked.
"Of course they do." Treville knew this would be hard on all of them, this being their first year without being with their own families, and wanted this to be special. He wanted his family to open their arms to these boys and treat them like one of their own. They reached the door and Aramis rang the doorbell before slapping Athos upside the head.
"What was that for?" Athos asked, rubbing his head.
"Because I can't do it with all the adults watching so I have to get it out of my system," Aramis said without missing a beat. His head suddenly jolted forward by a slap to the back of his head. He turned and glared at a grinning Porthos. "What was that for?"
"Because I felt like it."
"Jean, oh my baby boy!" Mrs. Treville said as she opened the front door. She started kissing and pinching her sons face, calling him her little baby and how much she missed him.
"Mom, you're embarrassing me," Treville said, not pushing her away but giving her a hug.
"I'm your mother, I'm suppose to embarrass you," she said. She heard laughter and turned her attention to four boys covering their mouths as they laughed. "Oh my, Jean, they are so much like you said they are. Now, don't tell me who you are because I want to guess." She had them stand in a line and looked them over. She walked up to Porthos and smiled. "You must be Porthos. Jean said you were a very tall teenager and yes you do look like you will watch over my adoptive grandchildren."
Porthos almost choked when she hugged him. He couldn't remember the last time a woman hugged him out of love. Without realizing it he hugged her back, maybe harder than she was and he must have been crying because she pulled him back and wiped his tears.
"I do hope these are tears of happiness and not sadness. This is the time we remember those who are not with us and a time to be with those that care about us." She smiled when Porthos nodded and smiled. She then looked down at Aramis and laughed. "Oh you must be Aramis. You look like a charmer and I'm sure all the girls are all over you at school."
"I'm going to be a doctor when I grow up too," Aramis said, giving her a hug.
"Well, it's about time someone in this family became a doctor because Lord knows we need someone to patch up all these kids running around." She then looked at Athos. "You must be Athos. For a young man you look as though you will someday be a great leader."
"I'm the best at Following The Leader."
"And being the leader is a great responsibility. Yes, you will fit right in." She then knelt down in front of d'Artagnan and before she could say anything he lunged at her and wrapped his arms around her neck. "Oh d'Artagnan, it's so good to finally meet you."
"I'm going to be Batman when I grow up!"
Mrs. Treville just laughed and hugged him once more. "Oh my child, you will be the best Batman ever." She stood up and smiled at her son. "Jean, you did good."
"Thank you mom. Why don't we go in and meet the rest of the family." As his mom went inside he turned his boys as they bust out laughing once more. "Something funny?"
"You're name's Jean," d'Artagnan giggled.
"Get inside you rugrats."
The boys ran inside with a laugh and looked at all the Christmas decorations. There was a hug tree near the back of the family room, with presents under it. Santa, Frosty, and Rudolph were all over the house. They passed the stairs, which lead up to the second floor where yells could be heard.
"You can put those under the tree," Mr. Treville said, walking over to them. "You must be Jean's adoptive boys." He smiled when the youngest laughed. "Yes, Jean is a funny name."
"Are you his dad?" Aramis asked.
"I am. You must be Aramis, Porthos, Athos, and d'Artagnan."
"Do you have any Batman toys?" d'Artagnan asked, setting his present down.
"I think we do downstairs."
d'Artagnan's face lit up and grabbed Athos's hand before dragging him towards the basement.
"Well, we won't see him for four hours," Porthos said with a smile.
Treville smiled as Aramis and Porthos sat with his dad and talked and he saw d'Artagnan dragging Athos down to the basement. So far everything seemed to be going good, just like he hoped. He walked into the dinning room and waved at some of his cousins and sat down at the table.
"So Jean, it's been a long time since we've seen you," Lucas said, handing him a drink. "Police life treating you good?"
"Yes it is. Keeping me busy too. Now that the kids are on Christmas break there's been a lot of board kids destroying property."
"I hear that's not all that's keeping you busy."
"I see my mom told the rest of the family of my new family."
"Yes she did. Sounded mighty proud too, but something just doesn't seem fair."
"What would that be?"
"You are a very busy man, keeping criminals behind bars, going in early and staying late with all that paper work, so I'm sure it's hard on the boys when you're away for hours at a time."
Treville could see where this was going. "I can assure you my work does not interfere with my time with the boys."
"That I'm sure of, but Jean, those boys need a mother in their life. I mean, from what I've read in the papers on them, they've lived tough lives and they need two parents to keep them in line."
"I think I'm capable of taking care of four boys."
"Come on Jean, you've done your job. You got them out of a hard life, so don't you think you deserve relaxation without having to come homework and to homework, dinner, bath time, and bed time. You can go out on dates, go to a late night movie, hell go to a bar and enjoy a night. You shouldn't have to be tied down to four boys who need a lot of attention."
Treville was now seeing red. No one disrespected his boys. "Now listen here Lucas. Yes, those boys have had a hard life and yes they do need a family with both parents, but they had tried that. I tried to give them a better life, a second chance and guess what happened? They got sent back. These families just walked into the orphanage with the notion that if they adopt a child they will get money so that's what they did. They took these boys into their homes without so much of a thought about them and never tried to help. They never gave Porthos the reassurance that if you get a C on a History paper it's okay and he wouldn't have to hid in his room because he's afraid he's going to beat. They never took the time to tell their own child not to hold a fake gun to d'Artagnan because he had witnessed his parents' death and it would cause a panic attack. Yes, I never gave Aramis or Athos the chance to get adopted but after everything with Porthos and d'Artagnan, I'm glade I didn't."
"All I'm saying Jean is that…"
"No. You're saying I should just give up on everything I've done to help these boys have a nice life and send them off to someone who just wants money for taking them in. That's not going to happen. I love these boys like they were my own and I'm sure Maria would have loved them too and if she were here she would be telling you the same thing." Treville got up from the table to find his sons. Dinner was going to served soon and he had to make sure Aramis hadn't wrapped anyone up like a mummy like he did to Athos. Unknown to him, two boys have over heard the entire conversation.
"Dinner time," Mrs. Treville said, walking into the rooms. "Come on boys, time to eat." She walked down the stairs and laughed when she saw d'Artagnan running around the basement with a towel wrapped around his neck like a cape.
"Sorry mom but I couldn't help it," Howard laughed.
"You do realize he's going to go home and do this?" Athos asked, though he was grinning like crazy. "Come on Batman. Time to eat." He started up the stairs, listening as d'Artagnan stomped up after him. As he cleared the doorway, he was grabbed by the arm by Aramis and was forced to follow his brother. He saw Porthos do the same with d'Artagnan and they took them into a small room where the coats were and closed the door.
Treville sat on the couch, plate of food on his lap, and laughed as his older brother told the boys about the time he broke his leg because he jumped out the window thinking he could fly like Birdman.
"And you didn't get a spanking?" d'Artagnan asked with a mouth full of food.
"d'Artagnan, we don't talk with our mouth full."
"Mom didn't have to spank me because she said me breaking my leg was punishment enough," Howard said. "I can still remember the pain when the bone snapped."
"At lest you can now tell when it's going to rain," Aramis said.
Howard laughed and looked at his brother. "Jean, he really is going to be a doctor when he grows up."
"He's already patched Porthos up," Athos said with a grin.
"Oh?"
"Yeah. Patched up like a mummy," Porthos mumbled. "Word of warning, never fall asleep around these little monsters."
"Okay everyone, it's time for the presents," Mr. Treville said, gathering everyone in the family room. He got down and started calling out names and handing out presents. He smiled when he handed Aramis, Athos, Porthos, and d'Artagnan each a present and just watched as everyone opened the presents.
"Oh cool. Batman!" d'Artagnan said, showing his brothers his new toy.
"Nice. A book on all diseases in the United States," Aramis said with awe.
"Oh, now I can finally practice my fencing moves," Athos said, holding up a book.
"I'm so going to be popular in my group," Porthos said, holding up Call of Duty.
Mrs. Treville walked in with a smile; glade to see Christmas was success. "Alright, I think we got everyone."
Porthos got up from his spot on the couch and looked around the room. "Actually, there is one more present."
Treville looked at Porthos in confusion. He swore they had all the presents in the car.
"Yeah. There's one more present," Aramis said, pulling a square wrapped present from behind his back. He handed it to Treville and smiled. "This is from us."
"I helped with the wrapping," d'Artagnan said, feeling proud of himself.
"And a wonderful job," Mr. Treville said. He noticed his son just staring at the present in hand. "Well Jean. Open it. We want to see what you got."
Treville nodded and opened the present with care. How did these boys get him something without him knowing. He opened the box and pulled out a coffee mug that read #1 Dad. He just stared at the mug, tears forming in his eyes.
"You like it?" Athos asked.
"I love it," he said, clearing his throat.
"You're our dad now," Porthos said.
Treville looked up as his four boys hugged him and he could only do one thing and that was hug back. Their small little family was now fully complete.
