Authors note: So this is just a quick little mini-chapter to clear some things up. You guys very astutely picked up on some things in the last few chapters that didn't add up and hopefully this explains why!
I'd also like to say, in terms of the medicine here, I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in any way but I have undertaken a 5 week research block in nephrology and renal transplantation as part of my studies and this story is (extremely loosely) based on a few real patient cases. As in, their treatment and complications and outcomes. I have obviously added a few things in that are a bit of a stretch of the medical imagination to make things a little more dramatic but hey, whats a good story without a few embellishments ;)
Chapter 25 – Just Nonsense
"Alice?" A voice called. "Alice, come on wake up now."
"She'll be fine, she'll be fine! Just being over dramatic." Said a different voice.
I opened my eyes to see blue sky and shivered as ice cold air wrapped around me. I could hear movement, hurried voices and…was that a baby crying?
"Hey babe," Jasper said. He was kneeling down on the ground beside me without a coat on, which I soon realised was draped over me. Why was I on the ground? Wasn't I just at the hospital?
"What's going on?" I asked as the world properly came into focus and I realised I was still in the meadow with my family, not at the hospital.
"You fainted Ally," Jasper said sheepishly. "You helped Bella with the baby then I suggested maybe having one of our own and you…well you collapsed…I probably shouldn't have said anything." His voice trailed off toward the end and averted his gaze.
"Alice, you good?" Emmett said peering down at me. "We need to get Bella and the baby inside and probably to a hospital now that I think about it."
"Yeah I'm fine," I huffed as I pushed myself up to sitting, my head spinning as I did so. "I'm sorry I'm not sure what happened there." I reached my hand up and Emmett pulled me to feet, which I was determined would stay planted firmly on the ground despite my head spinning.
I can't believe you did that Alice. What a drama queen.
"Cool, lets head back." Emmett said as he walked off toward the cluster of my family.
"Come here," Jasper said pulling me in for a tight hug. "You still look pale."
"I had the weirdest dream but it felt so real," I confessed. The details were so clear, I swear I could still hear the doctors voice ringing in my ears that he was getting a transplant and then he wasn't…and then Rosalie told me something, something horrible.
"Oh really?" Jasper asked. "What was it about?"
I stayed silent for a while staring down at my feet and focusing on moving one in front of the other to get back to the house without tripping over a tree root. I shivered at another gust of wind, or maybe at the memory of my dream, either way I leaned closed into Jasper who was once again donning his coat.
"I got called that there was a transplant for you but when we got the hospital the donor had died and you didn't get it." I finally spat out.
"Oh," He said. "That can't have been very nice." He took a breath to say something as if he was going to ask a question but he stayed silent.
"What is it?" I probed.
"Well I don't want to sound stupid because I should probably know this but…could that really happen? Getting a match but then not getting the transplant?" he asked.
I felt like my brain switched to doctor mode as I tried to think of the best way to word this so it would make since and also not scare the shit out of him. With an impromptu birth I think we'd had enough shit scared out of us for one picnic. "Well its best if the organs are taken out before the donor's heart stops, most of the time if the donor dies the kidneys are still healthy but sometimes if the donor goes into cardiac arrest the kidneys get damaged and they don't know that's the case until they go in for them. Sometimes you can't be sure if it was the cardiac death that damaged them at all, sometimes the kidneys are damaged all along and its just not picked up. Its rare, but yes it could happen."
I looked up at gauge his reaction, his eye brows were furrowed in concentration as he absorbed the information I had just given him. I tugged on his arm and he looked down into my eyes, "It won't happen to you." I said as confidently as I could. "If you get that call, you're getting a new kidney."
He smiled at me, that beautiful warm smile that light up my heart. I pushed my stupid fainty dream out of my head, that wasn't going to happen. Actually thinking about it now a lot of things in that dream didn't make sense at all. And if some of it didn't make sense that means it's all just nonsense.
"It's going to be Christmas soon." He said.
"Yeah, I guess it is."
So yes, the last chapter (and a little bit at the end of the chapter before that) were a vision/dream/alice's brain going wacky! Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for the reviews guys! (Thanks Brazos, your thoughtful suggestions are always welcome and in fact a little christmas story sounds like a good idea, I'm on it! So stay tuned ;)
