Jay drove along the road, moving with the pace of traffic that was starting to become denser as time went on. He was trying to get back to the district as soon as he could; Voight called and told him that his stint undercover was done because it was getting too risky. Jay's phone buzzed in the cup holder besides him.
"Voight, what's up?" Jay said, stopping at the red light.
"Halstead, they took the kid out. 4 bullets to the chest. He died in Lindsay's arms in front of the garage. Be aware of your surroundings. The kid told us that you were the next hit. I want you to get somewhere safe as soon as possible. Just until we can get some uniforms around you." Voight said, g
"Okay, I'm actually a block away from Chicago Med. These guys aren't stupid enough to go shooting inside a hospital. I'll wait out here."
"Alright. Lindsay and I are on the—" Voight was cut off by the sound of three loud pops he heard through the receiver.
"Halstead!" Voight shouted into the phone.
Lindsay stood up from her desk, "Hank, what's going on?"
Voight hung up the phone and radioed in what he heard. "An officer in street clothes was just shot outside of Chicago Med. Requesting uniforms to the scene immediately. Erin, let's go."
"29 year old male shot once in the chest outside the hospital. No exit wound. Decreased breath sounds on the right side. Possible hemopneumothorax. Multiple fractures of the ribs likely. He's a detective who's been undercover for a while now do your best work. Jay Halstead, Will's brother.." Brett told Dr. Rhodes.
"I always do. Someone page Will Halstead down here!" Rhodes said, knowing that if it were his brother he would want someone to do the same.
"Hey Doc, tell Erin I'm sorry. I shouldn't have left." Jay said, panting.
"You'll tell her when she gets here. Hang in there, Jay." Rhodes said.
"Voight, it's been hours and nobody has been out to talk to us since we got here. Where the hell is Will? And the people at the service desk are absolutely useless!" Erin said, her voice rising as she spoke, so the workers could hear her.
"Erin," Voight said, giving her a stern look, "I'm sure we'll here something soon."
"You said that a half hour ago," Erin said jumping from her seat and pacing, "what's happening with the case?"
"The rest of the guys are passing the information onto the gang unit, and they're on the way here when they're done. We'll work with them and finish what Halstead started, but you're not going anywhere near this case. Your head isn't clear. I can't risk another member of this family ending up in the hospital." Voight said.
Before Erin could protest she caught sight of Will and Dr. Rhodes coming towards her and Hank. She took a deep breath and felt lightheaded as she waited to hear what the two doctors had to say.
"Erin…Sergeant," Rhodes said.
"Dr. Rhodes how is he?" Voight said, standing up.
"He's stable. We made the repairs to his lung and his chest wall caused by the bullet. He has three broken ribs, so he's going to have to be careful and he's going to be in some pain. He's unconscious in the ICU right now, but you can go up and see him, one at a time." Rhodes said.
"Thank you," Erin said as she tried to fight back tears of joy.
"I'll walk you up there, Erin," Will said, giving her a small smile.
Erin looked at Voight who gave her a nod and a push towards the door of the waiting room. "I'll wait for the rest of the unit down here."
"So how long do you think he'll be unconscious for?" Erin asked Will. She was sitting next to Jay's bed, her hand in his.
"Eh, it's hard to say. Some people are out for days. Others are up quicker than you think. Jay can't sit still for more than 5 minutes, I'm sure he'll be conscious and driving us crazy soon," Will said, trying to lighten the mood, before his tone turned serious again.
"You know, when we were younger, Jay was always different. Our dad had an idea of what we were supposed to be like, and I respected that. I wanted to make him proud. Jay on the other hand-he was blazing his own trail since he was a kid. Dad wanted us to play football; Jay played ice hockey and baseball. Dad wanted us to go on to big schools and become doctors; Jay went to the military out of high school and became a detective. Jay is like our mom. She was a fighter. She was everyone's rock. Jay was her boy. And when she died Jay lost that support, and our family was torn apart. He took her death the hardest, and I wasn't there for him like I should've been. I'll always regret that." Will said, looking down at his brother.
"You're a good brother, Will. He forgave you for that. If there's one thing I know about Jay, is that he's loyal to the ones he loves." Erin said.
Will nodded and stood up from his seat next to Jay's bedside. "I'll give you some space. I'll stop in later tonight."
Erin nodded and looked up at Jay. "Now I know how you felt waiting for me to wake up after my accident. We have to stop doing this it's getting ridiculous." Erin said, laughing quietly to herself.
She looked at the TV that was playing the local news, and leaned forward to rest her head on the bed. It wasn't until her head hit the mattress that she realized how tired she really was. She fought sleep for a while, and then gave in, falling asleep to the sounds of the TV and the quiet breathing of her boyfriend.
"Erin," Jay said, his voice low. He gently squeezed her hand and called out to her again, "Erin, wake up."
Erin's head shot up from the bed, "Jay!"
"Hey, baby," Jay said quietly giving her a small smile.
"Are you okay? Do you want me to get Will?" Erin asked, panic washing over her face.
"They already all came in here. I was going to wake you, but you looked so peaceful I didn't have the heart to do it," Jay said, chuckling to himself.
"If you weren't recovering from a gunshot wound, I would punch you right now." Erin said, smiling widely.
"No you wouldn't. You love me, Erin Lindsay." Jay said.
"That I do," Erin said, climbing up next to Jay and pressing her lips gently to his.
If you're still reading this story, I give you a lot of credit. I've been awful with updates. And this chapter isn't that great either, I know. I plan on writing one more chapter for this story, and I'm planning on uploading an AU sequel set a few years into the future. Let me know if you all would be interesting in reading that.
