CHAPTER 9
The two glass doors swung open to Lex's main office as the man himself entered the room followed by a very observant Adam.
Adam took a moment to look round the huge room which was surrounded by artifacts that seemed to priceless from different times of Earths history.
"This place is fascinating" Adam said as his tone was barely under a whisper.
Lex let out a whisk of a smile as the normal routine for people entering his office were a mixture of accusations and business opportunities. But to have someone just enter the room with no ulterior motive was refreshing.
"Yes it is…But it was Albert Einstein who said the search for truth is more precious than its possession" Lex concluded as he past Adam a small glass in which Adam excepted cautiously making sure his strength did not agree with the glass.
Lex in turn had is own glass as Adam watched as he brought out a larger container which Adam's limited knowledge could describe as a smooth dark brown liquid.
"This is Macallan Scotch 1926 one of the rarest and most purest whisky ever made" As he slowly purred the dark liquid into his glass and then into his own.
Lex returned the container back onto the counter and in turn raised a glass.
"A toast…" he then began waiting for the Adam to reciprocate.
And the Kryptonian was relieved and fortunate to understand this as in his spare time Adam had explored the wonderful dimension known has television and learned some interesting things through that in which he had skipped across a program called "The Wedding Channel" which he watched with Chloe one time and noticed females tend to like watching those types of things and in watching it learned about making a toast.
Realizing his mind had temporally wondered he also raised his glass as Lex concluded.
"…to friendship" Lex spoke with sincerity and hope. In turn Adam responded in the same tone.
"To friendship" the two men clinked the two glasses together as Lex only drank half the contents of the glass feeling the burn at the back of his neck trying not to let it show.
Adam on the other hand thought nothing of it as he was kind of thirsty and downed the full glass of whisky in one.
Lex was waiting for Adam to cough or show signs of discomfort but Adam mealy stood there waiting for the conversation to continue.
"I see you have some back-bone in you Adam its always good when you don't let people see your weaknesses" Lex said as he took the glasses and offered him a seat as he took his main office chair opposite.
"So how are you adapting with life in Smallville?" Lex asked sitting back comfortably in his chair.
Adam thought for a moment as he didn't want to give to much away even though he didn't want to think he didn't trust Lex.
"Its been difficult…" Adam said breathlessly.
"I see…living in the Kent home not it's cracked up to be" he said interlinking his fingers waiting for a response.
"Sometimes…Clark can be controlling…" Adam said knowing he shouldn't say that but he couldn't help letting out his frustration.
"Adam the thing that you need to be aware about Clark Kent is…he doesn't like change" Lex spoke as he pored another of scotch for his guest and himself.
"What do you mean?" Adam questioned as Lex sat back down.
"Well you tell me Adam…You have been with the Kents now for a month…"
Lex looked at him square in the eye.
"Do you think Clark Kent trusts you?"
Adam thought for a moment and Lex immediately interrupted his train of thinking.
"See right there tells me your answer…"
"How?" Adam said confused how Lex could think that without him speaking.
"Trust is automatic Adam…you had to think about which must mean you have your doubts"
"I don't know Lex, Clark has done a lot for me since I arrived here"
"I have no doubt he has but there comes a time were you need to embrace your own path and not follow another"
Adam felt so much meaning and understanding in that sentence as that was what he felt the issue was Clark wanted him to follow things the way he did and not let Adam have a say in the matter.
"I must choose my own destiny" Adam whispered out but Lex cunning ear heard his rasp statement.
"Exactly Adam…you are the only one who can no-one can control what you will become"
Adam smiled feeling a weight leave him.
"Why is it that Clark doesn't trust you know more Lex"
Lex stood up and stared at the view of metropolis and remained quiet for a moment.
"Clark and I…lets say are paths were never the same…" he realized that Adam had joined him at the window looking in a similar tone.
"…and because of that Clark couldn't except the fact that I couldn't follow his example"
Adam looked to him as he replied.
"So…Clark tried to change you?"
"In away…but what makes us and defines us can never be altered…we are who we are"
Lex's words dug deep into Adam's core and brimmed through his mind as he formulated a response.
"So…do you think Clark is trying to do the same with me"
Lex now turned to face him and sighed slightly.
"Im not sure Adam…but all I know is that you are the only one who can make that choice" he concluded putting a reassuring hand on Adam's shoulder.
Adam smiled and nodded.
"I think im going to take a walk and think things through…" Adam said as he began to make his departure.
"Adam…" Lex called to him as Adam turned around as he concluded.
"…my door is always open iff you ever need to talk"
"Thank you Lex you are a good friend"
Adam nodded his goodbye and walked out of the office.
Lex pored himself another scotch and sat back down as he felt a sensation that he hadn't felt since 4 years ago. He felt he had found a friend again.
But as that sensation entered his mind it slowly faded as he pressed a button on his phone on the glass table.
"Yes Mr. Luthor" his secretary answered immediately.
"Miss Knight…I would like to pull the video logs off my office in the past five minutes and get video reconigtion software and direct it to my guest who was with me"
"What would you like to us to find out about this gentlemen sir?"
"….Everything" Lex immediately responded,
Lex sat back as his own words did make perfect sense.
What makes us and defines us can never be altered…we are who we are.
