Title: Forgetting to Remember

Pairing: Eventual Kaname/ Zero

Genre: Romance /General

Rating: T

Disclaimer: I do not own Vampire Knight

Summary: No one knew how it happened, but Zero lying down in a pool of blood was a scene they weren't prepared for, nor were they expecting the next thing that came from the ex-human hunter.

A/N: I've been rereading my stuff over the past months, (smiling at nostalgia for some works, and facepalming at obvious grammar fail in some), and came across this particular fanfic. I've tried racking my brains to remember how it went, sadly I still came up short, but it made me more curious how this story would play out, hence I decided to rewrite it again, just for old time's sake.

Updates will vary, but i WILL try to finish it, this time around.

Warning: STILL probable grammar errors, OOC-ness especially in Zero's part, others to come later.

He was falling….tumbling down into a vast sea of nothingness…

Why is he falling? He didn't know… but right now he couldn't find it in him to care…

He felt peaceful...blissfully unaware of anything around him.

The darkness surrounded him.

Ah, he could finally have that rest he always wanted.

Yuki Cross was just finishing her guardian duties when she heard the high pitched scream, making her sprint towards the Sun dorms at once. When she arrived a lot of the students were outside and there was a definite wind of chaos going about.

Some of the girls were crying, the boys looked...shocked. Yuki was just about to push through the crowd of people to investigate what was going on when she felt herself suddenly yanked back by her friend Yori.

"Yori-chan! What's going on? Why are these people outside? why-?" she immediately began to ask, but stopped mid-sentence when she noticed how her friend looked. Yori was pale, she was trembling too like she was shaken by what she saw.

"I...I don't think you should take a look...Yuki-chan…" her roommate whispered, her voice quivering.

Yuki stared confused "What do you mean Yori-chan? What's-?"

But before the girl could answer they overheard one of the girls nearby, whispering to her friend in a scared voice. "T-There was so much blood…"

Of course the sentence alarmed the brown haired guardian "Blood? Why is there blood?!" she gasped, suddenly frantic "Oh my god, everyone should get inside their rooms quick!"

Now Yori was the one who stared at her confused "Yuki-chan…what...?"

"No time to explain" Yuki told her apologetically "Yori-chan, could you help me ask the others to go back in?" she looked around, hoping to find that mop of silver hair that she was knew was more than capable of handling situations like this. "Mou, where is Zero? He should be here helping me!"

"Yuki, Zero-kun is…" But the brunette was too busy to hear her friend whisper.

"Please Yori-chan! Thanks much!" and with that Yuki was dashing off towards where the students seemed to be gathering.

"Ah! Wait! Yuki!" but Yori was too late in stopping her. She bit her lip and tried to steady herself, she already knew what was waiting for her friend.

"Hey, break it up! Don't push me! I'm a prefect! Clear the way, what is going on here!?" Yuki shouted as loud as she could over the murmurs of the students, hoping to catch their attention. And contrary to what was usual, they all heard and stared at her, making her feel slightly nervous. "W-What? What's with those looks?"

"Cross-san…" one of them tried to say, not reassuring Yuki at all.

"W-What?" she was beginning to feel a little scared, why were they all acting like that? then the students started to make a path for her, which the guardian hesitantly took. "Seriously guys, what's-" she stared ahead and felt the words instantly die on her tongue.

Someone was lying in the clearing, facedown and unmoving. Yuki's heart stopped...the silver hair she was looking for was stained a dark red on the grounds. It almost seemed like a scene from a nightmare.

Zero really wasn't moving from where he was lying. And from where she stood, she could plainly see...he wasn't breathing either.

"Y-Yah...what do you think you're doing?" Yuki shook her head, unable to properly process the scene in front of her, this can't really be happening...it had to be some sort of trick...right? "What kind of sick joke is this?" she said, trying to fight the sob that threatened to tear her throat. "Zero?"

Nothing.

She stepped closer, tears already spilling despite her still desperately hoping this was all just a bad joke and Zero would be suddenly up and laughing at her face. "S-Since when did you like to start pulling pranks on people, huh?" she tried to joke "Zero?"

But Zero remained motionless...chest still and face blank.

He looked...dead.

"No..No...NO! ZERO!"

Kaname Kuran made his way to the Sun dorms, ignoring the smell of sweet and deliciously intoxicating blood calling out to him, it was a good thing he already took his blood tablets before the smell drifted throughout the school. He had already instructed Takuma to tell the others to take their tablets and keep to their rooms, now the only thing left to do was deal with whatever was causing the massive spell of the liquid.

He frowned when he saw the majority of the Day class students outside the dorms, where was Yuki and Kiryuu? Shouldn't they be controlling the situation? Kaname found himself hurrying, the only consolation was the fact that he knew it was not Yuki's blood spilled, for he would know if it was her precious elixir...but who?

The answer was one he least expected.

Yuki was crying, cradling the head of no other than Zero Kiryuu who seemed to be the source of all the blood, to her chest. What struck him was that the hunter was...dead. He wasn't breathing, and even the vampire prince could not sense a heartbeat.

"What has happened here?" he asked one of the student closest to him politely.

"W-we heard a thud...then K-Kiryuu-kun was on the ground...and a lot of blood…" the black haired girl answered, in awe that the night dorm leader was talking to her.

"Thank you" he flashed her a smile and proceeded to Yuki's side, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Yuki…"

Yuki looked up at him, eyes brimming with tears. "K-Kaname-senpai...please… please tell Zero he can stop pretending now…" she whispered.

Kaname's heart clenched at the sight of his girl hurt, and felt anger towards the hunter for making her cry. He couldn't think of anything to say, he knew how Yuki loved the grumpy prefect like a younger brother and he knew how this is killing her on the inside.

Damn it Kiryuu, what the hell have you done?

"Everyone, please return to your dorms at once, it's late and there is class tomorrow" a loud voice came from the direction of the dorms, everyone turned to see their headmaster, not in his usual cheery personality, but in a serious voice that made everyone follow the order at once.

Soon enough the rest of the students have cleared out, only Cross. Kaname, Yuki and Zero left on the clearing. The older hunter turned to the still crying girl. and in her fatherly voice tried to urge "Yuki, you have to let him go…"

"But…"

"Zero won't be able to breathe if you hold on too tightly like that…" he said gently

"But...Zero...he's...he's…"

"It's alright Yuki, let go of him for now…" Kaname added, urging her to step away from the male prefect, which she did, albeit reluctantly, diving into his chest, sobbing uncontrollably again.

"He's dead!... Kaname-senpai...Zero's dead!" Yuki cried.

Cross took Yuki's place beside Zero's immobile form, shaking his head as he tried to assess the situation "What could've happened here?" he wondered.

"T-They said there was...a loud thud...and then Zero…" Yuki tried to explain, but ended up sobbing again mid-sentence, Kaname run soothing circles on her back, trying to calm her down as he too tried to understand.

"Kiryuu...fell?" the night dorm leader frowned at that, refusing to believe it. He looked up from where he could've fallen from, it was only 12 feet high, and though any normal human would have been instantly killed, Zero Kiryuu was no human after all, so it doesn't make sense. He could have get off with a few injuries at most, but not dead.

Unless he…

"Kaname-kun…"Cross caught his gaze and he knew they were both thinking of the same thing. The only reason Kiryuu ended up like this was because he threw himself over willingly. The boy tried to kill himself.

But once more it didn't make sense to them...if Zero really wanted to kill himself he had Bloody Rose to do it, and everyone knew the young man hated to give himself any attention, so why? He knew this kind of silly attempt would not be enough to kill him...yet here he was unmistakably dead… so what exactly happened?

Before any of them could speak, Kaname's instincts gave a sudden leap as he heard Zero's heart gave a faint jumpstart. He was kneeling down beside the boy as well before he could stop himself. "Kiryuu-kun"

"Kaname-senpai?" both Yuki and Cross looked at him hopeful and confused.

"He's still alive" he said in a hushed voice. "Kiryuu-kun" he called again, more firmly this time, trying to call the boy back to consciousness. The boy was a vampire, the only way to save him now was to give him blood.

"What? Zero! Can you hear me? Zero!" Yuki called him as well, Kaname knew her voice would be more effective than his own, But they had to hurry, Zero's weak and erratic heartbeat was on the verge of stilling once more.

"We're going to lose him" Kaname growled, his hands covered with the younger boy's blood as he placed them over his chest. There was no time to deliberate other options, uncharacteristically the vampire prince brought his own wrist to his lips, without a second thought sank his fangs down, drawing his own blood and storing them inside his mouth.

Damn it Kiryuu, you better not give up or I'm bringing you back to life so I can kill you myself! He thought, prying Zero's mouth open and closing his own over them, letting the blood flood inside. The boy was unresponsive at first, and he was about to pull away when he suddenly felt the silverette respond, weakly suckling back, hoping to get more of the precious liquid vital to him now. Only when he saw sure Zero had taken enough blood did he detach himself.

Yuki was staring at the scene with a blush, now she haven't told anyone yet, but lately she was reading BL mangas with her friend Yori, and what she witnessed just now is just like one of those scene she read in the books! Kaname-senpai was like a real-life prince after all, and Zero...well, he was pretty, not that he would ever accept that compliment.

It looks like Kaname-senpai is giving Zero a kiss to wake him up~ she thought

She snapped herself out of her thoughts as Kaname pulled away from Zero, worry snapping back in place as she took her place beside her adoptive brother once more "Zero?"

Kaname stared at the the prefect, Zero's heartbeat has taken on a steady rhythm with the help of his blood in his system. It was still rather weak, but definitely more stable. Once he was more rested and stronger he could drink more blood to heal faster. His eyes fell on the rise and fall of the younger male's chest, contemplating his actions. Normally he wouldn't have done anything so readily for anyone other than his beloved Yuki, much less this hunter, who hated him since the day they set eyes on each other.

He retracted his fangs, recalling the feeling when Zero was trying to suck blood from him. The pureblood mentally shook his head, now was not the time to be thinking of such things, he only did what must be done, it was all for Yuki's sake, she would be devastated if he didn't save the grumpy hunter. He only saved Kiryuu for her.

"He's going to be alright Yuki…"

Yuki smiled gratefully up at him, and Kaname knew he did the right thing "Thank you for saving him, Kaname-senpai…"

Cross also sighed in relief at the news, their eyes widened when they felt the boy stir...the blond man's eyes welled up in happiness. "He's waking up!" he almost shouted the words. he was too happy. "Zero?"

Lilac eyes opened and stared around in confusion, Gasping, Zero clasped a hand to his head as the pain started to build up in his head even at the least of movement. He stared at the others surrounding him "W-What-" he tried to say, but was cut off when Yuki suddenly tackled him.

"Zero! You're awake! Thank God you're okay! You scared me to death! I am so ready to give you the cold treatment after this!" the brunette girl cried, sobbing on his shoulder, genuinely happy to see her best friend and brother alive.

"U-Uhm…"

"Don't even start apologizing now, you don't know how I am traumatized at the image of you dead, stupid!"

Zero stared at her uncertainly "I'm sorry if I scared you..." Yuki, Kaname and Cross were all taken aback at the tone and words they never thought they would hear from the hunter. "But, why are you crying, nee-chan? And...who is Zero?"
