CHAPTER ELEVEN
Time Skip: Interhigh Quarterfinals, Too vs Kaijo
Kuroko diligently learned all the team member's skills to heart and created each individual training menu to buffer their specialties while they trained and enhanced mutual skills together, and also created a training menu that the team could add with their current training. Coach Takeuchi was impressed with the freshman's innovative ideas. Like playing children's games in allowing them to be more observant of their opponent's movements while having fun and bonding together. Kuroko Tetsuya easily made them stronger and more united in a couple of months.
Coach Takeuchi was a little worried about the progress of the team when Kuroko Tetsuya have started to be their manager. For one whole straight week, he have observed them during their practice, quietly and rather unnoticeably. Just when he was about to ask what the freshman was planning, the former Seirin-player have asked him how he thinks about the training menu he had come up with. It was...impressive (A/N: I'm an ultimate frisbee player, I have no idea how basketball players train lol so I apologize for the lack of specific details).
But even if they have gotten stronger over little time, Coach Takeuchi isn't sure if it's enough to defeat Touo. No, he shouldn't think like that. His team is more than capable of matching one of the most offensive teams in Tokyo. They have Aomine Daiki? Well, they have Kise Ryota AND Kuroko Tetsuya. He has to have more than enough confidence in both himself and in his team.
The whistle for the start of the game blew.
"So what Kise said was true."
When Aomine received that message that Tetsu was going to Kaijo, it made him furious at first. It wasn't fair, why the hell did his former partner chose to go to Kaijo of all places. Then he calmed down a bit when he realized that no, Tetsu wouldn't do that. Especially to Seirin. There must be another reason as to why he moved to a school in Kanagawa. So on the day of his match with Kaijo, he decided to see if Tetsu will be around. And surprise, surprise, the teal haired teen was there. But he was confused when the teal haired teen wasn't part of the line up. Surely, the team knows that Tetsu is more than qualified to be a regular AND play against the Generation of Miracles, right? Even if its breaking the oath. So he decided to confront Tetsu instead.
Tetsuya turned to the tanned male with a curious expression. "What did Kise-kun say?"
"A couple of months ago he messaged us that you're moving to Kaijo."
'Kise-kun sure has a big mouth.' Tetsuya thought. Not that he's hiding that he moved to Kaijo. Well, it's not like there's much he can do. There is no way that he can ask his mother for him to stay back in Tokyo to continue attending Seirin when he can't very much take care of himself, and he doesn't want to waste the opportunity to get to know his new family as well. He just loves his family more than basketball. "Yes. It's true. I moved to Kaijo."
"Akashi won't like it that you're in the same team with Kise."
The teal haired teen nodded. "But I won't be playing Aomine-kun. You noticed, right? I act as as the manager of the team. Practically the same thing that Momoi-san does."
Aomine stood in shock. He moved to Kaijo and joined the basketball club but decides to become a manager instead? But...but why?! This still doesn't explain why the other had transferred out of Seirin and in to Kaijo.
He wasn't prepared for the explanation.
Huh, so he and the Kaijo Captain are step brothers now. That explains the transfer. But it doesn't explain why Tetsu isn't playing in the team when he's pretty sure that's he a part of it.
"Even though it may come as underestimating everyone when I say that I find it unfair if I'll be on the team with Kise-kun. But that is how I feel. It wont feel like victory for me or for anyone else if we played together." Tetsuya explained. "I also believe that Kise-kun has more potential to improve so much more and that he may play toe to toe with you someday."
The rest of the Seirin watched the game until the end, and are very much sympathetic with Kaijo's loss against Touo. Kagami had went off to find his partner, while the team decided to go somewhere to wait for him.
The large teen couldn't believe he found Kuroko...Kasamatsu right away. The pale haired teen was by the vending machine, buying several bottles of different kinds of drinks.
"Yo Kuroko." he called out.
Tetsuya flinched in surprise and nearly dropped a bottle. He mock-glared at Kagami "Please don't sneak up on me like that, Kagami-kun."
Kagami grabbed a couple of the drinks to help his friend and returned a glare of his own "Don't be a hypocrite!"
The two of them sat down on the bench beside the vending machine, keeping quiet and neither making eye contact. But the atmosphere wasn't awkward. They had moments like this before back when Tetsuya was still in Seirin. The team hardly sees it, but they spend their time like this outside the club. Keeping quiet. But Kagami have no plans in keeping quiet for now.
"There's still the Winter Cup." Tetsuya said. He can already feel what his partner is going to say. They may not be in the same team anymore, but they still consider each other partners.
Kagami grinned. "Seirin's not going to lose."
Kuroko returned the gesture with his own. "We will not lose either. "
After the rest of the team accompanied their ace to the infirmary to check his legs, Tetsuya waited outside the gymnasium for his brother. It was a little cold, but he wants to give his brother the time, space and the privacy. He had wanted to accompany the team to watch over Kise-kun, but he was more worried about his brother rather than the blonde. Tetsuya was certain that his team mate is actually coping right this moment, once he realizes that he has the potential to stand beside Aomine all along. He had learned from the Coach about what happened before Yukio became the Captain, when Kaijo was defeated in the IH preliminaries because Yukio made a simple mistake that gave the opposing team the victory. What happened at the last quarter of their game with Touo was like a painful reminder of that moment, Tetsuya thought. But he knew, that his brother is not weak. That this won't affect him as much as it did that time when he almost quit basketball.
And he was right when his brother finally stepped out of the gymnasium, all cleaned up and evidence of grieving over their loss and the teal haired teen approached his brother and gently held Yukio's hand, the older's hand more warm and larger compared to his.
Yukio turned to his younger brother with a solemn smile and held his younger brother's hand tighter, but not uncomfortably tight. He was thankful for the private moment he was given by everyone, time he used to let his anger and deep frustration out before he composes himself again, and accept that their team was defeated for now.
The team had went ahead of them, and both of them took the bus home, still not letting go of one another's hands.
And once they got home, Manami knew by the look on her son's faces on what had happened. She smiled at her boys, softly telling them that they get their rest, take a bath and have some dinner. And she felt her heart flutter when she saw how they still haven't let go of one another's hands.
Manami doesn't have the heart to wake up her two adorable sons, who are sprawled on the couch with semi-dry hair. But they need to eat dinner, to fill their stomach (especially Yukio, for once) and so, she sends her husband to do the deed.
Yuuta smiled in amusement at his eldest son's behavior. He himself have a younger brother (he also have an older brother, making him the middle child) but they didn't exactly have that kind of relationship where they were comfortable enough to hold each other's hands or be over protective. That's why he's very happy on how close his two sons are becoming. "Yukio, Tetsuya, dinner's ready. If you don't hurry, Nigou's going to eat all of them."
At the mention of his name, the adorable puppy barks happily and excitedly ran to his favorite master and started to lick his hand and fingers, and proceeded to lick Yukio's face as well.
Both Kasamatsu brothers groaned at the wet wake up call and headed to the dining table to eat some dinner.
"Good Evening Tetsuya, I hope I'm not interrupting anything important?"
Tetsuya was momentarily conflicted whether to answer his phone or not when it rang, especially when he saw who was calling him. But he knew this was going to happen sooner or later and it is better to confront this now rather than postponing it.
"Good Evening Akashi-kun. I take that you also received the news?"
"Yes, and I want an explanation as to why you're there in Kaijo with Ryouta rather than in Seirin with Kagami Taiga. I will drop by in Kanagawa some time when I can so that you may explain to me why you're defying our oath. Good Evening and Good Night Tetsuya."
Tetsuya was tempted to sigh, but he held it in and bid the other good night as well and then all he could hear is the dial tone.
The teal haired teen turned to Nigou and ran his fingers through his fluffy fur, the puppy leaning over his master's hand for more.
"It's going to be a little hard to explain all this to Akashi-kun."
