Chapter 8
Kagome
"Heeeeyyyyyyyyyyy" Inuyasha whined "I'm sorry dogs sleep OUTside!" Suka slammed the door. She turned and went to sit on her bed. I knew what was about to happen she was about to rattle my date right out of me.
"Well?" she said a grin gracing her smooth features.
"Well what?" I said even though I was fully aware of what we were talking about.
"What happened on your D-A-T-E?" I gave her a look and shifted my eyes toward the door where Inuyasha was undoubtedly listening. Suka caught my meaning and walked over to my desk, she pulled out a spiral notebook and a pen. She wrote something down in it and handed it to me.
I was lying on my bed holding the notebook; Suka was just a few feet away on her bed reading. I looked down at the conversation we had written in the notebook.
How was the date?
It was okay? She looked unusually relieved when she saw that.
Oh no! What did he do?
He was stiff? The date was too planned out.
How do you mean?
He was constantly looking at his stupid watch!
Why?
We were supposed to be at certain places at certain times.
Wow that's lame! Sometime pasted before I decided to write again.
He kissed me.
And?
It was sweet.
Not what you wanted?
Yeah
Inuyasha? My eyes had gotten wide when she wrote that and I put down the notebook.
"Yes" I said looking up at her to see her expression. She just smiled one of her I-Totally-Knew-It smiles and kept reading. I looked toward the window and hoped to God that Inuyasha was a sleep or had no idea what we were about to talk about. "I couldn't stop thinking about him the entire time. Even while…"
"Kagome are you trying to ask me if you're in love."
My head shot up and I started to blush profusely, shaking my hands trying to wave the idea away, "No, no, not all!" 'Could I love Inuyasha? Yeah but there is no way he loves me!'
"Look just because I'm older than you does not mean I know any more than you do. Even though I do, but whatever," she said staring at the book.
Then it hit me, "You've never been in love?" I knew she hadn't had many boyfriends but she must have fallen for someone at least once? I remembered my first crush, that little boy in the third grade; I had been in love with that boy for a whole year before he put gum in my hair.
She put down the book and stared at the ceiling, thoughtfully. "I… don't know," she sighed, "It's like I know but yet I don't. I know who I'm looking for but I don't know who he is." She looked over at me a concentrated look on her face, "…And I make no sense!"
"Actually I understand completely." 'Is Inuyasha who I'm looking for?' Suka picked the book back up and pretended to read it, I knew she was listening. "When I was little," I began, "I had this dream once and I had thought the guy I saw in the dream was 'the one'. I would look for him everywhere I went."
"Mmmmhmm"
"Do you really think I love him?"
"Yepp" I stared at the floor thinking for a while.
"Why? I mean how do you know?" I asked. She sighed and sat up, closing her book.
"I know because… it's in the way your voice changes when you talk about him. It's the way you look relaxed and almost smile when you think about him. It's the friction, I sense, that grows when your close to him, and the fact that you haven't stopped blushing since we began this conversation." My blush spread completely over my face, once she mentioned it. "And with that being said, I'm going to take a shower. Good night." She stood up and removed her jacket; her shirt was big and looked awkward on her. And now that I was looking at it more closely the shirt was stiff like it was brand new. "Did you just buy that shirt?" she stopped, looking even more relaxed than usual. I might not have seen her in a while but if there was one thing I knew how to do, it was read Suka; she was lying. "What?" she said convincingly.
"Your shirt looks brand new."
"I don't wear it very often; it was Junichi's." Junichi was her brother; as far as we all knew he was dead somewhere in Europe. No one had heard from him in the last couple of years. I gotta hand it to her, it was a believable lie. She turned and walked out of the room, leaving me to my thoughts. Why would Suka lie about a shirt? I know she didn't steal it; Suka had too much pride to steal something. But that thought got me wondering; why was she lying? What else was she lying about? Where did she get the shirt? Where were her parents? Why was she living here? Why was she so serious? Where did that Kung Fu crap come from? Should I be writing this down? I was so caught up in my own thoughts that I didn't even notice Inuyasha come in, until he slipped on the papers that were on the desk; that was now placed in front of the window to make room for the extra bed.
"What's your problem?" he said steadying himself on the desk. I didn't answer him; instead I just continued to stare at the floor. He jumped off the desk and walked towards me. "Hello?" he said waving his hands in front of my face. I narrowed my eyes; you know he was real jerk sometimes. "Sit," I whispered without realizing how close he was to me until his head came crashing down in my lap. With that much force I would definitely have bruises later.
Immediately I began to laugh, I don't know why I guess it was funny. We would have to stay like that until the spell wore off. My laughing had subsided to a giggle by the time Suka came in. "Whoa!" she said turning around, away from us. "Its not that I'm not happy for you guys, because I am, but you really need to try to make it quick or do it when I'm not here!" I laughed and was about to explain when Inuyasha started to growl. I squeaked when he parted my legs lifted them and burying his face in my center. My heart was racing as he began to crawl up my body. "Inuyasha… please… don't." I whimpered he looked at me then his eyes golden. A grin crossed his face as he winked at me like I was in on some little secret. I was confused but none the less relieved when Suka was at my side; having yanked Inuyasha off of me by the hair slamming him into the ground.
"I believe it is time for you to leave." She said calmly at this moment Suka was dangerous, at this moment I feared for her. And in that moment two things were clear to me. I knew why she had beat up that tree this morning. This was why; protection. And I knew why Inuyasha had winked at me; he had made her cross on purpose.
Inuyasha got back up, hand on sword, feet in stance. "Exactly who is going to make me?" he half yelled. Suka head straightened, as if she had just made a decision, her face in a blank mask, she took a slow step. And in a low, dark voice she said, "You will leave. Now." As if Inuyasha had understood the seriousness of what he had just done tensing he disappeared through the window. She walked over and sat on her bed. "Suka?" I got up and walked over to her, she gave me the biggest smile manageable, I knew it wasn't real. "I'm tired I'm gonna go to bed," she said in the lightest tone I had ever heard her use. Making a point that it wasn't a discussion she got up and turned off the light. We both went to our beds and laid down. She was oddly silent, for a second I thought she would cry. So I waited… it never came. "Suka?" I asked timidly, staring into the dark.
"Yeah?" she whispered.
"If I ask you a question will you answer me truthfully?"
"Kagome, if you're about to piss me off I would advise you from doing so."
"What happened to your parents?" I asked softly. She was quiet for a long time and I heard her turn over in her bed. "Suka?"
"They left," she muttered.
"Why?" I waited and again she didn't answer. I wasn't just curious, I needed to know; I got up and turned on the light. Suka sat up; she was pissed. "Would you tell me?" I waited, "Suka!"
"I got an abortion! Okay?" My eyes went wide and I had to sit down, "My parents were a bunch of religious freaks and didn't care that I was raped but that I got an abortion! That answer your question? Can I go to sleep now?" her voice increasingly irritated, she sat up and turned the light out, lying down. I was so stunned I didn't know what to do, so in a stupor I walked over into my bed and laid down.
The next thing I knew a soft voice and strong arms where shaking me awake; it was Inuyasha. He pressed a finger to his lips, signaling for me to be quiet. I got up and went to change my clothes we were leaving now, even though I didn't quite know why. When I was ready Inuyasha had my big yellow bag, I got on his back and he jumped out the window toward the shrine. My thoughts in a stupor I didn't notice that my bag wasn't restocked and more importantly I didn't notice the glowing white eyes peering down from my window. I hardly recognized the feudal era when the wonderful fresh air, but I did recognize the jewel shard not a mile south of us.
