Chapter 7:
It was a beautiful Sunday at Hogwarts. Since lessons had only just started, the students attending the school had only a small amount of homework, and thus they were able to enjoy one of the last days of summer. The sun was shining and birds could be heard on the grounds, the giant squid was enjoying the weather.
Under the tree next to the lake, Maya was reading. It was her favourite pastime for a sunny and lazy Sunday afternoon. But when she looked up, her good mood vanished very quickly. Some distance from her, she was able to see Sirius flirting with some girls from a year below them. She obviously couldn't hear what he was saying to them, but she could guess it very easily. He seemed to be in luck and put his arm around one of them as he guided the girl away. It was one of those easy to get, tall blonde dumbo's.
Maya knew from the stories Remus had told her in her time, that Sirius was quite the ladies man and would hook up with a different girl every week. Only to dump them for another girl, not caring for their feelings.
With a deep sigh, Maya started reading in her book again. When suddenly she was interrupted of her thoughts on Sirius by a shadow. She looked up and saw Remus standing next to her. He took his notebook, he had started the habit of taking it everywhere he went so he could use it to communicate with Maya. 'Can I sit with you to read some?' It said. She smiled at him and nodded her head.
Remus sat down next to her and took out his book. They sat there for over an hour, in silence, both reading. Maya enjoyed it very much and she was grateful for Remus trying to be a good friend and making sure she wasn't alone on this Sunday afternoon. Because even after this first week of classes and finally being around people of her own age again after her lonely summer, she felt alone. People either didn't dare to talk to her because she is the granddaughter of the Headmaster. Or they didn't know how to talk to her because of her being deaf, most of her classmates just found it awkward being around her.

Remus and Maya packed up their stuff around 5 in the afternoon. And together they made their way to the common room. Just before they got to the entrance, they bumped into a snogging couple. The couple was so into it, they didn't even noticed they were being watched.
Remus touched the young man's shoulder who startled out of the moment and finally saw them.
"Sirius, what did I tell you about making out in the middle of the hallways?" Remus sighed. Maya stood beside him, obviously weirded out by Sirius. Nut it wasn't because of the reason Remus was grossed out. "It is very inappropriate to do these things were anyone can bump into you. Please do these thing in private."
"Yeah yeah, I'll try and think of it the next timeā¦" Sirius moaned and he led the girl away down the corridor, away from the common room.
In the meantime, Maya was distracted by her thoughts of Sirius. She had heard stories about him from Remus and from Sirius himself, but somehow she couldn't image the grim and depressed looking future-Sirius as a skirt hunting man. She couldn't picture him as a young man, hooking up with almost every young woman in Hogwarts. Well, she still couldn't do that, future-Sirius and this Sirius were very different from each other. It was clear that Sirius would face some major events and would have to get through a very dark time in his life in the not so distant future. And Maya wasn't happy about that fact, but she still hadn't figured out how to help her new friends, or how she could prevent the bad things that were about to happen, without changing the future. That would have drastic and unforeseeable consequences she wanted to avoid in any way possible.
While she was distracted by her own thoughts, Remus had guided her towards the entrance of the common room and sneaking some looks in her direction. He thought she was awfully upset by walking into Sirius and his new girlfriend-of-the-week. He also thought that maybe this was because she was developing feelings for his friend, and that was something he wasn't all too happy about. Because this past few days, he himself was developing an interest in the fascinating and interesting new student. He thought she was very beautiful and had been trying his best to get to know her. Even with the difficulties in communicating, he thought they were making some progress in getting to know each other.
He really hoped Maya wasn't falling for Sirius, because she would probably end up with a broken heart. It was highly likely Sirius would try to hook up with her, but the reason wouldn't be her nice personality or her talent to hold an intelligent conversation. He would see her more as a price, a trophy, because she is Dumbledore's granddaughter and therefore probably more difficult to get. Remus would be very disappointed if Maya fell for Sirius, he didn't think Sirius was good enough for her.
Upon arriving in the common room, Maya smiled and bid Remus goodbye, thanking him for the nice afternoon together. Immediately she made her way to Lily, who was sitting in a corner writing a letter home. Once Remus noticed they were only using Sign Language, he realised his curiosity in the conversation wouldn't be satisfied. So he made a beeline for his dorm to pack his schoolbag for the next day.
Meanwhile Maya was venting about what she had just seen in the hallway. "He was practically eating her face! It was disgusting! Really, why does he need to do that where anyone can see it?" Maya plopped down in the chair across from Lily and signed furiously about the experience. "Does he really not think about his fellow students or what the might think about it after running into that?"
"Wow! Where is all this coming from? Who did what exactly?" Lily was very startled, her friend was usually very composed and a bit more withdrawn.
"Sirius, he was making out with some blonde in the hallway just outside of the common room. Remus and I walked into them." Maya told her, still a bit upset.
"And why does this upset you so much? I thought you didn't care for him?" Lily smiled a bit because of how uncomfortable Maya got after that question. She figured Maya was getting some mild feelings for Sirius, which was perfectly normal. He was very handsome, any female student at Hogwarts could tell you that? They would also tell you that every single one of them, even the ones who are older than Sirius, once had a crush on him. And either they became a part of the long and growing list of girlfriends at one time or another, or they grew out of their crush. Only one girl in the whole of the Hogwarts student body seemed to be Sirius' more than one week: Samantha Carter, sixth year Gryffindor girl Lily and Maya share a dorm with. And even with her, the relationship is constantly on and off again.
"hmpf, I just don't like having to watch something like that okay, no one does." Maya was being stubborn. She took the book she was reading earlier and opened it at the page she left of earlier. She wasn't about to go blur out everything, at least not to someone she only knew for such a short amount of time, not to mention the mother of her best friend.

Later that day, during dinner, Maya ignored Sirius. Or at least did everything she could to ignore him. She did everything she could not to look at him. Instead she focused on Lily and Remus, who were telling her all about the different Hogwarts traditions. She knew about the traditions that where being done in her own time, and wondered who different things were here.
"The first one is Halloween, of course! You get to dress up in a costume, or just in your everyday clothes. But they encourage us to wear a costume. The house with the most original costume usually wins some house points too." Lily explained very enthusiastically. It was obvious she was looking forward to it, probably already has a costume idea or two.
Remus nodded and continued: "And then there is the yule ball of course, although this is only for the fourth years and above. And then there is the Valentines dinner, where we can sit at tables of two or at tables for small groups. You have to make something like a reservation and tell the teachers with which students you would like to reserve a table." Lily quickly translated everything for Maya. She was becoming very interested in the conversation, as some of these traditions seemed to have changed over the years.
"And at the end of the years there is a goodbye party for all of the students and a ceremony for the graduates. But there's also the unofficial traditions of course, like the snowball fight between the four houses after the first snow has fallen for example." Remus added to the list, he did seem to look forward to that one.
"Oh the schoolyear is always so much fun! And it flies by extremely quickly too! You are going to enjoy your time here, I am sure of it!" Lily was being so enthusiastic, Maya couldn't help but smile. Now if only she could get used to being friends with the Marauders and Lily. With people she knew where going to die in less than 4 years. If only she could hold her tongue and not do anything to change their fate. Only then she could be certain nothing was going to be different in the future she came from. There was no telling what could change if she altered it in any way, she only hoped nothing had changed already with her being here.
And just like that, her good mood was gone again.
