Chapter 42: Time to Act
The entire ride back to the hospital in the ambulance all Dan could think about was Blair. He would get to see his beautiful wife again. Unfortunately for him, when he arrived at the hospital, Serena, Nate, Cyrus, and Eleanor were all that awaited him.
"Where is she?" Dan glared at Nate.
"She…ah…" Nate hesitated looking at Serena.
"She left with Detective Halstead and Lindsay to go after Milo."
Dan saw red. Eleanor threw a bitch fit. Cyrus tried to reason with them both.
"I'm sure Blair has a perfect explanation…" Cyrus started.
"Where is Detective Voight?" Dab demanded cutting him off. "And how the hell would she know where Milo was?"
"She got a call from Jenny." Nate explained.
Dan went pale with shock.
"Jenny?"
"Yeah. For some reason Jenny called her and said she knew where he was. She also knew about the explosives." Serena added.
"Oh Jenny." Dan cried covering his face with his hands.
"What is it Dan?" Eleanor asked nervously.
"Dimitri kidnapped Jenny from New York and was trying to use her as leverage to get me to cooperate."
"Leverage?" Cyrus asked confused. "Leverage for what?"
Dan dropped his hands and looked at his family and friends with sad eyes.
"Dimitri wanted me to bring Blair back to him. He was giving me 24 hours and then we were supposed to return to some warehouse on the south side."
"You weren't going to…" Eleanor started but then stopped when she saw the glare Dan gave her.
"I would never put your daughter in danger, but I was trying to figure out how to get my sister out of this mess in the meantime, but it appears she has taken matters into her own hands."
"It doesn't make sense." Cyrus frowned. "Why would he use Jenny as a bargaining chip only to try and kill you both hours later?"
"That's what is scaring me Cyrus." Dan sighed. "What happened? What made him change plans?"
The door swung open and Detective Voight entered looking more pissed than normal.
"Mr. Humphrey." He nodded. "Glad to see you well."
"Thank you Detective." Dan nodded back.
"We have a situation on our hands. What do you know?"

When they pulled up to the warehouse Jenny's stomach was doing flips. She was not entirely sure she could do this. She looked over to find Lucas looking at her. He was nervous too. His hand reached out and clasped hers.
"No matter what happens…" he swallowed, "…just know that I truly did care about you and…"
Jenny brought her free hand up to stop him.
"I'm not ready to say goodbyes yet." She smiled faintly. "Let's get my nephew back and then decide where this is going to go, ok?"
Lucas smiled back at her weakly but nodded.
"Deal."
The warehouse was huge. Crates and boxes everywhere as well as boats, cars, and other valuable merchandise.
"What the heck is this place?" Jenny asked in awe.
"My uncles stash I guess you could say." Lucas answered leading her down another row of crates. "Follow me exactly. I know where the cameras are."
They came to the other end of the warehouse to a heavy metal door.
"This door leads to a second floor." Lucas whispered. "Dimitri has residence apartments above the warehouse. It's where he and Georgina have been hiding with Milo."
Jenny nodded getting up to follow. Lucas shook his head no.
"I should go first. There is a camera on the door. When I go in wait 10 seconds before following."
Jenny hesitated but then sat back on her heel obeying. He had gotten her this far. She watched with anticipation as Lucas approached the door and pressed a buzzer.
"Name."
A rough male voice boomed on the overhead speaker making Jenny jump.
"Lucas Markov." Lucas responded confidently.
There was a loud beep sound and the door unlocked. She watched as Lucas opened the door and slip inside. Before she could doubt him she saw his phone jut out at the bottom of the door halting it from locking shut behind him. She let out the breath she hadn't know she had been holding. She waited the 10 second he had requested them quickly ran to the door and slipped inside grabbing his phone.
It was dark in the room when the door shut but she could see a light at the top of the stairs and could see the outline of Lucas. He was talking to another man.
"Another late night Anthony?" Lucas asked in a friendly tone.
"Eh you know- Dimitri is so intense about the Mrs. and Jr. Needs them watched day and night."
The man sounded older and nice.
"I understand. I would be the same way." Lucas laughed in polite conversation.
Jenny started up the stairs but suddenly halted when the first floor board cracked underneath her weight.
"Wait!" The older man said to Lucas. "Did you hear that?"
Lucas paused with the man to listen while Jenny froze.
"Al! Do you see anything on the camera?"
Jenny heard this Anthony walk over past Lucas into another room to the left. She said a quick prayer and raced up the stairs to Lucas who pushed her to the right of the room Al and Anthony were in, staring at cameras lined all over the wall.
"Not a thing." Al sighed stretching in his seat. Jenny peered past Lucas and took in the small security room. Al had a couple empty cups of coffee around him and an unfinished opened romantic book in front of him. "Must be hearing things again old man!" Al joked with Anthony.
"Can never be too careful Al! Dimitri would have our asses if…"
"Yeah yeah yeah I know…" Al waved him off looking back down at his book.
Anthony rolled his eyes and walked back over to Lucas who stepped inside the doorway to protect Jenny from detection.
"Uncle Dimitri send me over with some documents." Lucas lied.
Anthony looked him up and down suspiciously.
"Dimitri is here son. Just arrived about 30 minutes ago."
"I know." Lucas played off. "He had forgotten them."
Anthony still seemed suspicious but waved it off.
"Very well Young Markov." Anthony pressed a button allowing another buzzer to sound making the door next to Jenny to pop open. Jenny took her cue and slipped inside and hugged the wall waiting patiently for Lucas. She heard him say his farewells and slipped in behind her.
"Listen." Lucas whispered. "Milo is in a room down this hallway to the left. When you get to him just get him and escape through the window at the end of the hallway. It lifts up from the bottom with a lever to the right of the window. There is an escape stairwell below it and the car is just around the left of the building. I left the keys in the visor."
"What about you?!" Jenny asked suddenly panicked.
"I have to distract them."
"Aren't you coming with us?" Jenny asked hoping he would say yes.
"Jenny." He sighed. "There is no chance of that."
His eyes met hers then. Regret and sadness was there. Now she understood why he started to say goodbye in the car. Her heart sank. The despair at the thought of never seeing him again hit her hard. Before she could stop herself she pressed her lips to his. He responded fiercely moving his lips against hers. She opened her mouth and allowed him to deepen their kiss one final time. She pulled away and kissed his cheek, then took off down the hallway in search of her nephew.

Erin had no idea why, she was speeding towards the other side of Chicago as fast as her car would take her.
"Who told you about this?" Erin asked Blair again for the 5th time.
"Her name is Jenny Humphrey. She is my sister-in-law! I don't know how either but she is here in Chicago and somehow found out where Milo is."
"You're sure you can trust her?" Halstead asked cautiously.
"Of course!" Blair snapped. "What kind of question is that?"
"Blair!" Erin snapped back. "We don't know Jenny—we barley know you, so Jay is just making sure that we are getting the full picture here, ok?"
Erin looked in the rear view mirror and saw Blair flop back into the back seat deflated.
"She can be trusted." She murmured. "I don't know why she is here or how. All I care about is that she knows where my Milo is."
"What about Dan?" Halstead asked looking back at her. "Don't you think he would have wanted you with him instead of with us out here?"
They had tried to leave Blair at the hospital with Serena and Nate. They had begged her to stay—to let the police do their job—to go see Dan—but she wouldn't hear a word and insisted on going with Erin and Halstead to find Milo. Halstead had denied her permission at first, but one look at Lindsay and he knew she would let Blair come.
"Dan will understand." Blair answered quietly.
"Look Blair…" Erin interrupted, "…when we get there you have to promise me that you will wait in the car first. I could get into big trouble bringing you along."
"I'll say." Halstead interjected.
Blair and Erin both glared at him. He shrank a little in his seat.
"Ok." Blair nodded at her. "I'll stay put."
Suddenly the radio blared.
"Halstead! Lindsay! What is your location?"
It was Voight. Halstead glared at Erin and grabbed the walkie.
"In route to 2365 Copperfield Lane, about 36 miles South West of Chicago."
"You better not be doing what I think you're doing."
His tone was hot and sharp. Erin grabbed the walkie from Halstead.
"We are chasing a lead."
"Halstead and Lindsay— get your asses back here! You are out of our jurisdiction and have no cover. Do you have Mrs. Humphrey with you?"
This time Blair sank in her seat.
"She is a witness and has valuable information about a possible location for the missing person." Erin replied just as sharply.
"Erin." This time Voight's voice was low but just as scary. "Don't be stupid. You know you are walking into something dangerous. Turn around, come back and we will face this all as soon as we can with a warrant and back up."
"Erin! Please!" Blair begged. "If you turn around now and leave Jenny there with no help…"
Erin knew what Blair was implying…and she agreed with her. She had to act. They had to act now or risk losing Dan's sister and Milo. Possibly for good once Dimitri learned of his failed attempt to kill Dan and Blair—if he didn't already.
"WWHD." Erin finally answered, then flipped the switch turning the radio off.
"Erin!" Halstead yelled at her. "What the hell?!"
Blair let out the breath she had been holding.
"What would Hank do?" She answered and asked Halstead with a grin.
"He's gonna kill you." Halstead glared.
"Maybe…but he will arrive with back up first."

Jenny slowly crept down the long dark hallway, careful not to make a sound. She could hear voices at the other end. She knew Lucas's but wasn't sure of the other man's. Then she heard a voice she did recognize.
"Not his book again."
It was Georgina.
Jenny followed the voice down another hallway to her left and saw light on in a room two doors down.
"Mommy is tired of this book baby. What about Goodnight Moon? That's a fun book right?"
As Jenny neared the door she heard another voice she recognized. A voice that made tears sting her eyes. She peered inside to see her little nephew in pj's and a batman cap. Georgina sat next to him holding up Goodnight Moon, flashing a fake smile of interest in her selection for a nighttime story.
"I no wants that book!" Milo whined shoving Goodnight Moon out of Georgina's hands. The book hit the floor with a loud thump.
"Milo!" Georgina glared. "That was not nice!"
Georgina slid off the bed and grabbed Goodnight Moon.
"Batman! Batman! Batman!" Milo jumped up and down on the bed making his request known.
"Fine." Georgina scoffed. "Then you don't get a bedtime story."
This sent Milo into a sleepy furious fit. He picked up his pillows one by one and whaled them at Georgina. If Jenny had to guess, this hadn't been the first fit Georgina had encountered with Milo. She sighed heavily and turned off the light turning towards the door. Panicking, slipped inside the dark room to her immediate left and prayed to God Georgina wasn't heading there next.
"Noooooo!" Milo bawled. "Baaatmaaaan!"
Jenny's heart lurched in her chest at hearing the despair in her nephew's voice.
Georgina slammed Milo's door shut and locked it with a key she place back into her pocket.
"I swear to God." Georgina muttered to herself turning down the hallway. "If we don't break him of this Batman bullshit soon, it's going to be the end of me!"
She waited until Georgina had turned the corner and her footsteps were faint before she slipped back into the hallway pulling bobby pin out of her hair hoping she remembered how to pick a lock.

Lucas felt sick. Walking into his Uncle's home office, the scent of cigar smoke and gun powder hung heavily in the room, reminding him of his childhood. His father's office had smelled just like this and it made the ache in his heart a little stronger.
"Lucas."
Dimitri's voice was booming startling him back a step.
"Hello Uncle." Lucas nodded politely.
"Please sit." Dimitri swung around in his chair pointing to the couch to the left of the room. "Have a drink."
Lucas nodded again and went to the brown leather couch and picked up the whiskey bottle pouring himself a drink. He felt Dimitri's eyes on him before he looked up.
"I wanted to speak with you privately." Lucas said bravely looking up to meet his Uncle's gaze.
"I see." Dimitri grinned taking a sip of his own drink. "And would it have anything to do with the girl?"
Lucas swallowed nervously and but took a deep breath to try to push that off. This Uncle of his was good at smelling fear.
"Jenny." Lucas answered with a nod.
"Yes." Dimitri nodded. "It was very brave of you to be upfront and honest about your feelings for her. So many of my men would have ran or lied, but you…no you told me the truth."
"You are shocked." Lucas stated more than asked.
"Not as much shocked as I am surprised." Dimitri laughed. "I never imagined that my young nephew would standout so quickly among our family."
"I am my father's son." Lucas replied with pride.
"That you are." Dimitri replied coolly running a finger along his chin. "He was a good man, and a great big brother. Taught me much about life and the family business. Things I'm sure he passed to you."
Lucas nodded in agreement.
"He did instill in me a love for our family…and for you Uncle Dimitri."
The last part was a lie, but Lucas needed to win over his Uncle if he was to walk out of here alive.
"That surprises me." Dimitri laughed. "He and I never saw eye to eye. He was all about honor while I knew where the real power lied."
"And where was that?" Lucas asked curious.
"In Family, money and glory of course." Dimitri grinned menacingly.
"Is that why you stole the money?" Lucas asked suddenly. He had promised himself he wouldn't bring it up, but he had to, he had to know.
"I knew you would ask me this one day." Dimitri admitted sitting up more in his chair, resting his forearms on his desk. "Ask me the real question."
Lucas's heart raced and he swallowed nervously again.
"Did you have my father killed?" Lucas finally asked.
"Yes." Dimitri answered truthfully. A tear ran down Lucas's cheek and he brushed it away quickly, "When I claimed the Irish Mob had stolen the money not me, your father saw right through my lie, even went as far as to prove it. He demanded me to tell the truth. That I could not do."
Lucas could feel his hands shaking and clasped them together to gain some self-control.
"So he didn't jump." Lucas whispered.
"He fought like a man and accepted his fate. Not before though he made me promise to look after you."
Lucas looked up at Dimitri in utter disbelief.
"Look after me?"
"Why do you think I let you live after you told me you cared for Jenny, or even after you brought her here with you?"
Lucas sat up straighter at that and looked at the door.
"Oh no no no my dear nephew don't even attempt it." Dimitri smiled sadly. "Georgina already has it handled I'm sure."
"Please don't hurt her!" Lucas suddenly begged. "Please she just wants her nephew safe!"
"He is safe!" Dimitri slammed his fist on his desk. "He is with his family where he belongs. With you and me! A Markov!"
"Just don't hurt Jenny!" Lucas begged once more.
"Please don't humiliate yourself nephew. It is sad on you. Of course she will not be harmed. If she is what you want then you will have her."
"Have her?" Lucas asked confused.
"I can see that you care deeply for the girl. You may have her if it pleases you."
"What's the catch?"
Dimitri met Lucas's eyes with a gleam of humor.
"You will remain a key part of this family, under me of course, and in return you may have Jenny."
Lucas looked down and scoffed.
"Have her? Jenny is her own person with her own life…"
"Jenny's death will be faked tonight. As far as the outside world is concerned, tonight she will die young and tragically."
"I thought you brought her here to use against Dan?" Lucas asked in shock.
"I did, until I saw how attached you were."
Lucas dropped his head ashamed. He had done this to Jenny. Her life was about to be turned upside down and all because he had fallen for with her.
He couldn't allow this to happen.
