"Carpals, Radius, Ilium, Humerus, Ribs Clavicle, Scapula, Cervical Vertebra, Mandible, Frontal, Temporal, Zygomatic," said Dana, as she closed the extended laser pen she had been using to point at each bone in the human body. Opposite her sat Sabrina and Kelsey, the yellow Ranger had a biology book open on her lap and was tracing each bone with her finger as Dana read them out loud.
"Perfect," Kelsey said, once Dana had reached the top. "You've named every bone in the human body three times."
"Someday you're going to make a great doctor," Sabrina praised.
"If I can afford medical school," Dana replied.
"Fair point," Sabrina nodded. "My mother and Uncle Tommy have been qualified for a few years now, and have amazing jobs complementary of their time at college, but they're still paying off their student loans."
"What do you want to do after all this is over, Kels?" Dana asked the yellow Ranger.
Surprised by the question, Kelsey shrugged and slouched in her seat. "I don't know," she replied. "Probably keep going in extreme sports, you know, mostly skating. I mean, it's not like anyone pays you go mountain climbing. But most of all, I'm looking forward to spending more time with my grandmother, her new hobby is skydiving, and she's got a standing invitation for me once I finish here at Lightspeed."
"What about you, Sabrina?" Dana asked the red head.
"My future is complicated," Sabrina replied, looking down at her hands. "I want to move back to Reefside, you know be with Hunter and my friends and family, live a normal life; but I know that's not on the cards. Taking it easy is not exactly something that I can endure for long periods at a time, there's never really been more than a few days to a week were I've had a day off, there's always something happening, and it always every time involves the Phoenix. She's not exactly the well-hidden of powers, you know?"
Dana and Kelsey exchanged looks, with the latter putting her arm around Sabrina for moral support and comfort.
"I'm sure it's not always going to be like this, Sabrina," Dana said. "Things will calm down, eventually.
"Yeah, after either a) I've killed while in battle, or b) passed the Phoenix curse on," Sabrina replied.
"Is it genetic?" Kelsey asked.
"I'm the first and only Phoenix guardian," Sabrina said. "So I don't know. I don't think I could stand myself if I pass it on to my child."
"But even if you do, that child will have something you didn't," Dana said.
"What's that?" Sabrina asked, curiously.
"Someone who knows and understands the Phoenix," Dana explained. "Someone who can teach her to control it. You never had that, so everything you do with the Phoenix is a first, if and when it comes to your child, you and Hunter, will be there help. She won't be alone."
Sabrina smiled at the idea and looked up at her friends. "Thanks guys," she whispered.
"No problem," Dana said as Kelsey squeezed Sabrina in a tight, one-armed hug. "So, what do you guys say?" she added, extending the laser pen again. "One more time?"
Sabrina and Kelsey exchange looks, and the yellow Ranger opened the biology book again. Unfortunately they were interrupted by the rapid beeping of the alarm, and indication that there was another monster on the loose.
"Let's do it," Kelsey said, heading for the door. Dana and Sabrina follow behind.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
Sabrina flinched as a firebomb hit a building causing it to disintegrate into nothing but a pile of smoldering ash and rubble. She felt the Phoenix expand inside her chest and the heat of the blaze washed over her, absorbing through her being and energizing her powers.
"Sabrina, can you take care of the little fires?" Carter asked, as the Humvee swerved to a halt in front of another building. It was still standing, but there were hundreds of little fires surrounding it with even more people around.
"Yeah, I got 'em," Sabrina called, jumping out of the back of the Humvee. She run off towards the bright flames without any more instructions. Behind her Carter ordered the fire horses to be ready, as he Joel and Chad run off to help the firemen, and Kelsey helped to move the rubble in order for the ambulances to get through.
Dana, meanwhile, began snooping around the stairs of the building, not that far from where Sabrina was absorbing the little fires. She seemed to have found something of interest, but also something that caused her great panic. "Sabrina, Sabrina! I need help!" the pink ranger shouted.
Startled, Sabrina rushed over and fell to her knees. She peered under the stone steps to see what had caused her friend to worry. A small child, no older than six or seven, was trapped beneath the underpass; she was still alive, but she couldn't move.
"Hold on, sweetie," Sabrina called, pulling aside fallen debris and rubble. A small fire is nearby, and the child is frantically trying to move away. "Hey, easy, don't move, OK? I'll get the fire. Don't worry about it."
"It burns," the child whimpered.
"I know. Look, I'm getting to it," said Sabrina, moving more debris and rubble aside. She squeezed herself into the small hole, barely aware of the flashes of a camera going off beside her; the press had always been on the scene during a monster attack, they'd always been ready to take pictures of the Lightspeed Rangers doing their jobs, it brought a sense of safety to the citizens of Mariner Bay to know that there were people out there willing to risk their lives for the city's protection.
Extending her hand, Sabrina felt the fire absorb through her palm. The fire disappeared and the child ceased her movements.
"There we go," said Sabrina, carefully removing a fallen graft of metal from the child's left side, and easing her out from under the steps.
Dana fell to her knees beside the red head, and examined the child.
"Will she be OK?" Sabrina asked.
"She'll be fine," Dana nodded. "I just have to get her to an ambulance."
"Ambulances are over there," Sabrina said, pointing behind them. "Come on, I'll help you get her out of here." Lifting the little girl, Sabrina put her into Dana's arms and then started to absorb more fires that had appeared they were sprouting up like wildfires. "You OK?"
"Yeah. Thanks, Sabrina," Dana said, rushing off to a nearby ambulance with the little girl.
Sabrina saluted playfully, and turned back to the burning building. She noted that no matter how many water horses were out, or how many fires she absorbed, there was still not enough man power - even with the Rangers - to save the remains.
The monster was obviously a lot more powerful, and therefore more dangerous than the last lot she and the Rangers had battled.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
"What you reading?" Dana asked as she and Sabrina walked away from the local library. The pink Ranger had just taken out another load of biology books to keep advancing her studies as a medical professions, Sabrina had only decided to tag along because Hunter was busy in the lab, and the rest of her friends had jobs to take care of. But she also enjoyed spending time with Dana.
"Did you know," Sabrina answered, showing her friend the front of her book. "I found it in the biology section while you were talking to that woman. I'm not the best at biology, but this is really cool."
"I thought you were good at science?" Dana asked. "I mean, your uncle as a PhD."
"Yeah, in dinosaur bones," Sabrina said. "I didn't think they were the same thing - hey, listen to this - Did you know that the hyoid bone in your throat is the only bone in your body not attached to any other."
"Actually, yeah, I did," Dana said with a teasing smile.
"I knew you did," Sabrina said, nudging her friend. "But I didn't. I didn't even know there was a bone in your throat; I thought it was all muscle."
Dana chuckled, and patted her friend's shoulder. "You've got a lot to learn," she said, looking down at her own books. She planned on reading these, and then returning to take out more. It was the only way she could keep her education from slipping, and working hard meant one step closer to medical school. The only daunting thing was the money.
"Hey, cheer up," said Sabrina, looking up from her book. "You'll find a way to get into Medical school."
"Yeah, by a miracle."
"You're such a downer."
"It's a downing situation."
"Is not. You just gotta think positive."
"You don't think positive of your future," Dana pointed out.
"Because, unlike you, I don't have one."
"That's not - Sabrina, look out!" Dana grabbed her friend's arm and pulled her backwards, out of the path of a white ostentatious limousine that had just pulled up to the curb.
Sabrina pressed her hand to her chest, and glared at the tainted black windows. "They could've at least beeped or something," she said, as the back door opened and an older woman, wearing a feather hat and boa, stepped out.
"Dana Mitchell and Sabrina Horizon," the woman cooed, walking towards the two Rangers. "Oh, darlings, let me look at you," she pulled them apart, and. "Oh, yes indeed, a little of this," she fluffed Sabrina's hair from her face, and waved her hands over Dana, her grin never faltering. "A little of that... Oh, I have outdone myself!"
"And who are you?" Dana asked.
"I am Koko Kashmere," the woman introduced. "I take the little common people and shoot them into the stars, and you, my lucky ladies, are going to be my new Glitz girls'."
"Glitz girl's?" Sabrina repeated. "You're not serious?"
"I am very serious, my darling," Koko said.
"I don't think so," Sabrina said, shaking her head. "I've never been one for... modelling, I'm not even with it when it comes to fashion."
"Yeah, and I don't even like having my picture taken," Dana added. "Besides, I have plans. I'm going to be a doctor."
"And we already have jobs," Sabrina added. "We're Power Rangers, and that doesn't cost anything."
"Really?" said Koko. "Well, if you do this one little fashion shoot for me, I promise I'll pay you double what you're making now. Dana, you could go to any medical school you want and Sabrina, you my dear, will have enough money to live as comfortable life as you please. You won't have to worry about the small things of life, and will truly be able to support those you care about."
"I- I..." Sabrina hesitated. "I swear I am not a model... I'm... I'm..."
"I'll take it!" Dana gushed, much to Sabrina's surprise.
"Excellent!" Koko said, laughing happily, "and you, Sabrina?" she added to the red head.
Sabrina looked from Koko to Dana. She wasn't a model. She hated fashion, and preferred the comforts of life rather than luxury. Fashion had always been something that she'd steered clear from and neither of her friends - both in Miami and California - had never been fashionaitas either.
"Sabrina, please?" Dana asked. It was clear that she didn't want to do the shoot alone, and would have preferred moral support and comfort from a friend. Plus, it was bringing her dreams of being a doctor one step closer.
"OK," Sabrina agreed, albeit cautiously. "What are a few pictures, right?"
"Brilliant!" Koko exclaimed, giddily. "Come now, dears, come meet your new work stations." She ushered them both into the limo, and away they sped from the library.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
The limo stopped outside a studio.
Sabrina climbed cautiously out of the car, and stared up at the overbearing building. She felt nervous - really nervous, and her stomach flipped over several times as she followed Koko into the main hall, passed several people. all of whom looked like professional models and photographers, and through a side door.
"Now, this is how it's going to be, my darlings," Koko said. "Dana, you have a certain girlish cuteness, about you. The kind that says 'Protect me'. Your first shoot will take place here," she gestured to the massive stage and around the room. "This is your photographer, Matthew Osborne, he's one of the top, and I only use the best."
Dana smiled bashfully at the photographer as he looked her over. He muttered something under his breath and snapped his fingers, motioning for two women to join him. He ordered them to take Dana backstage and dress her up for her big shoot.
"As for you, my dear Miss Horizon," Koko said, as Dana was taken away. "I see you as the girl who would challenge someone to keep up with you. You're shoot will take place outside, on the soccer field. We have everything you need, including a full soccer kit, so there's no need to worry about such things."
"I'm very fussy with my soccer clothes," Sabrina pointed out.
"Oh, you'll simply love these," Koko promised. "They've been designed down to the stitching pattern, size, shape, colours everything. But there is one thing you must do for me, it is very important."
"What's that?" Sabrina asked.
"Remove that thing," Koko said, pointing at the morpher on Sabrina's wrist.
"But what if I need it?" Sabrina asked. "What if the other Rangers need me?"
"There is more than just you, is there not?"
"Well, yes, but -"
"Everything will be fine, Sabrina," Koko said. "Remove it. It clashes, and I do not approve of clashes."
Sabrina sighed, grudgingly, and removed the morpher from her wrist. She set it down beside her clothes and changed quickly into the soccer uniform that had been presented to her. They were blue in colour, with two scarlet stripes down the shoulders of the shirt, and the sides of the shorts. They also had her name stitched across the back with a number 12 underneath.
Once she was ready, Sabrina returned to the soccer field to find Koko standing beside a tall woman with glasses and a shoulder-length blonde hair. She was holding a camera in one hand and was staring at her as she strode across the field.
"Sabrina, this is Annie Leibovitz," Koko introduced. "She's going to be your photographer. Now, places everybody!"
Sabrina stopped the soccer ball that had been kicked towards her with her foot, she batted it around the field for a while, trying her hardest to block out the snapping of the camera as Annie followed her. She was used to having her picture taken when she was doing her ranger duties, and she'd always used to have photos done while she had been on the Miami dolphin's team, but that had been when she was a soccer player, not a model.
Shaking her head, Sabrina kicked the ball towards the goal that had been set up. She tried to get into the mindset she usually played in when she was messing around with Connor on the field back in Reefside, she missed it. She missed just getting up every morning and calling Connor to come over and play. The front yard outside of her uncle's house was big enough for them to kick the ball around, and it was secluded from the outside world.
"Nice shot, Sabrina, now pick up the ball and show me some attitude," Annie said. Koko had long since gone to check on Dana, leaving the red head in the capable hands of her photographer. Sabrina kicked the ball up into the air, and flinched as Annie snapped a shot of her; she caught the ball with both hands and shot the camera a glare. Annie laughed lightly and declared the shot perfection. "Now, how about some shots here on the bleachers."
A stunts man held his hand out for Sabrina, while the red head stared at him. Was he serious? Didn't he think that she couldn't climb a set of bleachers by herself? Ignoring his offered help, Sabrina climbed to the centre of the bleachers and sat down. She put both legs on the bleacher in front of her, and set the ball at her feet, holding it firmly in place. She then crossed her arms over the other and smiled down at Annie.
"Lovely, Sabrina, very natural," Annie called.
In the next shot, Sabrina knelt sideways on the bleachers with the soccer ball on her lap, while she rested on it with her arms. She shot Annie another fierce look. After a while she seemed to get into having her pictures taken and, despite having originally been against the idea, she had to admit it was a lot of fun.
"We have enough film for one more picture," Annie announced towards the end of the shoot. "The set is your's, Sabrina, give me your best shot."
Sabrina looked thoughtful. Annie had said that they had some amazing footage already, but she wanted to finish with a blast. The only move she had never actually attempted both on and off the field was a bicycle kick, mostly because it looked complicated. She had seen thousands of soccer players perform the kick flawlessly, and Connor had been one of them, but she'd never attempted the trick herself.
"I have an idea," Sabrina said. "But it's tricky, and I could get hurt if it's not executed right."
"Not a problem," Annie said. "We'll get the safety mat out." She snapped her fingers and four men carried a thick blue mat out onto the field. "How's that?"
Sabrina forced a tense smile. She tossed the soccer ball into the air, and walked cautiously over to the mat. "OK," she muttered, taking a deep breath and dropping the ball to the ground. "You can do this, Sabrina, it's just one shot, and even if it doesn't come out as your best, at least you tried."
Kicking the ball back and forth, Sabrina eventually dug her foot under the sphere and vaulted it into the air. As the black and white ball came back down, she jumped up to meet it, leaned her body back and connected her foot with the underside of the rubber sphere.
There was a snap of the camera, and next second Sabrina landed with a thump on the safety mat.
"That was beautiful, Sabrina," Annie praised, as the stunt men helped the red head off of the mat. "We've got some amazing shots, and that last one was terrific. Now, there are a few other sports that I wish to snap of you, you don't mind doing collaboration photo's do you?"
"Huh?" Sabrina asked, confused.
"Posing with a parter, Jack here is our number 1 male model," Annie said, pointing at a tall male with a short black hair standing at the side of the field. He was wearing a similar outfit to Sabrina, except it was black and white rather than blue and scarlet.
Sabrina bit her lip and turned back to Annie. "I don't mind," she said, "but my boyfriend might."
"It's all harmless," Annie said. "I just want a few basic self-defense shots."
"Can't I do those alone?"
"We'll see what happens, maybe we'll do both," Annie said. "Now, come and change, while I retrieve more film."
Annie led Sabrina off the set, and back into the changing room. Sabrina found another set of clothes waiting for her, and she sighed as she changed into them. While she was having fun, she wasn't used to changing clothes so often in one day.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
At the end of the day, after some snapshots of Sabrina posing on skate's, with a bike and the self-defense shots with Jack, plus the touch-ups between shots, Sabrina and Dana were relieved to make it back to the Aqua base.
"Ah, I'm wiped," Sabrina moaned as she collapsed onto the sofa inside Dana and Kelsey's quarters, "and my body aches."
"Why does your body ache?" Dana asked, falling down onto the seat opposite the red head. "It was just a few pictures."
"Yeah, for you," said Sabrina. "They take the term 'action girl' to a whole new level."
Dana chuckled and looked up as the door slid open to reveal Kelsey to be on the other side. She looked bruised and dirty, her outfit was torn in many places, and she did not look happy.
"There you are," Kelsey said, almost relieved. "Are you OK?"
"What happened to you?" Sabrina asked, lifting her head and staring at Kelsey. "You look like you've been dragged through a bush backwards."
"Hold that thought," Kelsey said, lifting her communicator to her lips. "Hey, guys, I found them. You can tell Bradley to call off the search party, she's safe and back."
"Search party?" Sabrina repeated. "What search party?"
"Your search party," Kelsey said.
"Mine?"
"Hunter's been going crazy," Kelsey said. "No one has been able to get in contact with either of you all day. Do you have any idea just how worried we've all been?"
Sabrina gasped and looked down at her wrist. She'd clean forgotten about her morpher, having had to take it off during her shoot. "Oh man," she groaned. "We are so sorry."
"Sorry doesn't cut it," Kelsey said. "Hunter was ready to call your friends because we were sure that you'd been taken again, and Dana, just - where did you both run off to? And why are you both wearing that much makeup?"
"Kels, we've had the most amazing day!" Dana gushed, jumping to her feet. "You know that big fashion magazine?"
"What magazine?" Kelsey asked.
"We're the new Glitz girl's!" Dana said, pointing from herself to Sabrina, and jumping excitedly on the spot. "We got to spend the day doing photo shoots and everything!"
"So, wait a minute, you're telling me that you blew off your duties as Rangers to pose for a fashion magazine?" Kelsey asked. "That demon returned, we tried to call but I assume you were too busy..." she pulled the pink boa from around Dana's neck and dropped it to the floor.
Dana sighed and sank back into her sofa. "Oh, man, I feel so..." she trailed off, unable to put her feelings into words.
"Stupid?" Kelsey suggested.
Dana nodded.
"We were worried about you," Kelsey said. "We thought you guys had been ambushed and defeated - or worse! I mean, isn't this the reason you went all the way to Reefside to recruit Sabrina, Dana? To fight the demons?"
"Yeah," Dana confirmed. "You know we wouldn't intentionally abandon you guys, right?" she asked looking from Kelsey to Sabrina.
Sabrina nodded and sat up, despite her body's protests. "Kels, we're sorry," she apologized. "Technically, I didn't really want this whole fashion job, but it was too good an opportunity to pass up, and it hinged on both Dana and I signing a contract. We're trying to pay for Dana's medical school, nothing more and nothing less. We're not getting paid enough for her to be able to afford to go on her own, and this way..." she sighed as she realized she was rambling. "Look, we're sorry, we both feel really bad. Is there any way we can make it up to?"
"Well, I guess I could forgive you," Kelsey said, folding her arms. "Once."
Sabrina grinned and jumped to her feet. She wrapped her arms around Kelsey and, despite the dirt and grime, looked thankful to have her friend back on her side.
Dana, however, seemed reluctant to hug the dirty yellow Ranger, but didn't have much of a choice as she threw herself down onto the blonde, bringing and already sore Sabrina with her.
"Ow," Sabrina groaned. "If I wasn't hurting before, I definitely am now," she said, playfully punching Kelsey in the shoulder.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
While Kelsey and the others seemed to accept Sabrina and Dana's sincere apologies, Hunter was a little more difficult. He was thankful that she was alive and well, and was actually Sabrina as opposed to being the Phoenix, but he was still unhappy that she had gone off on her own, and without alerting anyone to where she was going.
After a minor argument about being kept on a leash, Sabrina and Hunter had made up, with the former promising to not go off alone - although she had technically been with Dana - or if she was going to be gone for a while she would call him and let him know what was going on.
The morning after the argument, Sabrina had dropped by the lab to let him know that she was heading to the carnival with Dana and Kelsey - it was part of the apology she and Dana had made with the yellow Ranger in order for her to forgive them for their mistake during the last battle. After promising to call if she was going to be late, Sabrina hurried off to meet her friends.
The day had been spent more or less blowing off steam. Sabrina had challenged Kelsey and Dana to a round on the go-karts, with Kelsey winning first place, and then chasing one another on the bumper cars. Sabrina had walked away with more bruises than she had done during her photo shoot a few days ago.
Dana had then won several stuffed animals on the stalls, with Kelsey and Sabrina adding to the toys on the claw and dozer machines. At the end of the day, all three girls left the park in high spirits, yellow, pink and red balloons in hand; along with the stuffed animals they had one.
"I can't believe they had the Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger plushies," Sabrina gushed, looking down at the seven dolls in her arms. "I've been looking for these since I was a kid, and having actually met the original Rangers. They even had the green ranger!"
"Wait, you've met them?" Kelsey asked.
"How?"
"Well, technically, they're my biological family," Sabrina said. "I have each of them on speed dial. Even Uncle Billy and he doesn't even live on Earth anymore. But when I was a Ninja Ranger, I went back in time by ten years and met them all. It was a strange experience, but it was needed too."
"Wow," Kelsey said, taking the green plushie from her friend and examining it. "Can I have him?"
"No way!" Sabrina exclaimed. "That's my uncle!"
"Your uncle Tommy?"
"Uh-huh," Sabrina nodded, taking back the doll. "He started off as the evil green Ranger, then lost his powers and became the white Ranger. He's my Ranger hero."
Kelsey smiled and looked around at Dana as she gasped. "What is it?" she asked.
"It's us," Dana said, rushing towards a newsstand and taking a magazine from the centre shelf. "Sabrina, look, it is us."
Sabrina looked up from her plushies and peered over Dana's shoulder as she turned the pages of the Magazine. The first pages were of the pink Ranger, with the title "New Glitz Glamour Girl Goes Global!" and has a collection of pictures of Dana posing around with different backgrounds and outfits; it's mostly a collection of single-page photos interspersed with descriptions of the designs she's wearing and small personal facts about what she likes to do in her spare time, her dreams and such.
Dana keeps flipping through the pages, showing herself posing in several outfits - and four swimsuits. The final picture shows Dana standing on a balcony, looking out over the skyline of New York, and wearing a pale pink dress complete with a shawl that was wavering in the wind.
Turning the page again, Dana finds Sabrina's shoot titled "Can You Keep Up?", it's a collection of the red head playing various sports, kicking around a soccer ball, posing on a pair of in-line skates, seated on a competitive-style bicycle, and even going through some self-defence practices.
"Who's that?" Kelsey asked pointing at the man Sabrina is sparring with.
"Jack," Sabrina answered. "I didn't want to be in a shot with him, but Annie insisted."
"Who?"
"My photographer," Sabrina answered, as Dana turned to the last page. It was the last photo of Sabrina's shoot and it was the bicycle kick. Sabrina smiled at the perfection of the kick, and almost forgot that she and nearly hurt herself while executing it.
From the corner of her eye, Dana notices the news guy watching them curiously. The grin on his face tells her that he recognises her, and before she can react he is at her side.
"Hey, aren't you the new Glitz girls?" he asked, pointing from Dana to Sabrina. "You are - Hey, everyone, it's the Glitz girls!" he shouts, drawing the attention of everyone on the streets.
Sabrina squeaks as she is bustled about by the growing crowd. Her arm slipped from Kelsey's and she was herded towards Dana as people start asking for her autograph, her plushies slip from her arms and onto the floor, but people seem to make sure not to stand on them, one kid even picks them up and shows them to his mother.
"Mom, Mom, can I have them?" he asks.
"No, Charlie, they're not yours," his mother said, while asking Sabrina for her autograph.
"No, no, I couldn't," Dana said, exchanging a fruitful look with Sabrina. She sighed and takes a pen from an expectant passer-by. "OK, maybe just one," she said, signing the first book she could reach.
Sabrina smiled patiently at the young boy's mother, and signed her book. Her plushies have been picked up and placed on the newsstand behind her, and although she is worried that she may lose them, she can't help but succumb to the insistent crowd and starts signing books along with Dana.
In the midst of it all, a phone rings. It takes a brief minute before Sabrina realises that it is hers. "Hello?" she said, finally answering the call.
"Have you seen it?" Koko's voice chimed. "Darlings, you're both simply smashing! Your issues are flying off the shelves all over Blue Bay Harbour, Reefside and Mariner Bay. The phones have been ringing off the hook all day, everyone wants to meet you. I've already booked you both for the big fall fashion show, so you must be at your fittings in one hour - I've sent the car, so all you both have to do is get on in and we'll get underway."
"Oh, Sabrina, look," Dana said as a black limo pulled to a halt in front of the growing crowd.
"A limo," Sabrina breathed in amazement. "Me first!" she cried, pushing her way through the crowd and ripping over the back door. She laughed as Dana collided with her, almost knocking her into the interior. The second they are both inside, the doors close and the car pulls off down the street.
"Dana, Sabrina!" Kelsey called, but her friends are long gone before they even realize she was there.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
It had been two weeks since Dana and Sabrina had signed their contracts with Koko, and by far it had been an amazing two weeks. While the monster attacks on Mariner Bay had been quiet, and the rest of the Rangers had been suspicious about the demons motives, Sabrina and Dana had been more than busy.
There had been several fashion shoots in the last two weeks, more than either girl could count. If they were in the studio doing shoots, then they were on walkways and posing for hundreds of people, all of which were screaming their names and wanting autographs.
The aqua base was the same. During breakfast one morning, Dana tried to get something to eat with the rest of the team and was instantly swarmed by many of the works, all clamouring around her at the door and demanding her signature.
Meanwhile, Sabrina had avoided the mess hall at all costs, she knew the pressure of walking in there during the day and decided that she'd take Hunter up on his offer and go see him at the lab. She hadn't seen him for so long that she had started to miss him. On her way to his lab, her cell phone rang.
"No, I don't care of their bodysuit hasn't arrived yet," Sabrina said as she entered the lab. She smiled at Hunter, who seemed surprised at the sight of her. Rather than easy-going, playful girl he had come to know and love, he was seeing another cheerleader-type girl with styled hair, designer clothes, painted nails and heels. He was used to these types of girls, having met a few of them before he had met Sabrina, they had flirted with him, but they weren't his type.
"What's -?" Hunter started, but Sabrina cut him off by holding up her hand. Her voice turned fierce as she continued to argue with the person on the other side of her phone.
"Well, tough. The photo-shoot is tomorrow and I need to make sure the bodysuit fits! I don't care how you get it done, just do it!" Sabrina snapped, she closed her phone before anymore protests could pour from the poor soul's mouth and pushed herself up onto her toes to kiss Hunter's cheek. "Oh, darling, how nice to see you. I'm so sorry I haven't had time to spend with you, all this training, and fittings, not to mention the shoots and the appearances... oh, my, look at the time," she gasped, checking the clock on her phone. "I must be going. I'll arrange a time to see you tonight, hmmm? Goodbye, my darling!" she called, as she quickly left the lab.
Hunter watched her go, stunned by the encounter.
Still staring after his rapidly changing girlfriend, Hunter jumped as his phone jingled from his lab pocket. He fished it out and, after checking the call ID, answered it.
"Dude, what time are you getting here?" Dustin asked. "Tori's getting angsty!"
"I am not!" Tori shouted from a distant. Hunter could almost imagine her standing behind Dustin, glaring.
"Ooh. If looks could kill," the Earth Ninja muttered. "But seriously, dude, what time do you expect you and Sabrina to be arriving?"
"I hate to be the bearer of bad news, dude," Hunter replied. "But I'll be there, Sabrina on the other... well; she just kinda blew us off."
"Blew us off?"
"Who blew us off?" Tori asked.
"Hunter says Sabrina did."
"What do you mean she blew us off?" Tori asked. There was a commotion down the line, and suddenly Tori sounded much clearer. "Hunter, what the hell is going on?"
"She can't make it," Hunter answered. "Something about a photo-shoot."
"Hunter, do you hear yourself? This is Sabrina we're talking about," said Tori.
"I'm aware of that, Tor, but ever since she's signed that contract with Glitz..."
"I hate to say it," Dustin piped up. "But this isn't the Sabrina we all know and love. It's like she's forgotten everything she's learned about helping others, and seems to be only out for herself. Besides, I wasn't even aware she enjoyed being a model."
"She doesn't," Tori said. "Sabrina's never been one for wanting to be in front of the camera, you know that, all she's ever wanted is a quiet and normal life."
"Honestly, I think there is more to it than meets the eye," Hunter added. "She wouldn't turn all flay on us just because she's famous, would she?"
"I dunno, dude, people do some pretty indecent things when there's money involved," Dustin pointed out.
"But Sabrina's down-to-earth," Hunter defended. "She's always been down-to-earth. She knows what it's like to be famous, I mean, she's well-known in Miami because of her Soccer background, but she's never let that stop her before."
"And now she is known world-wide for being a supermodel," Dustin said. "I guess all we can really do is hope that she gets some sense knocked into her before it's too late."
Hunter and Tori sighed. Both of them wondering what had happened to Sabrina, and why she would agree to sign a modelling contract in the first place.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
The next morning Sabrina met Dana at the park. She was wearing a brand new pair of designer jogging bottoms, along with a scarlet training top. Her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail and her perfectly manicured nails tugged at the tendrils that framed the sides of her face.
"Urgh," Dana said, observing the mud-covered obstacle course. "They're not serious?"
"It is times like this that I love having the power to teleport," Sabrina said. She looked up as the others joined her, each of them taking their places at the starting line. Captain Mitchell stood on the sidelines, holding up a stop watch. He clicked the top and ordered for them to go.
Running alongside Dana, Sabrina jumped up and hooked her hand around the monkey bars on the climbing frame. She swung herself back and forth as she carried herself across, and dropped down at the end to check her nails. Behind her came Dana, stopping in the middle as she felt one of her own nails snap.
"Shoot!" the pink Ranger complained.
Reaching the bars, Sabrina yawned as she watched Kelsey and Joel scramble beneath them on her stomach. In her normal state of mind, Sabrina wouldn't have worried about the dirt, and actually enjoyed obstacle courses, but given her new fashion appearance, she rolled her eyes and flamed out. There was no way she was getting dirty for no reason. Meanwhile Dana shook her hand free of the mud trap, and jumped over the bars, knocking them all from their stilts.
"Careful, Sabrina," Carter said, holding the rope tightly in his hands as Sabrina climbed over the top and slid down to where he was standing. She teetered dangerously on her tip toes and fell forward towards the mud. Inches away from total disaster, Sabrina disappeared in a blaze of bright flames.
Dana sighed in relief as Sabrina disappeared, and held the rope firmly for Kelsey to start climbing. Reaching the top, the yellow Ranger pushed herself over the frame and started to climb down, only to fall from a great height as Dana let go of the rope to answer her cell phone.
Kelsey grunted and glowered angrily at Dana. She pushed herself to her feet and lunged for the pink Ranger, but stumbled backwards and tripped over her own two feet, landing with a face-first smash in the mud as Sabrina reappeared in front of her.
"That was a close one," Sabrina said, checking herself over for any last damage. "Who's on the phone?" she added to Dana.
"They're saying we can't afford the top hairdressers for this afternoon," Dana said, her hand covering the mouthpiece.
"But it's the fall fashion show," Sabrina protested. "Our fans expect us to look fabulous!"
Dana nodded in agreement and snapped the cell phone shut, just as Kelsey stormed towards them. "What now?" the pink Ranger sighed as Kelsey growled.
"Your hair? That's what you dropped me for?" Kelsey demanded.
"Just because I care about the way I look - unlike some people," Dana said, gesturing to the head-to-toe mud makeover Kelsey had just received.
"All right, what's going on here?" Captain Mitchell asked, walking over with the other Rangers.
"The supermodel's here thinks her hair is more important than training," Kelsey said.
"Why don't you just admit that you're jealous?" Dana asked.
"Jealous?" Kelsey repeated. "I think this whole thing has gone straight to your heads."
Sabrina rolled her eyes. "Now you're just being ridiculous, Kels," she said, looking up excitedly as a familiar beep caught her attention. The black limo that had been given to her and Dana for shows had arrived outside the park.
"Sorry, gotta go," Dana said, brushing past Kelsey, making sure to not get too close.
The yellow Ranger growled and lunged for Dana, but was held back as Chad caught her around the shoulders. In the meantime, Sabrina had abandoned her friends and blasted across the park to the car. She sighed as she waited for the driver to open the door and then looked around for Dana.
"Dana, come on," Sabrina called, spotting the pink Ranger in conversation with Carter. The red Ranger looked uneasy about something, and Dana looked mildly impatient. "We're going to be late."
Carter looked up and watched as Sabrina scrambled into the back of the car, and Dana was close behind her. He now understood how Hunter had felt yesterday after Sabrina had blown him off. While he and Dana weren't a couple, he still felt for her deeply, and having her blow him off was something that hurt.
As the car pulled away from the park, Dana observed her reflection in the mirror. She brushed her hair from her face, and caught sight of her morpher in the reflection. What was she doing inside this car while her friends were out there training for the next monster fight, or the monster that Carter had warned her was still on the loose?
"You're having second thoughts too, huh?" Sabrina asked in a hushed voice. She was sitting in the corner of the limo, her legs hugged up to her chest and her head resting on the tops of her knees.
"Uh-huh," Dana nodded, her eyes dropping sadly. "You know, I wanted nothing more than to go to med school, but now all I feel like I am doing is selling everything I am out just because someone promised me enough money to do so. You saw Kelsey; it was like she was ready to kill us back there..."
"She would've killed us," Sabrina corrected. "Hunter's right. I have changed - we've changed - we're completely different people now. I haven't practised properly in the last two weeks, I've even blown Hunter, Tori and Dustin off more than once, and that's not like me. I love my friends; I love Hunter, so why don't I want to be with them? I should want to be with them, and I do, but..."
"We've been so busy with the magazine," Dana said. "I know how you feel. I did all this for medical school, but I haven't looked at a medical book in two week."
"This used to be fun, but now it's all go-go-go all the time," Sabrina said. "I hate having to be so careful with our hair, our outfits, and our nails. Honestly, part of me wishes that I hadn't flamed out back there, that if I just let myself land in the mud then everything would be OK."
"I know," Dana agreed. "We used to have a good time training with others, and getting dirty because we were paid to do it."
Sabrina sighed sadly. "Let's make a deal," she said, straightening up and turning to Dana. "Tonight, and from now on, if our morphers go off, we answer. No matter what. Even if... even if it breaks our contract. Our friends and the rest of the city comes first, deal?"
"Deal," Dana said, shaking hands with Sabrina. They even seal it with a pinkie promise.
"I did learn one thing," Sabrina said.
"And what's that?" Dana asked.
"That I don't miss being bugged for my autograph," Sabrina said, reminding Dana of her time as a Miami dolphin soccer player.

After several hours of being preened, Dana and Sabrina are ushered out of the studio and into another limousine. Koko is waiting for them; she greets them with kisses and hand gestures as the car sails around the city towards the venue where the fashion show is being hosted.
Sabrina admires the screaming fans as she gets out of the car, and even flinches as she hears a few cat calls and whistles. She glares at the crowd, feeling her normal self-rising to the surface. Clinging to Dana's hand, Sabrina follows her down the red carpet, only to stop dead in the centre as her morpher can be heard over the roar of the crowd.
The two girls exchange looks, and Dana lifts the communicator to her lips, prepared to answer the call.
"Your friends will be just fine without you, dear," Koko said, putting her hand onto of Dana's morpher and pushing it down.
"No, they won't," said Sabrina, shedding the scarlet shawl around her shoulders. "Look, we had a talk on the way to the studios, and we've come to the conclusion that this isn't who we want to be. We're not Glitz girls, and as fun as it has been these past few weeks, we've let a lot of people who have been counting on us, down. We've been cutting into our lives and our training schedules for you, and we can't do it anymore. Being a Ranger is more important, and it has to come first. We'll be by the office tomorrow to finalize our contracts. Dana, let's go."
Dana nodded, shed her own shawl, and took Sabrina's hand as the red head pulled her through the silent crowd, away from a slack-jawed Koko. They ran, as fast as their dresses and heels would allow them, and turned down into the first alley they could find.
"Ready?" Sabrina asked.
"Let's do it," Dana confirmed.
Sabrina nodded and flamed out.
They reappeared at the Aqua base, much to the surprise of those working.
"Dana, Sabrina, can I -?" a young recruit asked, rushing forward. He looked eager to be working in such close quarters to the two new Glitz girls'.
"Not now," Dana said, brushing past him. "Miss Fairweather, are our bikes ready?"
"As always," Angela replied. "But didn't you two have a fashion show to be attending?"
"There's been a change in plans," Sabrina said, rushing over to her Phoenix cycle. She kicked off her designer shoes, happy to be free of them, and held up her morpher. "Ready, Dana?"
"Right behind you," Dana said, reaching her own bike.
"Lightspeed Rescue!"

"V-Lancers!" Carter commanded. The others fell into step beside him, and fired their own weapons. The monster, Treevil laughed and caught the glowing sphere, before throwing it back from once it came.
"Look out!" a familiar voice shouted. Carter and the others gasped and looked up as Sabrina, fully morphed, jumped over them and kicked the glowing ember back at the monster, combining it with a series of fireballs.
Treevil grunted and crashed backwards into a metal container.
"Sabrina," Kelsey gasped, jumping to her feet. "Wait, where's Dana?"
"You didn't think I'd let you guys have all the fun, did you?" Dana asked, arriving on her bike. She fired her blaster at the monster who had made it back to his feet, and sent him crashing to the ground again. With the monster down for a second time, the team regrouped.
Kelsey looked between her two friends, and smiled beneath her helmet. "Does this mean you're done modelling?" she asked.
"Our modelling days are over," Dana confirmed.
"That's great to hear," Kelsey grinned, throwing herself at her friends. Squeezing them tightly to the point of near suffocation.
Making it back to his feet, Treevil growled and stormed towards the now fully energized Ranger team. "I hate to break up this fuzzy moment," he said. "But I'm not done here."
"You're more than done," Sabrina said, summoning her V-Lancer.
"Fire!" Dana said, following her lead and firing her V-Lancer into the air. Sabrina and the others followed suit, bringing a second energy ball down on top of the monster. It consumes the monster and causes him to explode.
The feeling of success is short lived as the monster returns, bigger than ever before.
"Lightspeed Megazord, online!" Dana called. "Transformation complete!" she added as the individual Zords combined to form one giant fighting machine.
"You don't scare me," Treevil bellowed.
"Foolish demon," Sabrina said, deflecting a blow to the chest with the Megazord arm. Undeterred by her actions, Treevil struck the ground with his sword - a weapon he had grown out of his own arm - and opened a fissure underneath the Megazord.
"Hold on!" Carter shouted as the Megazord gave out.
Treevil laughed and thundered towards the fallen Rangers. He reached down to grab them, but was knocked off guard as the ladder arms of the Megazord shot out of the ground, grabbed him around the waist and hoisted themselves out of the hole.
"Gotcha!" Dana said, swinging the Megazord around and letting go of Treevil. He grunted as he was flung through the air and crashed into the side of a mountain on the outskirts of town.
"I think it's time for you branch out," Sabrina said, pushing forward on her controls. She delivered several punches to Treevil's body, before summoning her Phoenix Zord. "Phoenix Launcher, activated."
"FIRE!" the other rangers yelled. Sabrina pulled back on the trigger and fired a bright ember of fire, shaped into the body of a phoenix at the monster. His whole body ignited as the spirit swept through him, causing him to explode.

Sabrina groaned as she jumped down from Hunter's bike outside the Glitz office. In the Humvee with Kelsey was Dana, both of them had agreed yesterday to come and finalize their contracts with Koko, but neither one of them seemed ready to face the music.
"Get it over with," Hunter said. "I'll be here when you come out."
"Promise you're not going to run off and find someone who is less... Glitzy?" Sabrina asked.
Hunter chuckled and kissed her tenderly. "Glitz girls are not my type," he said. Sabrina whined as he pulled away.
"Sabrina, you ready?" Dana called from the Humvee.
"I suppose," Sabrina grumbled, hurrying over to her friend. The two linked arms and walked into the office, taking the elevator to the floor of Koko's office, and taking a deep breath as they stepped inside.
Koko sat at her desk, and she did not look pleased.
"Girls', I cannot believe you'd abandon me in my hour of need," Koko said, brushing aside the many papers on her desk, "and you disappointed so many people. They were looking forward to the show, but nevertheless, they still want you. After you announced that you were Rangers..." she gasped, waved her hands excitedly in the air. "When the monster grew, we had to evacuate the hall, so we saw the battle. To be honest with you, my dears, I believe it is Glitz that owes you both an apology."
Sabrina frowned and exchanged an unsure look with Dana. "They do?" she asked, cautiously.
"Yes, yes, we do," Koko said, nodding rapidly. "I know you both came here to discuss breaking your contracts, but I have a counter-proposal for you. You have one shoot each left on your contracts, and I am willing to allow you to direct it. Our readers are clamouring for an insight into the real Dana and Sabrina, and we'd be honoured if you'd let us in."
Dana bit her lip. The idea of directing her own photo-shoot hadn't been something she'd ever considered, not to mention the fact that the real her was about being a doctor. Did the people really want to see that? As for Sabrina, the real Sabrina Horizon was fighting and internal battle with a mythical creature - the people would never understand her if she opened up about being the Phoenix, an evil that wanted to wipe out the entire world, including the demons and humans, not to mention the fact that they lived at the Aqua base. Would Captain Mitchell approve of them bringing a photo crew down into the base?
"Could you give us a bit of time?" Dana asked. "We need to make a few calls, just to be sure that we're allowed to do this. How much advance time do you need?"
"We need, at least, a three hour warning," Koko replied.
Dana glanced at Sabrina, and nodded. "We'll get back to you," she said, pulling the red head from the room. They rush back downstairs to where Hunter and Kelsey are waiting, and explain the proposal to them. Hunter seems wary, and Sabrina can't blame him, letting a photo crew into the Aqua base could risk a few sensitive area and projects being shown worldwide; but Kelsey is eager to end the contracts and prompts Dana to call her father and ask.
"I'm sure with a warning," Hunter said, "Angela and Captain Mitchell can hide away some of the more sensitive things, and if it means getting you two out of your contracts, then..." he trailed off with a shrug.
"Let's get back to the base," Dana said. "I'd prefer asking my dad in person.
"Agreed," Sabrina nodded, climbing onto the back of Hunter. She clipped her helmet into place and wrapped her arms around his waist. The bike rumbled to life beneath her, and the next second the wind was whipping her air behind her as Hunter sped off back towards the base - Kelsey and Dana following behind.
~*The Phoenix Series*~
Tori grinned as Sabrina walked into the Storm Charges carrying the latest copy of the Glitz magazine. It had been three days since the very last photo-shoot that she and Dana had had the privilege of directing themselves, and the issues was ready for public view.
"There is our supermodel," the water ninja teased, grabbing a notepad and pen. "Can I have your autograph?"
"No," Sabrina said, jumping up onto the front counter.
"Ooh, what a grouch," Tori said. "Let's see how the final shot turned out," she snatched the magazine from her friend and showed it to Marah who had wandered over. "You know, thanks to your short rise to fame, this place has been getting so many customers. People want to show where the famous supermodel Sabrina Horizon shops."
Sabrina rolled her eyes and looked down at the Magazine. The front cover showed her and Dana posing with Kelsey and the rest of the Rangers outside the entrance to the Aqua base, both girls were wearing their orange Lightspeed jackets, and had their arms around Kelsey as they smiled at the camera.
"No designer clothes this time?" Marah asked.
"Nope. They wanted to see the real us," Sabrina said, "and the real me isn't a fashion model. The real me enjoys getting dirty while training, the real me doesn't care about her hair or appearance, she cares about doing what is right and righting what is wrong. I'm a Power Ranger, a tomboy, I love rolling around in the mud when I'm training, and not having to worry about my hair getting wet when it rains."
Tori smiled and nudged her friend lightly. It was nice to hear Sabrina talking about herself in way that made her seem real, and not superficial. "That's a nice shot," she said, pointing at an image of Sabrina and Dana in the mess hall with the other Rangers. The camera had caught Kelsey reaching across the table and smushing an ice cream cone into Sabrina's face, covering the red-head in chocolate ice cream.
"It's a natural shot," Marah commented.
"It was cold too," Sabrina said, remembering the sneezing fit she had had after wiping the ice cream away.
"I thought you couldn't eat ice cream?" Dustin asked as he joined them. "You know, being intolerant to lactose and everything."
"Lactose free ice cream," Sabrina smiled, hugging the Earth Ninja. She'd missed him in the last few weeks, and already apologized profusely for flaking out on him. Other than Tori and Hunter, Dustin was her best friend, and had been the only other Ranger she'd been exceptionally close to during her time on the Ninja team.
Dustin chuckled and hugged her back. "It's good to have you back, Sabrina," he said, peering at the magazine from over Tori's shoulder. "Who knew Hunter could be such a softie," he added, spying a picture of Hunter and Sabrina sharing a tender kiss behind the scenes of the cycle track.
"I'm gonna tell him you said that," Sabrina said.
"You wouldn't?"
"I will," Sabrina said. "Not now, but when I get back tonight.
Dustin grumbled and walked away, muttering under his breath about needing to find somewhere to hide.
Tori continued to flip through the magazine, pointing out individual pictures of Dana and Sabrina at the Aqua base, the training courses, and even just hanging out with their friends. The page ended with both girls' sitting in the mud, after a rather intense training course with the other rangers, covered in sweat and grime, but still grinning like a couple of kids in a candy shop.
From there the focus of the magazine switched from Sabrina and Dana as rangers, to smaller montages of them as normal girls', trying to live their normal lives. One picture illustrated Dana's drive to study, with Kelsey and Carter helping her learn the muscular system again, with a comment from Dana printed underneath.
"My drive to be a doctor was strong even before I was a part of Lightspeed, but helping people is something I'm proud to have been able to do so often in my life already. I plan to go to medical school after my time here is over, but I'll always support Mariner Bay in any way I can." ~ Dana Mitchell.
"Aw, short and sweet," Marah said.
Flipping the page, Tori laughed at the three sets of pictures on the other side. One showed her, Marah, Dustin, Hunter and Sabrina messing around in the sea, the next showed Sabrina on a surfboard, and the last was Sabrina sitting in the surf, pushing her hair out of her face and splashing a laughing Hunter.
"Natural," Tori said. "Very natural - I also have a confession to make... that wave, the one that knocked you off your board?"
"Yeah, what about it?" Sabrina asked.
"It was me," Tori said.
Sabrina stared, slack-jawed at her best friend.
"It was payback for blowing us off," Tori said.
"I hate you," Sabrina grumbled. "But still, it's natural."
Tori grinned and traced her finger across the section that had been quoted out of Sabrina's interview, and printed along with her photos.
"Why do I do this? I do it for my wonderful friends, friends who are there to support me through everything. I do it for everyone in the city, people who make their homes and lives here, and finally I do it because someone has to stand against the demons and their desire to destroy, not only Mariner Bay, but the rest of the world. It's just bad luck that they have to deal with me." ~ Sabrina Horizon.
Marah smiled and looked up at the red head. "Spoken like a true hero," she said.
"And that's what I want to be known for," Sabrina replied. "A hero."
"So that's it, then?" Tori asked. "Your fashion days are over?"
"Yep," Sabrina said. "I have no desire to be back in front of the camera any time soon. Of course there are going to be publicity pictures, especially since the press are always on the scene when there is a monster, but I'm done being a supermodel."
"What about when you've finished with Lightspeed?" Marah asked. "What are you going to do then?"
Sabrina looked thoughtful. "I want to go home," she said, smiling. "I miss my mom and my uncle Tommy, and if I want, Connor has said that there is a position at his soccer camps for me. I'll get paid to do something I love, and I get to do it with one of my best friends, who could ask for more?"
"Sounds like you've got it all planned out," Tori said.
"Yep, but while we're on the topic," Sabrina added, reaching in her jacket pocket. She withdrew an envelope with her mother's name on it. "When are you going to Reefside next?" she asked Tori.
"Why?"
"I was hoping you could drop this in to my mother," Sabrina said. "It's a cheque from Koko. It's worth almost two hundred thousand dollars - I know, I was shocked too," she added at the look on both Marah and Tori's faces, "but Koko says I deserve it as I put in just as much work as she and Dana did, so it is only fair that I get to share the rewards too."
"Don't you want to cash it in?" Marah asked.
"What am I going to do with two hundred thousand dollars?" Sabrina asked. "In Reefside my Mom can keep it safe, it can be emergency money or something. I'll sleep better knowing that if I do ever need it, it will be there for me to fall back on."
Tori smiled and took the envelope; she slipped it into one of the many account books under the front desk and put it back. "I'll drop it off tomorrow," she promised.
"Thanks, Tor," Sabrina said, returning the smile.
"No problem," Tori said. "Besides, this just goes to prove that even the flakiest of heads can be hiding the most generous of hearts."
"Shut up," Sabrina grumbled, scrunching her nose up at her best friend.
