Chapter 12: The New Angel
During the final week of November, Renesmee found herself hanging out with Angel more than anyone else these days. Almost every weekend, when he wasn't on recon missions with Spike, Angel insisted on taking her to the lake or something at night. At first, Renesmee thought he just wanted to spend time with her like an uncle or something, but she was starting to question that theory. It was the last weekend of November when she decided to ask Angel about why he wanted to hang out so much. "Angel, I like hanging out with you, but why do you want to hang out all the time? It's taking my time away from my friends and Scorpius."
Angel sighed as they sat down by the lake under a tall oak tree. "I thought, since we don't spend that much time together, that you wouldn't mind some time with me." he said. Renesmee shrugged and started asking about his most recent findings about Moloch and Belial. "Nothing too much to tell," he told her. "Just that Moloch and Belial are using all of their army to find Ba'al and revive him, but they aren't having much luck."
"That's good." Renesmee said between drinks from her hip flask full of elk blood. "The longer it takes for them to find Ba'al, the longer we have to plan an attack on them." Angel smiled but she didn't. Something else was on her mind. "Um, Angel, can I confide in you?" His smile vanished and was replaced by a look of concern and nodded. "I've been having strange dreams , I don't talk about them because of how far-fetched they are, but I don't mind telling you about them because, well...they're actually about you."
"Me?" Angel said with a raised eyebrow. "May I ask why you're dreaming about me?"
Renesmee rubbed her temples in frustration. "That's just it!" she said. "I don't know why!" She took a deep breath and started to recount her dream. "The most recent dream I had was last night. It started out normal, just us at Hogwarts, but something was weird. It was after the last Quidditch match of the season. Gryffindor won and you were the first one to congratulate me. I ran up to you and we..." she paused because she blushed furiously. "We kissed."
Angel, who was in the process of drinking a packet of blood, stopped what he was doing and stared at her. "I know," she said, "it's really weird, right? I guess it's just a dream, though."
"Yeah," he said somewhat sadly, "it's just a dream. Maybe you should tell Harry or someone about your dreams. He might be able to tell you something about them. Or talk to Lorne. Sing a tune to him and he'll tell you what you need to know." Renesmee nodded and hugged him. "So, anything else you need to talk to me about? Hopefully something less embarrassing than what you just told me?"
"No, I think that's it," she said. "Besides the fact that I haven't seen Willow in a while. She hasn't been teaching class for a few days now. Wonder if she's trying to stay away from using too much magic or if she actually went over the edge and turned evil again." Renesmee's heart skipped a beat when Angel smiled at her and she blushed again. What's wrong?" She shook her head, said she had to do homework and went to the common room to think.

Renesmee paced the common room, which was empty with everyone outside or in the corridors, trying to figure everything out. "Okay, what on Earth is going on here?" she asked herself. "I have this odd dream about me kissing Angel, Angel wants to hang out all the time...what the...?" Then, like a ton of bricks, a thought hit her. Renesmee threw some Floo powder into the fireplace and yelled, "Lorne!" The orange flames turned green and Lorne appeared in the fireplace.
"What's up?" he said sitting down on the sofa. Renesmee answered him by singing a bar or two of a song she knew and the green empath demon frowned. "Whoa! This is a strange turn of events, babe. Your romantic destiny just changed course."
"What are you talking about?" Renesmee asked sitting down. "Please, tell me!"
"Uh, I'll let you know when I figure all this out," Lorne said scratching his chin. "All I can tell you is that you're in for one heck of a future." He stood up, stretched and went back to the fireplace. "I have to go. Catch ya on the flip side." Lorne threw some Floo powder down as soon as he got into the fireplace, called out, "Angel's bedroom!" and vanished in a roar of green flames leaving Renesmee alone to dwell on what the green demon said.
Renesmee found Harry talking to Professor McGonagall in the second-floor corridor near the Charms classroom. "We need to find a suitable substitute for Professor Rosenberg until she returns." McGonagall said. "Can you think of anyone who will be able to take his place?"
"I might have someone," said Harry, "but I don't know if he'll go for it." McGonagall asked him to do whatever he had to do and went back to her office. Harry saw Renesmee and smiled. "Hey, Nessie. Everything okay?" She shook her head and he frowned. "What's wrong?"
"I keep having weird dreams about Angel," Renesmee told him as they walked up the Grand Staircase to the third floor for Defense Against the Dark Arts class. "It starts out normal, but then we end up kissing every time. It makes me wonder if it's really a dream or if I'm having a premonition about my destiny."
Harry scratched the stubble of hair on his chin with his wand and said, "I don't think it's right to dwell on your dreams. I believe it's better if you simply cast them away." Renesmee knew what he meant: the Pensieve. She nodded, thanked him and went to class.

Buffy was prepared for today's lesson on werewolves. Over the past few weeks, the third year class had been learning about Red Caps, hinkypunks, grindylows, and most other creatures on the syllabus. They had covered vampires and various demons and the Seize-and-Pull Charm. "Please turn to page three-hundred and ninety-four." Buffy said as soon as the class brought out their books and sat down. Everyone turned to the correct page. "As you probably know, I've dealt with werewolves during my days as Slayer and so has Professor Lehane, Professor Rosenberg and your Muggle Studies teacher.
"The term 'werewolf' is actually two words combined. The Englo-Saxon term 'were' means man and combine it with wolf, you get wolf-man, man-wolf or the more proper term, 'werewolf." The Slayer paused for the class to copy what she said down and then continued. "Werewolves are powerful creatures, but there are a few ways to become a werewolf. The first way is to be bitten." She showed a photograph of a werewolf bite. "I know it's not pretty to look at, but that's how it looks. The second is if a werewolf mates with a mortal or wizard." Buffy put up a photograph of a half-breed baby. "I can't really think of the third way, so for homework, I want all of you to write an essay about the ways humans can be turned and list a few werewolves you have heard of or know about."
Since it was Wednesday, the third year class went to the Astronomy Tower at midnight to study the night sky with their telescopes and draw star charts. Angel was there with his own telescope, which Renesmee thought odd because he was not a student. Professor Sinistra, the Astronomy teacher since Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts, was still teaching. "Good evening, class," she said in a stern tone that reminded everyone of McGonagall. "Let us see how well you've been doing on your star charts. If you still need to add some constellations or stars that you missed, I will give you that opportunity tonight."
Renesmee set her telescope on its tripod, looked through it for a few moments then added a few stars to her chart. Angel was watching her carefully and gave her a smile. She shook her head and went back to work. "Everything okay?" Rose asked from her right.
"Yeah," Renesmee answered. "Beautiful night, don't you think?" Rose nodded and went to work on her chart as well. AFter class, Renesmee caught Angel at the door. "What are you doing?" He tried to look innocent but she shot him a glare. "Look, you've been acting weird for the past two weeks. What the heck is up with you?"
Angel attempted another innocent look and said, "Nothing's up. Like I said this afternoon, I just wanted to spend more time with you because of how busy I've been lately."
"Well, could you slow down a bit? Scorpius is beginning to get angry." Renesmee said darkly. "Not to mention you're really annoying me!" Angel scoffed and went downstairs toward his dungeon bedroom leaving Renesmee alone to her thoughts. On the way to Gryffindor Tower, she saw Spike and stopped him. "Can you tell me what's up with Angel? He's been acting weird the past two weeks."
Spike sighed and motioned for her to walk with him. "So, Captain Forehead's getting under your skin, eh?" he said. "Figured he'd do something sooner or later." Renesmee gave him a 'what-do-you-mean' look and he laughed. "You honestly don't get it, do you?" She shook her head. "Your vampire hero is in love with you!" Renesmee started to laugh hysterically. "What's so funny? He's in love with you!"
"That's the point!" she said. "He can't be in love with me! I'm too young for him."
Spike shook his head. "No, you're not. You may have the body of a thirteen-year-old, but you have the mind of an adult, Renesmee. Angel is in love with you! Don't you get it!" She laughed again. "Give it some time, love. It'll hit you sooner or later. Angel hasn't had a woman since Buffy and that went bad."
Renesmee stopped laughing, wiped her eyes and said, "Seriously, Spike, I don't think Angel and I would work out. Although it does explain what's been going on in my head lately."
Spike rolled his eyes and lit a cigarette. "Look, pet, Angel really does like you and, though I think he's way off his rocker, I can't help but agree with him." He lowered his voice and Renesmee had to use her vampire hearing to hear him. "I know you had a crush on both of us two years ago and, deep down, I know you still have one on Angel even though you are with Scorpius."
Renesmee tried to hide that part, but she couldn't help but feel that Spike was right. "You're wrong," she lied. "I don't like Angel that way." She was trying to convince herself that she didn't like Angel more than a friend, but she couldn't bring herself to do so. "I don't care what you say. Angel is my protector, not my lover." Spike gave her a 'I-don't-believe-you' look but she ignored it. "Spike, just trust me, okay? Angel and I won't work out."
"All right," he said finally, "but if you two get together and it actually does work out, I'm going to say I told you so." The last part was a warning but he smiled about it anyway. "You better go to your next class, then. I believe you have Divination, right?" Renesmee nodded. "Good. Talk to your aunt 'bout your dreams, then. She might help."
Renesmee was planning on talking to Alice about her dreams sometime soon and was wondering if she was going to teach the third year class today. Renesmee was a little surprised to see Alice waiting for the third years in the classroom as they sat down. "Good afternoon, third years," she said with a smile. "Professor Scamander asked me to switch to third years for the remainder of the year, so you'll have me." Renesmee grinned. "Professor Scamander told me that you have covered tea leaves and palmistry this year, so we're moving on to crystal gazing and dream interpretations." Lysander Scamander raised his hand. "Yes, Lysander?"
"Isn't dream interpretation for fourth year?" he asked.
"Normally, yes, but Luna told me to do it this year and do a revision of it next year." said Alice. "Now, you'll see a crytal ball on your tables. I want you and your partner to write down what you see. Use Unfogging the Future to help if you need it." The class went to work and only half the class could actually see something besides white fog inside it. Naturally, Renesmee actually saw something odd in the fog and raised her hand. "Yes, Renesmee. What do you see?"
Renesmee gazed into it once more, waving her hands over it and said, "I see two people talking...but I can't tell who they are." Rose wrote down what was said while Renesmee continued. "I also see a shadowy figure and someone ready to fight it..."
"Very good, Renesmee," said Alice happily. "You may actually see something good coming out of this!" Renesmee wasn't sure, but she smiled anyway. The class ended a half-hour later and Renesmee stayed afterward. "Is something wrong?"
"Yeah, I had this weird dream over the past few weeks," Renesmee said. "It was about Angel." Alice listened as she told of her dreams and, when she was finished, Renesmee asked, "What do you think?"
Alice's eyes drifted out of focus for a second and said, "I looked at your destiny and I definitely see Angel in it but I don't know if you two are going to be together romantically or not. Remember what imprinting means?" Renesmee nodded. "Well, that makes a conflict between Jacob and Angel. Both are in your destiny, but you decide your own destiny. Did you talk to Lorne?"
"Yeah, but he didn't tell me what it was about." Renesmee said. "I'm going to talk to him and tell him that I can handle the truth." Alice nodded and Renesmee walked out of the classroom. She passed Wesley Wyndham-Pryce on the staircase and stopped him. "Hi, Wesley," she said and he stopped. "Can I talk to you?"
"Of course," he said and followed her to the fifth floor landing. "What's wrong?" Renesmee told him her dream about Angel and he smiled. "Angel has talked about you a lot lately and he did tell me that he wanted to try a romantic relationship with you sometime."
Renesmee grimaced in disgust. "He's over three-hundred years old! He's even older than Grandpa Carlisle!" Wesley shrugged. "But, I guess since I am half-vampire, I could give it a shot...but what about Scorpius?"
"Oh, I'm sure Scorpius will find out soon enough." said Wesley. "By the way, I'll be your substitute Charms teacher until Professor Rosenberg returns." Renesmee thanked him and walked off to Transfiguration. "Oh, Renesmee!" She stopped and turned to face him. "I hate seeing Angel looking like a love-sick puppy, so if he asks you out, please say yes."
"All right," Renesmee said with a sigh. "I have a feeling Scorpius is going to break up with me anyway. I haven't really spent time with him since our last Hogsmeade visit." Wesley nodded and walked downstairs to the second floor and vanished from sight leaving Renesmee to go to her Transfiguration class.

Around eight o'clock that night, Renesmee went out for a hunt and a quick sweep on the grounds for patrol. She walked through an open clearing in the Forbidden Forest to search for some prey and heard someone talking...it sounded like Angel. "Angel?" she whispered and silently followed the voice. She saw Angel talking to Drusilla and hid behind a tree. "What in the heck is this about?" she muttered while drawing her wand just in case something were to happen.
"You don't want to do this, Dru," Angel said. He was posed in a defensive stance while Drusilla was crouched ready to pounce on him. "I don't want to fight you. You're not supposed to be here!"
Drusilla licked her lips, her crimson eyes flashed dangerously. "The stars are beautiful, aren't they?" she said dreamily. Angel rolled his eyes. "Daddy doesn't think so? Too bad, Angel. You won't see them after I'm done with you." Renesmee heard Darla's voice from behind them.
"Oh, Dru, please stop playing with your food." she said amused, then her tone changed to malice. "Just do it or I'll do it myself. You know what the Master told us to do." Renesmee's eyes widened. The Master? Did she mean the vampire who changed Darla back in the fifteenth century? That's impossible! Drusilla laughed and walked slowly to Angel. Renesmee watched as she raised a wand that looked like a claw. Shining black ropes tied Angel to the tree. "Now, do it!"
Drusilla's face morphed and she sank her fangs into Angel's neck. Renesmee covered her ears to block out his scream of agony. "Shush," Drusilla whispered and bit again, this time covering his mouth with her own hand. Angel's second scream was muffled and he started to pant when Drusilla finished. "I'll leave you to the pain, then. Goodbye, Daddy." Darla kissed him on the cheek and the two took off into the darkness.
Renesmee ran toward him and raised her wand and cut the ropes with a Severing Charm and caught Angel as he slumped forward, blood spilling from his neck. "Angel...we need to get you back to the castle," she whispered. Angel moaned but nodded slightly. "I'll carry you." Using very little of her strength, she flung him over her shoulder and carried him to the boat house entrance and to the dungeons to his bedroom. Once he was laying down, she raised her wand again. "Incarcerous!" The same shining black ropes Drusilla conjured wrapped themselves around him. Angel stared at her questioningly. "Angel, you know that Drusilla is a hybrid of three vampire types. The other two blood-types will be in your genes now." She went to the door and opened it.
"Renesmee..." he whispered. "I...love...you..." She went back to his bed and lightly touched his cheek to transmit her own feelings to him. "You...love..me?" he asked.
"Yes," she said, "I just hope you'll become mostly the vampire that my family is." Renesmee leaned down and kissed him on the cheek. "The change will hurt but I will be here for you. I'll even keep this a secret." Angel nodded and gave her a weak smile. "I'll see you tomorrow." She walked out the door and up to Gryffindor Tower.

Renesmee walked into the Gryffindor common room in a daze. Albus and James were in bed but Rose was still up. "What's wrong, Renesmee?" Rose asked when she saw Renesmee's face. "You look upset."
"Just confused," Renesmee answered her. Rose patted the sofa cushion beside her and Renesmee sat down. "Angel told me he loves me." Rose gasped and clapped a hand to her mouth. "I told him I love him back."
"You did WHAT?" Rose said in shock. "But...don't you love Scorpius?" Renesmee shrugged.
"I thought I did, but I don't know anymore." she said. "I just have this gut feeling that he's going to break up with me again. I'm just waiting for him to do it. Also, there's sometihng else I have to tell you. Angel was bitten by Drusilla, that black-haired vampire he made a member of the Order of Aurelius in the nineteenth century." Rose gasped again. "Darla was there, too, and said something about the Master. I think he's back."
"You don't mean the leader of the Order, do you?" said Rose in a whisper. Renesmee nodded. "But his bones were crushed, buried in consecrated dirt by Buffy and then buried when Sunnydale turned into a crater! How could he return now?"
"That's what I'm wondering," said Renesmee. "I don't know! Mr. Giles hasn't told me anything and neither Buffy nor Faith have had any prophetic dreams lately...not that I know of. Wesley might know, but I haven't asked him yet. They're all too busy worrying about Professor Rosenberg. Oh, that reminds me! Wesley is acting as the Charms teacher until Willow's back to normal." Rose smiled. "What are you grinning about now?"
Rose blushed and said, "I think he's cute."
"He's in his fifties!"
"I don't care!" Rose said. "He's still cute." Renesmee sighed and said she was going to bed. "I think you and Angel would make a great couple, by the way. Maybe you should have your grandfather check on him."
"I plan on it," Renesmee said as she went to the girls' dormitory. "Night, Rose." When she got into the dormitory, she saw her aunt Rosalie and her mother in there. "What are you two doing here?"
Rosalie, who was sitting on the edge of Renesmee's bed, glanced up at her and said, "Ron Weasley came back with the results of that piece of metal you found in the common room. He said it's not cursed but it is a shard from the Sword of Angels." Renesmee sighed in relief. "He put it in McGonagall's office with a bunch of protective enchantments on it so nobody, including the Molochs or any other vampire can steal it."
"That's good," Renesmee said, "but I would like to get some sleep." She looked at her mother and was instantly scared out of her mind. Bella's eyes were coal-black and deadly looking. "Mom, what's wrong? You look very angry."
Bella's tone was not very light and airy as it usually was. In fact, she sounded like the time Jake called Renesmee 'Nessie' or when he imprinted on her. "What's this I hear from your father about you being in love with Angel?" she hissed. Slightly taken aback, Renesmee hung her head. "You are thirteen, Renesmee! Thirteen!"
"That's right, Mom," she said, "I'm thirteen...as in teenager! You didn't have a problem when I told you about Scorpius and I dating!"
Bella stood up quickly and snarled, "He's your age! Of course, I'll be okay with it!"
"But you're not okay with Angel?" Renesmee said angrily. "What do you have against him?"
"He's three-hundred years old!" Bella growled in rage. "Older than your grandfather!" Renesmee grabbed her pajamas and school bag and headed for the door. "RENESMEE CARLIE CULLEN, I FORBID YOU TO DATE HIM!"
In her anger, Renesmee's brown eyes flashed red. "I don't care, Mother!" she snarled back. "You can't stop me! Maybe it's my destiny to be with him!" Bella's eyes turned back to gold and looked at her daughter in surprise. "That's right, I talked to Lorne and Aunt Alice! They both say that it's my destiny to be with him. He's changed. I saw Drusilla bite him. I think he'll be like us."
Without saying a word, Bella stormed out of the dormitory slamming the door behind her. Renesmee looked at Rosalie and said, "What's up with Mom? I know she's protective of me, but forbidding me to date Angel at all? That's not like her. She never had a problem with Angel before." Rosalie shrugged. "Maybe I'll talk to Jacob, see what he has to say. Hopefully he can talk sense into her." Rosalie smiled and exited the room leaving Renesmee to her thoughts. After ten or so minutes, the vampire-hybrid went to sleep.

As promised, Renesmee went to Angel's dungeon bedroom early the next morning before classes. Angel was still sleeping, though his arms twitched. Carlisle was there too. "How is he, Grandpa?" she asked.
"He's stable," said Carlisle quietly. "The venom Drusilla injected into him is slowly running its course. I believe he will be better in the next week or so." Renesmee nodded. "Did you want to talk to him? He's been asking for you."
Renesmee sat down in a wooden chair beside Angel and held his hand while Carlisle went into the corridor. "Hi, Angel," she said and squeezed his hand. "I kept my promise that I'd come, so here I am." she chuckled. "Mom yelled at me last night. Said that she forbids me to date you. I told her that I don't care how old you are. The truth is, I had a huge crush on you since my first year and I just didn't let it get to me."
"I...know...you...did..." Angel said, his voice sounded weak and feeble. "I had...a crush...on you...too." Renesmee smiled. "I'll...be...okay."
"I know you will." said Renesmee with a smile. "I'm going to talk to Grandpa, okay? After that, I have classes to go to, but I'll come back afterward." Angel gave a nod and she went to the corridor. "Can you tell what kind of newborn he'll be? Will he be like us or a Moloch?"
Carlisle shook his head. "There's a thirty-percent chance he'll be a Moloch, twenty-percent chance he'll be like us, and a ten-percent chance he'll be both. We'll find out when the venom finishes his job." Renesmee nodded. "Until then, we will have to wait. You get to class. If anything changes, I'll come and get you."
Renesmee thanked her grandfather and went to her her first class of the morning, which happened to be Mythology with Jasper.
