"I can't apologise enough, sweetheart. I'll have Kate go with you instead."
As Molly trudged along the aisles of countless flowers, none of which she could name, she couldn't help but sporadically huff and puff. Gardening had never been her forte; how could she possibly know a thing about flora? What was worse was that Kate was absolutely useless to anyone whose name was not Irene and so having her "help" with flower shopping could not have been any more counterproductive.
"Why don't we just grab a few of these and call it a day?" Kate suggested.
"Irene wanted pot plants," Molly told her. "Those are gardening tools… Oh, have a look over here. I think this will do."
"No, no. Wouldn't go with that if I were you."
And it was on the spur of the moment that Molly, oblivious to the fact that a pair of sparkling high heels were headed her direction, snapped, "I know what she likes!"
Kate was instantly overcome by a fit of giggles.
"Oh, darling." Molly spun around in surprise upon hearing none other than her beloved Irene. "Have you got a present for me?"
All the frustration, the uncertainty, having to tolerate Kate - it was all worth it for her. For Irene, Molly could do anything. "I do," she replied softly. "Bonsai."
