Mount de Luna High School ch 3

Chapter 3: a semi-normal day for Shadow and new friends for Jack?

Shadow couldn't get a certain song out of her head, it was so stuck that she found herself humming it on the ride home.
"What's that song you keep humming?" Brick asked, resting his arm over the top of her seat. She, Brick and Keith where in the back of Pitch's car while Rob rode in Mike's two passenger truck right behind them. Brick had insisted that he would sit in the middle so she could have the window seat, since the shotgun was taken by Pitch's new girlfriend Rose. She was, in Shadow's opinion, ok-ish. She definitely wasn't like the boys, she was quiet, subtle and deviously smart. She had red hair with dyed black streaks, stone grey-blue eyes, and slightly tan skin. Pitch liked her for her cunningness, he had even confided in Shadow that he thought she was almost as clever as him.
"I don't remember the name, it just came to me." She said, sliding away from him a bit. Brick didn't take the hint and scooted closer to her.
"Maybe you could sing a few lines, I might know it." Brick said, in what he thought was a suave voice but really just sounded like he was falling asleep.
"I don't sing, and I can't remember the words either, just the tune." Shadow lied, she could remember the words perfectly, just not the name.
"Pity. I bet you've got a great voice." Brick leaned closer to her but backed off when he noticed Pitch glaring at him from the rear view mirror.
"Not really, I sound like a strangled animal." Shadow muttered.
"Hey Pitch, we taking your baby sis along or droppin' her off at your place?" Mike asked.
"I'm taking her home of corse." Pitch said, still glancing back to make sure Brick was leaving her alone.
That was one of Pitch's redeeming qualities, he looked out for her. He may be scary and hurtful sometimes but whenever she needed him, he was there.
Shadow got out of the car as soon as they pulled into the driveway.
"See ya Shadow, tell dad I'll be back late tonight." Pitch called from the driver window as he drove away. She waved until the car was out of sight then she went inside. Her house was a simple two story house, living room, reck room, dining room, and kitchen downstairs, bed rooms upstairs along with various closets and bathrooms throughout the house, at least one on each floor. The walls where white with pictures on them, the furniture was simple but well used, and it smelled of, well, home.
Shadow headed upstairs to her room, pausing by the bathroom to rinse out her contacts before putting them back in. Her room was similar to the rest of the house except the walls where decorated with paintings she made and music posters.
"Hey Spark." Shadow said, putting a carrot in a cage on her desk. It didn't take long for a little orange and white hamster to come out of hiding and begin nibbling on it. Shadow reached in the cage and gently scratched behind the critter's ears as soon as he was done eating.
"How are you today?" She asked, then in a squeaky voice she replied, "I'm doing great, but I could use some exercise. Could you take me for a walk?"
"Of corse I can, let's go!" She picked up the hamster and put him in a clear hamster ball. She set it on the ground and he was off. She giggled as Spark bumped into her chair leg, then she turned her attention to her homework.
After about an hour she was finished. Picking up the hamster ball she pulled the tired thing out, receiving a static shock as she did, and put him back in his cage. She had named him Spark because he generated quite a bit of electricity when he played in his tubes or the hamster ball.
"See you later Spark." She said as she headed out of her bedroom. Her dad would be home in a while and she wanted to have dinner ready before then. On her way to the kitchen, Shadow paused by a picture of her family and placed her hand on it. It showed her when she was seven and Pitch when he was eight, along with her dad and mom. Her mom and dad had gotten a divorce the next year, but custody had been granted to their dad since their mom didn't have a job or suitable home during that time. She still saw her mom on holidays and some weekends but not as often as she would have liked. Pitch refused to visit her at all, preferring to stay with dad since he felt their mom had abandoned them.
"Miss you mom." Shadow whispered then hurried over to the kitchen. She got out a pot of water and set it on the oven to boil, the song still stuck in her head. She started humming the tune as she started to cook some hamburger in a frying pan. It didn't take to long for her to start singing out loud.
"As sly as a fox, as strong as an ox
As fast as a hare, as brave as a bear
As free as a bird, as neat as a word
As quiet as a mouse, as big as a house

All I wanna be, all I wanna be, oh
All I wanna be is everything

As mean as a wolf, as sharp as a tooth
As deep as a bite, as dark as the night
As sweet as a song, as right as a wrong
As long as a road, as ugly as a toad

As pretty as a picture hanging from a fixture
Strong like a family, strong as I wanna be
Bright as day, as light as play
As hard as nails, as grand as a whale

All I wanna be oh, all I wanna be, oh
All I wanna be is everything
Everything at once
Everything at once, oh
Everything at once

As warm as the sun, as silly as fun
As cool as a tree, as scary as the sea
As hot as fire, cold as ice
Sweet as sugar and everything nice

As old as time, as straight as a line
As royal as a queen, as buzzed as a bee
As stealth as a tiger, smooth as a glider
Pure as a melody, pure as I wanna be

All I wanna be oh, all I wanna be, oh
All I wanna be is everything
Everything at once."
"That's it, everything at once. Can't believe I forgot the name, it's right in the song!" She laughed at herself. She didn't sound to bad besides being a little pitchy in some places. She went back to humming as she finished cooking the meal. It was Spaghetti and tossed salad, her dad's favorite. She set the table and waited for her dad to come home. She wandered to the back of the house and looked out the window to the back patio. Across the yard she could see through her yard's chain link fence, which kept Pitch's black and grey bulldog, Fang, from escaping, to the fence that separated her home from the Overland's home. It wasn't so much a fence as it was a brick wall, with a wooden door at one end. She knew that beyond that wall was a pool and a garden and beyond that was the grand house of the Overland's. she had been in it once for a school dance, that the Overland's had generously hosted. She knew it was amazing in there, almost like a castle. She also knew about the rumors that surrounded it. Her favorite one was that the house was so old that it had secret passage ways and tunnels leading to all over the town. The high school had a similar rumor to it. Some seniors last year had said that they had found an entrance to them, but no one really believed them.
In the midst of her thoughts, Shadow heard the door open. She turned around and saw her dad.
"Welcome home dad." She said in a casual manner.
"No, cancel that appointment, I know he's a potential client but I have a meeting with our top client… you know what, you handle it ok. Bye." Her father finished speaking into his Bluetooth. He was the CEO of Black industries so he came home like that often.
"Hi dad." Shadow tried again.
"Hi honey, no time to talk I have a huge amount of paperwork I need to finish, where's your brother?" Mr. Black asked as he headed towards his office.
"Hanging out with some friends, he said he'd be home later." She said them gesturing to the table, "I made spaghetti."
"I'll have to talk to him about wandering off without leaving sone kind of message or note. Thanks Shadow. How was your day?" He asked, scooping pasta onto his plate.
"It was ok, how about yours?" She asked even though she knew she would only get a complex response about things she had no idea about.
"Good, getting a new shipment tomorrow and I have a couple of big meetings with a few clients to pitch some new ideas. If everything goes well, Black industries will go world wide!" He summarized, heading towards his office again.
"Cool, good luck dad." Was all she got in before the door closed behind him. Shadow sighed and ate dinner alone, wishing she had someone, besides Spark, to talk to.

The next day, Jack woke up to his alarm blaring in his ear. He pounded the snooze button and tried to fall back asleep but then August knocked on his door.
"Dude! Hurry up or else I'll leave without you." He hollered. The white haired teen grumbled something about school needing to start later in the day as he shuffled out of bed. He put on a grey short sleeved shirt with a silver wave on it and dark blue jeans. He ran his hand through his hair, making stick up how he liked it before hurrying out his door. Mrs. Green was standing out there with a plate of toast and a glass of orange juice. Jack paused and quickly ate the breakfast.
"Slow down boy. You're going to make yourself sick if you keep eating like that." She chuckled.
"I'm running late, thanks for the food Mrs. Green. See you after school." He said as he rushed down the stairs.
"Have a good day Jack." Mrs. Overland called, coming out of the door between the stairs.
"I will, bye!" He called over his shoulder.
August was already waiting for him in his red Volkswagen convertible.
"Took ya long enough." August said, looking at Jack over his sunglasses.
"I made it didn't I?" He huffed, catching his breath.
"Barely." August muttered as he pulled out of the driveway.
"Whatever." Jack muttered back before putting his earbuds in and tuning out August. August roled his eyes and focused on the road.
"You shouted in your sleep last night." Jack grumbled finally.
"Really?" August asked, thinking back to his dream.
"Yeah, you said something about a touchdown." Jack smirked as August's face turned bright red.
"I was dreaming about my first football game, Joey scored three touchdowns in a row." August said.
"Sounds like he was a real pro." Jack said, taking out his earbuds.
"He is, he's actually in college right now working on a masters in science." August said.
"Cool." Jack said, he hated to admit it but he was starting to like his foster brother. He was fun, even if they didn't hang out that much. They chatted some more until they arrived at school. Once there Jack and August split, going their own ways for their classes. Jack stopped by his locker and dropped off a few books. He was just heading away when he noticed Shadow. She walked quickly, her head down, and seemed to glide between people. No one noticed her, just like no one really noticed him, except a few giggling freshmen. Jack shrugged off this train of thought and headed to his first period class, Science. The most exciting thing that happened in that class was the teacher accidentally blowing up a test tube. His next class was Physical Education, aka PE, aka sheer torture! The teacher was the head football coach and made you run laps and such. Third period, English, was better, the teacher gave the students a reading day. Lunch was great, Jack went outside and sat by himself under a tree while he ate the lunch Mrs. Green had made him. She had made him a Black Forest ham and cheddar cheese sandwich on whole wheat, an apple, a bag of homemade chocolate chip cookies, and a thermos of milk. After a meal like that he sighed contentedly and stretched out in the shade. It was a beautiful day, the sky was mostly clear with a few wispy clouds forming random shapes, the air was warm with a cool breeze every now and again, and there was no one pestering him. Life, for that moment, was perfect. But that moment was shattered by a passing group of giggling girls. One noticed him and said something to her friends. A new burst of giggling commenced as the girl who had said something blushed. The other girls nudged the girl over to where he sat and backed away.
"Can I help you?" He asked the girl, a freshman by the look of her.
"Eeeee!" The girl squealed and ran back to her friends, saying something like "he talked to me!" Jack rolled his eyes and settled back down.
"Freshmen." Someone huffed from behind Jack, startling him, "when I first got 'ere they wouldn't stop askin' me ta say 'crikey!' an stuff like that."
Jack turned to see Aster leaning against the tree.
"What do you want Kangaroo?" Jack asked.
"The gang was wondering if ya want ta hangout with us after school?" Aster asked nonchalantly, allowing the kangaroo comment to slide for now.
"Sorry, I'm busy." Jack said, standing up and walking away.
"Whatever, see ya around Frostbite." Aster said, in an almost relieved tone, Jack noted. Obviously Aster had only come over to ask him that because the others had put him up to it.
"Whatever I don't need anyone." Jack grumbled.
"Everyone needs someone." Shadow said, walking next to him.
"Is it 'bug Jack day' or something?" Jack sighed.
"As a matter of fact it is." Shadow joked. Jack gave her a side long look before allowing a small smirk to form on his face. They walked along in comfortable silence. At some point they stopped and sat down on a bench.
"Do you wanna hear something cool?" She asked.
"Sure why not?" Jack was feeling bored and needed something fun to do.
"There's suppose to be tunnels under the school that lead all over the city, and I heard one comes up over at the Overland's house."
"That sounds more like a rumor Seniors tell Freshmen to send them on wild goose chases." Jack said.
"My brother thought he'd found one last year. It turned out to be a newly dug sewer entry. It took a week for him and his gang to get that smell off." Shadow laughed. It was a nice laugh, not like the chittering bird laugh that those freshmen girls had but an honest laugh, with a few squeaks when she wasn't getting enough air. It was a laugh that got others laughing, just like right now how it was making Jack laugh too.

Shadow hadn't laughed like this in ages. She would usually try to stifle her laugh because it didn't sound light and tinkly like other girls, someone had even commented once that she sounded like a dolphin. The last time she had laughed like this was with Derek, a guy she had liked and who had told her that he liked her too. They had made a cute couple and the school had buzzed with gossip about them being engaged at one point, but he turned out to be a player and broke her heart. Pitch had gotten furious at him and broke the poor guy's arm, and luckily for him Pitch hadn't let the gang have a turn beating him up.
"No one messes with the Blacks." Pitch had said when Shadow had asked him what he had done.
Derek had moved soon after that. Shadow shook the memories away and then she thought of something else.
"Hey Jack, where do you live?" She asked him once they had stopped laughing.
"You're not gonna believe me." Jack said, looking up at the sky.
"Tell me first then I'll tell you if I believe you or not." Shadow said, poking him in the side. Jack gave her another side long look. She pleaded with her eyes until he finally gave in.
"Ok fine, I live in the Overland's house." Jack said, looking down at his feet.
"I believe you." Shadow said. Jack looked at her in surprise.
"I heard rumors going around that the Overlands had adopted another boy. I just didn't know his name, but I guess I do now." Shadow smiled at him.
"Actually they're only my foster parents, they haven't adopted me." Jack clarified.
"Oh." Shadow said as the bell rang. The two got up and walked to their next class together. Right before they went in Shadow pulled Jack into an empty class room.
"Jack, I think you and I should pretend to not be friends around my brother." She told him in a whisper.
"Why not? Does it have to do with the guy Pitch beat up?" Jack asked.
"How'd you know about that?" Shadow asked in surprise.
"My foster brother, August, told me about it. Why'd he do it?" Jack asked.
"Pitch can be a little… overprotective. That guy broke my heart so Pitch broke his arm. He said turn about's fair play. Just promise me that you'll pretend when he's around. Ok?" She explained then looked him dead in the eyes.
"Ok I promise." Jack said, crossing his heart.
"Ok, let's go." Shadow smiled in relief.
They left the classroom with a few minute interval so they wouldn't draw suspicion. Shadow ignored Jack as she walked into the classroom and sat down at the same seat she had yesterday. Pitch acknowledged her with a nod before returning to his homework.

Jack got up quickly when the bell rang and hurried to drama class. Shadow was right behind him. He was actually happy that she had pestered him that afternoon, it was nice having someone to talk too. He sped up and ducked behind the corner of the door of the drama room. When Shadow came in he jumped out and scared her.
"Boo!" He said, loving the look of surprise on her face.
"Don't do that! Do you know how many times Pitch does that to me?" She asked as she gently smacked his arm.
"It was just a joke, no need to hit so hard." Jack said, acting like she had full on slugged him.
"Oh I didn't realize I hit you so hard, are you ok?" She asked, worry in her eyes.
"I'm messing with you." He said. Shadow growled and chased him to the stage. There where a few other students there already but they where to absorbed in their cell phones to pay the two running teens any mind. When the teacher walked in Jack and Shadow took their seats.
"Ok class, attention!" The teacher said clapping his hands to get their attention, "I've got good news, this years play will be a production assembled by yours truly," There were a few hushed whispers and a groan here and there at the news, "and as you all know you must participate in the play in order to get a good grade in this class. So I expect all of you to be at auditions Thursday and Friday afternoon in two weeks, until then practice your singing and acting… now get out of here, free period the rest of the day." The class cheered at the news and quickly evacuated the class room.
"You want to go get a soda or something?" Jack asked Shadow, of all people he actually wanted to be around he wanted to be around her.
"Sounds good, meet me by the music room door. I've got to ask Mr. Robb something." Shadow said, she seemed nervous to Jack, a bit more nervous than normal.
"Ok, see you soon." Jack said and started to headed out of the classroom. He paused as he heard Shadow ask Mr. Robb something.
"No, I'm making it a musical and everyone must perform." He said irritatedly, Shadow said something else but was cut off by Mr. Robb, "everyone can sing now go on, I've got an ensemble to finish."
Jack hurried along until he was outside the drama room door, where he ran into Pitch.
"Hey Jack," Pitch said, a smirk forming on his mouth, "you didn't see Shadow in there by any chance?"
"Who? Oh your sister, yeah I think I saw her talking to the teacher." Jack said, remembering what Shadow had asked him to do.
"Thanks. Hey Jack if you ever want to hang out with the nightmares just give me a call." Pitch handed Jack a piece if paper with his cell phone number on it.
"Uh thanks." Jack said, putting the paper in his pocket. Shadow came out of the room and stopped as she saw Pitch.
"Hi Pitch." She said quietly.
"Come on Shadow, we need to get home." Pitch said, grabbing his back pack and swinging it over his shoulder.
"K." Shadow said and followed Pitch, but before they disappeared around a corner she glanced back at Jack and mouthed the words, "sorry, see you later."
Jack waved at her and gave a small smile in return. Jack turned around and headed down the hall. He wandered to the library and looked through the books until the bell rang. He stayed in the library for a few more minutes, to avoid the crowds, then decided to get his books out of his locker. After he was done gathering his books and was about to leave he heard laughter and around the corner came North, Anna, Aster, and Sandy.
"Hey Jack!" Anna called, practically flying over to him, "we're going to the new ice cream and candy shop that just opened up, you wanna come with?"
"Umm..." Jack said hesitantly.
"Course he does." North wrapped one of his giant arms around Jack's shoulders, nearly squeezing the life out of Jack. Jack was about to say no that he didn't want to when Sandy gave him such a look of pleading that instead he said, "fine."
And with that they dragged him along out to North's impressive red truck.
"Welcome to the sleigh." North said, patting the car's hood.
"The sleigh?" Jack scoffed.
"You scoff now but everyone loves the sleigh." North said, climbing into the front.
"Shotgun!" Aster called.
"What ever happened to ladies first?" Anna asked, poking Aster in the side. Aster poked her back and dodged when she tried to get him back. As they got into a poke war, Sandy pointed to Jack and North nodded.
"Sandy's right, Jack should take shotgun, rest you hop in back." North decided. Anna shrugged while Aster groaned.
"Hey, I've gotten better." North said in a hurt manner the the Australian.
"Better at what?" Jack asked, concern lacing his words as they all climbed into the car. Anna and Aster sat in the back while Sandy sat between North and Jack.
"You'll see." Aster said, buckling his seatbelt and tightening it. Jack copied him as North revved the engine. The Russian launched out of the parking lot and down the street at a few miles above the speed limit.
"Wo!" Jack said as North made several sharp turns while hardly slowing down. Sandy smiled and put his arms in the air as though they were all on a roller coaster ride.
"North! Unless you want to clean up a mess, you'd better slowdown." Aster called up to the crazy driver, his face turning a shade of green that matched his eyes. North slowed down a little bit and then they finally made it to the ice cream and candy shop. Aster jumped out of the car and hugged the ground.
"Ah, sweet solid ground! I'll nevah leave ya again!" He said. Jack almost cracked a rib from laughing so hard. Once everyone was out of the car they headed into the shop. As soon as Jack entered the store his sense of smell was assaulted by several taste bud tantalizing treats. Chocolate caramel apples, strawberry cheesecake, a variety of fudge, and other goodies were displayed in a glass case that doubled as the main counter, off to the side of that was a raised glass case to protect the ice cream, and a little farther on were stools along a counter for costumers to eat their treats. Behind the counter and along the walls were shelves upon shelves of candy, either in containers or stacked neatly. (Think the candy store from willy wonka and the chocolate factory mixed with your new day candy store/ice cream shop.)
"Wow!" Jack whispered as he followed the others to the counter where a middle aged brunette woman was washing out a milkshake glass.
"Hey there kids, what can I get you?" The woman smiled, putting the glass and rag away.
"Hello Mrs. Bennett, I'd like an eggnog milkshake." North said after scanning the menu board.
"I'll have the sugar-free mint ice cream in a waffle cup." Tooth said.
"I'll take the carrot cupcake." Aster said before he was tackled by the little blonde girl from the zoo. While Aster was distracted Sandy pointed to the tropical fruit punch smoothie.
"I guess I'll have a cherry limeade slushy." Jack said, picking the first thing he saw.
"Alright, take a seat and I'll get your order set up." Mrs. Bennett said as they all payed for their own treats. They all sat at on the stools next to the counter and soon they were all chatting, everyone but Jack and Sandy that is.
"I'm tellin' ya North, Easter is better." Aster said, the blonde, introduced as Sophie Bennett, on his lap.
"And I say, нет. Christmas better." North said firmly.
"Sophie, what do you think? Christmas or Easter?" Aster asked the giggling blonde, putting emphasis on Easter.
"Easter bunny! Hop hop hop!" She said as she jumped down from her seat and started hopping around the store.
"But Sophie, don't you like presents better than eggs?" North said as she came back around.
"Yay Christmas!" Sophie said after a moments thought. Anna rolled her eyes as the two boys both did their best to persuade the little girl into liking their favorite holiday more than the other guys.
"Are they always like this?" Jack asked as the argument got more heated.
"Only every other day." Anna smiled, shaking her head lightly. Sandy smiled sleepily before seeming to drift off into a nap. Anna and Jack laughed as the two continued arguing until Mrs. Bennett came over with the treats.
"Ok, an eggnog milkshake for jolly old Nicholas, a mint ice cream in a waffle cup for Anna fairy, a carrot cupcake for my favorite Australian, a tropical smoothie for Mr. Snoozie, and a cherry limeade for... I'm afraid I don't know you?" Mrs Bennett said as she placed each person's order I front of them.
"I'm Jack Frost." Jack said, taking a sip of his drink.
"The Overland's new boy! I should have known, Angela told me about you when we went to the gym yesterday." Mrs. Bennett smiled and nodded her head.
"Really, what did she say?" Jack asked, ignoring the awkward glances from the four teens next to him.
"That's not for me to tell you, but I can tell you're a sweet kid and a good person." Mrs Bennett said ass she walked away to help a new customer.
"You really live in the Overland house?" Anna asked after a moment.
"Yeah so?" Jack said, a bit worried that he was about to be made fun of.
"Cool, my parent's are the local dentists and they're friends with the. Overlands." She smiled.
"And my da's the owner of the toy store just across from here." North pointed over his shoulder to a large store.
"My dad's CEO of a lawyer firm, but my mum owns the large boutique off main." Aster shrugged.
"How about you Sandy? What do your parents do?" Jack asked. Sandy pointed to the bank next to the toy store.
"Your parents work in the bank?" Jack clarified. Sandy nodded and took a big sip from his drink then clasped his hands on his head.
"Brain freeze." Aster laughed then choked a little on his cupcake.
"Be nice." Anna nudged Aster in the ribs causing him to choke a little more. Sandy laughed soundlessly while Jack nearly laughed slushie out his nose.
"Enough, before we kill new friend." North laughed, holding a stitch in his side from the laughter.
"New friend?" Jack asked.
"Da." North nodded, "this what friends do, eat food, hang out..."
"Talk..." Anna added.
"And laugh, a lot in our case..." Aster put in.
"And have fun." North finished. Sandy smiled happily and gave a thumbs up.
"Hmm." Jack said, growing a bit distant. Sandy noted the slightly sad look in his eye when Jack suddenly stood up and headed for the door.
"Jack? Where are you going?" Anna asked.
"I've got to get home, I've got homework to do." Jack lied.
"Ok, see you tomorrow." She said, looking on sadly as he turned around and left.
"He's a strange one, that Frost." Aster said, taking another bite of his cupcake.
"Da, you can say that again." North nodded.
"I think he's just lonely. Hey we should invite him to join the club!" Anna said perking up a bit. Sandy nodded enthusiastically.
"No way Sheila, there's something off about 'im." Aster said, crossing his arms and shaking his head.
"He's just lonely and needs a hobby or something. Come on North can't we let Jack join?" Anna pleaded.
"Only if others agree." North nodded, stroking his goaty. Sandy nodded and gave a thumbs up while Aster held firm and shook his head.
"Oh come on fuzzy bunny." Anna said leaning her head on Aster's arm and looking up at him with puppy-dog eyes. Aster tried to stay firm but his resolve soon melted.
"This is a bad idea mate, but fine." Aster sighed. Everyone cheered while on the other side of town another group was cheering because they too had decided they wanted Jack Frost to join their group too.
