"Sophie, look, I know it's not much but what you said about Jack's eyes being all black sort of reminded me of something," Nightlight began. I waited for him to go on. He frowned. "There's this myth, as some people would call it, of the Black-eyed-beings. It's like a demon that takes over the body. I mean, when I was the Man in Moons guardian he told me lots of stories and that was one of them. Maybe it's what's taking over Jack's body."

I quirked a brow up, concentrating hard. Maybe Nightlight was right. But what if it was demon? "How do we get it out of it?" I asked.

"Uh... That's the one thing the Man in Moon never mentioned," Nightlight admitted. "But I say we grab Jack, get him back to Burgess and, you know, try to figure out a way to help him." Nightlight sighed. "Sorry, Soph. I can't think of anything else to help."

"No, no. You're the one who came up with a good idea of what we might be facing," I replied softly, although, I was feeling a bit panicky. What if there was no way to help Jack? How do you even fight a demon? I did my best to keep a poker-face. "Demons... They're just angry ghosts, right?" Nightlight shrugged. "Well... Shouldn't they be in Tech nDuinn if they are? Gah– Scathach will know what to do."

Snow began to fall– a sudden blizzard. It became hard to see in front of me– I could hardly see my own hand in front of my face. This was Jack's doing. A force of snow hit me in the chest. I gasped and stopped moving forward. I squinted and saw Jack. He was floating in front of me, his staff held in front of him. I pursed my lips and held out my hand, palm up.

"What are you doing, Jack?" I asked him. I wondered if he could see me clearly– I saw him squinting and guessed not.

"Just having a little fun, Sophie." Jack shrugged his shoulders and flew closer to me. I no longer had to squint– it was so weird being close to him like this. My heart was hammering in my chest and my hands trembled. "You know me best. You know I like to have fun. I'm playing a great game now, to be honest."

"What game?" I asked, my voice quivering.

"Distract the Sophie." He smiled devilishly. I backed up and looked around– where were the others gone? Nightlight had been right beside me! I turned around– Alvern and Tooth were gone too. "It's a fun game! Oh, and guess what?" He waited for a response, but I couldn't answer him. He leaned his face close to mine. "I'm winning," he whispered.

Instinctly I shot out lightning, my patience with this Demon-Jack coming to an end. He quickly avoided the strike and laughed. "Pathetic." He chuckled and raised his staff. "But I guess this game of yours could be more fun!" He shot ice towards me which I narrowly avoided.

"Get out of Jack!" I screamed before releasing more lightning towards him. For a split second, Jack's eyes flickered back to normal. I hesitated a second too long– Jack's ice attack hit my hand. It didn't freeze but it went numb and got terribly sore. The flicker of his eyes was my little hope. I swore, shaking my hand which was slowly regaining feeling. It tingled.

"Point one to me." Jack smiled and raised his staff again.

I felt outraged. "Why don't you possess someone else's body?"

Jack's face screwed up into anger. He lowered his staff, scowling at me. "Use someone else's body? Don't you realise, you stupid little girl, that Jack is a powerful being?" This was the Demons anger being released through Jack. I felt a sudden surge of fear. I wanted to run from him and not come back– it took all of me to resist the urge. "I could destroy the world if I wanted to. All I have to do is get rid of you and the rest is easy. But you, girl, are proving to be quite difficult."

I smirked. "I've always been difficult," I replied. I shot at him, my energy slowly fading. Summoning lightning can take a lot out of me. I looked directly into Jack's (or not) eyes. "Please, Jack. You can fight him... You just have to be strong. You are strong. Please, you can do this." I tried hard to get my voice through to Jack– could it possibly work? Probably not. Demon-Jack began to look even more frustrated. I wasn't sure I was exactly helping Jack by calling onto him.

"Quiet!" I blinked, surprised. Jack covered his ears as though trying to block me out– although, I wasn't exactly sure that it was me he was trying to shut up. Jack's eyes began to flicker again and my stomach twisted. "You will die, girl– Sophie, what's–? STOP!" The voices changed from cold to soft and then to anger. For a moment it was Jack trying to talk. I knew it was.

Demon-Jack screamed and trusted his staff out. A shot of cold spread over me. My whole body began to feel cold and numb. My heart pace picked up– this was a strange sensation. Everywhere felt cold– inside and out both felt as though they were going to freeze. The snow which fell didn't exactly help either.

The feeling slowly began to pass and my whole body felt as though it was getting poked by needles as warmth (of somewhat) began to flood through my body again. Jack covered his ears again and I felt worried and relieved at the same time. Jack was resisting– that was a good sign, but the Demon was obviously strong and resisting Jack too. How could I help? Calling onto Jack seemed to make the Demon more stronger and want to resist more. But calling also seemed to be bringing Jack back a little.

And where were the others? What did Demon-Jack do to them?

"You are starting to get on my nerves," the demon said through gritted teeth.

I shrugged. "It's a common thing, to be honest." I sighed. "But I don't get on JACK'S nerves. JACK seems to have gotten use to me. JACK should remember that." I yelled Jack's name each time, hoping to get through to him. The demon narrowed his eyes (Jack's, whatever). His eyes flickered again and he began to look confused.

I saw two figures appear behind Jack. I was about to get ready to fight them, but through the snow I recognised them– it was Nightlight and Alvern. Alvern held a finger up to his lip: don't say a word. I swallowed, trying to act normal.

"Jack is gone, little girl," the demon snarled.

"I don't think he is," I retaliated. "He's in there somewhere and you're fighting to restrain him." I knew that was what was happening– the demon and Jack were fighting inside Jack's mind. "And we're going to help bring him back–" The two boys flew forward and caught Demon-Jack. I grabbed the staff from his hands and he snarled. It was so strange to see him like this. It was odd to see him fighting against us.

"Come on," Alvern exhaled. "Let's get him down to the others." I breathed a sigh of relief now that we had him.

.*.*.*.*.

"His eyes," Tooth gasped when we landed down. She looked cold and I wondered if Jack put a spell on them. Maybe that would explain why I couldn't find them up there.

"I think my eyes are the most attractive part of me," the demon said. "This body is quite horrifying, wouldn't you agree? Who wants to be lanky? And white hair at eighteen? How horrifying." The demon seemed to be amused at our angry faces. "Why the long faces?"

"Please tell me there's some way to get rid of this thing?" Mund asked.

"There's always a way," Scathach said.

"And I know one way," I told them. "But it makes the demon angry. And it makes him resist more. But... It also helps Jack somewhat. I- I think it might take a while to get him back, though."

"We have time," North said, nodding his head.

"No," I replied. "We don't have time. We have to get rid of the demon soon. It's winter, and winter means snow. And that's Jack's job."

"I could make light snow in places," Seraphina said. "I'll start with Russia. And places near the north. They always get the worst." She sighed. "I'll be back as soon as I can. Try keep me updated somehow of his condition."

"It's a shame you lot want to get rid of me," the demon said when Seraphina flew off. "I can be quite fun. I think I could be a good replacement for Jack– I'm way better, believe me."

"Oh, shut it," I growled.

I paced back and forth in front of him. One we got him out of Jack's body, what then? Would he try to posses us after? There had to be a way to get rid of this thing permanently that wouldn't damage Jack in anyway.

"You know, even if you do somehow get rid of me, I'm just one out of hundreds," it said. "We've roamed this earth for so long and no one has come close to destroying us– only ever did they get us out of a body. But we're a strong force and we move onto the next body when we've been evicted from one."

"Why?" I couldn't help but ask.

"Knowledge. Understanding. Revenge." Demon-Jack shrugged. "Any mortal who has come by us have many theories of what we could be: Aliens are one of them. We are simply demons, end of story."

"Revenge? Why revenge? What did we do to you?" I asked him.

"You'll have to ask the big guy, sweetie. He doesn't tell us anything, but how could we resist the chance to rule immortal beings?"

"Well..." I couldn't think of what to say to that. "Who is the big guy?"

"Is he a god?" Scathach asked him.

"Please, don't insult us like that," the demon replied. "We don't associate with those guys. Do you ever realise that they are such bores? Ugh... Anyway. You won't get answers from me, but nice try, dear."

"You're infuriating," I mumbled.

"Ditto," he replied with a smirk. If it wasn't for the eyes, I could almost believe it was Jack I was actually talking to– the non-possessed Jack, I mean. "But do know this: my master, or whatever you want to call the big guy, is a ruthless guy. He won't mind killing you lot. He does it for the fun of it."

"And we won't mind killing him either," Mund said. "Was he Evil's master too?"

"Oh, god. That guy? He was pathetic, don't you think?" It chuckled. "Not much of a decoy, to be honest. Anyway, yeah. He worked with us... Until you lot trapped him. I imagine that was much easier than you thought, right?"

I frowned. "Yeah, it was." I didn't like how this demon knew so much. It made me nervous. I didn't like how it talked through Jack– he sounded so sour and it was strange to hear coming from Jack. This wasn't Jack exactly, though. I had to remind myself that. I turned around and saw Sandy looking up at me. He made the shape of a house above his head followed by a question mark. "Yeah. I agree, Sandy. I think we should go home.

"North, would you mind?" I nodded in Jack's direction. He was still being held down by Alvern and Nightlight. I twisted the staff uncomfortably in my hand– it seemed so out of place. This was Jack's.

North nodded and walked over and lifted Jack over his shoulder.

"Easy there, big guy," Demon-Jack muttered. "Don't have to be so rough." North rolled his eyes and we began to venture back to Tech nDuinn.

"You'll have to come back, you know that, right?" Scathach said. I nodded my head. "I can help you beat whoever this 'Big Guy' is. And I'll search around. How long until you lot return?"

"I'm not coming back until Jack is okay again," I told her.

"Oh, bad move," Demon-Jack muttered from North's shoulder. "That could take a while."

"Can we knock him out?" North asked.

"No," Demon-Jack and I said in unison. I narrowed my eyes at him and he smirked. "He may be possessed or whatever, but it's still Jack's body. We're not going to hurt him."

"Hurt him?" the demon exclaimed. "You kicked me in the face! And can I just say: ow!?"

"Well, you deserved that," I replied.

The demon rolled his eyes– I think. It was hard to tell when they were all black. "I deserve to be treated with respect. This. Is. Not. Comfortable!" He squirmed in North's grip. He sighed when he got nowhere and let himself fall limply again.

"This is going to be a long journey home," Mund mumbled, shaking his head in annoyance.
