Day 117
The sky turns orange as the sun is swallowed by the hills. Foxleap, Lionblaze, Icecloud, Cinderheart and I lie in the centre of the clearing. It has been three seasons since my warrior ceremony. Dovekit and Ivykit have already been born; Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight are going to have kits of their own soon.
Bumblepaw and Briarpaw chase Blossompaw, skidding up dust as they run past us. I don't know how they find the energy to run around now. Today has been one of the hottest of the season, and we haven't even reached the peak of Greenleaf yet. The Gathering is tomorrow and I get the feeling something really important is going to happen there.
Foxleap's fur brushes mine as he gets up. "I'm going to get some more water for the elders."
I stand up. "I'll come with you."
The orange warrior nods and smiles.
"Feathersong! Lionblaze! I need to talk to you." Jayfeather meows as he hurries out of the nursery. Foxleap gives me a sympathetic smile and sighs as he sits down again.
Lionblaze stretches before following Jayfeather into the medicine cat den. "What is it?"
"I was thinking… Feathersong, since you know all about us and everything, you do know who the third cat is, don't you?" Jayfeather looks straight into my eyes.
"Dovekit is the third cat but-"
Leafpool is suddenly there, and by her ruffled fur and the herbs in her mouth, I can tell she was probably in the store when this conversation started. She drops the herbs. "No, Feathersong! You're part of the Three!"
I widen my eyes at Leafpool. "No, you- There must be a misunderstanding. I don't have any powers!"
"I already told you, Spottedleaf came to me and gave me a sign!" She exclaims.
Jayfeather looks at me. "You already knew and you didn't tell us?"
"She- this isn't supposed to happen! Dovekit is the third cat!"
Jayfeather sits down, frowning. "And that tree was supposed to fall into the camp and Ashfur was supposed to die. A lot of things were supposed to happen but you interfered. There's a chance that the future will change. You can't just come into the 'past' and expect it to still be the same."
Leafpool nods. My eyes dart between them. "What happens to Dovekit then?"
"We'll see. Since you said you don't carry her power, there might be a chance that you're both part of the prophecy and the Three becomes Four." Jayfeather mews.
I still don't think I'm the third cat." I mutter. Yeah, I'm a human who knows nearly everything about the Clans, but how is that a power?
Honeyfern walks into the medicine cat den and asks if she could speak with Leafpool and Jayfeather for a moment.
Lionblaze and I nod before leaving them, and Foxleap is entering the camp with a wad of dripping moss in his mouth. I bite my lip and begin to walk over to him, when I see the tunnel entrance tremble again and Poppyfrost emerges, carrying some moss as well.
Her fur brushes Foxleap and I notice his breath catch in his throat. They proceed to the elders' den together and I sit down awkwardly. Icecloud is putting a mouse onto the fresh-kill pile when she sees me. "Hey, Feathersong! Can I talk to you for a moment?"
"Sure. You wanna go down to the lake? I'm a bit thirsty."
She nods. "Okay."
By the time we reach the lake, the light has been drained from the sky, leaving it a pale dark blue. "So, what's up?"
"I saw Lionblaze sneak out of the den a few nights ago…" Icecloud mews quietly as we walk cautiously around the dark patches of mud, following a small dry path to the shrunken lake.
"Oh…"
She looks back up at me with wide, pale blue eyes. "I didn't mean to be nosy or anything. But he seemed very careful to wake anyone up, and I wondered why." She looks at her paws. "I kinda followed him."
"Oh…" My voice drops an octave when I sense where this is going.
"He went to WindClan." She says in a hushed voice.
I nod slowly.
"Please don't tell him I followed him. I just don't know what to do." Icecloud mews. "He seemed to know what he was doing… I think he might have done it before."
"Why do you care though?" I ask curiously.
She flattens her ears and flushes. "Um… No reason. I was just worried about him, that's all."
We get a drink before deciding to take some moss for Whitewing and the kits.
The clearing is nearly empty when we enter the camp. A few cats still linger in the shadows, talking quietly to one another. Firestar is retreating to his den with Sandstorm at his side. We go into the nursery, where Whitewing and Daisy are trying to calm Ivykit and Dovekit and get them to go to sleep.
"But we're not tired yet!" Dovekit chirps, escaping her mother's grip and running to the other side of the den.
Daisy looks up at us. "Oh, is that for us?" She asks.
I nod and put the moss down and Dovekit and Ivykit run over and start lapping at the water.
Ferncloud seemed to be sleeping, but when it became silent, she lifts her head. "Oh, you two didn't need to do that. We had just had some water a little earlier."
"We were going down there anyway. Besides, it's too hot to turn water away; should drink as much as you can." Icecloud meows.
As soon as Dovekit finishes drinking, she hops over to Whitewing. "Can we please go to the Gathering tomorrow night?"
"You're not apprentices yet!" Her mother meows. "Kits aren't allowed to go to Gatherings."
"But then we'll have to wait a whole moon for the next Gathering!" Dovekit complains.
Ivykit lifts her chin. "True warriors can be patient. I'll wait a whole season if that's what it takes!"
I chuckle and give Whitewing a sympathetic smile. "Good night."
Whitewing wraps her tail around the kits and pushes them towards her. "Sleep well."
When I enter the apprentices' den, Foxleap and Lionblaze are already in their nests, sleeping. Icecloud and I tip toe in and get into our own beds.
I wake up in the middle of the night because I'm awfully hot. When I blink my eyes a couple of times, I realize why. A patch of sweat covers my side from where my body is pressed up against… I sniff. Jayfeather?
