A big thank you to Slashingfruit101, Niiro, and Sleeping Moon for their lovely reviews on this story! Thank you guys so much! And I will defintely give Carrot Cake a look, Sleeping Moon.
Elliot was sitting at the desk in his bedroom, a big pile of paperwork pushed in the far upper corner while he tried to focus on the single paper in front of him, but that seemed near impossible. The words were doing 360's like they were on skateboards and he couldn't stop looking at the door.
He didn't understand what he had done wrong. He had fired at that damned knight lots of times and Sabrina knew that everyone tried to kill eachother, so why did she just freak out like that? Was she friends with Ace? Or had he done something stupid and hadn't realized it?
Sabrina acted like Ace was so important to her...is it possible they're together?
Following that thought suddenly came a sharp pang in his chest, painful enough to make him, the mafia's big scary no.2, cry out. It felt like something had snapped inside him and it hurt like hell. He clenched his shirt and waited for the throbbing to ebb away. I...I'm not injured, but it hurts...
"If you lay a finger on him, I'll never speak to you again!"
Does she hate me? I don't understand, she was always so kind and gentle. She was the first person who actually gave a shit about me and worried over the smallest injuries. Always crazy and smiling and joking, she is no doubt the nicest person I've ever met, Outsider or not. As pretty as a painting...
When he started to think of all the nice things about Sabrina, he began to smile through his pain. To be frank, I really like her!
Suddenly feeling the need to talk to Sabrina, Elliot shot up from his desk and bolted out of his room, an idiotic grin on his face. He passed by servants who had paperwork for him without even a glance. His work would be waiting for him when he was finished with Sabrina!
In no time, he was standing in front of Sabrina's door, panting a little. He was about to knock when he heard a sound from inside. He thought he had imagined it but then he heard it again. Curiousity getting the better of him, he pressed his ear against the door and listened carefully. It was a sad, lonely sound, one that brought back that pain in his chest.
Sabrina was crying in there.
Resisting the urge to just kick the door in, he pulled his head away from the door and knocked softly. He heard her sob more quietly a few more times and knew she was trying calm herself down. Deciding she was taking too long, he called, "Sabrina, it's me, Elliot. Please open the door."
The next moment, the door unlocked and she poked her head out. She had changed from a yellow-and-green dress into a cream button-down shirt that was five sizes too big, black shorts, and she was barefooted. She looked pretty much like she always did, except her dark brown hair was ruffled and there was a deep blush under her eyes, the only signs she had been crying.
"Hello, Elliot." She greeted, forcing herself to sound cheerful. "What can I do for you?"
He frowned at her. Didn't she trust him enough not to hide her feelings from him? "I wanted to see if you were doing okay. After the whole Ace incident." Elliot knew he was stalling, but he didn't want to come on too strong on her. He wouldn't know what to do if she started crying on him.
"Well, I'm fine, thank you." Her tone was clipped and wavered slightly. "Was there anything else?"
Is that how you're going to be? Elliot thought, frustrated. Fine. "Yeah, I want you to tell me why you were crying."
Sabrina touched her burning cheek. Then she looked him right in the eye and lied, "I have an allergy."
"Yeah, right. Just look at the pollen floating around in the air in here. C'mon, Sabrina, who upset you?"
"It's nothing, Elliot, nothing at all. Oh, I just got some great tea. Would you like some?"
Now she was stalling. Great. Putting on a fake smile, Elliot said, "Tea would be great."
Sabrina led him into her room and he sat down on the bed, looking around. Blood had given her a guest room so it was very plain. The only signs that this was someone's room was a wardrobe filled with dresses and a china tea set on a small table. Elliot imagined the white walls painted yellow and green and the bed a pale cream color. It would fit her so well.
"Do you want any sugar, Elliot?" Sabrina asked, watching at him while she poured some tea.
"Nah. I like it plain."
"Well, then here you go." She held the tea cup out to him with a shaky hand and he took it before she could drop it. She smiled apologetically and sat next to him on the bed, stirring her tea with a spoon. After taking a drink, he realized it was carrot tea. I must be rubbing off on her, Elliot thought with a smile.
They sat in a comfortable silence, having their tea, and Elliot kept glancing at her from the corner of his eye. She looked so tiny in that shirt, it was almost like a dress on her. And he had never noticed how smooth Sabrina's legs were...
Needing to escape those thoughts, Elliot asked again, "Why were you crying?"
"I'd appreciate if you'd leave that alone, Elliot."
"Tell me and I might."
"Elliot..." She gave him a tired look, but he was going to get an answer out of her if it killed him.
"What's the guy's name?"
"What guy?"
"The guy who made you cry."
Sabrina rolled her eyes. "Men. You think a woman's world has to revolve around you. I used to read some of my mother's books and a woman couldn't seem to exist by herself, make decisions for herslef, or enjoy herself. Nope. She had to have some guy with her or else she wouldn't survive. I wonder if they've changed any."
"I've never thought of it that way before, but that seems about right." Elliot took another sip of his tea. "What's his name, Sabrina?"
"This tea cup is too expensive to throw at you."
"Good. Now please tell me."
"I could throw my pillow at you."
"I'm not backing off until you tell me. Honestly, how bad can it possibly be?"
Sabrina stared at him for a few heartbeats. She looked like glass just waiting to be broken. Elliot wondered where the sudden urge to hold her came from. She stood up and for a second Elliot thought she was going to run out, but instead she just placed her tea cup back with the tea set. She moved back to the bed, sitting closer to him than before. After several deep breaths, she started talking.
"His name was Jonathan MacDougal. He's from my world. We were best friends since we were little. He was amazing, to say the least. He's the sweetest guy I've ever met. He was the stronger one of the two of us: Brave and not afraid to speak his mind. For that, a lot of people have often lost their temper on him, but you just have to forgive Jonathan. There was no middle ground with him. You either loved him or hated him. And he was loved by everyone, and he loved everyone. I guess he was kinda like an Outsider in my world: He attracted anyone who happened to be around. I...I fell in love with him a long time ago, but I was afraid to tell him how I felt. I knew we were both really young and it probably wouldn't work out, but I couldn't stop loving him, even if he did annoy the hell out of me sometimes. But when I finally built up my courage to tell him, he had to move very far away. I never saw him again. I shut myself away in my room for weeks. My parents thought I was upset because I'd just lost a friend, but it was a lot more than that. I didn't want to feel pain like that again, so I decided not to ever let anyone in and put up walls to protect myself. I didn't want anyone to get too close..."
Sabrina's voice started to crack and she put a hand over her mouth, tears making her eyes gleam. Elliot laid a comforting hand on her shoulder and felt her trembling. A rage made the blood boil. He wanted to kill the son of a bitch who was making her suffer. He'd nail him to the nearest tree and shoot his brains out.
"A-Ace looks just like him, Elliot," she murmured, wiping her eyes with her sleeve. "I thought for sure it was Jonathan when I first saw him. Older, sure, but he... I...I couldn't..."
"I understand, you don't need to say anything more." Elliot pulled her into his chest and gave her a tight hug. Her face pressed against his neck and he could feel her tears seeping through his shirt. Elliot stroked her hair. She's so nice...she doesn't deserve to be treated this way!
"Sabrina, if you think this person is the reason for all of your suffering, then I hate him." Her crying stopped abruptly as he continued, "I'll never forgive someone who makes you so sad. I promise you, that if I ever meet the bastard, I'll make him regret it."
She looked up at Elliot. He looked more angry than she'd ever seen him. "What're...you saying?"
"I'll kill him for you."
"W-What..." Her green eyes widened to the size of dinner plates. "Why?!"
Elliot looked confused. "Don't you want to get back at the bastard for what he did? You don't want to hurt anymore, right? That's why I'll-"
"STOP IT!" Sabrina shouted, pulling out of his hug and retreating to the edge of the bed. She looked terrified. Was she scared...of him? "I would never let you do that to him...Jonathan has nothing to do with you. Leave him alone." She turned away from him and all he saw was her back. "Get out, Elliot."
"H-Hey, Sabrina! What's the big-"
"Get out!" She screamed. Elliot was frozen in shock. He'd never heard her scream at anyone before.
They sat there for what seemed like an eternity until Elliot rose from the bed and backed away. He looked over his shoulder as he wrapped his hand around the doorknob. "See you later," he said quietly. She didn't say anything in response. He closed the door behind him with a soft click, but he couldn't go back to his room just yet. He collapsed against the door and leaned his head against the door-frame.
He was in deep shit.
This is pretty much the chapter where everything explodes in Sabrina's face. Ha, and people thought it wouldn't happen. I've been writing in first person for so long, doing third-person is kinda weird. I apologize if I used "I" or "me" anywhere ^^;
I'm out!
