Chapter 17 – Happily ever after

18 months later

Today was Thomas' fifth birthday party and all his friends and their parents had descended into the backyard of what was once a frat house many years ago. Everyone was having a great time especially the birthday boy.

Alex was talking to Cristina in the kitchen, happy and surprised that his long time friend took time out from her hectic job in New York to attend his son's fifth birthday party. Alex being Alex though couldn't quite bring himself to tell her how much it did mean to him that she had made the trip.

Jo walked into the kitchen from the direction of the living room.

"Alex can you come with me for a minute? Sorry Cristina this won't take long." Jo added.

"No problem." Cristina said as she grabbed a tray of food and headed out to the backyard.

"What's wrong hun?" Alex asked, seeing the concern on her face.

"Just come upstairs with me for a minute."

Alex just nodded his head and followed her up the stairs into the bathroom. Once inside with the door shut, Jo handed him the pregnancy test. Alex looked at the plus sign and a slow smile began to form on his lips.

"Jo." Alex whispered and took her in his arms and clung to her. Jo hadn't said anything and her eyes began to fill with tears.

"I'm sorry." She finally said.

"Don't be sorry, you are allowed to cry." He said kissing her softly. "We will go to the hospital tomorrow and get a blood test done so we can find out just how far along we are."

"We." She said smiling.

"Yeah WE. It's going to be different this time. I am going to be here every day. You won't have to do it alone this time."

"Alex, I am a little scared, after Thomas, the doctors told me it would be difficult to carry again to full term."

"Yeah well, lucky for you, you have me and if it looks like that is going to be the case; between Arizona and me everything is going to be just fine."

"Let's not tell anyone yet. I want to be sure. Especially Thomas, he will be so excited." Jo said.

"Okay. We better get back down to the party." Alex said as he kissed her lightly on the lips and placed his hand on her stomach. "I love you." He said as they left the bathroom.

Jo smiled at him confident that everything was going to be fine.

2 Months later

Jo was now fourteen weeks pregnant and had just entered her second trimester. Her hormones had kicked in big time and she was often in a bad mood.

She stormed into Alex's office as he was in the middle of doing some paperwork.

"Hey Princess how are you feelin'?" Alex asked.

"I need sex." She said as she sat down on the chair opposite him.

Alex smirked at her. "Well I guess I can help you out."

"Oh wipe that smirk off your face. It has nothing to do with you, it is my hormones. I think about IT ALL THE TIME. That can't be normal can it?"

"You know it's different for everyone." Alex said trying to take her seriously but he was finding her increased libido an absolute perk for him even if it wasn't for her.

"So how much time can you spare now?" she asked hating herself.

"Oh babe sorry I am about to go into surgery in twenty minutes."

"Plenty of time." Jo said as she locked his office door and closed the blinds.

"Wow, I feel so used." He said jokingly as he kissed her softly.

"I'm sorry I just..." Jo trailed off as he took her mouth in a fierce passionate kiss.

"Do you see me complaining?" he asked as he traced his hands down over her breasts which had gotten slightly bigger over the last few weeks.

It didn't take long for Alex to remove the essential clothing, he kissed her neck and Jo moaned as he moved her so she was straddling him on his office chair. He entered one and then two fingers inside of her and Jo gasped at the contact. Sex had never been like this with anyone else.

Moments later Alex thrust himself up into her and they both moaned at the contact and they found their perfect rhythm. Alex whispered dirty things into her right ear and within moments Alex could feel her contract around him as her orgasm shook her body. Seconds later he followed. They sat like that for a short while as their breathing and heart rate returned to normal.

"God I love you." Jo said smiling.

"I love you too.' He replied placing a soft kiss on the tip of her nose.

"Look at that you have five minutes to get to your surgery." Jo said shyly.

"Babe I want to ask you something, and I don't want you to get upset with me."

"What is it?" Jo said seeing the concern in his eyes.

"What did you do last time when you were pregnant with Thomas? You know about your increased sex drive."

"Oh Alex, if was so different then. I was miserable. I missed you so much my chest hurt all the time, I didn't have time to feel anything close to sex. I spent all of my time trying to figure out how I could give Thomas the life he deserved on my own."

"I'm sorry Princess. I am so sorry you went through all of that on your own. Just the thought of any man putting his hands on you makes me crazy."

"Maybe "daddy" hormones are kicking in for you." Jo said smiling.

"Maybe. I'm pretty sure it's just I want you all to myself. I belong to you, just like you belong to me."

"Stop it Alex, You are going to make me cry." She said wiping a few tears from her eyes.

"I can't help it. I still can't believe I have my very own family. I think you need to go home and get some rest." He said gently.

"I will shortly. I have one more patient I want to check up on then I will pick Thomas up from school before I go home."

They shared a brief kiss and they both left Alex's office in different directions.

Another four months later

Alex organised for Thomas to spend the night with Arizona and Callie, or more importantly for Thomas he got to spend the night with Sophia. Alex had been kicking himself for not having done this earlier. He knew his timing sucked, Jo was beginning to feel uncomfortable and even though he still thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world, Jo didn't agree with him.

Alex ordered in her favourite food, set the table and wore his favourite jeans and t-shirt. No point dressing up because that would give everything away and he at least wanted some sort of surprise. Jo arrived home and was welcomed by Alex sitting on the sofa. He seemed a little nervous but they both were now that Jo was entering her last trimester. She sat next to him.

"Something smells great." Jo commented.

"Yeah, I ordered some food from the Italian place you love."

"Oh thanks hun. I'm starving." Jo said as she made to get up, Alex stopped her by grabbing her hand. "Alex. What is it?" she said sitting back down seeing the worried look on his face.

"Jo you know I love you."

"Yes, what, what are you saying, you are scaring me."

"No, I'm sorry Jo I should have done this a year ago, two years ago really, but anyway I was hoping that you would want to marry me." Alex said, pulling a ring out of his jeans pocket.

A slow smile started to grow across Jo's mouth as she hugged him, and kissed him full on the lips.

"Is that a yes?" He asked.

"It's a yes." She said tears starting to form in her eyes. "Stupid hormones." Jo muttered as Alex put the ring on her left ring finger.

"Jo I don't know why I have waited so long, I know my timing isn't great, we are about to have a baby."

"It doesn't matter. I love you and I was always happy with the way things were but I really want all of us to have the same surname. Like a real family, the four of us belong together."

"Yeah we do Princess." Alex kissed her with passion.

A few weeks later Jo was admitted to hospital for total bed rest, to ensure the baby would not come early. It was a long three weeks, yet when Jo's water broke at thirty eight weeks, everything was in a controlled environment. Alex, however was a little out of control.

Sarah Josephine Karev was born by C-section and was perfectly healthy. Thomas Alexander Karev was very happy to be a big brother and Alex and Jo Karev lived with their children happily ever after.
