When Howard walked back into the room, Bernadette and Danielle were engaged in a conversation. He'd been worried that this meal was going to go terribly, but after the initial awkwardness, it had all gone smoothly. Danielle was currently telling a story about her favorite professor at college, and the two women laughed as they cleared the plates, causing Howard to smile. He was glad things had worked out. After all, Bernadette was his wife and Danielle was his sister – they were the two most important women in his life.
"Do you want to stay for dessert?" Bernadette asked, and Danielle shook her head.
"Thanks, but I can't." She answered. "I have class in the morning and I have to study. But this was nice."
"It was," Howard said as he took her now empty plate from her. "We should…do this again sometime, maybe."
Danielle nodded. "Yeah." She smiled at her brother and sister in law before grabbing her bag and showing herself out, saying goodbye and closing the door softly behind her.
Howard and Bernadette cleaned up silently for a few minutes after she was gone. Howard noticed Bernadette seemed deep in thought about something as he handed her plates to put in the dishwasher – he still didn't know how to work the damn thing – but he said nothing. He figured she was probably still thinking about Raj. While they weren't keeping him in the dark, Raj had made it clear he didn't want to know the details, and it was obvious he still wasn't over Danielle.
However, when Bernadette spoke, she didn't mention Raj. "We could do it."
Howard glanced at her before grabbing a wine glass from the table. "Do what?"
"We could do the family thing. You, me, your sister…" Bernadette trailed off and shrugged as she took the wine glass from him. "Maybe a…maybe a kid."
Howard was suddenly very glad he wasn't holding the wine glass anymore because if he was he probably would've dropped it. "…Bernadette…"
"You asked me last time," Bernadette continued, turning around so she could look at him. "…You asked me, if I loved the baby." There was a pause as both of them thought about one of the darkest days in each of their lives. Howard could only think of one day that even compared – the day his dad left.
When they'd both had their moment, Bernadette continued. "…And I did. I didn't think I would, but I did. I thought the fact that my mother wasn't always around when I was a kid meant I wouldn't be a good parent. And I'm sure under your desire to have a baby you're scared of being your father too. But we can't let their choices define us. We – we had dinner with your sister tonight, and we enjoyed it. A few weeks ago we wouldn't have even attempted this because you were letting your father prevent you from having a relationship with her. And maybe, deep down I didn't think I could be a good mom not because children are sticky and needy and loud but because my own mother was a workaholic who left me to take care of my siblings. We have to stop living like this. We could have a baby and raise it and not screw it up because we are not our - ."
Howard closed the space between them and cut her off by kissing her. "I have never, ever been more attracted to woman in my life. I love you."
Bernadette smiled. "I love you too."
Howard paused. He agreed with everything Bernadette said, but he didn't want her to agree to have a kid with him just because she thought she could. He wanted to make sure she wanted it. "Are you sure you're ready to do this?"
"I'm sure." Bernadette insisted. "I told you, we can do this."
"That's not what I meant."
Bernadette's face faltered as she thought about her miscarriage again. "I'd be 14 weeks by now." She said. "I'd be starting to show, and in my second trimester. And you – you'd be getting me ice cream and pickles at 3 am and making comments about the growing size of my boobs and keeping photos from my ultrasounds in your wallet. And some days it still hurts, because I think about what could've been, and how I don't have that now. I think about how happy we could be right now, about that idiotic smile that would be on your face and me being pregnant and for the first time ever I want that. I want that for us. I want to give you this, because you deserve it. I want to see that idiotic smile on your face, and make you get me food in the middle of the night, I even want to listen to you talk about my breasts. You aren't the person you were when I first met you, Howard. Now you're a man in ways people never thought you could be, in ways you never thought you could be. You're a man in ways your father never was, and you deserve to be a father. And I can't take that away from you again, so believe me when I say I want to do this. Now."
Howard began to smile again. "…You know I could start those comments about your breasts now, if you want."
Bernadette laughed and rolled her eyes lovingly. Of course that was his reply. That was her Howie… "I didn't mean we had to start right this very second…"
"Come on," Howard said. "You can't give me that whole, emotional speech and not expect me to want to sleep with you after that. Plus we've been getting a little too mushy anyways."
Bernadette got a little closer to him. "Oh no," She said sarcastically. "How dare we become one of those couples. You know, who talk about their feelings and are sweet and do things other than have sex all the time…"
"Well, you know, the sex is one of the perks of having a wife…"
"Oh, just shut up and kiss me, you idiot."
Penny waited, grinning madly as the phone rang. Her heart skipped a beat when he picked up. She had big news to tell him, and she hoped he'd be happy. "Hello?"
"Hey, Daddy." Penny said, twisting her engagement ring around on her finger as she balanced the phone between her ear and her shoulder.
"Hey, honey!" Wyatt responded. "I wasn't expecting to hear from you today!"
"Well, you know…" Penny said in what was supposed to be a casual way. "I just wanted to say hi…"
"What did you do?" Wyatt immediately asked.
"What?" Penny pretended to scoff. "Why do you say that? Can't a girl just call her daddy to tell him she loves and misses him…"
"Yes," Wyatt said. "But that's not you. You don't call me to say hi, you call me when you either screwed up or you want something. Which is it?"
Penny sighed. She better cut to the chase. "Neither." She said. "I have to talk to you about something…You know how me and Leonard got back together?"
"Thank God." Wyatt interjected. "It's good to know my little girl is with someone who has a brain…"
"Daddy."
"Sorry, go ahead."
"Well," Penny continued. "Things are getting pretty serious between us and…"
On the other end of the line, Wyatt laughed. "What, he propose to you?" Penny froze, she even stopped playing with her ring. "Because if he did he didn't ask for my permission…"
Shit. Shit. Shit. Penny thought.
"Penny? Are you still there? Hello?"
Say something, Penny! Use your words! "Ummm…" Penny said, fumbling for a response. "No, of course not…We were wondering if…if you wanted to come visit again soon."
"Of course, sweetie." Wyatt replied. "I'm off work next week, why don't I stop by?"
"Uh-huh, sounds great."
"Great. I'll see you then."
"Uh-huh, bye Daddy."
"Bye sweetie."
Penny was still processing what she'd done when she hung up the phone. She'd just invited her father over next week. Without telling her fiancé. Who her father didn't know was her fiancé. Crap.
Penny looked up from the screen of her phone when she heard Leonard walk in. "Hey, sweetie." He greeted her, but he froze when he saw the look on her face. "Penny, what's wrong?"
She sighed. "…My dad's coming to visit."
If you review I will love you forever and ever!
I think I wrote my HB a little too fluffy before so while this was still a big, emotional speech I wanted to try and keep it IC. And uh-oh, what are Lenny going to do? Next chapter you'll find out...
