Leonard sat down on Penny's couch while she explained the situation to him. "And so," She concluded. "My dad doesn't know we're engaged. And he's coming to visit. Next week."
Leonard didn't say anything at first, simply sitting there and staring at her as he processed all of this information. "I think I have a plan," He finally said. "It just might work."
Penny looked at him, waiting for him to continue. "Well? Tell me about this plan."
"Well," Leonard began. "We have to get un-engaged."
Penny stared at him, confused. "Huh?"
"Sorry," Leonard said. "I was trying to avoid using any big words…" Penny slapped him on the shoulder. "First – ow! And second, what I meant was that we pretend that I haven't proposed to you yet. I'll ask your dad for permission, he'll be thrilled, and then we get married and live happily ever after. Simple."
"Then how do we explain this?" Penny asked, holding up her left hand so he was looking at her engagement ring.
"Take it off," Leonard answered.
Penny immediately pulled her hand back, clutching it against her chest and covering her ring with her free hand. "I don't want to take my ring off…" She said. "It's pretty…"
Leonard sighed, but then he smiled. "You'll get it back."
Penny looked at her ring, and sighed. "Can I have the night to say goodbye?" She asked.
Leonard smiled. "Of course."
Sheldon and Amy were sitting on the couch in Apartment 4A, watching a documentary on The Science Channel. "Did you know that the term 'big bang theory' started off as an insult?" Amy asked.
Sheldon scoffed. "Obviously."
Amy shrugged, and the two of them went back to their show. They were interrupted again when Leonard walked in. "Hey," He said to them, inadvertently walking in front of their view of the TV.
"Hey," Sheldon said, annoyed.
Leonard looked back over his shoulder, realizing what he'd done. "Oh, sorry." He said, before going back to checking something on his computer.
"Leonard," Amy said. "Did you know that the term 'big bang theory' was originally an insult?"
"Really?" Leonard replied. "That's interesting – I didn't know that."
"Obviously." Sheldon whispered to Amy.
"Oh and by the way, you guys." Leonard said. "Penny's father is coming to visit next week."
"And you're telling me this because…?" Sheldon asked, not looking away from the screen.
"The thing is," Leonard explained. "You can't mention the engagement to Wyatt."
Sheldon and Amy looked at him now. "Why?" Amy asked.
"Penny was going to tell him, but it turns out he wanted me to ask permission first. So, I'll ask him while he's here and then we'll act like the engagement just happened."
"Wait," Sheldon interjected. "You're asking me to help deceive Penny's father?"
Leonard sighed. "…Yes."
"So you want me to lie?"
"You don't have to lie," Leonard said. "You can just…not talk to him."
"But what if I run into him on the stairs and he feels the need to exchange friendly chitchat?" Sheldon asked.
Leonard shrugged. "Talk about the weather."
"The weather?" Sheldon repeated, incredulous. "Really? All the time?"
"Yeah," Amy said. "It's hotter in California than in Nebraska."
Sheldon looked from one of them to the other, before sighing and giving in. "I suppose." He conceded.
Leonard forced himself to smile. "Thank you, Sheldon." He said, before he left to go to his room.
Sheldon and Amy continued to watch their documentary in silence for a few moments. Amy turned to Sheldon to comment about the naming of the Higgs boson when she noticed something. "Sheldon?"
"Yes?" Sheldon said, not looking away from the screen.
"Your arm is around me." Amy said.
Now, Sheldon looked at her, and sure enough his arm had somehow found its way around her shoulder. He quickly pulled it back, Amy's brown eyes staring back at him, surprised. "It's a private display of affection," Sheldon said quickly, shocked by his own words. "It's in the New Relationship Agreement."
Amy nodded, still looking shocked at Sheldon's behavior, and went back to watching the documentary.
Sheldon couldn't pay attention for the rest of the documentary. He was too preoccupied thinking about him wrapping his arm around Amy. And about how he missed having her there when he let go.
I don't think this chapter is my best but I wanted to update for you guys. Review?
