Bella Cullen
Edward and I followed Lexi and Beth as they ran down the beach. Lexi had tears pouring from her eyes as she collided with one of her sisters. When the mermaids first started visiting Beth, she asked me if they could have some of her clothes set away from when she turned that age. The mermaids were naked when they were in their human form so we had agreed and bought a durable box to keep them in on the mermaid beach. That way whenever they visited they had clothes to wear. As we reached them they were still getting dressed but Lexi didn't care. She was in her sister's arms in seconds. There was only two there though, I was sure Lexi said she had 3 older sisters.
"Where's Elle?" she asked her sisters.
"She can't come Lexi, she got married." They told her, Lexi looked distraught.
"She knows now that her sister is married she'll never be able to see her again, her husband won't let her" Edward explained to me. I looked over to Lexi sadly.
"What took you so long?" Lexi sobbed to her sisters.
"The Nel. They wouldn't allow us to visit you; father has been causing hell for you Lexi. He's so angry with them" Nina told her. Lexi smiled softly.
"The storm last night was that Cato?" Beth asked them. They nodded.
"He told us to go, to come see you and so we did. The Nel got angry but father was even angrier. He said that they couldn't stop us going to see you, it wasn't against the law to go to the human world, especially when we weren't married." Nina and Arya were both still hugging Lexi tightly.
"How have you been Lexi?" Arya spoke for the first time.
"Better than I expected, Beth's family is amazing and they love me and I couldn't ask for anyone better" Lexi said and smiled over at me, I smiled back.
"Im glad" Arya said and kissed her sister's head.
"Tell father he doesn't need to worry about me. I already have a momma and a daddy that love and protect me. Its actually really fun being in the human world, I went into a city! It was so amazing" She beamed up at her sisters. Her sisters smiled down at her.
"Im so glad you're ok Lexi" Nina said and kissed her sister again.
"What's going to happen when you go back?" she asked.
"I get married in two days Lexi. We wanted to come see you before we couldn't anymore" Nina said sadly. Lexi had fresh tears in her eyes.
"Arya?" she asked.
"10 days" she told her. Lexi hugged her sisters tighter, the tears falling.
"We wanted to see you one last time" Nina said, she too was crying. My heart was breaking at the scene.
"Father is still fighting though Lexi, you might be able to come back. He loves you so much and we miss you" Arya told her sister.
"Come back?" Lexi gasped. I felt like screaming no and pulling Lexi into my arms but I stood there in shock. I had given everything to that little girl, could I let her go?
If that's what she wanted. Yes. I would have to, her happiness and safety meant more than anything.
"Father won't go down without a fight" Nina added. Beth had walked over to us and Edward picked her up. Lexi turned to look at us watching them; her little face went into a frown, tears still in her eyes when she turned back to her sisters.
"How? How can they let me back when im just human now?" she asked.
"The Nel accessed the magic of our gods to turn you into a human; they can access them again to turn you back"
"That's never been done before" Lexi said.
"No but no one has ever had someone fight for them before" Arya said softly.
"Im human now I can't go back" Lexi said in disbelief.
"If you can be made human it can be reversed." Nina tried to persuade her. My heart was sinking in my chest but I had to remind myself that I only wanted Lexi to be happy.
"I don't want to come back" she admitted. I wanted to jump and sing.
"What?" Arya asked.
"I love you, I will always love you and Elle and our brothers and our father but I don't want to go back. I want to stay with Beth and Bella and Edward. They're my family now. They love me" Lexi said to her shocked sisters.
"But Lexi, no one has ever gone against the Nel, father is risking his life and the life of our family for you" Arya told her.
"Well tell him not to. Tell him im happy where I am and I want to stay with my momma." She said to them.
"Your mother is in there" Arya said pointing to the ocean.
"No my momma is there" Lexi said and pointed to me. "Bella has shown me more love than our real momma ever did. Bella is the best mother in the world and she loves me like im her daughter. I want to stay with Bella and Edward"
"Lexi" Nina said softly but looked over to us standing there. "Ok" she sighed and hugged her sister tighter.
"What?! No Lexi you have to come back" Arya countered.
"Shes happy Arya, who are we or father to take that away from her? You knew she was always fascinated with the human world; she never would have been able to live in it if she was still one of us. She would have been married at 19 and never would have seen the sun again." Nina explained to her sister. "Let's leave her be, shes happy and shes protected. Shes with Beth" Arya had fresh tears in her eyes and she hugged both her sisters.
"We love you Lexi" she told her.
"I know, I love you too but I belong here" she said passionately. The ocean was picking up. The storm returning.
"We need to go back" Arya said looking at the ocean.
"Please get a message to me; I want to make sure you're ok." Lexi told them.
"I'll come back in 9 days before my marriage and I'll tell you what happens. We'll be fine Lexi" Arya said and kissed her forehead. The water was onto the beach now; as if it was trying to reach the girls and pull them back into the water. I was getting nervous as it lapped at Lexi's feet. She hugged her sisters tightly before running up the beach to me.
I lifted her into my arms and sighed with relief. She was safe now. She wrapped her arms and legs around me and rested her head on my shoulder as we watched her sister's dive into the violent water. The water stilled immediately as if it knew they were mermaids again.
"Are you ok?" I asked Lexi. She nodded and looked behind me. I turned to see our family coming towards us; Esme, Carlisle, Eddie, Chloe, Jake and Nessie.
"Everything ok?" Nessie asked. I smiled at my daughter then kissed Lexi's cheek.
"Everything's perfect" I said and Lexi smiled widely. We all walked back to the house when the phone rang. I let Lexi down onto her feet and went over to answer it.
"Hello Sarah" I smiled at the caller ID. I already had a sneaking suspicion as to why she was calling, so did Edward.
"Hi grandma" she called happily. "I hear my mother and father are there. Any chance I could speak to one of them please?"
"Of course honey" I replied and grabbed Nessie's attention. She took the phone from me with the biggest smile on her face. I didn't think Sarah would tell Nessie over the phone but I was sure Nessie would have a permanent smile when Sarah told her the news. Sarah and Nahuel had come to Isle Isabella four weeks ago. Beth had been out playing somewhere on the island at the time and Sarah and Nahuel just passed by to talk to us. We had always told them they were welcome here at any time and any time they ever wanted to go to the moon pool they were also welcome. It was a major hint from us that any time they wanted children they didn't need to ask permission to go make them. Edward and I had a hunch that they didn't just come to see us that day, that they had another agenda but I wasn't 100% sure yet. I knew Sarah would want to tell her mother before us if she was pregnant and I didn't blame her. If she was pregnant it wasn't long before she gave birth, if she hadn't already.
"Hello baby girl!" she chimed happily. I heard Sarah laugh on the other end.
"Hey mom, are you going to come see us soon?" I heard her ask.
"Oh yes. I was hoping by the end of the week. Are you busy at all or can you find time to see your old mother?" she joked.
"I always have time for you momma" Sarah answered and Nessie smiled wider.
"Then we'll be there on Friday if that's ok? I haven't asked your father yet but I doubt he'll deny seeing his princess" she joked again. Sarah laughed.
"Ok see you soon mom, I really miss you"
"I miss you too. See you then" Nessie said and hung up, her grin was huge as she skipped towards Jacob sitting on the couch. I was almost mirroring her smile as I followed her and sat by Edward.
"Jakey" Nessie said. Jacob looked at her immediately.
"What do you want babe?" he asked. She smiled at him.
"To go see Sarah" she said. "This Friday"
"But… but" Jacob stuttered and looked to Edward. I wasn't sure why. Edward shrugged. "I suppose" he sighed turning back to his wife perched on his lap. She pouted and frowned at him. It made her look like she was 5. I held back my laugh with a smile.
"What?" she asked. "Don't you want to go see our daughter?"
"Of course I do. I just hoped you could wait a few months and I was going to take you for our anniversary" he said with reluctance.
"Aw honey" Nessie said and hugged him. "We can go again" she smiled widely and gave him a quick peck on his lips.
"I suppose" he said with a shrug and wrapped his arms around her hips.
"I really miss her" Nessie said softly.
"I know you do" he said, all reluctance gone from his voice as he stroked the hair from her cheek and put it behind her ear. "Of course we will go" he added and she smiled sweetly at him.
"Jakey" Beth said next, Jacob groaned slightly, looking away from his wife in front of him to Beth at his side. I don't think Beth saying 'Jakey' worked in quite the same way, I almost laughed. Beth was smiling widely at him, Lexi was right behind her.
"Yes Beth?" he asked.
"Will you come on a run with us?" she asked.
"Why me?" Jacob frowned.
"Because I like wolf Jacob" Beth smiled. Jacob smiled wider.
"Sure squirt!" he grinned.
"Yay!" Beth cheered and Lexi smiled wider.
"What are you planning Jacob?" Nessie frowned as Jacob lifted her off his lap and placed her on her feet. Jacob just grinned at her and followed the girls out the back. Eddie and Edward were laughing as Jacob left.
"What's he doing?" Nessie asked.
"You'll see" Eddie smiled wrapping his arms around Nessie's shoulders from behind as they both watched the patio doors where Jacob had left with Beth and Lexi. I heard a sudden squeal and I looked straight outside to see Jacob chasing Beth and Lexi. They were laughing too as they screamed, Jacob caught Lexi first, flipped her into the air with his nose and caught her on his back, she giggled loudly and gripped onto his fur as he took off running after Beth next.
"Oh poor girls" Nessie laughed.
"They love it" Edward smiled. I moved over to him and he tucked his arm around my waist as I leant into his side.
Jacob played with Lexi and Beth on the beach all morning. I began making lunch around 1pm and Jacob came in, in just his shorts with Lexi over his shoulder and Beth tucked under his arm. They were both giggling infectiously.
"We're hungry momma bear" he said and sat Beth and Lexi down on a stool each. They both looked flustered and worn out, Lexi more than Beth.
"Call me that again and I'll bite you" I warned my best friend and placed lunch in front of him and Lexi. He just grinned at me with his very white teeth. "Renesmee!" I called my daughter for lunch. Beth hopped off the stool to make room for Renesmee and went over to the fridge for a bottle of blood. Nessie came and sat down next to her husband.
"You look like you've been enjoying yourself" she grinned at him. He smiled down lovingly at her.
"I forgot how much fun kids can be" he said and continued to stuff his face with food. She smiled at him again.
Edward came in that moment and Beth rushed over to him lifting her arms for him to pick her up. He did so and then threw her in the air; she giggled loudly as he caught her and pulled her into a tight hug. I smiled widely as he then span her around, her hair spreading out as she put her head back and laughed again.
"You're going to make her sick" I told my husband as he bounced her up and down and tickled her, Beth hadn't stopped laughing all day and she just drank a bottle full of blood. Beth was gasping for air through her laughs.
"I think she's going to stop breathing before she throws up" Eddie laughed joining us in the kitchen with Chloe. Carlisle and Esme were outside with the builders surveying the building work.
"I remember dad tickling us until we couldn't breathe" Nessie laughed looking at Eddie.
"So do I" Eddie laughed. "Chantelle hated it"
"Chantelle was a wimp as a child" Jacob chimed in.
"She was not" Nessie defended her sister.
"She was too. You were a lot tougher than her. She would cry at the tiniest thing" Jacob said.
"She was the baby" Nessie frowned.
"Actually Eddie was. She was just spoilt" Jacob added.
"Weren't we all?" Eddie asked. "Chantelle was just more fragile than us I suppose"
"She's certainly not like that now. She's super awesome and powerful now. We were in Italy not long ago. She and Zio control the Volturi so well. It's not even just Zio now. Chanti is a huge part of it. She controls the guard almost. It's quite frightening, especially when one of them goes out of line. They don't have Chelsea anymore to control the guard's loyalties so they use Chanti's ability. They all worship her practically" Nessie explained. I hadn't seen Chantelle and Zio in nearly 40 years. Whilst we spoke through Skype and on the phone I hadn't seen them in Italy for a very long time. I found it hard to go there since the death of Allesandra. It brought back so many painful memories; I don't know how our family could deal with living there. I knew it was a long time ago now, most of the family had moved on, I suppose living away from Italy made it harder to go back. They lived there day in and day out with all the reminders of Allesandra. I wasn't forced to think about her every day and that made it harder when I did think about her.
"Well she's a little older now" Jacob laughed. Nessie rolled her eyes and his understatement.
"I wonder if we'll ever all be together again" Chloe said sadly.
"I hope so" Nessie said.
"Im sure we will" I smiled at them. It wouldn't be the same but maybe one day Zio would move the Volturi to America and we could go back to being how we were. We've all had decades apart, doing our own thing, it would be nice to be back together again. After lunch we all went into the living room. Lexi fell asleep, exhausted from playing with Jacob all morning and Beth was chatting away with Eddie and Nessie.
"Beth" Edward said from the piano. "Come on you haven't practiced in a while" he said. "Im letting you off with school for a while the least you can do is practice piano"
"Okay" Beth said and slowly walked over to her father on the piano. I smiled and looked over the back of the couch to watch. She began playing with Edward as if it was easy as breathing. Eddie and Nessie joined them and Edward moved so they could play together. I smiled widely at the sight. I hadn't imagined this; seeing all my children playing the piano together. I took a mental picture as well as a real one with my phone.
"Nessie you're out of practice. You missed three tied notes" Edward told her, she smiled sheepishly at him.
"Sorry daddy"
"What's that?" Lexi gasped, she sat up from where she was sleeping on the far couch and looked over to Beth, Eddie and Nessie. "Is that music?" she asked.
"It's the piano" I smiled at her. She slowly walked over to my other children playing and watched with fascination.
"Could I learn to play?" she asked when they finished.
"Of course you can Lexi. Every Cullen child learns to play the piano" Edward smiled at her.
"Yeah you can't be a Cullen if you don't learn to play" Eddie smiled at her.
"I'd love to learn how to play" she gasped and touched one of the keys. She smiled widely as it played the note.
"We'll integrate it into your school" Edward told her, she looked up at him.
"I have to do school?" she frowned.
"Of course you do, you're human now. You'll live a human life, you need your education" he told her. She frowned deeper.
"I suppose" she mumbled and stood up from the piano.
"It's ok Lexi. It's only 3 days a week." Beth told her and moved from the piano. "And it can be fun sometimes" she said and smiled up at her father. He shook his head in disbelief.
"You girls don't know how important it is" he told them.
"Just get through school once and you'll never have to do it again" Nessie told them before going to find Jacob. I wasn't even sure where he went.
The rest of the day was busy, Esme was in and out with Carlisle discussing the building work; Lexi and Beth went off to play on the island somewhere but they were in and out for food and telling me about what they found; Eddie and Chloe spoke to Holly on Skype all afternoon and Nessie and I tried to clean the house the best we could. It was getting dirtier a lot faster with so many people in the house, I was only used to Edward, Beth and I. By the time dinner came around it was 8pm and the girls were in bed at 9. Nessie and Jake went to bed around 11 and Eddie and Chloe disappeared at that time too. It was just Edward and I with Carlisle and Esme.
I lay across Edwards lap, feeling exhausted mentally from the day. Edward kissed my temple and hair line.
"Want to watch a movie love?" he asked.
"No" I mumbled and snuggled closer to him. He chuckled and continued his conversation with Carlisle and Esme as I closed my eyes and relaxed the best I could before my kids woke up again.
This was going to end on a cliff hanger but I think leaving the last 2 on cliff hangers was enough for now so I changed the chapter slightly. Next chapter will be Nessie's pov when she goes to see Sarah :)
