Day Eight:

Charisma Dayton (D9 F 17)

I sit on the hard ground as I listen to Isaac's loud snores. It's a surprise he hasn't attracted the careers with the noise. It's nearly five in the morning, which means I've been taking watch for four hours. I decide to wake Isaac to turn the watch over to him, since I can barely keep my eyes open. I shake him to wake him up, and once I'm positive he's wide awake, I lie down, and let my drowsiness overcome me.

When I wake up, I immediately know that something's wrong. The clock reads six o'clock, and Isaac is snoring next to me. That idiot! He was supposed to be keeping watch! And that's when I smell the smoke, feel the heat, and hear the crackle of a fire burning close by. I see flames creeping through the crack under the door. "Isaac!" I scream. "Isaac! There's a fire! Get up! We've got to get out of here!"

We scramble out of our spot behind the blackboard, and run over to the door. I open the door, and a fireball shoots at my head. "Duck!" I yell to Isaac, who's right behind me. The fireball narrowly misses our heads. We continue towards the stairwell, which is fortunately only a few feet away. We walk down the stairs to the first floor. "Now what?" I ask.

"That closet," Isaac says, pointing to a door near the lunchroom. "We'll be close enough to hear what the careers are staying, and they'll never think we'd hide so close."

"Okay," I say. I'm still mad at him for falling asleep while on guard duty, but the closet does seem like the place to go.

Fusion Sanders (D4 M 16)

I wake up and spot Candy awake next to me. It was her night for watch. "Morning," she mumbles, munching on some crackers.

"Good morning," I say as I reach for the dried fruit. I notice our food supply is starting to run low. However, considering we're in the final five, we probably won't need to restock. My guess is we'll be done in one or two days.

I suddenly realize there wasn't a feast this year. Most years, they have one, so I wonder why this year was different. Maybe the Gamemakers thought the action was moving along fast enough. Maybe everyone had everyone had everything they needed, so the Gamemakers didn't think anyone would show up. Whatever the reason, I'm kind of sad that they didn't have one this year. Usually, the careers come out on top during the feast and end up killing a bunch of other tributes. I could have gotten a few more kills on my kill list.

I suppose it's too late to have a feast now. Usually they just let the final five or so battle it out on their own. If they had a feast now, the other two tributes probably wouldn't come. They would know that they're outnumbered, so it would be stupid for them to show up.

Candy Lux (D2 F 18)

I sit on my sleeping bag, eating my crackers. I notice Fusion is staring out into space. I wonder what he's thinking about; probably making a mental list of ways to kill District Nine. Soon, Crimson wakes up, and Fusion brings up the topic that is on all of our minds.

"So," he says. "What are we going to do today? We've got three careers left, and there are two other tributes left; possibly allied. I think we should go hunting today, and leave one career back as a guard. Even if District Nine shows up, the guard could hold the pair of them off until the other two get here, since all the upper floors are on fire. So, Crimson, I think it's your turn to take guard."

"My turn?" Crimson asks, fuming. "I don't want to sit here and guard while you two are off tribute hunting. Why do I have to guard?"

"Because I said so," says Fusion, glaring at Crimson. "If you have a problem with that, you can pull out that spear of yours, but that'll give you a nice knife in the chest."

Crimson's hand flickers toward his spear, and for a second, it looks like he is prepared to fight Fusion. However, when he murmurs, "Alright," through clenched teeth, I know I'm wrong. Crimson wouldn't fight Fusion unless they were in the final two together. I'm not saying they're friends; Crimson just knows Fusion is faster with his knives than he is with his spear.

Isaac Lysander (D9 M 18)

After listening to the careers' plan, Charisma turns to me. "So what do you think?" she asks. "Should we go for the guard?"

"Yes," I say certainly. "That will make the odds even; two careers against two other tributes."

"But, since the second floor is now on fire, we're going to have like thirty seconds. And if the guard yells, the other two will be there in a matter of seconds."

"Don't worry," I say. "We have the element of surprise on our hands. We can definately get Crimson; you can shoot an arrow at him. And if Crimson lets out a yell as he dies and attracts the other two, it's okay. It'll be two against two. We'll have to fight them eventually, so we might as well do it now."

To my surprise, Charisma throws her arms around me, and embraces me in a hug. I realize she's scared. We could both be dead by tonight. "Okay," she says, pulling away. "I'm ready."

Once we hear the careers' footsteps fade, Charisma and I dash out of the closet. We run up to the lunch room door. I spot Crimson digging through supplies, his back to us. "Okay, get him Charisma," I whisper.

Charisma loads her bow. She pulls back the arrow, and focuses on Crimson. She lets it fly, and it sails towards Crimson. Just before it hits him, Crimson whips around. He lets out a scream as it flies through his chest. A cannon goes off. If all that didn't attract the attention of the other careers, I don't know what will. Sure enough, when I turn around, I spot Candy and Fusion running towards us.
