Maia woke up to a large bucket of water being dumped on her head. She yelped and jumped up, onto to fall out of bed and flop onto the floor. laughter reached her ears and she didn't even need to open her eyes to know who was behind this.

"Race!" She yelled.

"Sh! The other boys are still sleepin'!"

"Not anymore! What's goin' on 'ere?" Jack asked, walking over to them and rubbing sleep out of his eyes. Once he saw Race with a bucket and Maia drenched with water he immediately started laughing.

"It's not funny!" Maia protested.

"Your right, it's not. Race that was very mean." Specs said. Maia could tell he was lying. It wasn't detective work, the boy was smiling and high-fiving behind her back.

"You guys are ridiculous." She grumbled. She spotted a fresh set of clothes on the foot of her bed and grabbed them. After changing into the brown trousers, white long-sleeved shirt, and tan vest in the bathroom she walked downstairs. Race was right behind her.

"Maia I'se sorry! Come on, it was a joke!" She shook her head.

"I dunno Race. You don't seem sorry enough to me," she winked to Jack, who smiled and shook his head. Race reached out and grabbed her shoulder.

"How about this. Will you come to da Race's with me today? Please? I really am sorry." His face was overrun with guilt.

"Oh, ok. If it will make you feel better." She teased. He smiled and started walking.

"Oh! And Race?"

"Yeah?"

"You are too easy." She ran past him, leaving him standing there like a fish out of water.

"You are so dead Flame!"

"You have to catch me to kill me, slow poke!" She laughed. They ran down the road, dodging horses and accidentally knocking a scab to the ground...yes, it was an accident. Not that it made much different, they didn't care anyhow.

Finally the arrived at the track. She followed Race to a seat in the back corner of the bleachers and sat down.

"Did you place any bets?" Maia asked. Race, who was focused on the race, snapped to attention.

"Wha?" She laughed.

"Did you place any bets?'

"Oh, no. Come with me?" She nodded. The walked down to the betting stand and Race placed his bets on a horse. Maia studied him.

"Do you really think that one will win?"

"It's won every race dis week."

"Well, I'm not so sure. I'd go with the one next to it." She said, pointing out a slightly smaller, white horse. He laughed.

"Flame, really? I've been here way longer than you, I know what I'se is doing." She raised an eyebrow.

"Oh yeah?"

"Yeah." She shook her head and smiled. The man at the desk looked back and forth at them both, trying to determine the relationship between them.

Race, not thinking, took her hand and let her to the concession stand.

"Do you want anything?" He asked. Maia glanced down at their hands and he quickly let go, blushing.

"Water, but I can pay."

"No, I will pay. I poured water on you, so dis is my apology." Maia rolled her eyes and he handed her the water.

"Thanks."

"Don't mention it. Look! Our horses are racing! Time for me to win!" He ran back to their seats and she followed behind him.

The gun went off and the horses burst into action. Race's horse quickly pulled ahead, making the crowd roar with eagerness. However, as the horses neared the finish line, Maia's horse was neck to neck with Race's.

"Go!" Race yelled, jumping to his feet. Maia copied him.

"You can do it!" Maia's horse pulled out in front, winning the race.

"Whoo! Yeah!" She cheered.

"How did you know it would win?" Race asked, shocked. Maia shrugged.

"Honestly? I just thought that it was the prettiest one." Race laughed, hugging her. At first she stiffened from surprise, but quickly relaxed at hugged him back.

"This was fun." He said.

"Yeah," Maia agreed. She looked up into his eyes and smiled. He did the same. They leaned in closer, lips only a few centimeters apart, when a whistle blew. It was the police.

"What do they want?" Race asked.

"Maia!" One of the cops called out.

"Shit." She muttered.

"Language!" Race gasped.

"Not now!" She took his hand and lead him down the bleachers, hiding in the mob of people. They ducked under the bleachers before anyone could see them.

"Maia what did you do?" Race asked. Maia sat down on the ground and leaned her head on his shoulder.

"Sh. I didn't do nothing! I don't know why they want me." Race wrapped an arm around her and she closed her eyes. Th cops ordered everyone out of the stands and the pair could hear their footsteps clambering overtop of their heads.

"Maia! Come out now and the punishment won't be as harsh!" One of the cops shouted.

What the hell did I do? She thought. It took an hour, but the cops finally cleared out. Maia let out a sigh of relief.

"Come on, let's get to the lodging house and find out what's going on." Maia nodded, and the two of them crept out of the bleachers.

Hi! Sorry for the language, but I thought that it goes along with that was going on.
