They made their way back to the lodging house. Once they stepped inside, the playful atmosphere turned cold immediately. Every eye turned to them.
"Geez, Race! I thought you were just taking her out to the race!" Mush asked, raising a little laughter from the boys. Maia got a glance at herself through a mirror a she did look like a mess.
"Where is Jack?" Maia asked.
"Why?" Mush responded, obviously trying to press her buttons. She gave an exasperated look.
"Mush, please." His eyes softened and he nodded.
"Okay, follow me." Race took Maia's hand again and they followed Mush up the stairs. Jack was in the empty room at the end of the hallway. Mush knocked three times before Jack finally opened the door.
"What?" He asked.
"These two said they needed to talk to you," Mush said. Jack groaned.
"Can you come back later? I'se is very busy." Jack said.
"Jack, please." Maia pleaded. Jack sighed.
"Fine, come on in." The three of them walked in. Maia let go of Race's hand and walked over to sit on the window sill. Race and Mush stood leaning against the door.
"So, what was so important?" Jack asked. Race looked at Maia and met her eye. He nodded, urging her to tell the story.
"Well, Race and I went out to watch the race, but near da end da bulls came and started shoutin' out my name. We hid under da bleachers, but I don't even know what I did!" Maia said. Jack squinted his eyes.
"So you is sure you didn't do nothing?"
"Positive." She nodded.
"Well, sorry Maia but I don't want you leaving the lodging house until we figure out what is going on." Jack said. Maia ran up to him.
"What! No!"
"Yes! It's apparently not safe right now," Jack started.
"Jack we are on strike! It's never safe!" Maia interrupted.
"-and the last thing I need is another one of my newsies in da refuge!" His voice rose. Maia looked at Race and Mush.
"Please tell him that is unfair!" The boys bit their lips.
"Um, sorry Flame but I think that it's for the best." Mush said. Maia rolled her eyes.
"Wimps," she said, shoving past them and running up to the roof.
She sat down on the ledge and put her chin in her hands. It looked like she wasn't going anywhere anytime soon. Jack may be their leader but that didn't mean he could tell them what to do! Okay...maybe it did. But that's not the point. Maia was sure that she had proven herself to him more than once!
If I was still being a boy Jack wouldn't even care. Maia thought. She stared at the people walking below her, trying to calm herself down. Suddenly, she heard whispers come from the window. She inched closer to hear what was being said.
"Listen, we's gonna meet at Meddas' tonight, okay? It's a rally. We gotta pump up da boys and show da bulls dat we can't be messed with. I need you to go to Brooklyn to spread da word. Okay?" That was Jack.
"Okay, what time do I tell 'em?" Specs, no doubt.
"Tell 'em ta be dere at eight." She heard Specs leave the room and close the door. She walked back to the ledge and smiled.
"A rally, huh?" She muttered. Forget what Jack said, she was going to make sure she was there.
"Flame!" Jack called. She wouldn't respond when he said Maia. However, he still had no answer. Swearing under his breath he walked up to the bunk room and opened the door. She was sitting on her bunk glaring at the wall in front of her.
"Flame, I'm sorry. Dis is for ya own protection. Now, promise me ya won't leave da lodging house?" He asked, sitting next to her. She rolled her head over to look at him.
"Can you at least tell me where you is goin?" Maia asked.
"Sorry, I know ya will try ta find us if I do." He smiled and punched her playfully on the shoulder. Standing up, he gave her a small smile and left. Once the cost was clear Maia quickly opened the window and climbed out. She stuck to the ally ways to make sure none of the Manhattan boys would see her. At twenty after eight, she slipped in.
The rally was loud. No, loud was not the word to use. It was deafening. The boys were crowded into every open space in the theatre. She silently walked up to the stairs to the balcony where the Brooklyn boys were sitting. She spotted Andrew talking to one of the bigger kids.
"Andrew," she whispered, walking up to him. Andrew said one last thing to the other boy then turned to her.
"Maia!" He gasped, pulling her into a hug.
"Hey." She said, smiling. When they pulled away Andrew ran his fingers through her hair.
"Maia, I miss you! How have you been?" He asked.
"I've been pretty good. I'm staying with the Manhattan boys at their lodging house." She said.
"Good. They treating you okay? I wanted to come see you but Spot is getting more uptight and is always on edge and dad-" he stopped talking.
"It's okay. And yes, I'm just like one of the guys. I mean, Jack can be a little over-protective. Like now, I'm not really supposed to be here. He wants me to stay in the lodging house because the bulls-"
"Oh gosh, he was serious." Andrew muttered, his eyes wide. Maia stared at him.
"Serious about what?" Maia asked.
"Maia, go home. It's not-" Andrew started, but was interrupted by Jack.
"Newsies! It's time we stand up for our rights!" The boys cheered.
"Andrew? What is going on?" She asked again. Andrew threw his hands in the air.
"Just go! Please, Maia!" Just then, all chaos broke loose. The bulls flooded the theatre. Maia muttered under her breath and ran for an exit. Andrew followed her. They ducked and ran around people, but when they got to an exit it was guarded by more police men. Unfortunately, one of them spotted Maia.
"There she is! Get her and Kelly!" He commanded. Maia ran the opposite way.
The Newsies put up a good fight. The left unconscious a few of the police, but they couldn't hold them off for forever. In the end, it was every man for himself. Jack was finally captured, as well as Maia.
"Take them both to court!" Snyder yelled.
"Both? Who else did ya want...no!" Jack yelled. Maia was pulled into position beside him.
"Maia! I told you-" He never got to finish, because in a matter of seconds both of their worlds turned black.
I hoped you liked it! As said before hopefuly my computer will be fixed son so I can update more regularly.
Until next time, thanks for reading! Review please:)
