"Are you ready for a fight, Caroline?" He breathed.
Caroline immediately shot up from her dream. She could have sworn it was real. She could feel his breath on her face as he whispered her name. Drenched in sweat, she plopped back down glaring at the ceiling into the darkness. Stop it Caroline! This is ridiculous. She mentally scolded herself. It was not real. None of it! She told herself as she drifted back asleep.
The next few months flew by as Caroline and Elena started their freshman year at Whitmore. Between registering for classes, choosing a major for Tyler and herself and more importantly finding the right color palette for the girls' dorm room, Caroline rarely had time to think about her night with Klaus. She couldn't wrap her head around her feelings for him so she decided to focus on Tyler and their upcoming freshman year together. She knew that her and Klaus' "thing" wasn't finished but she needed time to just be "Caroline: college freshman" and she will figured out the rest later.
Besides, she was really excited for Tyler to come back after months of being away from him. He was her first love, after all.
"Caroline! Are you here?!" screams Elena as she rushes through the door.
Caroline jumps out of the shower and quickly wraps a towel around herself as she flashes towards a distraught Elena.
"Elena? What happened? Is everything okay?"
"No," Elena sobs as she falls to the floor. "She's gone, Caroline. She gave up her life and we didn't even know!"
"What? Who is gone, Elena?" Caroline kneels down to try and console her sobbing friend.
"I can't even say it. I can't believe this is happening!" screams Elena.
"What?! Tell me!"
"It's…Bonnie. Caroline, Bonnie's dead."
"WHAT?! Bonnie is with her mother. We just talked to her."
"No, we didn't! It was Jer. She sacrificed herself to bring him back and he promised to help her keep up her story from the other side" cried Elena.
"So all of the texts and emails? That was Jeremy?! Elena, that was months ago. She…died months ago," Caroline said as she slowly sunk onto the edge of her bed.
"This can't be happening…" she mumbles softly as Elena continues to weep on the floor beside her.
This has taken Caroline by complete surprised. For months, they had been exchanging emails with "Bonnie" only to learn that she had been dead the entire time. They had been so wrapped up in their own lives that they didn't even think about the hows and whys surrounding Jeremy's return but now it all made sense. Over the last three months, there had only been communication through email and text, never once did anyone talk to Bonnie. She didn't even show up for her own father's funeral.
"How did we miss this? Oh my God, Elena! " Caroline said as tears began to fall from her face.
"I don't know," Elena whispered as she moved to the bed and wrapped her arm around Caroline's shoulder.
"I think I am going to…" Caroline said as she ran to the sink, throwing her head over to vomit.
Elena rushed to her side to hold her hair as Caroline spit up day old blood.
"Are you okay, Care?"
"Yeah, I just need to lie down for a second."
