Chapter Thirty One
It had just begun to rain as Jake started his patrol. Paul had just phased and was starting to run his own patrol along the Western boundary line along the ocean, the one that Jake had last patrolled four hours ago.
It was only a three, school had only let out ten minutes ago and already he was feeling anxious to get back to Bella. Not that he didn't feel like that whenever he was not with her. Today, however he'd barely seen her today since she'd been so busy helping the other students with their work, although it made him want to burst with pride when she did so. He was so fortunate to have such a smart and hard working imprint. Not to mention she was beautiful, and so soft, and at the moment all that he wanted to do was pin her against their bed and ravish her into the early morning hours.
If you wouldn't mind saving those thoughts until your patrol is over, Jake? Paul growled in annoyance at his alpha's thoughts.
Can't help myself, asshole. When you've imprinted you'll understand. Jake responded, not caring at all how Paul felt for Jake's thoughts. Bella was always occupying Jake's mind. No matter what he was doing or where he was going, she was always in the forefront of his mind. What she was thinking, what she looked like, if he could detect any distress from their bond. She was a constant, the rest of the world now only consisted of variables to him.
I'm not going to run this patrol for the next nine hours if you keep thinking like that. I don't want to picture Bella spread eagle on your bed. Paul snorted, and Jake growled lowly at the thought of another male thinking of Bella that way, although he couldn't stop the new thoughts that invaded his mind.
Her small, curvy body had him in a frenzy. Petal soft, creamy white skin that glowed in the moonlight, and trembled under his lips. Jacob was convinced that there was no greater sight than his mate in the throes of ecstasy. And the noises she made were perfection. Such soft, breathy noises and gasps and long, uncontrolled moans of unadulterated pleasure that he was honored to give to her gorgeous body.
Shut the fuck up! Paul growled again and Jake shook his head as he continued to run through the forest. Paul was correct. Despite the fact he wanted nothing more than to run back to the cottage on the edge of his father's property, he was on work-time. He had to be focused in order to protect his tribe.
Make sure you stick tight to the treaty line. I want a fresh scent there so that there's no mistaking whose land this is. Jake called mentally to Paul, who agreed wordlessly and edged his path closer to the treaty line.
Ever since the night that Bella had had her meeting with the Cullens Jake was determined to lay a thick scent close to the line. Just because they said they were willing to help keep Bella safe from their psycho son, didn't mean they wouldn't try to get over the line again.
Jake's thoughts spiraled towards the youngest Cullen. The one who'd tried to take his Bella. His vision blurred for a minute as the aggression surged through him however his mind was sharpened acutely, and he pushed himself faster through the thick forest of the reservation, along the cliffs that lined the edge of the sea.
As he passed first beach something twinged inside of him. Slowing down, Jake felt the twinge inside of his heart, an uncomfortable buzzing that made his hackles rise and a growl rip from his mouth. He'd know that feeling no matter what form he was in.
Something's wrong with Bella. Jake snarled in his mind, startling Paul who had tripped over a fallen log at the unanticipatedly vicious voice of his alpha.
I'm right by your dad's house, I can check on the cottage if you want. Paul said, slightly annoyed, but willing to appease his alpha if it meant that he would calm down.
Do it, quickly. Jake growled again, watching through Paul's mind's eye as he ran between the trees and approached the small cottage. Just as he came out of the brush a jolt of excruciating pain seized Jake's body. His muscles locked, and it felt as though a python was crushing his torso. His heart beat so loud that his ears began to ring. The rush of adrenaline that flowed through him had him running. Running as fast as he could. Again the searing pain gripped him, and he let out a loud, piercing howl of anguish into the sky.
Jake! Bella isn't in the cottage. Her car isn't here and there are no fresh scents around the property. What the fuck is happening to you? Paul's voice managed to grit out as he felt the ripples of pain that came from his alpha. Jake however was unable to form a complete sentence.
Bella, Bella, Bella, Bella. Something's wrong. My mate. My Bella. Where is she? he chanted in his head. And then suddenly, as quickly as it had started, the pain vanished from Jake's body and his large form fell to the ground in a heap of russet fur. Laying on the cool earth, his mind was frazzled, incoherent thoughts of his mate spewing out in jagged sentences. He could barely hear Paul's threats and frantic questions, nor could he detect when three other pack members phased into his mind.
Jake, what's going on? Sam's timbre sounded inside of Jake's skull. While Sam no longer had any alpha power, the timbre was enough to wake Jake up. Pulling his large body off the ground, Jake let out a growl, and turned his body east.
Something's wrong with Bella. Something is completely wrong. That pain, Sam. I've never felt anything like it from the bond. She's hurt and she's scared. Jake responded, snarling at the end at the thought of his mate in harms way.
You need to calm down, Jake. She's probably at her father's house. Maybe she cut herself cooking or something. Leah snapped in his mind, although he could detect some anxiousness beneath her calm demeanor. She too had started jogging towards Forks.
No. This is wrong. And I'm going to kill whatever fucking thing hurt her this badly. Jake stated. With that final statement, no one else spoke. Sam had joined Leah on her run to Forks and Jake pushed himself through the woods. He ignored Paul's voice as he filled in the other members of the pack that had phased and were wondering why their alpha had called them. From Leah's eyes he could see the back of the house that Charlie owned. Listening intently, Leah's ears detected a heartbeat within the house, but that was not all.
Jake… There's a leech's scent around here. Sam's voice echoed through Jake's mind, and for a moment all Jake saw was red. If it had been possible, Jake would have run even faster. His mind was a jumble of heart searing worry for his mate and a hatred so deep that it had the entire pack on edge.
It's not a Cullen. Sam continued, and while this confused Jake, it did not calm him.
As soon as he reached the woods out back of Charlie's house he saw Leah and Sam, both tense and standing twenty feet apart behind the house. Jake phased seamlessly back into his human form, without breaking his stride as he ran up to the back door of Charlie's home, ripping open the door and breathing deeply.
Bella's scent was there, but it was almost an hour old. She'd been here. And now she was gone.
However the scent that drove Jake's wolf into overdrive was the sickening, scent of decaying flesh hanging in the air.
Jake's vision went red and he reached down, picking up one of the wooden chairs at the table and whipping it across the room, having it shatter against the wall under the force of his throw. A loud snarl erupted from his mouth as he walked through the dark house, although the darkness was hardly a nuisance to him.
He could hear the footsteps of another running into the house, and he turned to see Leah looking around the dark kitchen, staring at the splinters laying on the ground. Her face was pulled into a stone cold glare as she took in the scent around her, turning her eyes towards Jake's feral gaze.
"The heartbeat is coming from upstairs," Leah said in a tight voice.
"Go check," Jake commanded and she nodded, dashing up the stairs leading to the second floor from the kitchen. The heartbeat coming from the second floor was a slow thumping that was nothing like his Bella's heart that was light, like a hummingbird's wings.
Walking into the tiny hallway he could smell her sweet scent the strongest and with another snarl his eyes landed on the black patent heel laying on the hardwood floor. His mate was hardly the kind of person to leave her things lying around in other peoples homes. Leaning down he picked up the small shoe and held it in his hands.
His Bella had been taken from him, and she was now in the hands of his mortal enemy.
Jake's body trembled so violently that the black shoe dropped from his hands and his tendons stretched under his skin as he tried to control himself. But at that point there was no controlling himself any longer and he was ripped from his human skin into his wolf form. And not only that, but Jake's human thought process had gently slipped away from his grasp, leaving him a state of feral being that was much more wolf than human.
His mind did not register Leah's frantic calling from upstairs. He also did not care for what Sam was asking him as he entered the Chief's house.
Without pausing, Jake turned and stalked through the kitchen, shoving open the back door and sprinting out into the forest. As soon as he was covered by the forest he phased into his wolf form, his paws tearing into the wet earth as he ran South. His mind was completely given over to the wolf, and hardly a trace of sanity seemed to be left inside.
My Bella.
Bella.
Rip.
Kill.
Bella.
Mine.
Kill.
Mine.
My Bella.
Mine.
Bella. Bella. Bella.
Jacob was inconsolable, he was in complete agony, and he was ready to kill.

When Jacob burst through the underbrush of the woods and through the large field towards the enormous white house, it was as if the Cullen family was waiting for him. They stood in pairs along the back porch of their gigantic home and through animalistic eyes Jake watched as the oldest vampire stepped down and onto the grass.
A subtle warning in the form of a growl emitted from Jake's chest had the vampire holding his hands in front of him as if to surrender. It was then that Jake took note of the fabric in one of his hands.
"Jacob Black, what brings you here?" the blonde vampire asked, his brow creased with concern. In Jake's mind he could see Sam, Jared, Quil, Leah and Paul all stalking out of the forest to join Jacob where he stood.
Sam. the one strained word managed to break through Jake's conscious stream of Bella's name and disjointed plots of death and destruction.
Try and calm down Jake. You're no good to Bella if you can't control yourself. Sam said in his serene voice. Jake tried to acknowledge the attempt, but instead a deep growl rumbled through his chest. Focusing as much as he was able, he watched as same phased back into a human and Carlisle handed him the shorts, which he pulled on quickly.
"Bella has been taken by a vampire," Sam's statement was met with a few gasps of shock. A fresh wave of pain washed over Jacob, and he whined deep in his throat, lowering his body to the ground. Behind Carlisle he could see the other blonde male's brow furrow.
"Was it Edward?" the female with light brown hair asked softly, coming up behind Carlisle and shooting Jacob a glance.
"We do not know… We crossed a scent out back of Chief Swan's house. It was also covering the inside of the house where we found Charlie unconscious in the bathroom. It seemed that someone had knocked his head against the sink. Two of our pack took him to the hospital, but we've come here to ask for your help in order to find his daughter," Sam spoke, another whine leaving Jake.
The pain made his body shiver, his mind streaming a steady line of Bella's name while having bouts of aggression, feeling as though he needed to rip something apart.
"What is wrong with him?" the other blonde male asked in a quiet southern accent. His eyes were trained on Jacob, watching as he snarled and whined under his breath. Sam looked down at his brother laying on the ground. "It feels like he is suffering a withdrawal from a soulmate."
With that small admittance from the other blonde male, came a collection of curious and shocked expressions from the other vampires.
"The Swan girl is his soulmate?" asked the largest male, his voice serious.
"We call them imprints, but yes. Bella is Jacob's mate, and for him, he is unable to handle the knowledge of the danger she has been put in with this turn of events," Sam replied evenly. Jake could hardly give a fuck anymore if the vampires learned that she was going to be the carrier of the next alpha. The only thing that mattered was finding his mate, killing the vampire who'd taken her, and make sure that she never left his sight again.
Carlisle turned slightly and looked back at the rest of his family standing on the porch behind him. The silence that surrounded them had no effect on Jake as the wolf's side of his mind snarled and snapped and growled, filling every part of his being with the need to protect his mate with his life.
"We will help you try and find the vampire that took Ms. Swan. Jasper is very good with strategy, and he will help form a plan," Carlisle said slowly gesturing back at the blonde male.
"How long until we can start following the scent? Every moment she is with them Jacob with descend further into his wolf's mind, becoming baser and more animalistic. Soon we will not be able to stop him from doing whatever it takes to get her back," Sam spoke, and though it was a struggle, Jake barked as the only kind of assent he could manage.
"Tonight. Emmett and Rosalie, you'll have to go to the Chief's house and pick up the scent of the vampire. Alice you'll need to watch their futures once they decide to follow the scent. As soon as we have an idea of what we're up against we will act," Jasper said, nodding at the other vampires he'd indicated with his words.
"May I suggest that one of my brothers goes with them?" Sam asked looking at the largely muscled vampire and the gorgeous blonde one beside him.
"You can't!" Alice called suddenly, then stopped and corrected herself, "I'm sorry, but my visions don't really work whenever you guys are around… I don't know why that is, but I won't be able to see their futures if you are involved in their decisions."
"That's alright, just know that the Swan residence is still under the Pack's jurisdiction," Sam said as he gazed at the vampires levelly. They nodded once and then disappeared as if they hadn't been standing there at all. Alice turned and walked back into the house, followed by Esme and Jasper gestured to Sam for him to talk with him while Carlisle joined.
Jake had started to pant heavily while laying on the ground. His body trembled, muscles jumping like live wires under his skin, his nerves frayed as his human's rational thinking skills battled with the aggressive and protective nature that his wolf possessed. Bella's name was chanted in his head in a steady stream sounding like the drums that called the ancestors. Hypnotic and powerful.
The other wolves stuck close to him, not coming close enough to set off his anger, but keeping a wary eye on their brother, wondering how long his control would hold. Inside of each of the boys they walked a fine line between their human personalities and the wolf that now resided in their consciousness.
No matter how sweet or gentle any of the boys had been before the transformation, they had gained the potential to become a deadly predator. The ability to forgo all feelings of remorse while defending their territory, their pack, and especially their mate. However none of them compared to their alpha.
He had been the fourth to go through the transformation, being only seventeen and the youngest so far. However despite his age, his growth spurt had far surpassed his elders, and so had his aggression. For weeks after his first transformation he had been unable to phase back into his human form, feeding from animals and unable to grasp his ration thinking for days on end. The animalistic needs of the animal that now shared his mind and body were too much to bear in those early weeks, and even before he had imprinted.
No one knew how long it would take him to come back to himself even if they found Bella alive. And there was not one of the brothers that wanted to imagine what their alpha would do if she was found dead. There was a lingering sense of dread and a thick tension that rolled through the pack.
However as they watched their alpha snarling, growling and whining on the ground in earth shattering pain they were caught by surprise as a sudden searing pain ripped through the pack like a tornado. The noise from Jacob was something mixed between a whine of pain and a snarl of pure anger. His ears flattened onto his head and his lips curled up showing his pointed teeth that dripped with saliva. Pulling himself up to his feet his hackles rose and quivered as he growled continuously while the ripples of pain continued to ebb through the members of the pack.
There was no mistaking that Jake was feeling the imprint bond from Bella, and something excruciating was happening to her.
Sam watched from the porch while Jacob closed his eyes tightly, his sinister growl growing in volume until finally it ended with a piercing howl that echoed around them. When Jacob's eyes opened once again Sam found himself rooted to the spot. The iris' that were usually a dark brown, mimicking Jacob's human eyes, were replaced with a ring of bring yellow that glowed menacingly.
The other brothers of the pack paced anxiously around their feral brother, unsure of what to do.
"Our time is up," Sam said quietly while the two vampires beside him carefully watched the russet wolf on the lawn completely change in demeanor.
All traces of the human Jacob Black were gone, and in his place was something infinitely more dangerous.
Jake has gone full-wolf! Leave some feedback if you care too, and thanks for reading!
