Chapter Thirty Three

It seemed to be a stroke of luck that as soon as Jacob had snapped from all human rationality, Jasper's mate Alice had a vision of a mountain path where the scent of the unknown vampire would take them, should they decide to follow it. Without any direction, the Cullens, and the pack had sprung into action.

Jasper had quickly explained that he and his brother would go after Edward first, not letting onto the fact that the wolf pack was trailing them. If the wolves led the hunt, Edward would be able to smell them from a mile away if the wind was right. It was not worth the risk. And so, Sam phased back into his wolf form, and carefully circled the new, feral Jacob that he was faced with.

The russet wolf that usually held an air of authority but also serenity that they all had grown used to after he'd imprinted on Bella, had vanished. His thoughts no longer made sense. They were foreign, dark territory to every member of the pack, and it unnerved them all that their leader was completely unreachable. And yet, Sam had to try.

Jacob. The Cullens have found a scent. They think they know where Bella is. Sam said calmly, trying to maintain eye contact with his brother. He tried to detect some kind of understanding in Jake's mind, but there seemed to be no change.

Bella, Jake. We're going to find Bella. Sam tried again, and instead of having no reaction as he'd anticipated, he saw the briefest glimpse inside of Jake's mind. A snippet of emotion that course through him, a glance of brown eyes, surrounded by thick lashes and alabaster skin.

Let's go get Bella. Sam spoke, and again the surge of emotion flickered through Jake's feral mind, but still he showed no signs of returning to rationality, so instead Sam turned his orders towards the other pack members that surrounded him.

The Cullens will lead and hopefully the scent of the leech will lead us to Bella. If not, then it may give us information as to where she is. We will need the vampire alive, but there is free reign to do whatever it takes to incapacitate it. However, if you catch scent of Bella, do not get in Jacob's way. When we find her, do not touch her. He will perceive you as an enemy and he will attack. He cannot detect any other bonds but the imprint, and while the Jake we all know would never attack his brothers, his wolf has taken over completely. Sam said gravely and all of the boys and Leah gave their mental understanding.

Paul and I will head up the group while Quil, Leah and Jared will bring up the rear. They all agreed, and Sam turned to look at the four Cullens waiting on the porch steps. The sun had sunk low behind the horizon and as twilight engulfed the forest, the Cullens started running, and the Quileute wolves followed. Jake naturally assumed his place at the head of the pack, trotting behind the Cullens, his nose sniffing the air around him. The rest of his brothers watched him warily, unsure of his behavior, but hoping that they would find their leader's mate at the end of the trail.

As they entered the forest, Sam kept a close eye on Jake as he sniffed at the air. In his mind, the rest of the pack could tell that he had scented the Cullen's and while he was following them with curiosity, he had not yet scented the vampire he associated with taking Bella.

The Cullens ran through the forest, completely silent to a human ear, but the wolves could hear them almost three quarters of a mile in front of them. The sky had grown dark all around them. As they passed far behind the Chief's house the wind rustled through the dead fallen leaves on the ground, and on it brought the sickening stench of death unlike the scorching sweet scent of the Cullens.

The pack froze as a deep growl rolled out of Jacob's chest.

Remember what I said. Sam reminded them all, even his own mental voice sounded a bit worried of what might happen next. And then, with the only warning in the form of a loud howl, Jacob took off through the woods.

And the only thing the pack could do was follow behind him, and hope that he would not give away the pack before the Cullens found the vampire.
