Chapter Thirteen

It wasn't a secret to anyone that Link wandered about the castle late at night to stretch his legs and hopefully find Zelda walking around. Why she would be awake so late, he wouldn't know; Link just wanted to see her and check if she was fine. Rusl assured him she was, but he would only believe in it when he saw her with his own eyes.
For one thing he was glad. After spending ten days investigating every room and every corner of Hyrule Castle, Link believed he finally found what he was looking for. He slowly ascended sets of stairs, crossed hallways in the dark, straining his ears for any suspicious sounds of approaching guards, until he finally reached a set of double doors. Link flexed his fingers, curled them around the door knob and twisted it, pushing the doors open, and closed his eyes in relief when they didn't crack loudly.
The room was dimly lit by the flames in the fireplace on the left wall. A writing table was nearby, chair drawn back, papers scattered on the smooth surface and a flower arrangement placed in the corner. There was also a, perhaps, king sized bed, carmine colored sheets pulled back and waiting for the occupant to lie down and surrender to sleep. Before the doors leading to the balcony, Link spotted a cushioned armchair and Zelda seated on it, a closed book in her hands as she gazed out the glass doors at the sky.
Link stepped inside and closed the door, locking it afterwards. He smirked when Zelda jumped up from her seat and whirled around, hands closed into fists and placed before her chest. He pulled his hood down and grinned at her, and she slowly lowered her hands, a small smile tugging the corner of her lips.
Her delicate hands gripped her open satin robe and closed it; Zelda rested one arm on her stomach as she raised her other hand to brush away a strand of hair, putting it behind her long ears. "Hello, Link."
He stood still for a brief moment, and the next thing she knew he had his arms tightly wrapped around her, nose buried in her hair and lips placing kisses on the top of her head. "Let me explain everything, please." Link didn't give her time to answer for he was already guiding her to the chair and she sat down without questioning him. Link paced a little before her, which earned him a small smile and a quiet laugh from her.
"Start from the beginning."
"Yeah," he breathed out and crouched down low before sitting on the floor, "I've always been watching you, since the beginning of my training. I've grown attached to you since then, to the point in which I left Ordon for weeks straight only to watch you, especially after I took away your father's and your fiancé's life."
"I followed you to Dragon Roost and after that I traveled to the Twilight Realm, seeking for Midna's help." He stole a glance at her and felt glad that Zelda didn't seem to be bothered by it. "We traded favors. She's a sorceress; she helped me by messing with the councilmen's heads, by playing tricks on them so they would believe they were too old to keep going. That was one of the reasons why they left so 'willingly'. I talked to the people and persuaded them, motivated them to rise against the council and the council only." Link took in a deep breath and arched his spine to release the tension on his back, "She later invited me to attend to the party. I never expected it to happen that way, I had everything planned. I am sorry, Zelda."
Their eyes met and their gazes locked. The princess leaned forward and reached for his hands, squeezing them before letting they fall back on his lap. "Midna and Nabooru were here when we arrived. They told me it was a misunderstanding, but Midna said you should be the one who would explain everything."
Link looked at his hands and rubbed them together, "What happened after our fight?"
"I knocked you out," she replied nonchalantly, leaning back on her seat, "I took your sword, your weapons and met the Duke in his chambers. We fought. He punched me and slammed me into the wall a few times, and also tried to suffocate me, but your hidden blades saved my life." Zelda laced her fingers together after touching her forehead, "I burned the mask, used some of my magic to take you to Epona and put you on her back with me, and she carried us back to Hyrule."
He remained silent, head lowered and eyes focused on his fingers as they picked at the hem of his pants. "I don't know why you're so quiet, Link." Zelda said after a while, rubbing her temples, "Do you feel bad about it?"
"A little," he replied in a murmur, not raising his head to look at her. Link heard her sigh and he pursed his lips before speaking again, "I made you a promise, after all."
"Don't get me wrong, Link, I didn't ask you to protect me all the time." The assassin shut his eyes tight and flinched, which didn't go unnoticed by her. "Though I appreciate it and I'd love to have you around me all the time, Midna told me you lost your cool back in Twilight Kingdom. You can't expect so much of yourself. Even assassins fail sometimes and it's completely normal, it's completely acceptable."
Zelda stood up, her long nightgown shifting as she approached him. Her bare fingers caressed his hair and gave it a light tug, one which Link interpreted as a silent command for him to stand up. Their gazes locked and she smiled as her hands trailed up his torso, coming to rest on his shoulders. "So which version of me do you prefer?" She quietly laughed at his playful tone and teasing smirk, letting him drop the dreaded subject they were discussing.
"Definitely not the sickly worried version." Zelda closed her eyes when his hands brushed on her waist; goddesses, she missed his tender touch. "I like this version of you," Link blinked and felt her hands leave his shoulders, reaching past them to grab the dark grey hood and pull it over his head, "and this one too."
Link's smirk widened and he dipped his head, claiming her lips to him. Her grip on the fabric of the cloak tightened, but she released it and slipped her hands under the hood, grabbing fistfuls of his hair. Link groaned and pulled her body flush against his, one hand pressing the small of her back while the other held her head in place. She gently bit his lips, he groaned in response, fingers pressing tightly on her skin. Link's hands slipped to the front of her robe, easily untying the knot before his hands slipped under it. Zelda shivered, the action causing her to pull away and Link opened his eyes halfway. Her eyes were closed and her lips were parte; he licks his own before seeking out for hers again.
His hands trailed up her body, reaching her shoulders where his fingers gently slid the robe off, revealing her skin to his eyes. Just as her robe touched the floor, the back of her legs touched the bed and Zelda lost her footing, falling backwards into the numerous pillows and soft comforters. Link remained on the spot, watching as she moved away to sit on the center of the mattress, watching as she licked her lips, watching as her eyes swept across the room before looking into his own. He slowly leaned forward, his hands supporting his weight as he slowly crawled towards her, never breaking eye contact.
"Link," her hands shot up and pressed on his chest before he could come any closer. He watched her, feeling confused while he blinked his eyes open. "I don't want to make you feel uncomfortable."
The assassin chuckled and brought his hand up to stroke her cheek. "I'm hardly feeling uncomfortable." Zelda kept silent as she bit her lips, her fingers loosely curled around the fabric of his shirt. Link watched as she chewed on her bottom lip and glanced out the windows, fidgeting once in a while. Oh. Oh. He wanted to slap himself in the face and kick his own groin for being so careless. "I- I'm sorry, Zelda," Link pulled back and thrust both his hands in his pockets.
She shook her head while she lightly scratched her upper arm, still not making eye contact. "It isn't what bothers me."
He blinked, his shoulders dropping as Link allowed his muscles to relax. "What is it then?"
"Did you need to use your body to complete missions before?" Her gaze finally found his and for once she hid her emotions from him. Link felt perturbed by that, for since their first meeting she had let him see her feelings in her eyes, be them rage or sadness or contentment. He straightened his spine and leaned back slightly, and furrowed his brows, feeling at a loss of words.
Finally, he decided to give a curt nod and her response was immediate. She breathed out heavily, turned her face away before her lips and eyes closed. "You're too young for that."
"I'm twenty."
"You're twenty now." She hissed lowly, snapping her head back in his direction while a frown marred her features. "How old were you when it first happened?"
Link opened his mouth to speak, but almost instantly closed it and gulped, narrowing his eyes and looking away. Why did it matter? "Seventeen," he grumbled, fists tightening inside the pockets of his pants.
"You're not doing it to make me feel better or to get something from me, are you?" The answer was painfully obvious, but she needed him to confirm it for her. He quickly turned his head and faced her again, his hands shot up to grab her upper arms; the grip was a bit too strong for her liking, but Zelda was too amused by the raw emotion in his eyes to even notice.
"Are you insane?!" Link hissed, pulling her close to him, his nose almost touching hers as he glared into her eyes. "Of course not!"
Zelda kept her smirk hidden, an impassive mask settling on her face. "Will you prove it to me later?"
He felt like shaking her, so maybe some sense would enter her head. "Of course I will!" She let her mask fall then, and kissed him before he could see the smile on her lips.
Trailing his hands up her arms, the assassin gently cradled her face and tilted her head to deepen the kiss, still keeping it slow. Zelda loosened the tie of his cloak and tugged on the collar of his shirt, her delicate fingers tracing patterns on his covered chest. He pulled away with a groan and discarded both articles of clothing in one swift motion. She placed her hands on his torso and stroked his skin lightly, looking up at him through her dark lashes and biting the inside of her lips softly. Link combed his fingers through her loose hair then gently held her chin in his fingers and pulled her face towards his, giving her a soft kiss on the lips.
The touch of his hands on her thighs made fire erupt in her core, the sensation so pleasing she released his lips with a sigh. He smirked, slipping his hands higher and dragging her nightgown with them. Zelda raised her arms, allowing him to take it off and throw it aside along with the cloak and his linen shirt. His hands were back on her thighs and he leaned forward, capturing her lips once more; Link refrained from looking too much at her, for maybe it would make her feel nervous or uneasy and they really didn't need that at the moment.
Link pulled away when his fingers traced the skin near her bellybutton, the oddly marred skin drawing his attention. He frowned when he realized what it was and looked up at Zelda, who shrugged and smiled sheepishly. "Battle scars." Scowling, he touched the scar again, the very proof that his hidden blade pierced her stomach in their first and only armed confrontation. "Hey," Link watched as she reached out and touched his stomach, feeling her fingers trace over the scar that remained after she thrust the sword in his abdomen, "we have matching scars."
He gave her a small smile and held her gaze, even when her fingertips trailed down his stomach, lightly brushing past the bulge in his pants and his thigh before finally settling on his knee. With a groan, Link kissed her again, keeping his hands on her waist while Zelda tugged on the waistband of his pants. He didn't assist her when she unbuttoned and unzipped his pants, but he did discard the rest of his clothing before pinning her down on the mattress. Kissing her neck, Link traced her curves and slipped her undergarments down her legs, making sure to tease by rubbing his thumb on her most private area over the fabric of her panties. He pulled away and dangled black panties before her face to tease her, causing her to laugh quietly and swat them away from his grip.
Nodding curtly, Zelda pulled his face to hers and kissed him, biting his lips softly while he slowly spread her legs apart. Link braced his weight on his forearms, positioning himself and slowly slipping inside her. She released his lips with a gasp, her nails painfully digging in his shoulder and leaving marks on his naked skin, but Link brushed the unpleasant feeling aside and planted kisses all over her face in an attempt to distract her. Her grip slackened and Zelda smiled a little, and then moved her head to give him a soft peck on his lips.
Link took it as his cue and he started moving, slowly, and groaned when she tugged on his hair and ran her hand across his back. He licked her lips, his tongue met with hers and Zelda moaned softly, scratching her nails on his back lightly. Link allowed his hand to touch her skin, her waist, her breasts, her thighs. Quickening his pace, his lips found her neck and he was careful enough to not leave any marks. Zelda whispered, gasped, knotted her hands in his hair and Link was loving every reaction he caused on her.
Returning his mouth to hers, he cupped her face and ran his thumb on her cheek, savoring her for as long as he could. She pulled away later, gasping out his name and hooking her legs around his waist, her back arched off the mattress as she grabbed the bed sheets. Link smirked and dipped his head, kissing and nibbling softly on her collarbones before directing his mouth to her chest. Zelda jolted and held her breath, closing her eyes tight before trying to control her breathing to no avail.
At long last, her body shook under him; her mouth parted in a silent scream and Zelda covered it with a hand. Above her, Link released her breast and stilled his body, groaning and resting his forehead on the base of her neck. He pulled out and sat back, panting as he watched the princess rub a hand on her face, as if she was wiping away saliva. "Well, that was..." she started, freezing in place when Link placed his lips on her thighs and hummed in acknowledgement, "... Embarrassing..."
Chuckling, he gave her knee a kiss and placed his hand on her shin. "How come?"
"I know you were watching me intently the whole time," she grumbled from beneath her palms and decided to sit up to look at him, "I got nervous."
"You were relaxed enough that it didn't even hurt," Link said patting her knee softly. Zelda smiled, running a hand through her hair and looking sideways, a blush on her cheeks. "That wasn't very princess-y like, you know," he commented, "princesses shouldn't do that before their marriage."
Smirking, Zelda propped herself on her knees and grabbed his jaw gently, "Well, Link, I'm not a regular princess."
He met her lips in a soft and brief kiss, "You're right. You fight and you date an outlaw."
"The perks of living in Hyrule," she said with a quiet laugh while moving towards the edge of the bed, "Are you going to return to the infirmary?"
Link watched as she slipped inside her nightgown and tied the robe securely around her waist before she caught him looking and threw his shirt in his direction. Chuckling, he caught it and put it on, "I wish I could stay, but someone might check on me."
Humming, Zelda approached him after he was fully dressed and lazily wrapped her arms around him, "I'll see you later, then."
He stroked her cheek and pecked her lips once more, smiling and bidding goodnight before walking out the door. Looking around briefly, Zelda sighed, both in contentment and sadness, and returned to her seat by the window, picking the book up from the floor and keeping it on her lap while she gazed at the stars.
Part of her fantasies were fulfilled, but the part she desired the most didn't come true.
