Dollface looked silently at Crutchie, expecting him to say more. But he had finished his side of the story. He stood up from the ground and turned to look out over the city, a cool breeze sending shivers down his spine. Dollface sat there, trying to absorb all that he had told her over the past hour. She felt such pain for him, knowing what he had to go through in the refuge. It became worse when she realized all of this had sat on his shoulders alone for the past few months.
"Crutchie, I'm sorry all that happened," she said quietly. "I'm even more sorry you kept all that to yourself. That's all so much to keep in your head. I don't know how you didn't go nuts."
"I feel like I did," Crutchie said. "There's some things I ain't eva gonna be able to not think about. I'm always gonna rememba Snyda and all the pain he put me through. I'm always gonna rememba what Rova looked like that last day in the refuge. I'm always gonna rememba what all those little kids looked like and how afraid they was all the time."
"Then let me help you forget," Dollface said, standing up. "I can help you to move on from all this."
"I don't think I'm eva gonna be able to move on," Crutchie said, shaking his head. "You know how I neva go swimming with you's guys. And how I don't like changin' in the room." Crutchie leaned his crutch up against the wall and slowly pulled his shirt over his head. He turned around to face Dollface. She gasped when she saw his bare chest for the first time months.
"This is why," he said, looking down. There were scars from where he had been burned with the fork. His bruises had never completely healed. He turned away from her again, and Dollface could see the gash where their father had cut him in his back. "This is why I ain't eva gonna move on. How can I when wheneva I change my shirt, I'm reminded of what happened." He put his shirt back on and leaned up against the wall.
"You just gotta think of all the good things in ya life," Dollface said, walking over to him. "You gotta think of all the things that make you smile."
"I don't think there was a single time in the refuge that I smiled," Crutchie said.
"Well think back," Dollface said, trying to comfort him. "From what you told me Rova and Rat seem like great guys. And the resta the kids you met. And what about Bird? All these people was in the same situation as you and they was still good friends to ya."
"They were good fellas," Crutchie said, the corner of his mouth turning up slightly. "Wish I knew what they was up to now that the refuge is closed."
"And you are sucha good person for neva ratting out on any of us," Dollface said. "Snyda put you through hell and you neva once finked on us."
"I would neva fink on you," Crutchie said. "If I did that, then what kinda person would I be?"
"And just rememba that afta all that happened," Dollface continued, "afta all that, you coulda come outta there a different person. You could be such a bitter, angry person right now. But you ain't. You chose to return to your normal, happy life, even though parts of the past is killin' you inside. But that's the thing, Crutchie. You can't undo the past so just move on and stay on track." They stood next to each other in another few minutes of silence before Crutchie moved and kissed the top of Dollface's head.
"I don't know what I'd do without you," he said.
"You'd be useless without me, that's what'd happen," Dollface said jokingly. "I'd be useless without you too."
"Come on," Crutchie said, grabbing her hand and pulling her away. "Let's go to bed." The two siblings left the night sky behind them and closed the door to the roof. As they walked back into the silent bunk room, they looked around at their sleeping friends, suddenly more appreciative of having them in their lives. Crutchie crawled into his bed and closed his eyes. As he drifted off the sleep, he had a feeling that his nightmares of the refuge would be no more.
