A/N: I'm really sorry for such a long waiting for this chapter, which I'm afraid is not really going to be made up with this chapter... I definitely hope it will be, though, at least partially. It's jus that with the university application, a very terrible writer's block and a very busy period at work, not to mention freezing and almost turning into snowman today, it really wasn't that easy to write this chapter. Still, I'm very sorry and I'll try to publish the next one faster. Thanks to those who left reviews for the last chapter. Now, enjoy everyone.
Sue stretched carefully, waking up and snuggling closer to the source of warmth right next to her. Inhaling, she immediately recognised the very familiar scent of her husband, and it only made her move even closer. He was still asleep, of that she had no doubts, but he still subconsciously placed his arm around her shoulder, pressing her against himself. It felt so good to lay with him like that again, now that she was completely healed. Her recovery was slow, painful and most of all, infuriating when she started to feel like she was well enough not to need help from anyone, but Jack did everything in his power not to let her push the boundaries. She knew it was all for her own good, but at that moment, she had still felt annoyed.
Even though she was enjoying the moment very much, after placing a tender kiss on his bare chest, she moved away just a little bit to be able to look at him. She smiled, seeing his calmly looking face and raised her hand to place it on his cheek and caress it with her thumb, the morning stubble giving her the rough feeling under her fingertip. She could see his lips move just a little bit, when he mumbled something but she had no way of knowing what it was and leaned down, placing another kiss on his forehead. It was difficult for her to believe, that she could feel any happier than she had earlier, but the truth was that being with him and their daughter, combined with the fact that they were now safe and could live a peaceful life made her feel better than ever.
"Sue…" he mumbled again, but this time she was able to read her own name on his lips.
Her own kept travelling all over his face, pressing tender kisses wherever they met his skin. Even though he enjoyed it very much, and a part of his mind was telling him to wake up so he could take even more pleasure in it, the other part was screaming that it was way too early to do that. Yet, the first one won and he tightened his grip around his wife, only to carefully roll them over, so he was lying on top of her and look at her face, graced with a small smile. He couldn't help himself and leaned down to place a lingering kiss on her forehead and then another on the tip of her nose, making her chuckle.
"Good morning." she said, when she noticed him move away, but she quickly realised it wasn't his intention at all.
He did, in fact, withdraw his face a little bit, enough to gaze straight into her eyes and closed the distance between their faces.
"Very good, indeed." he mumbled in the last possible moment for her to read him, before kissing her.
She smiled against them, her arms slowly coming around his neck, her fingers playing with locks of his hair on his nape, holding him close while his lips were giving hers gentle pecks. She didn't hesitate to reciprocate the gesture after he paused and looked into her eyes, and what started as a gentle, tender kiss, soon started evolving into something much more intense. She could feel a shiver run through her body, when his fingers moved down her side in a teasing manner, her grip on him tightening before her own hands started their journey as well. She moaned softly, parting her lips slightly, granting his tongue the permission to enter, which he asked for with a gentle probing. She arched into his touch, when his hand smoothly slid under the top of her pyjamas, his fingertips moving along her bare skin, making her want more contact while he was giving her so little of it.
"Jack…" she groaned, when his lips released hers, moving to her jaw line and down to her neck, placing kisses all over their way, while his hands kept on torturing her with the teasing way they were moving. She moaned once again, when his lips reached just the right point on her neck to send a pleasant jolt through her body, the grip of her hands tightening a little on his shoulders.
And then suddenly, she felt him stiffen and reluctantly move away with a groan.
"Emy." he told her, when she sent him a questioning look and lazily slid out from under the covers to walk towards the door to the bedroom.
Watching him carefully, the moment he unlocked and opened the door, she saw the little girl stand in front of him, holding her teddy bear against her. There could have been over a year and she grew out of some things she used to do, but morning cuddle wasn't one of them. It was just a matter of moment before she found herself lying between her parents, fighting the consciousness, dozing. Sue studied Jack's features carefully, the way he was watching their daughter; she could see there was something different than the girl occupying his mind, even if probably connected to her in a way. He jumped a little, when she reached out her hand and touched his shoulder, bringing him back to reality and making him move his eyes to her. She didn't need to voice it for him to know the question hanging in the air and he sighed.
"I don't want to go back to working in the FBI…" he said, his eyes fixed on the child between them, his hand gently stroking her hair.
"I thought you liked it…" she said and noticed a slight wince come to his face. "Don't get me wrong, it's your decision and if that's what you want, you should do that…"
"The only thing I really know I want is to be with the two of you… You're right, I liked working in the FBI, but that was before it turned the past almost five years of my life into one huge mess… It robbed me out of experiencing so many precious moments in our daughter's life, of the excitement accompanying awaiting for her and practically all of her firsts… It almost cost me our relationship and then I almost lost first Emily, and then you… And even though they offered me to work in our task force again, it's not as appealing as I thought it would be… I don't know if I want that, I don't want to risk yours or my life and the risk will be there… I want to be there for you and Emy, I want to grow old with you, watch her grow up and I don't feel like I want to take any smallest chance that I may not be given such an opportunity…"
Sue reached our her hand, touched it gently and started caressing it. He sent her a small smile in response to the comforting gesture.
"On the other hand, I don't really know what I could do instead… I mean, I could work as a lawyer, but it's been such a long time since I did anything related to it, I'd have to get up to date with all the changes… Yes, I was helping with the legal issues in the company, but it's not the same… And the court room doesn't look that appealing either… I could work in a security or something, but…" he just sighed heavily, leaving the sentence unfinished.
"Doesn't your family's company have any department in DC? You could continue to do what you were doing here, only there…"
"In theory they have, but it's a very small one and they don't need a person like this... I could officially take it here, but that would mean staying in Wisconsin and I'm not sure I want that, especially that you want to come back to DC… I just don't know what I should do, and your 'I'm going to support you no matter what you choose' is not really helping…"
"The truth is, that I'm not sure I know what I want, either… Yes, I miss DC and our friends, but it's not going to be like it used to be, anymore… With Tara in Chicago, Lucy considering following her fiancé to England and Bobby working in Milwaukee of all the places in the country, it's not going to have the same charm…"
"Yeah… It's a shame that we discovered Crash transferred here such a short time ago in comparison to how long he's so relatively close… But I would have never suspected Darcy would accept such a job offer, and he'd follow her…"
"I know you're still not happy he's with her, but the fact that they're still together is the best evidence that they love each other… And they have learnt their lesson the first time…"
Jack nodded his head, it was just one of a huge amount of evidence that his best friend really cared about Darcy, and yet no matter how much he tried, he couldn't stop thinking how she broke his heart leaving for California. He knew she saw it as a mistake and regretted it very much, and still he was worried that it might happen again. Not that he was going to tell it to Bobby, the only thing he could do was support his decision, the more that he seemed happy.
In fact, they both did and during their surprising visit few days after Sue was released from the hospital, and on many that followed, it was pretty obvious they didn't consider any other option than a future together. Even though the happiness to see each other again after such a long time was on the first plan, there was also surprise – caused in the biggest part by Darcy's visibly pregnant belly – and curiosity about all the changes in each other's lives. So, it was nothing surprising that the latter was the main topic of their talk. Thanks to this, Jack and Sue learnt about the fact that they were in Milwaukee for about eight months, but simply had no idea that the Hudsons were so close, otherwise they would have visited much sooner. They learnt about the changes in their other friends' lives, like about the fact that their team pretty much fell apart, after so many of its members left it. Tara got a good offer from the office in Chicago, which she decided to accept and Lucy was moved to another team but now was thinking very seriously about moving with her fiancé, who she believed was really the one for her. And after having a serious accident at work, which Bobby didn't know a lot about because Myles didn't want to talk about it, he wasn't able to work in FBI the way he used to any longer, Leland decided to open his own flower shop and was much more happy with it than anyone would have expected.
The biggest surprise, however, Jack had when Manning asked him for an advice. He didn't believe he was actually the best person to go to for a relationship one, but was willing to help as much as he was able. And yet, Hudson definitely didn't expect the question Bobby actually asked him.
"How can I know she actually wants to marry me?"
Bobby Manning, known for his avoidance of any serious commitment, who used to tease him so much upon hearing that Sparky was thinking about proposing to Sue and then did that, was now very seriously considering asking Darcy to marry him. Jack stared at him in shock for a moment, but the truth was that he always believed his friend would change his mind upon realising it was the right woman and it turned out he was right. He didn't give him a straight answer then, because there was no way he could be completely sure, but he did suggest a few things, which made him feel more confident about popping the question to Sue, because they made him believe she was going to say yes. And he actually watched Darcy over the time they spent together, and what he saw was that she was as committed to this relationship as his friend, and not only because of their baby.
"Still, I'm not sure living so close to your parents is a good thing… It has it's advantages for sure, but sometimes I wish we weren't so close… I know you mentioned that they could be really overzealous and now I know you weren't exaggerating… Not to mention that you have no privacy here… You do something and it's not even two hours before the whole town knows about it! It can be so infuriating..!"
"I'm hungry…" they both turned their eyes back to the girl, who they didn't even notice was now completely awake, but very content to stay the way she was. Yet, her announcement was followed by a quiet, growling sound coming from her stomach and Jack smiled.
"What would you want to eat, Sweetie?"
"Pancakes." she said, and this time both of her parents laughed. They had no doubts it was going to be her answer.
"Well, since the two of you were good, I can agree to make some." said Sue, lazily getting out of the bed and smiled at the sight of two matching grins she got from her husband and daughter.
She was happy to let the matter of decisions rest for now, because she really wasn't in any hurry to make them. They really had a lot to consider and they weren't getting anywhere close to choosing what they wanted, but they were going to have to, soon. The problem was, what was going to give them what they truly wanted?
And, what is your opinion? Both places have advantages and disadvantages, but what would be the best for them? I'd really like to read your ideas/opinions! :)
