The next morning when Sherlock came to the great hall for breakfast, the Hufflepuffs were in a panic while McGonagall tried to calm them down but to no avail. The Doctor was at his side, straightening his bow tie as he saw the panicked students swarming the teacher. Sherlock turned to see Molly running towards him with a fearful look in her amber eyes. She stopped right next to the two Ravenclaw students.
"Sherlock," she panted as she met the detective's gaze "Lestrade's missing. He was in the Common Room last night and no one can find him. We asked the ghosts and paintings, no one saw him."
The Detective froze, eyes widening in horror as he said "Lestrade? You have to be kidding."
Amy ran up next to the Hufflepuff with a shake of the head. "No, Molly's not lying. Sherlock it's started, kids are going missing."
The Scottish girl seemed scared but she barely showed it. Sherlock blinked his eyes before saying "Okay, we just need to calm down. Molly, go find out what you can from your house."
Molly nodded and swept away back towards her house. The Doctor watched her as she left, after a few moments he turned back to Amy and said "What do we do now? I doubt anyone saw anything suspicious."
"Agreed," Amy sighed, eyes flicking to the teachers as they tried to soothe the panicking students "maybe we should have Molly find out anything she can but how do we know what house they're going after next?"
"We don't." Sherlock said suddenly, eyes flashing towards the form of Professor Morgan leaning against the stone of the Great Hall. With narrowed eyes he turned away from his friends. "I'll be back, just carry on like nothing happened."
Amy watched as Sherlock walked away towards the Professor who laughed when he saw the student approach. Amy turned back towards the Doctor before growling "I have an idea to find out what's going on."
The Doctor watched as his ginger friend walked away back to her table where John was sitting, snacking on a piece of toast talking to Rory. Amy walked up and pulled the two of them up. Rory nearly dropped his toast while John pried Amy's hand from his cloak hood.
"What are you doing?" John said as he turned towards his ginger friend.
Amy smiled as she began to drag them away from the Gryffindor table, luckily it was a Saturday and they had no classes. "You're coming with me. Lestrade's missing, Hufflepuff is in shambles, and we're going to do something about it."
Rory groaned as he took another bite of his toast before turning back to Amy "What can we really do? There's no leads anywhere and the teachers won't believe a word we said."
The Scottish girl shrugged as she led them along, casting one last look at Sherlock as Professor Morgan lead him away down a hallway. "It doesn't matter, but if we can prove something's happening to the students, we could be heroes! Imagine us, first years from all houses, saving the school. It's be talked about for years, Harry Potter and his family wouldn't believe it!"
"They've already done it." John groaned, twisting his arm to Amy would let go of his sleeve. "The teachers have already looked over the entire school from what I'm hearing. Amy, besides how could they possibly get in undetected?"
"You're forgetting one thing though." Amy said as she pushed open the doors and walked towards the staircase that lead towards the Library. "Anyone who can enter let alone see this place has magic. And that could easily conceal anyone."
"Good point." Rory said with a sigh, turning away sheepishly as he blushed. Amy smirked as they ran up the stairs, she easily skipped steps while Rory and John followed close behind, losing breath a lot faster than they would care to admit. They went up flights of staircases before she turned back to them but before she could say anything Rory panted "What would we even look for? There are thousands of things in that library but what is the one we're looking for?"
"No idea." Amy replied with a smirk as she tore through the open door of the Library. "But we just need to find something about concealing or drugging or something. Anything really...something powerful."
John shook his head and walked into the Library after her, instantly Amy went towards the direction of the charms while John took the more defined path of older potions, outlawed from being taught in regular classes for their ages. John grabbed and old and leatherbound book before opening it, he flipped through the pages, potions form Polyjuice to Sleeping to even torture. But one caught his eyes.
"John," Rory said as he glanced over his friend's shoulder "what are you looking at?"
The Gryffindor blinked, eyes scanning the page intently as he gazed at the picture of a large snake, curled up with jaws open, ready to tear into anything around him. He knew that snake, every second year talked about it, the Basilisk, the huge snake that Harry Potter had killed many years before. The page had old writing written from a quill and ink jar.
"What does it say?" Rory asked, bright eyes glancing at Amy as she walked over to him.
"The Basilisk Effect." John said slowly as he read from the book. "Widely outlawed among use, this potion has the ability to appear in two different states, liquid and gas. Though not as lethal as a glance from a Basilisk but the effects can petrify the victim for up to sixty hours. Many places have this outlawed even though there are no Basilisk fangs, let alone poison, left."
"Except in the chamber below the school but we need to know how to speak parseltongue." Amy said with a sigh. "And no one here knows how."
John rolled his eyes and turned away, shutting the book and placing it quickly back on the shelf. "We know about this stuff and honestly, no one knows how to even speak Parseltongue. Even if its the closest thing to finding out."
"We should wait until we get more of a hint." Rory said. "We have to trust the teachers...and Sherlock. Am I right?"
Amy nodded "I guess you're right. But we just have to hope the next people taken isn't one of our 'inside' officers. Everything would come crashing down then."
"Agreed." John said flatly. "We should get back to the common room before people start taking notice of our absence."
The other two first years nodded and walked off with John. None of them noticed the wizard behind the bookshelf walk away, umbrella in his grasp as he spun it in his hands. Mycroft smirked, his mind was spinning with the new information. These first years were a lit smarter than he thought they'd be.
