Chapter 2
Rae stared about the room in dismay. All her life she had known the story of the Goblin King. She and her sister were practically raised on the movie. Every month they would watch it anew, staring transfixed at the television wishing with every fiber of their being that the Goblin King was real and that they would be taken to his kingdom.
How stupid she was for ever wishing such a thing.
Goblins of all shapes and sizes surrounded her. Poking her, pinching her, grabbing her hair and making inappropriate comments that nearly caused her to turn violent. God, she hated them. They were like untamed children, prancing around with no rules or sense of morality. Just simple minded creatures intent on destruction.
"Don't think too badly of them, my dear."
Rae froze, but didn't turn around. She knew if she would surely swoon at the sight of him. "I didn't know you read minds." She said as casually as possible, trying to blank all her thoughts.
"I can read facial expressions and yours is an open book."
"Hence the reading part." Slowly, Rae turned around, plastering a lazy smile on her face. "So, have you finished flirting with my sister?"
"Jealous?" He raised an eyebrow, walking around her carefully. The goblins immediately cleared pathways for him, none wanting to be at the receiving end of his cane.
Don't look at his junk. Don't look at his junk. Don't look at his junk. Rae chanted over and over in her head. Why did he wear such tight leggings? What possible functionality could they possibly serve? "Of the affections of a crazed ruler of ugly little children?" Rae scoffed. "Hardly."
"Don't taunt me." The casual demeanor he had flaunted only moments before vanished instantly. "I can throw you in the oublient."
"Go ahead! I know how to get out." Rae crossed her arms over her chest.
"The Bog of Eternal Stench?" He smirked.
"I'll just have to follow you around."
"I could turn you into a goblin."
"Do you really think I wouldn't give you an eternity of hell for that?"
"You are already turning into a goblin. If your sister doesn't reach me in time."
"Oh damn." Rae glared at him. "Then I hope you own a pair of earplugs, because I will never shut up about this."
"So little faith in your sister? What a pity."
Rae swallowed. Why did that deep, British voice cause her insides to flaughter around? "Why don't you just ask her out?"
"I beg your pardon!" The Goblin King's eyes narrowed.
"Seriously, if you want to bone her so bad, ask her out, tell her she looks pretty and spend a lot of money on her! She'll be yours by the end of the night."
"She is so shallow?"
"As a puddle." Rae sighed. "Why did you even involve me in the first place?"
