The Vampires of Venice pt. 2
Guido and I sit in a slightly awkward silence as we wait for the others to return.
"Jaz, how old are you?" Guido finally asks as he turns to look at me.
"Seventeen, why?"
"So young, and yet you don't seem bothered by all of this. Why is that?" I take a second to ponder this question.
"I'm still trying to answer that question myself," I reply truthfully.
"You're sister; she seems to be rather adventurous," Guido comments. I give a short laugh at that.
"There is no one in the world quite like Amelia Pond."
"If I did not know she was your sister, then I never would have believed it to be true," Guido comments.
"What do you mean by that?" I question in confusion. Growing up, everyone always commented on how much alike we were.
"You seem more of the older sibling, like you have more life experience and wisdom than her," Guido says as he tries to explain.
"I tend to think of myself as the smarter of the two of us, but that doesn't answer why you thought we were not sisters."
"To me, it seems that the Doctor and you are more suitable as siblings is all," he answers.
"Well, the Doctor and I do have similar interests, but we don't look a lot alike."
"Possibly, but there seems to be something…" Guido is unable to finish his thought as the door bursts open. Guido's daughter emerges in to the sunlight.
"Quickly. Get out. Quick! Oh…" She turns back as the sun hits her. The Doctor, Rory, and Amy rush out from behind her. The Doctor turns back around.
"Come on, run!" He rushes back up the stairs as she is pulled back in.
"I can't!" she cries as the door is slammed shut. There is an electric pulse that comes through and shocks the Doctor.
"Oh!" Rory and Amy cry out as the Doctor groans and then falls down the steps. I rush up to the steps as Rory kneels next to the Doctor.
"Is he dead?" Amy questions fearfully as she grabs for my hand.
"No, he's breathing," Rory assures. I give Amy's hand a squeeze as we both turn to look at Guido. He looks at us with eyes full of sorrow before turning so we can't see him cry.
DWDWDWDWDWDW
Back at Guido's house, the Doctor checks over Amy's bite mark with his sonic.
"You're fine," he says looking at it before putting it away. "Open wide." He places a mint in her mouth. "I need to think." He starts pacing. "Come on brain, think, think. Think! Think!" He takes a seat at the table with the rest of us.
"If they're fish people, it explains why they hate the sun," Amy speaks up and the Doctor places his hand over her mouth.
"Stop talking, brain thinking. Hush."
"It's the school thing that I don't understand," Rory chimes in before the Doctor places his other hand over Rory's mouth.
"Stop talking, brain thinking. Hush."
"I say we take the fight to them," Guido says in anger.
"Ah, ah, ah!" the Doctor interrupts.
"What?" Guido questions.
"Ah!" The Doctor looks at Rory. Rory places his hand over Guido's mouth. I decide not to say anything. "Her planet dies, so they fell through a crack in space and time, and end up here, then she closes off the city and, one by one, starts changing the people into creatures like her to start a new gene pool. Got it. Then what? They come from the sea, they can't survive for ever on land, so what's she going to do? Unless she's going to do something to the environment to make the city habitable…She said, 'I shall bend the heavens to save my race.' Bend the heavens…" The Doctor removes his hands from their mouths and places them on their heads. "Bend…the heavens…She's going to sink Venice."
"She's going to sink Venice." I answer at the same time the Doctor does. Guido looks at me before speaking.
"She's…she's going to sink Venice?"
"And repopulate it with the girls she's transformed."
"You can't repopulate somewhere with just women. You need…blokes." Rory comments.
"She's got blokes," Amy chimes in.
"Where?" I ask.
"In the canal. She said to me, 'There are 10,000 husbands waiting in the water.'"
"Only the male offspring survived the journey here. She's got 10,000 children swimming around the canals, waiting for Mum to make them some compatible girlfriends. Eugh!" We all cringe at that thought. "I mean, I've been around a bit, but, really, that's…Eugh!" There is a loud thud from above and we all look up at the ceiling. "The people upstairs are very noisy." There is more banging and clattering.
"There aren't any people upstairs," Guido replies.
"I knew you were going to say that. Did anyone else know he was going to say that?"
"Is it the vampires?" Rory questions as we continue to look up.
"Like I said, they're not vampires." The Doctor whips out his UV light. "Fish from space." The door bursts open as one of the windows is broken. We look out one of the other windows to see the girls looking in on us.
"Aren't we on the second floor?" I comment as we stare in shock. They break the window and Amy and I cover ourselves from the flying glass. The Doctor takes the UV light and then his sonic. He points the sonic at the girls showing their true form.
"What's happened to them?" Guido questions.
"There's nothing left of them. They've been fully converted. Blimey, fish from space have never been so buxom." The Doctor moves away from the window and toward the door. "Move. Come on." Amy leads the way down the stairs with Rory right behind her. I follow and the Doctor comes next. Guido brings up the rear.
"Give me the lamp," Guido demands. The Doctor gives him the lamp as we continue down the stairs.
"Go, go, go, guys! Keep moving, go, go go!" The Doctor shoves us out the door. I turn back to see Guido waiting at the door. I run back.
"Stay away from the door, Jaz," Guido warns as he slams the door in my face.
"No! Guido! What are you doing?! I'm not leaving you," I cry out as I bang on the door.
"What are you doing?!" the Doctor demands as he come up next to me. He pulls out his sonic. "Bolted."
"Guido!" I call out again. The Doctor looks at me as a look of understanding crosses his face.
"Jaz, run!" he yells grabbing me by the arm. The building behinds us explodes and we are thrown to the ground. Amy and Rory make their way back to us as the Doctor helps me up. The sky fills with clouds and thunder is heard in the distance. We look at the remains of Guido's house.
"Rosanna's initiating the final phase," the Doctor comments sadly.
"We need to stop her. Come on!" Amy exclaims.
"No, no. Get back to the TARDIS," the Doctor replies. I look at the Doctor suspiciously.
"You can't stop her on your own."
"We don't discuss this! I tell you to do something, Amy, and you do it." Amy stands stunned for a moment. "Huh?" She glares at him and then stalks off.
"Thank you," Rory comments before following her. I turn to look at the Doctor.
"What was that all about?" I questions as I motion after Amy and Rory.
"It's something Rory and I talked about last night."
"What about?" I question but the Doctor shakes his head.
"I'll tell you later. Now get going," he says motioning with his head to follow them.
DWDWDWDWDWDW
I catch up to Amy and Rory by the water. We look up to see the storm above the city.
"Oh, my God! What is going on?" Amy questions in fear.
"The sky, it's like it's boiling," Rory comments.
DWDWDWDWDWDW
We make our way back through the city as the storm gets worse. Amy keeps a tight grip on my arm. We round a corner and come face to face with Rosanna's son. Rory grabs two candle sticks and holds them up like a cross.
"Amy, Jaz, run!" The man swats the sticks out of his hands. He makes a move toward me and Amy. "This way, you freak! No! This…this…this way, you big, stupid, great…SpongeBob!" Rory tries to get him to follow him instead. Amy pushes me backwards until we hit a wall. "The only thing I've seen uglier than you is…your mum!" This stops him.
"Huh?" He turns to Rory.
"No…" Rory puts his hands up.
"Did you just say something about Mummy?" Rory grabs a broom.
"Ha! Ha!" He starts swinging it around like a sword. Mummy's boy pulls out a real sword. "Argh!" They start fighting each other.
"Careful!" Amy cries as we both watch.
"Hit him!" I yell and Rory uses the bristle end of the broom. Amy grabs my arm and pulls me with her.
"This way, bring him this way! Rory!" Amy pulls me up some stairs and then pulls out her compact. We turn to see Rory backtracking toward us. He trips and falls.
"Ow!" Mummy's boy turns in to his true form and jumps on top of Rory.
"Hey! Mummy's boy." Amy holds out the mirror and it catches the sunlight. She aims it at the monster and it turns to dust.
"Oh, oh…" Rory says as he sits up and smells the ashes.
"That was lucky," I say as Amy closes her compact.
"Why did you make the sign of a cross, you numpty?" she questions him as Rory stands up and brushes off the ashes.
"Oh, oh, right! I'm being reviewed now, am I?" he questions in annoyance as Amy rushes down to meet him. She full on makes out with him and I turn my head.
"Hmm! Now we go help the Doctor." Amy leaves Rory a little dazed as she heads off toward the center of town.
"Rightio," Rory comments. I pat him on the shoulder as we take off after Amy.
DWDWDWDWDWDW
The rain is pouring down as we dash between fleeing Venetians. Once inside the building we run in to the Doctor.
"Get out! I need to stabilize the storm." The Doctor runs toward the throne.
"We're not leaving you," Rory states.
"Right," the Doctor says coming back to join us, "so one minute it's all, 'You make people a danger to themselves,' and the next it's, 'We're not leaving you!' But if one of you gets squashed or blown up or eaten, who gets…" The Doctor is cut off as the ground begins to shake. Bits of the ceiling rain down on us as we all tumble to the ground.
"What was that?" Rory questions when the shaking stops.
"Nothing. Bit of an earthquake."
"An earthquake?" Amy questions as she stands up. Rory offers me a hand and helps me to my feet.
"Manipulate the elements, it can trigger earthquakes, but don't worry about them."
"No?" Rory questions.
"No. Worry about the tidal waves caused by the earthquake. Right, Rosanna's throne is the control hub but she's locked the program, so tear out every single wire and circuit in the throne. Go crazy. Hit it with a stick, anything." We make our way to the throne. "We need it to shut down and re-route control to the secondary hub, which I'm guessing will also be the generator."
The Doctor runs off to find the generator. Amy, Rory, and I do all we can to rip the throne apart.
DWDWDWDWDWDW
We make our way outside in to the wind and the rain. We look up to the bell tower.
"There he is!" Rory points to the top of the tower. We huddle together as the rain continues to poor.
"Come on!" I exclaim.
"Come on!" Rory and Amy yell at the same time. Finally, the storm clears and the sun comes out. Amy and Rory start laughing as they hug. The other people start cheering as well.
"You did it!" Rory cries out.
DWDWDWDWDWDW
"Now, then? What about you two, eh?" the Doctor questions as we head back to the TARDIS. "Next stop Leadworth Registry Office? Maybe I can give you away."
"It's fine. Drop me back where you found me. I'll just say you've…" Rory starts but trails off.
"Stay," Amy says. With us. Please. Just for a bit. I want you to stay." Rory smiles as he looks to the Doctor.
"Fine with me."
"Yeah? Yes, I would like that," Rory admits excitedly.
"Nice one," Amy says before kissing him. "I will pop the kettle on. Hey, look at this. Got my spaceship, got my boys, got my sister. My work here is done." Amy pushes the TARDIS door open and walks inside.
"We are not her boys," Rory says.
"Yeah, you are," I saw with a small smile.
"Yeah, we are," the Doctor states.
"Yeah, we are," Rory admits. The Doctor follows Rory in to the door but stops abruptly. He turns to me.
"Jaz, listen to that," he directs.
"Er, what? All I can hear is…silence," I say when I don't hear anything. I push past the Doctor and in to the TARDIS.
DWDWDWDWDWDW
"Jaz!" The Doctor exclaims racing in to the library. I jump in my seat losing my balance and tumbling out of my chair.
"Doctor," I say as I get to my feet, "you scared me."
"Sorry about that," he says squinting at the book in my hand. "Are you reading Ovid?"
"I'm in to mythology. Amy loves her Romans, I love me some Greek and Roman gods." I shrug my shoulders before glaring at him. "Is there a reason to why you interrupted my quiet time?"
"Right, I figured it out," he says with a big grin.
"Figured what out?" I ask in confusion as I set the book down on the table.
"Why you remember things that no one else does."
"Well, what did you find?" I ask nervously placing my hands on my hips.
"You fell through a crack in the universe and ended up in Amy's time," he says like the answer was completely obvious. I stand in shock for a moment.
"I did what now?" I ask in exasperated confusion.
"You fell through a crack in the universe," he says slowly and deliberately. "It's not that hard to understand. Rosanna finally filled in the last piece of the puzzle. They came to Earth through a crack in the universe."
"Are you calling me an alien?" I ask defensively crossing my arms in defiance.
"No, no, no," the Doctor quickly says putting his hands up. "I'm saying you might have fallen through a crack in time."
"Might have fallen," I say mulling it over in my mind, "so you're not sure."
"Of course I'm not sure." He pulls the sonic out of his pocket and points it at me. "Now stand still I'm going to sonic you."
"Uh, okay," I say as I drop my arms to my sides.
"Done," he says.
"So what's the verdict," I ask but he puts his hand up.
"We need to go to the control room," he says before racing back out the door. I sprint after him. He takes the sonic and puts it in the console as information starts being displayed on the screen.
"Definitely human," he says turning to me with a smile. I sigh before he adds, "and definitely from the future."
"How can you tell?"
"Antibodies in your blood stream to fight off diseases that don't exist yet on Earth," the Doctor says while waving his hand.
"I fell through a crack in time," I say again trying to let the words sink in. "Guido was trying to tell me something back at the boat but he never got to finish his thought."
"Do you remember anything about the future?" the Doctor questions ignoring my last statement.
"Um, no, I was too young to remember," I say as I think back. "I was two years old. What is there to remember?"
"How do you know that?" his question surprises me. I wonder what brought that out, and then I remember a conversation I had with Aunt Sharon when I was twelve.
"All the pictures of me start at the age of two. Aunt Sharon told me all my baby pictures were lost when we moved from Scotland."
"If you were two, then Amy must have been…" he trails off as he counts in his head.
"Six," I answer for him. "She must know. She must know I'm not really her sister. Why wouldn't she tell me?" The Doctor looks at me with sympathy in his eyes. He puts his hand on my shoulder.
"That is something you will have to ask her yourself." He gives my shoulder a squeeze before walking off leaving me standing alone trying to process all of the things I have just learned.
