Chapter 5
Back at the precinct, a missing persons report and an amber alert having been issued for the missing newborn, Kate stared at the white board. The face, only about 9 years younger than hers, seemed to haunt her. She tried to ignore the painful feeling in her gut, that this shouldn't have ever happened, to anyone, but it was too thought provoking to ignore.
"Castle?" She asked, turning around but immediately discovering he was no longer beside her. She sighed, brushing back a piece of hair with her fingertips. This case bothered him, and Beckett could tell. Hell, it bothered her too. It just seemed too strange. That they'd hear the news about the pregnancy and then, well, this.
She stood up, feeling with a pull of her spirit where he would likely be. The break room. She was right of course, as she watched him bent over a cup of coffee, a hand on his forehead, lost in his own thoughts. Normally, he'd be out brainstorming crazy idea, but this case didn't really call for that. There would be no ideas that could make up for the fact that a young woman was dead, a husband was fatherless, and a baby was missing.
When she saw Castle, something pulled and prodded at her heart. Actually, to be honest, it was several things. Sorrow, concern, but more so: Love. So much love it was nearly unbearable. And that love was what carried her forward, into the room, placing her hand on his shoulder, "Hey Castle."
His demeanor changed instantly, as if trying to hide the part of him that was upset from her as he said, "Hey."
However, no matter how much he tried, she saw through it. She'd known him too long. "I know this is a hard one, Castle. If you want to call it a day and head on home, well, everyone would understand." She didn't like to see him like this.
"No." He shook his head, "She deserves justice. That baby needs to be with it's dad. And I need to see this one through."
She placed her hand on top of his, nodding. "I just can't help thinking though…" He started.
"About Alexis." She finished for him, stroking his hand with her thumb. I'm here Castle, she thought, I'm a part of the family now too.
He nodded, finally looking into her eyes. God, he loved her, and he couldn't wait to marry her. "I just can't help thinking, what if it was Alexis, lying on that island. What if it was my grandchild missing?"
Kate understood. She'd thought about it too, the situation hitting close to home. The mind was an irrational one, one that tried to make it seem like your worst fears could come true at any moment. "But it wasn't, Castle, and we'll make sure that it never is."
Castle could only nod, "I can only hope so."
