Chapter 29: Alone With You

A/N: so this is just a one shot lyric fic that I wrote one night when I was bored and I thought it would fit in perfectly here so this is 'ALONE WITH YOU' by Jake Owen BONES style. Hope you like it. R&R is appreciated.

Brennan is sitting all alone in her apartment, tears running down her face, as she remembers the events of the past few days without him.

I don't see you laugh,
You don't call me back,
But you kiss me when you're drunk

Her mind races with the thought of the countless times they have fallen together over the past few years. Drinking at the Founding Fathers, or in her office, or her apartment, or his, and waking up the next morning content with hating herself for letting it happen again and again.

I don't know your friends,
Don't know where you've been,
Why are you the one I want

Her brain switches images remembering his cautious look every time he told her he loved her and her reacting the way he knew she would, it always ending in disaster and heartache for the both of them.

Don't put your lips up to my mouth and tell me you can't stay,
Don't slip your hand under my shirt and tell me it's okay,
Don't say it doesn't matter, cause it's gonna matter to me.
I can't be alone with yooouu

"…I'm sorry Tempe. …I-I can't go back to that again. …it's all or nothing."

"Seeley that's not fair." She'd begged.

Brennan could feel the ache of her broken heart throb in her chest.

"Well this isn't fair on me Temperance! I have to have someone who will love me in 30 or 40 or 50 years. …you made your decision Tempe. Now I have to make mine." He said the pain evident in his eyes. "If you can't be with me then… I have to move on. I have to be happy."

Brennan flinched at the memory of his cruel words.

"you're not happy?" she felt the pain again as if it the word were new and her brain still couldn't fully process what had happened with them.

"I can't do this anymore Tempe. I'm miserable with this arrangement. Every time we get to this point you hide behind your ever so guarded walls and I'm stuck picking up the pieces while you fly away to some other country and bury yourself neck deep in dead bodies."

Brennan can feel the sharp pain in her heart intensify as she remembers ever, single one of his harsh words.

You've got me out on the edge every time you call,
And I know it would kill me if I fall,
I can't be alone with you,

"that's not true I—" she tried to defend her actions and looking back she knew, even then, he was right.

"Temperance I don't want to fight with you, and it kills me to say this but… I can't sit here waiting for the day you MIGHT be ready to admit that you love me... I have to move on. I'm sorry."

Please don't chain that door,
I can't win this war,
Your body's like a pill I shouldn't take,

Those words 'I have to move on. I'm sorry.' Ring out, loud and strong in her mind. Over. And over. And over.

'Why can't you love him, Brennan?' she thinks to herself. 'What is so wrong with accepting the possibility that you could actually truly love him?'

She sat for a long time thinking about that question. 'Why can't I love him?...'

Don't put your lips up to my mouth and tell me you can't stay,
Don't slip your hand under my shirt and tell me it's okay,
Don't say it doesn't matter, cause it's gonna matter to me,

Brennan shot to her feet wiping her eyes and grabbing her keys. She drove to his house in the pouring rain, way too fast. But she didn't care. She needed to see him. Before she changed her mind.

I can't be alone with you,
You've got me out on the edge every time you call,
And I know it would kill me if I fall,
I can't be alone with you,

She reached his apartment freezing up at the thought of what she was about to do. 'Don't be scared Brennan, you can do this.' She took a deep breath.

I can't be alone with you,

Brennan knocked on the door, waiting and waiting for what seemed like forever for an answer that didn't come.

Don't put your lips up to my mouth and tell me you can't stay,
Don't slip your hand under my shirt and tell me it's okay,
Don't say you're gone love me, cause you're gonna love me and leave,
I can't be alone with you.
You've got me out on the edge every time you call,
And I know it would kill me if I fall,
I can't be alone with you.

I don't see you laugh,
You don't call me back,

Brennan sighed, suppressing what few tears she had the energy left to cry and turned to go.

But Just as she began to walk away the door behind her opened. She turned to see Booth standing before her in his jeans.

Brennan smiled and kissed him pulling him in tightly.

But you kiss me when you're drunk…

"Tempe what are you doing here? ...And why are you soaked?"

"I lied. I didn't know it then, but I did." She confessed walking in past him and turning to meet his eyes. "I can't live without you. And I don't want to …I love you Seeley Booth."

Booth smiled, his thumb stroking her cheek. "I love you too, Temperance Brennan." He kissed her sweetly. Her arms wrap around his neck and he pulls her closer, not caring that she was soaked.

Despite the heat of the kiss Brennan begins to shiver. "Come on, let's get you out of those wet clothes." He said winking suggestively.

Brennan smiled for the first time in what felt like forever as he led her to his bedroom.

8 am. They awoke to a knock on the door.

"Who's that?" Brennan asked quietly not wanting to leave the warm bed with him in it.

Booth looked over at the clock, and sighed. "It's Rebecca. With Parker. She's early and I'm not ready."

Brennan smiled pulling away and pulling on his shirt. "Then I'll get it." She slipped on his boxers and headed to the door, buttoning as she went.

"No! don't you dare." He said hopping up and grabbing for his jeans before going after her. Giving her plenty of time to walk out and reach the front door.

Brennan heard Booth come running out of the room as she opened the door with a smile. Cam was standing before her, surprised by what she saw. Brennan's face fell and Booth stopped dead in his tracks.

"Oh my god." Cam said staring between the two of them.

"…Cam it's not what you think." Brennan broached carefully her eyes assessing the reaction on her face.

"So it is true." Cam said surprise morphing into glee.

"What's true?" Brennan turned to Booth. "What did you tell her?" her question loaded with poorly masked fear.

"Nothing." He said meeting them both at the door. "…It's not exactly like I was thinking about calling her last night." Booth gave her a look.

"Then how does she know, Seeley? I didn't tell her."

"Um… I can hear you," Cam pointed out. "And I figured it out on my own. …I just thought you two were off again. … well I'm gonna go… um here's the paperwork you forgot at the lab." She said handing Booth a folder.

"Uh Cam. …if you could not, y'know… that'd be great." Booth said giving her a look.

"Don't worry. I didn't see anything. I don't know anything. I was never here." She nodded and walked away.

"What did she mean by 'I thought the two of you were off again'? How long has she known?"

Booth sighed closing the door. "Beats me. …All I know is that you're not my dirty little secret anymore." he said smiling and pulling her into his arms.

"Now who said that?" she smiled pulling him into a passionate kiss as there was another knock on the door.

"One second." Booth called smiling and pulling Brennan back in momentarily.

She smiled peeling his shirt off and handing it to him to put on then heading back to his bedroom.

'That is so Hot.' He thought to himself putting his shirt on and answering the door.

"Hey Seeley." Rebecca said smiling.

"Hey Rebecca. Hey Buddy."

"Hi Dad." Parker said smiling up at him.

"Hey Parker why don't you go put your stuff in your room." Rebecca suggested looking straight at Booth.

"Ok." He ran past Booth and into his room.

"Seeley, you're not rebounding with Cam again are you?" Rebecca asked with a sigh.

"…No. …Why would you ask that?" he asked confused.

"I saw her walking out as we came in. she looked…preoccupied or something. And I know you and Temperance have been…" she trailed off.

"How did you know about…?" he asked raising an eyebrow.

"I could see it, Seeley. I'm not blind."

Brennan walked out, fully clothed and smiling. "Hey Rebecca."

"Always good to see you Temperance." She nodded.

"Thanks for Breakfast Booth. …See you Monday." Brennan said walking out past Rebecca.

Rebecca gave him a look, as Brennan rounded the corner towards the elevator. "Oh don't give me that Rebecca. She showed up in the middle of the night and we talked then had a little breakfast." He lied expertly.

"Uh-huh." Rebecca nodded amused. "Just no sleepovers while Parker's in the house ok?"

Booth nodded and Rebecca left.
