Bianca's POV
Everything's a blur. One minute Adam and I were talking in the car and the next he's being taken away by an ambulance.
Flashback
"Adam!" I shout in panic. I watch as his body collapses onto the pavement. I jump out of the car and rush over to him. His body feels limp as I try to prop him up. "Adam," I say again, trying to get him to respond. I use my free hand to grab my phone from my back pocket and dial 911.
"Hello, what is your emergency?"
I start to sputter out the words, "My boyfriend collapsed, I think he's unconscious, he looks really pale and-"
"Ma'am, where is your boyfriend now?"
I look around for a street sign, "Umm, we're in a parking lot right by 83rd and Crescent."
"Stay there I am dispatching an ambulance to your location."
"Thanks," I say. I end the call and slide the phone back in my pocket. "Everything's going to be okay," I whisper to Adam as I hold him.
Luckily it only takes the ambulance about 10 minutes to get here, yet it felt like an eternity with Adam's limp body in my arms.
"Please step back," one of the paramedics says to me. I reluctantly let go of Adam and they lift him onto a cart.
"Is he going to be okay?" I ask.
"I cannot disclose anything right now," he says as they slide the cart with Adam on it into the back of the ambulance. I try to climb in the back with Adam but the paramedic stops me, "Are you a family member?" He asks.
"No," I respond.
"Sorry ma'am, family members only are allowed in the back with the patient," he says, shutting the doors with Adam inside.
Slightly frustrated I ask, "What hospital are you taking him to?"
"Mercy Hospital," he says. After that he quickly climbs into the driver side of the ambulance, turns on his sirens, and speeds out of the lot.
End Flashback
I climb into my car, start the engine, and follow after the ambulance. Retrieving my phone out of my back pocket, I dial Drew's number, "Come on pick up the phone." It rings four times before I am sent to voicemail, "Hi you've reached-" Ugh Drew this is not the time to ignore me! I try again with the same result being his voicemail. Figures he's probably screening my calls. Great, I can either turn around to head toward the Torres household or go to Adam at the hospital.
I reluctantly turn around in direction of the Torres house. 20 minutes later I pull up, leave my car idling, and rush to the front door.
I pound on the front door until I get an answer, "Bianca, what are you doing here?" Mrs. Torres asks.
"Adam, he's in the hospital," I say in a rush. I don't have to say much else, my expression says it all.
"What?" She asks worriedly. However the question was more rhetorical than anything seeing as she did not wait for an answer. She grabs her coat and keys off the table and rushes back to the door, "Which hospital?"
"Mercy," I say.
"Do me a favor and get Drew, I'll meet you there," she says hurriedly. Before I can say anything else she is out the door.
I take a few steps toward the bottom of the staircase and shout up the stairs, "Drew!" I get nothing in reply so I head toward the basement. "Drew," I call again from the top of the stairs.
"What?" He grumbles back. I don't know if he even realizes it's me.
I take a few more steps down the stairs and see him playing Xbox with a headset on.
"Drew!" I snap at him. He looks over, his expression only worsening once he realizes it's me.
"Go away," he says, ignoring my presence.
"Drew, I don't have time for this. Adam is in the hospital," I say impatiently.
That gets his attention, "What?" He gets up from the couch, the worry on his face is evident.
"Come on, I'm taking you to go see him," I say. With only a few more words exchanged, Drew and I make it to the hospital.
…..
Adam's POV
Before I manage to open my eyes, I can hear a distant voice, almost whisper like. It's hard to discern whose talking. A few blinks later and the blurry room starts to become clear. I'm pretty sure I'm in a hospital.
"Adam," a voice whispers in relief, "You awake?"
"Drew?" I croak out.
"Hey," he says with a relieved look. He grabs a chair and pulls it up to my bedside. "You've looked better," he observes.
"Still better looking than you," I jest.
It earns a small chuckle, "You wish."
I clear my voice to say more but he stops me, "Don't strain yourself. Just sit there, relax." I nod my head in agreement. I can feel how weak I am. I can't tell if that's because I am drugged up or what.
A few moments of silence pass before I say what's on my mind, "Drew, I'm sorry."
He looks at me with a confused look, "For what?"
"Everything," I say. It's enough for him to know what I'm referring to.
After a while he says, "I'm sorry too."
"For what?" I ask.
"Everything," he answers.
I don't know if that means we're good, I don't know if that means he accepts Bianca and I as a couple, I don't really know what any of that meant, all I do know is that my brother is by my side regardless of everything else.
There's an elephant in the room and its name is Bianca. I really want to ask where she is but Drew isn't saying anything. Last I remember Bianca and I were in a parking lot together. Where is she now? Wouldn't she want to be here?
"Where's my phone?" I ask.
"Oh uh I have it," he says handing it over to me, "The nurses gave us what few possessions you had on you when you came in." I flip through to check for messages from Bianca but there are none.
Drew must be able to read my confusion, "Bianca will be here soon." Finally someone said her name. It's out there now.
"Oh okay," I say, slightly relieved.
A few seconds pass before Drew says what's on his mind, "I'm not mad anymore, about you and Bianca. I've had a lot of time to process it and although I'm not necessarily happy about it, I realized it's not worth losing a brother over."
I sigh in relief, "You mean that?"
"Of course I do. We're brothers no matter what Adam, no girl can change that." Drew says. "Anyway, I talked with Bianca about it while we were in the waiting room and I get it now. She and I aren't meant for each other." He still looks glum when he talks about it, but it looks like he got some closure.
"That means a lot to me, thanks bro," I say. Drew's blessing means a lot to me.
He slightly changes the subject, "I need to apologize for one more thing."
"Whatever it is, I forgive you," I say.
"No really, let me get this out there because it's been eating at me." He takes one deep breath before continuing, "You know what I said earlier to you, when we were about to come to blows, well I am really sorry. It was uncalled for and it's not true." I instantly know what he's referring to. I hate that he said it but he was pissed off so I get it. I don't hold him accountable for it.
"Don't worry about," I say, forgiving him.
A few moments pass before Drew realizes something, "I better get mom, she's in the cafeteria," he says, standing up from my bed side, "I'm glad you're okay Adam," he says just before leaving.
Shortly after Drew slipped out the door a doctor comes waltzing in, "Hello Adam, how are you feeling?" He asks. I just shrug.
"Right, well you had quite the night. When you arrived here you had some internal bleeding that, if left untreated, could have done some serious damage. However, I conducted an exploratory laparotomy to locate the bleeding and stop it."
"Great," I say.
"That being said, I want to keep you here overnight for observation," the doctor says.
"Okay," I say. I wonder what time it is. How long have I been here?
The doctor makes his leave and my mom and Drew re-enter the room, "Honey, you're awake, how are you feeling?" She asks, moving immediately to my bed side. She gently strokes the top of my head like mothers do.
"I'm good," I say.
"You had me worried sick. This is officially two too many times you've been in the hospital this year. No more, okay? I don't think I could handle it."
"No more hospital trips," I agree. At least this time I'm not shot.
"Drew told me what happened. No more horsing around like that, okay?" She scolds.
"Okay mom," I say. I don't know what Drew told her but I guarantee it wasn't the truth.
"They told me you have to stay overnight. Bianca went to get some of your stuff, change of clothes, toothbrush, etc. Anything else you might want?" She asks. So that's where Bianca went.
"Don't think so," I say. All I really need is Bianca here by my side.
…..
Bianca's POV
I hope Adam's awake by the time I get back. Even though the doctors told us he was going to be fine, I just need to see him awake and breathing.
I quickly rummage through his closet and find a change of clothes. I then move to the bathroom and grab some necessities I think he might need. After that I head downstairs to the basement and grab a couple movies in case he gets bored.
I know he'll only be there for one night, but I don't want him to be too bored in there. Anything else he might need? Snacks? No they have food there. Reading material? I grab a comic book off the book shelf, just in case he feels like reading. Okay I think I have everything.
I make my way out of the house and back to the hospital. Once there, I speed walk to Adam's room. I swing the door open only to find an empty hospital bed.
Where is he? What happened?
I'm trying to keep the panic from rising but my mind is already jumping to conclusions.
There is no way he's gone. I just saw him less than an hour ago. The doctors told me he was going to be fine.
Staring at the empty room I can feel my knees go weak. There's already a pain in my chest where my heart used to be beating. Holding back the choking feeling in my throat, I close the door to the room and turn around. I glance in all directions, no sign of Adam or his family.
I make my way back down the hall to the nurse's station. "Where is he?" I ask anxiously, "Where's Adam?"
The nurse glances up at me, registering my panic, and calmly replies, "I'm sorry miss, who are you looking for?"
"My boyfriend," I take a small breath, "he was- he was there," I point down the hall, "now he's not," I say worriedly.
"What's his name?" The nurse asks, ready to look it up on the computer in front of her.
"Adam, Adam Torres," I say quickly.
She types a few things before an unsettling look crosses her face, "I'm sorry miss," she says.
I interject, "What why?" Please don't confirm my worst fear.
"There is no one at this hospital by that name," she says. She types a few more things before adding, "However, there is a different Torres here. Does Gracie sound familiar?" She asks.
"Oh uh yeah, that's the one," I say.
"Right, well the patient was moved to a different room seeing as she no longer needed to be in the ICU," she tells me.
Relief floods over me. He's okay. He was just moved. Nothing happened. He's still alive. I need to go to him.
I don't bother wasting time correcting her incorrect pronoun, I just want to see Adam, "Where did they move him to?"
"One floor up, room 322," she informs me.
"Thanks," I say quickly, turning around to head toward the elevator.
Once the elevator doors open, I quickly find the right hall and start counting down the door numbers. 316, 318, 320, and finally 322. The door is closed so I knock rather loudly.
Drew opens to door and I quickly step into the room.
I breathe a huge sigh of relief once my eyes fall upon Adam. There he is, lying in bed with his eyes closed. His mother is sitting in a chair next to him.
I hear Drew close the door behind me as I take the few short steps to reach Adam.
"Bianca," Audra says, "Thank you so much for getting some of his things."
"Of course," I say in reply while looking down at Adam. He looks so peaceful. "Has he woken up yet?" I ask.
"Yeah a little bit ago but they just upped his pain meds and he fell right back to sleep," Audra says.
I reach out to gently stroke his face. His eyes flutter but they don't open.
"Here let me take that," Drew says, taking the duffle bag from my shoulder.
"Thanks."
"It's getting late," Audra says, "You two should go home, get some rest, it's still a school day tomorrow."
There's no way I'm leaving without him knowing I'm here, "Uh I think I'm going to stay for a while if that's alright with you."
"Yeah mom why don't you give me a lift home instead?" Drew asks.
Audra ponders this for a second before agreeing, "Okay." She leans in and kisses Adam on the forehead, "I'll be right back," she whispers.
The two leave the room, shutting the door after them. I take a moment to silently thank Drew for giving me some alone time with Adam.
I take the seat that his mother was sitting in and reach out to take his unresponsive hand in mine. I squeeze gently, hoping for some kind of reaction. "You can't scare me like that. Watching you collapse was the most terrifying thing ever. My heart literally stopped. I've had too much time to think the worst of this situation. If you weren't going to be okay, I don't know what I would do. Life without you doesn't feel worth living." I can't help but look at him expectantly, waiting for any kind of response. "You have to be okay, you need to wake up and tell me everything's going to be okay, because I love you Adam Torres."
I feel his hand squeeze mine and notice his eyes start to flutter. "Everything is going to be okay," he says in a low voice, flashing a weak smile too.
"Adam," I sigh in relief.
A/N: I don't know how i feel about this chapter. As you can probably tell, it was a struggle to write, especially because it took me so long. I am not completely satisfied with the chapter but you guys definitely deserve an update. So here it is. I am stuck with the story. Don't know where to take it or how to end it. Any and all comments are helpful. Thanks for reading.
