He was standing by her house, the trees hiding him from view, but nothing hid from his eyes. He was watching her, all the time, everywhere. It seemed he couldn't stay away, no matter how much he tried and he really did try. Sure, he needed her for a reason, but that didn't require him watching her all the time. It definitely didn't require him lurking around in the shadows, simply watching her read a book or play music while she sorted out her clothes.
The more he watched her, the more wary he grew of the fact that he was going to hurt this girl. A lot. He needed her for his plan and in order for said plan to work, he would have to compel her, use her. Now, he had no intentions of sparing her and dropping everything. But there was something inside him, some unknown force trying to make him change his plans, feeling sorry for her.
"Oh shut up," Damon snapped to himself, preventing himself from smacking his own head. He'd had enough of this nagging feeling concerning Caroline. He was Damon Salvatore, for heavens sake! She was an ordinary girl, she was a nobody, just like every other person he'd ever used and discarded afterwards. Nothing was different this time and nothing would be different either. She was nothing to him.
Though something inside told him otherwise, Damon pursed his lips and watched as Caroline turned off the light in her bedroom. He'd overheard her talking to that other Bonnie girl about coming over so it was a perfect opportunity for him to make a move on her and just get her to go with him. He just hoped she was walking because he really couldn't come up with any plans if she decided to drive over there.
He crouched slightly as Caroline stepped out and grinned at the beautiful weather. For a moment, Damon froze as he admired how the sun was radiating all around her, like a halo almost. Caroline truly was beautiful. But then, as though coming out of a trance, he shook his head and refocused on what was going on. The Sheriff had stepped out as well and both were walking towards her car so Caroline was being dropped off.
"Oh come on," Damon groaned as the car drove off. He closed his eyes, patience wavering, as he thought of what to do. He contemplated leaving it and just drinking at the Grill, but something made him want to follow the car. He just felt a pull towards her, wherever she went, and so he raced after the car and stopped a slight distance away from Bonnie's house.
He waited there for a while, waiting for the car to show up, but instead he was met with the sight of Caroline walking along the road. Caroline was walking anyway, and she was all alone! Damon smirked to himself as he raced along the houses to come up behind her. He was intending on just grabbing her and rush away into the woods or something, but as he saw her walk ahead, smiling at herself, almost skipping, he couldn't help but want to continue watching her, let her stay as peaceful and happy as she was at the moment. So instead of following the plan, though he was quite unsure why he even hesitated, he walked up behind her.
Caroline's steps haltered slightly as everything became eerily quiet and a chill crept up her spine when she heard footsteps behind her. Normally, she wouldn't think anything of it, but she knew who was watching her, waiting for her. She wasn't safe anymore, not when she was alone.
Her fears were confirmed when she turned around to see Damon standing right behind her. She forced herself to not scream or show any sign of fear. But that didn't stop her form flinching slightly. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you," Damon apologized, that stupid smirk on his face instantly. Caroline took a deep breath, shaking her head. "No problem, I-I was just startled," she admitted, her heartbeat starting to quicken. "Wh-what are you doing here?" she asked as she slowly turned around, starting to walk.
Damon fell in pace with her, hands swinging by his sides, his strides long and graceful. "Just taking a stroll," he replied, flashing her a grin as she threw him a sideways glance. Honestly, she wasn't as bothered by the fact that he was walking with her as she would've been. She was just thankful he hadn't grabbed her right on spot. "What about you, where are you headed?" Damon asked and Caroline was more than happy to keep chatting, Bonnie's house would be in view in just a few more yards.
"I-I am actually going to visit Bonnie, if you remember her from the dinner at Elena's," Caroline piped, her voice slightly uneasy. "Oh yeah, I remember her," Damon said, and Caroline noticed he kept his gaze on her the entire time though she only looked ahead. "We had a little chat after you left so abruptly, a shame really. What was that immergency, by the way?" Damon wondered and Caroline didn't know what he was talking about for a second, before she recalled how she'd excused herself by saying there was an immergency. "Oh that? That was just a, um, kind of mother-daughter thing, you know. Gotta be used to abrupt things when your mom is the Sheriff like right now, she got a call and had to leave me halfway," Caroline chimed.
That wasn't entirely untrue, the Sheriff had gotten a call about two other bodies found in the woods. Caroline, in silent horror, listened to the station radio telling the Sheriff about the mutilated corpses. Caroline knew the reason, of course, but she couldn't say anything. Unfortunately, she knew the look her mother had on her face. It was one of those looks where you knew something was starting to dawn upon the person, starting to make sense. Caroline only hoped they wouldn't realize what was killing all those people, atleast not entirely.
Her breath hitched as she realized the murderer was walking beside her at the very moment.
"Well, maybe you and I could go out some place and you know, chat," Damon smirked, looking straight at her. "I-I don't know, I don't really have much free time," Caroline mumbled before she sighed inwardly, Bonnie's house being straight ahead. She saw Bonnie in the window of her bedroom. Damon noticed her relax and realized their destination had arrived. But he had to chat her up before she could just leave, and he really didn't have much time. "Come on, what does a guy have to do to ask you out?" he grinned, suddenly stopping and grabbing Caroline's hand, making her stop in her tracks as well.
Her relaxed state suddenly grew alert again as she looked at Damon. "I'm not really looking for a relationship right now," Caroline spoke cautiously, her eyes drifting to Bonnie's house. Damon's smile was a bit too tight as he tightened his hold on her hand slightly. "Come on, barbie, one date," he said tightlipped. Caroline's heart was pounding against her ribcage by now as she slowly removed her hand from his hold. Damon's eyes followed the movement, his time running out. "I'm sorry, but I have to go," Caroline chided, starting to walk quickly.
She only took a couple of steps before Damon had grabbed her hand again, turning her towards him. "I'm asking you nicely because I want to get to know you, and you're being plain rude," Damon said angrily, his voice low, almost a growl, patience lost now. Caroline felt the fear set in completely, her hands starting to shake. "I-I'm in the middle of s-something so just-" Caroline muttered as she tried to pry his fingers off, but Damon only tightened his grip on her hand. "Maybe I should stop being nice, then," Damon snarled, pulling her towards him. "Let go of me!" Caroline hissed and as Damon gave her a menacing grin, her name was suddenly shouted from behind her.
Both of them turned to look at Bonnie and her grandmother standing on their porch, looking at her and Damon. Caroline saw Bonnie's eyes widen, but her grandmother's gaze was fixed on Damon. Slowly but surely, Damon's hold on Caroline loosened as Caroline turned to look at him. He was glaring at Bonnie and her grandmother as he stepped back, allowing Caroline to move away from him at once. "I'll see you around, barbie," Damon called, but Caroline would be damned if she even cast a glance backwards as she walked straight towards Bonnie's house.
Once safely over the threshold, Caroline dared chancing a glance outside to see Damon looking right at her, his eyes dark, his grin menacing. As soon as he'd seen her look at him, he slowly stepped around and walked back the way they'd been coming. Caroline slammed the door shut before turning around to see Bonnie giving her a wide-eyed look. "What the hell was that about?" she asked alarmed.
Caroline shook her head, taking a deep breath. "If only I knew," she sighed. "Caroline," Bonnie emphasized, grabbing a hold of her hand. "What was he saying to you, why was he holding you like that?" Bonnie asked rapidly, her grip on Caroline's hand tight. "Nothing, he was just talking," Caroline frowned, wincing slightly as she pried Bonnie's fingers off. "Talking about?" Bonnie questioned, making Caroline eye her confusedly. "Bon, is everything alright with you?" Caroline asked curiously, wondering why Bonnie was so worked up about Damon.
"Caroline, I have a bad feeling about Damon," Bonnie admitted, making Caroline straighten her back. "I just- I don't know, I just feel like he doesn't have the best intentions, like he's hiding something. Just, don't get too friendly with him, okay?" Bonnie said worriedly, genuine concern written all over her face. Caroline took a hold of her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Alright, anything for you," Caroline nodded, smiling as Bonnie grinned before leading her upstairs to her room.
Caroline understood Bonnie's senses probably kicked in by the time she'd seen Damon at Elena's so she knew how to detect evil in people. Atleast Bonnie was safe from Damon, considering her grandmother was a powerful witch that Damon, though he'd never admit, was slightly scared of. Caroline wondered whether she should just stay here with Bonnie and the protection of her grandmother for a second, but quickly shook her head and refocused on Bonnie talking about the Founder's Party tomorrow.
"Damn witches," Damon hissed as he walked away from the house. He was so close! He almost had Caroline. He didn't really know why he was playing so nice when he could've just smacked her over the head and taken her right there. He just thought it might be so much easier if she went willingly because it wouldn't require her putting up a fight and alerting people or wasting his energy. He figured he could persuade her instead of using violence, but that wasn't as successful as he would've liked it to be.
He'd decided to screw the niceties, but the witch had already intervened and started sending funny signals to his brain. He knew he would be on his knees, growling out in pain from aneurisms, had he tried to take Caroline. So he had to simply let go and watch her run away. Damon couldn't really understand what it was, but something had pained him as he'd watched Caroline walk away from him. He'd found himself rooted to the spot, waiting for her to glance back, wanting her to look back at him.
Once she'd done exactly that, he'd regained control of his body and started to move. He didn't know what all that was about, why his body had acted that way, but he didn't think much of it. Huffing, he made his way to the woods, knowing the bodies would probably have been found by now. He needed to put in a good word for himself with the Sheriff and the local police, in case he'd need it in the future. He rushed over to the woods and stopped a slight distance away from where he'd drained and ripped out the throats of the couple he'd stumbled upon last night. He slowly walked towards the scene, noting the Sheriff standing by the sidelines, viewing the scene while the rest of the workers scrambled around, doing their notings and taking pictures and whatnot.
"Any clues?" he asked and noted, with surprise, how the Sheriff was barely startled. She turned around, arching an eyebrow at seeing Damon standing behind her. "Animal attack," she stated, eyeing him suspiciously. "Sorry, haven't introduced myself. I'm Damon Salvatore," Damon greeted, extending his hand for her to shake. "Sheriff Forbes," the Sheriff said, shaking his hand. "You're Stefan's brother, right?" she asked.
"Yep, that would be me," Damon smiled tightly, supressing the urge to roll his eyes at how he was recognized. Stefan's brother. "You're not really supposed to be here though, Damon," Liz said as she turned her attention back to the bodies. "I know, I was passing by and thought I should check out the scene," Damon started, stepping forwards to stand beside her. "These aren't the first ones, I suppose, judging by how deep in thought you are." Damon gave her a sideways glance as she looked at him.
"No, they aren't. That's what has us so worked up," Liz admitted, sighing. Damon carefully looked around, making sure no one were listening on. "If you don't mind, I might have some theories on what could have caused these killings," Damon whispered, watching as she shifted her entire body towards him, her eyes narrowing. "You think you can solve all these murders?" Liz asked, tone slightly incredulous. "I'm not saying I'm an expert here," Damon replied modestly. "All I'm saying is there's more to these killings than what people think, and I'm not talking about animal attacks here," Damon clarified, noting how the Sheriff's eyes widened, realization and understanding flashing in them.
She took a quick look around them before turning back to him. "I think we should talk somewhere private," she whispered, starting to lead the way. Damon smirked knowingly, sauntering behind her.
