The annual Founders' Party. Caroline remembered how it had been the last time, but this time, she didn't want anything to do with that place. That night only held horrible memories for her, related to every single person she knew, not just Damon. She wanted to just sleep in and maybe watch a movie or something like that. Anything that would keep her occupied in the safety of her home was a welcoming thought.

But the minute she'd received the text from Stefan- and her mother's continued insistence she attend the party- she'd changed her mind. Stefan wanted her to be there, saying it would be fun and they could catch up. She hadn't seen him since he'd left school yesterday and even though it had barely been a day, she felt as though she couldn't last two minutes without seeing him one way or another. It was quite weird, if she was honest, to be so emotionally attached to someone, that you could barely go a day without seeing them.

Seeing Stefan would be worth taking the trouble to attend the party so she had a warm shower, picked out an outfit and drove to the Lockwood's with her mum. She met up with some friends as her mom walked off to the Mayor. Caroline half-heartedly conversed with the girls, her eyes scanning the room for Stefan while her mind remembered the events that had taken place the first time she'd been through this party. She couldn't, wouldn't let anything like that happen again, she was sure of it.

Maybe not so much, she corrected as she saw Damon walk in, his eyes landing on her. He made a beeline, coming straight for her, his smirk in place. Caroline felt her mind go numb once again, her hands starting to shake as she tried to come up with some sort of plan to run as far away from him as she could. He was by far the last person she wanted to meet and yet, he was on his way and she just stood there. Damon was only a couple of feet away when a tap on her shoulder had her turning around.

"Join me for a dance," Stefan smiled, holding out his hand. Caroline, without hesitation, placed her hand in his, letting him lead her to the dancefloor. Once again, Stefan was her saviour. She chanced a glance where she'd been standing, seeing Damon stand there, his jaw clenched, his face angry. Caroline quickly looked away, focusing on Stefan. "You look dapper," she told him, though she really wanted to say he looked all kinds of hot and handsome. He did, after all, look smashing in suits.

"And you look beautiful, as always," Stefan replied, placing his hand on her back, the other holding hers. "Thanks, I try my best," Caroline admitted, looking around the room. "Where's Elena?" she asked, wondering what Elena had been doing the first time this happened. She couldn't remember anything so she focused back on Stefan, letting her eyes roam his face. "She's with Bonnie somewhere," Stefan said absentmindedly, his eyes on her. "Caroline, do you trust me?"

Caroline looked at him, slightly taken aback, noticing for the first time that Stefan looked upset. "Why do you ask?" she frowned, looking at him questioningly. Stefan threw a glance around the room as the music stopped and the Mayor walked ahead, preparing for her speech. "Do you?" Stefan urged, the intensity in his eyes making her nervous. Of course, she trusted him. More than anyone else. "Yes, Stefan, I trust you," she assured, smiling. "Good," Stefan sighed, returning her smile. "I won't let you down on that."

"I'm sure," Caroline said genuinly, knowing Stefan wouldn't betray her. She still felt a little uneasy as she drank from the glass he handed her, but she didn't think much of it because of Damon entering the room with Elena, just as the Mayor finished her speech and people started clapping. "I'll be right back," Stefan muttered before making his way towards Damon and Elena. Caroline wanted to grab him and never let go, feeling utterly weak without him by her side as she looked at Damon, but she simply nodded.

She looked after Stefan, seeing him place his arm around Elena, leading her away from Damon, whispering something to her. Elena frowned at him before whispering back, as though reassuring him of something. Stefan looked upset, speaking in hushed tones, his brows furrowing the way they did whenever he felt guilty about something. Elena persistently repeated things to him and when Stefan shook his head, she cupped his face, said one last thing that worded horribly similar to an "I love you", and pulled him in for a kiss. Caroline felt her heart twist, telling her she'd seen enough. She turned around and walked towards the open doors leading to the garden.

The fresh air greeted her, drying up her watering eyes for a moment before they were filling up with tears again as she walked further along. She knew she didn't have a very valid reason to be upset right now, considering this Stefan loved Elena and was with her. But Caroline knew what they didn't know; she knew Stefan would love her, that they would be together in the end. It hurt to see him with someone else now, because she loved him just the way she did in the future.

Seeing him with Elena was torture, yes, but she would tolerate it if it meant she could fix the outcome of everything. She would just look the other way, no matter how much it pained her.

"Beautiful night," came a husky voice from behind, making her stop in her tracks. She felt the goosebumps rise, but they weren't caused by the chilly weather. Slowly, she turned around to come face to face with Damon. "But not as beautiful as you," he smirked, towering over her, looking gorgeous as usual. Caroline didn't say anything except simply stare at him, eyes slightly wide with fear. Damon cleared his throat, obviously trying to make an effort at being nice. "I'm sorry for how our last encounter went, by the way, I was just in a mood," Damon apologized, though nowhere as sincerely as one would want.

Caroline regarded him for a second and found it odd how she didn't feel emotionally connected to this Damon at all. There were no feelings for him, even if he looked the same, even if he was 60 % the same Damon. With Stefan, it was different. She was just as in love with this Stefan as she was in the future. But Damon, he was nothing but a threat to her life.

The life she had currently put in a very dangerous situation by coming out here, alone, in the dark, accompanied by the vampire that had no emotions and was determined to use her as a tool, without the support of another vampire who was inside with his girlfriend. Way to go..

"Anyway, why is a gorgeous lady such as yourself out here, all alone?" Damon asked, one hand in his pocket, the other fiddling with his hair. Caroline inwardly rolled her eyes at the flirtative tone, wanting to just wack him over the head and run for her life. She wouldn't get far, of course, before he'd catch her. If anything, running would only make it more enjoyable for Damon considering he loved a good chase. "I don't really want to be here but I'm the Sheriff's daughter, kind of have no choice," Caroline piped, feeling herself getting nervous by the lack of plans in her brain.

How was she supposed to just get back inside that house? As far as her brain could think, and it wasn't very far right then, there was no way out of this mess. No one was around to help, she didn't have any vervain considering she'd been so dependent of Stefan being around her all the time and she didn't have the patience or courage to be flirtatious so she could keep Damon busy until someone decided to come out into the garden.

"What brings you here?" she asked, deciding to chatter so she could get some time to think. "Oh, I came to retrieve this beauty," Damon said, pulling out a crystal from his pocket and holding it in front of Caroline to see. Caroline remembered the crystal, but for the life of her, she couldn't remember what it was necessary for. "Nice, I guess," she mumbled as she held it, pretending to examine it though she was actually looking towards the house, seeing the people inside. Maybe she could yell Stefan's name, he'd hear her with that heightened hearing. But what if he didn't think anything of it, what if he was busy smooching Elena? What if Damon just finished her off before Stefan even got there?

Damon wouldn't hesitate in ripping out her throat, whether Stefan intervened or not. The odds were really not in her favour, right now. She mulled over her choices and realized, to her utter disappointment and slight horror, that she really didn't have any choices in this situation. Everything would go according to Damon's mood, which basically meant that she was screwed seven ways to hell.

"I don't get it. Girls would kill to have a piece of this badboy, but not you. It really frustrates me that you don't pay attention to me," Damon said annoyed, out of the blue, his voice no longer flirtative. Caroline blinked at him, her pulse slowly rising. "You know, I've always had a thing for blondes," he whispered seductively, stepping closer to her. "Well, I never really understood the whole badboy thing, bit of a turn off really," she chided, momentarily forgetting who she was talking to. "Now, if you'll excuse me," she added, quickly, deciding to walk away before doing any further damage, hoping against hope that he'd just let her go tonight.

Damon, however, caught hold of her wrist, giving her a daring look when she looked at him, brows raised. "Let go of my hand," Caroline ordered, her heartbeat skyrocketing by his tight hold on her hand. "Oh, I don't think so, barbie," Damon said, a mad glint in his eyes. "I said let go of my hand!" Caroline hissed, trying to pry his fingers off, punching his chest. "Fiesty, aren't you?" Damon breathed, pulling her flush against him, one arm wrapped around her, the other holding both her hands. "People don't just reject this face. You were my way into the Gilbert home, blondie, but you suddenly decided to become all noble."

Damon's eyes were turning darker, his face hardening. Caroline whimpered as he tightened his hold on her. "Please, just let me go," Caroline pleaded, knowing there really was nothing else she could do except plead. "See, I can't really do that anymore," Damon sneered, grinning at her. "I wasn't going to hurt you, well, not much anyway. You actually grew on me a little so I might've kept you around a little longer even. This could've gone so much better if you'd just accepted my advances the very first time you laid eyes on me." Damon chuckled as Caroline tried to wrestle her way out of his arms, her breathing turning rapid.

"Please, don't kill me!" she cried hopelessly and as Damon merely grinned, she decided to take a chance. "Stefan!" she screamed, causing Damon's smirk to fall. "Stefan! Stefan, help me! He-"

Damon's hand was over her mouth, effectively muffling her screams. "I didn't want it to be like this, but you've tested my patience enough!" Damon growled and Caroline could only gasp as Damon's eyes turned black, veins popping underneath, fangs baring. Without a second of hesitation, he sunk his fangs in her neck, her screams muffled by the collar of his jacket. Caroline felt the sharp teeth ripping at her skin, felt the blood flow, felt him moan against her.

For some reason, the pain wasn't as much as she'd expected. If anything, it was quite bearable, but it was still painful and she whimpered, Damon's hand still muffling her screams. Caroline felt lightheaded, felt her knees grow weaker and all she could think of was letting down everyone. All she could think of was Stefan, too busy with Elena to realize that Caroline was fighting for her last breath.

Suddenly, Damon pulled back, his eyes wide. He started coughing, spluttering blood on the ground, holding his throat. "What the-" he choked, staring wide eyed at her. "What did you do?" he growled, but his state only weakened as he fell to his knees before going totally flat on the ground. Caroline found herself falling as well, the aftermath of Damon's feeding coming to work, sending her tumbling down to the ground. She didn't feel herself collide with it, though her mind was pretty clouded by now so she didn't know whether she was falling or simply floating in midair.

Just as she blacked out, she heard the soft whisper of a familliar voice.

"You're gonna be fine, you're safe. I've got you."
