My eyes widened and I know I was gaping like a fish. My death?! Was he finally turning me, or worse? I gulped audibly.
"M-my death?" He chuckled lightly.
"Not your real death Bella, but if they believe you're dead they will not look for you, meaning we can spend the rest of your days peacefully."
"The rest of my days?"
"Well, yes darling. I've chosen to let you remain human, as was always meant to be."
"But Edward you promised!" I jumped up to sit on my hands and knees, effectively knocking over the tray holding my breakfast.
"Yes and you promised you would love me forever!"
"What the hell? I will always love you!" He pinched the bridge of his nose and remained silent for a few moments. When he finally spoke again his voice was much calmer.
"Bella, look at the mess you've made." I took a deep breath and I sat back down.
"I apologize Edward, but you're talking crazy and saying strange things. We had a deal.. you promised you'd turn me yourself if I married you." I could feel the tears stinging my eyes as I bit my lower lip. He didn't say anything for a long while, so long in fact that I thought he'd left. When I looked up he was staring at me as though he was seeing through me.
"Oh Bella, how I wish I could read your mind. I was merely testing you my dear. Instead of you marrying me for love, you married me as a compromise for things you wanted. You were ready to make the transition from a young girl to a young woman, so you offered me your virginity in exchange for marriage. Me changing you was something you've wanted since you found out about me. However, it wasn't because you truly wished to spend eternity with me, it was due to the fact that you are terrified of aging. I guess I should blame Renee for that," he finally focused on me and his eyes looks pained. "Oh sweetheart, how I wish you loved me as I love you." Was he serious? Did he really believe those things? I love Edward with every fiber in my being. How could he think those horrible thoughts? Before I could speak he began cleaning up the spilled tray.
"Edward, I love you. If I need to prove that to you by staying human for a while longer then I will." I reached for his left hand and I touched his wedding band. "I don't know what's going on with you right now, but I am your wife and I will stand by you until you're normal again." I looked in his beautiful eyes and I saw a slow smile spread across his face. He placed a tender kiss on my forehead.
"You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that. I'm going to take this to the kitchen and I'll come back to strip the soiled bed linen. Afterwards we can take a tour of your new home." He was out of the room before I could blink. This day has been so crazy! I can't believe my feelings for Jake has caused so much trouble! 'If Edward never left, those feelings wouldn't have developed.' I felt like I had just been slapped in the face. Since when was my inner voice become such a...bitch? I shook my head to clear it. First things first, I need to try to figure out how I would get in touch with Carlisle. I need the family right now. Edward is... (I winced from even thinking this about the love of my life) certifiably insane. I wonder, do they have asylums for vampires? I sat for about five minutes when an idea struck me. I decided to try to write a letter out, hoping it would trigger a vision for Alice and she would alert Carlisle and the others! No sooner than I got out of bed and started rummaging through the drawers for pen and paper I felt Edwards cold hands on my waist. "What are you doing love?" I instantly stilled.
"I was just looking for a pair of socks." He turned my body around to face him. "Really? Well, I just received an interesting phone call from Alice."
