Short Story #5: Scarlet and Lloyd in High School

Lloyd sat on the bleachers watching his best friend play in a soccer game along with Scarlet's family and a bunch of other people. She stole the ball from a nearby opponent and ran with it. He smiled and clapped along with the rest of her supporters. "She's so hot," someone behind him said and he turned around to glare at the person who said it.
The guy's smiled disappeared and Lloyd turned back around. "Who's that?" someone whispered.
"Her boyfriend?"
"No, they're best friends."

He turned his attention back to Scarlet who scored a goal since he stopped looking. He noticed a huge girl get off the bench and join the game, and she was looking right at Scarlet. Lloyd watched the girl examine Scarlet and figure out she was the strongest by how she scored another goal. 'Be careful...' he thought. 'She looks like she'll eat you...'
Scarlet had the ball with her when the bigger girl completed blind sided her. She took the ball and made her own goal while Scarlet lay on the ground. Of course her coach went up to her shortly but she waved him off and got back up. Lloyd clapped but he was still worried. Scarlet's enemy was still in the mix and went right after the smaller girl.

Again, she was blind sided but this time she was stabbed by cleats in her thigh. She fell to the ground again but got up quicker with a vengeful eye. Scarlet was about to go attack but her coach whistled. "SCARLET! Defense, now!" the girl gave a confused look, but simply ran over to the goal and switched places with her teammate.
The huge girl noticed Scarlet was now at the goal and smirked. Instead of aiming past Scarlet to get a goal, she aimed for the girl's head and kicked powerfully.

Everyone watched the ball hit Scarlet straight in her face and there was silence as she fell backward. Quickly, everyone circled around the fallen girl and Lloyd got up to run on the field and push through the small crowd. "Scarlet? Scarlet, you awake?" he knelt down and her upper body up.

She groaned. "Fine..." she mumbled. Everyone seemed to breath a sigh of relief but the coach examined the now huge bruise on her forehead. "She can't play, she'll get a worse injury than she has now." he said. "Take her home."

...
"Who was the first president of the United States?" Lloyd asked as Scarlet lay in her bed.
"George Washington..." she groaned.
"What's fifteen times two?"
"Enough already," she threw a pillow at him. "that was like the fifteenth question."
He caught it. "You can't fall asleep with a concussion, so I'm keeping you awake."
"It's not a concussion, Lloyd." she laughed. "It's just a bruise and the pain killers are making me drowsy, doctor said so."

He sighed. "Fine..." he leaned back in the chair he sat in.
Scarlet smiled. "Thank you, though...You carried me into the hospital, then to the car, then to my room."
"Yeah, was a lot of work, I think you need to lose some weight."
She smacked his arm. "Shut up," she turned her back to him and started dozing off.

Lloyd waited until she was completely asleep before he slipped off his sneakers and climbed into her bed. He wrapped his arms around her stomach and buried his face in her hair. She was a heavy sleeper so he always did this...He didn't know why. "I love you..." he said. "But you're asleep so you can't hear this so what's the point?"
He hugged her tighter. "I'm scared that one day you'll wake up while I'm doing this and smack me..." He sighed. "I'm stuck being your buddy, aren't I?"

Of course he didn't get an answer and he sighed again and turned her body over to face him. He tilted her head up and kissed her. This wasn't the first time they kissed in her sleep. He pulled away and hugged her into his chest. "This is why I can't get a girlfriend...This would probably be cheating..." he looked down at the top of her head. "I'm sorry..."
