Short Story #6: After the Blackout
After the blackout, there was darkness in the streets, the only lights for miles and miles shined out officially...
Jayleene's eyes popped open when she realized her night light flickered off on her desk. The battery powered device died and she jumped up, but quickly faltered. She felt vulnerable in the darkness, like something could easily grab her at any second.
The Ninjago City wide blackout had been going on for two days straight, but she wasn't worried because of her night light, until now...
She froze for a moment, looking and feeling around her for any threats, she grabbed a nearby pocket knife and then swiftly ran out the room.
The ship was even creepier and more silent when there was no electricity. Fear crept even deeper as she ran for the nearest bedroom to camp out in someone's room. 'Wait...I am light...' she thought and realized the running was pointless. She opened the door next to her and walked in, then turned her back to the door and shut her eyes. 'Focus...'
Little bits of lightning flickered around Jayleene and slowly light glew around her. She opened her eyes and her powers immediately shut off at the sight of a dark purple glow surrounding a black figure in the room she didn't notice.
She shrieked and nearly broke the door knob, running out the room. Her fears were real, there were real threats.
Angel stood in the room with a raised eyebrow. Because of the darkness, her powers showed unintentionally when she didn't pay attention. "The fuck is her problem...?" she mumbled.
Zane, who was in the corner simply shrugged.
Meanwhile, Jayleene continued to run and decided the best place to be was outside. At least there was moonlight, better than nothing. She burst into the open air of the deck of the ship and fell to the ground, breathing hard.
She looked up and did a double-take when somebody turned around with red liquid spread all over their face. "FUCK!" she screamed and rushed to her feet to run back inside.
Lloyd stood and shrugged and continued to eat his cherry filled donut.
Jayleene ran straight to Kai's room and pounded on the door. At the fifteenth or so pound, the door eerily opened, creaking and she slowly walked in.
"RAWR!" a huge dragon popped out in front of her and she fell back onto the floor and crawled into a ball. Kai took off the mask and started to laugh but stopped when he saw his girlfriend crying on the floor. "I don't wanna' die, please, I don't wanna' die..." she squeaked and hid her face. He immediately felt awful.
"H-hey, it was a joke, c'mon..." he sat her up and put his arms around her.
She flinched when he petted her head. "I-It's too dark, Kai..."
"What happened to the night light...?" he asked, remembering her intense fear of the dark. This was the one night he forgot to sleep in her room to keep her sane.
"Battery died." she said in his chest.
Kai picked her up and carried her to his bed where he laid next to her. He focused until a warm glow came out and lit the room slightly. Jayleene's grip on him loosened and he felt her fall asleep. He didn't dare black-out in fear she'd wake up.
About four hours later, he heard every electronic on the ship and below in the city light up again. He listened to the cheers from the citizens below and smiled, looking at the clock. It was 5:00 A.M.
"Jayleene..." he mumbled and adjusted her.
She shifted slightly and opened her eyes. "Thank you..."
He nodded.
'This blackout's over and I'm ready for the light...'
