Chapter 14
Jacob's POV
I was running late for school when I spotted Hope jogging down the road. Having heard my guardian's discussion while I downed a bowl of cereal this morning, I knew she was supposed to be in school where Esme planned to drop her off not running down the road during school hours. She looked upset, and to be honest, I was looking for an excuse to see her again so I decided to see what she was up to. A couple blocks down she ran up the driveway to a house I could only assume belonged to her family and disappeared inside. I pulled the truck to the side of the road debating whether or not to approach the door when I heard her screaming inside. Without taking a moment to second guess myself, I leaped to my feet and ran inside the house.
She was inside a bedroom trying to wake up a woman who I remembered being named her guardian. There were pills scattered along the nightstand and vomit on the bed. The woman was unresponsive. Hope was hysterical, her breathing coming in sharp breaths, and I knew she was in no condition to handle the situation. I reached out a reassuring hand to rest on her arm and her face distorted before she broke before me.
I moved her to the side and set to work checking for a pulse while speed dialing 911. I gave the operator what little information I had before starting CPR. There was a pulse but it was weak and I wasn't sure we could save her. I wanted to step away from the woman and take Hope into my arms, but right now, my focus had to be saving her aunt.
The paramedics arrived swiftly; I was grateful to see Emmett leading the gurney in. I filled him in as best I could and let him jump in. Turning around, I searched the room for Hope who was hunkered down in the corner barely able to catch her breath. Hating to see her that way, I crossed the room and knelt before her, "You've got to breathe," I tipped her chin upward and looked into her eyes. "Shhh," I whispered, pulling her forward into my arms so her head was tucked beneath my chin. "I've got you...You're OK. Just breathe."
We stayed like that until the medics were ready to roll Aria out. As they started to leave, Hope pushed away from me. "I'm coming," she stated firmly though I wasn't sure she could handle it. Emmett and I exchanged a glance and he nodded.
"I'll call Esme and meet you there."
